Me and some guys from school, had a band and we tried so hard. Jimmy quit, Jodie got married. We should’ve known, we’d never get far. But like you, when I look back now, those days seem to last forever. And they were the best days of my life!
I feel you man In the past month me and my buddy who are in a band together recently tried to find a vocalist and a bassist we got 3 bassists who all quit or just weren’t interested and we got 6 vocalists who all either quit or weren’t good enough, so now it’s just me and him again
Me and my mates tried putting a band together quite a few times in the past, it never worked out, it always turned into a drinking session and nothing ever got done. This went on for years. I'm now 43, one of the guys im still best friends with and recently we've put together a Nirvana tribute (tribute to the music of) We we're just sat together one night and thought right let's do this, let's do Nirvana, the band we've always loved, it makes sense. So I put an ad out for a drummer, got a reply from a guy who lives not too far away, also into Nirvana and here we are, did some jam nights in Leeds a few month back and our first gig at a bar in my local town in Dec and we've more lined up. Couldn't be happier, I finally did it, we finally did it
"Making it " these days looks like a utube channel with a metal play button, and guitar course with a few thousand+ punters paying monthly subs.....and then rocking all the dream guitars you always used to wish you could afford. It doesn't look like playing in an. Actual band, at an actual gig!
@@lueysixty-six7300 You described me perfectly except I do play in bands and play gigs. If I died tomorrow I would say without a doubt I "made it." Even if I didn't play live now I'd still feel the same since I (and many others) can make a living playing guitar. What's your idea of making it?
Yea, I know the feeling of having a struggle to put together a band. I play in a band that is now called Wallrose. At first we had a lot of struggle putting together a band. All the band members were at completely different levels of experience, and everyone had different music taste. People came into the band and left all the time. At one point there was to bassists. But eventually we managed to get a full band, with experienced musicians. We started to write our own music, and played one of our own songs at a festival. But then as last summer came our drummer had to leave the band for military service, so now we're once again left without any drummer. For a month during fall we got a new drummer, but he left because he had a lot of other stuff to do. Now we're trying the best we can to get a new drummer for Wallrose
I actually (a bass player) formed a band about 6 months ago, a little after i started high school (Im 16) with 2 guys from middle school i knew and a drummer a year older than us Its going pretty well, we´ve covered The Trooper and Seek and Destroy, and we are creating some of our own material already!
Hope you guys just remember to be friends. Talk to each other when issues arise. A band is really no different than any other relationship. Sorry to be a downer or "old" but things will happen. I'm 52 and I miss writing and playing. My bandmates and I never talked and 6 1/2 years ago one night we imploded. Still don't know what happened. It was lame. Worst part is we had 8 originals and never made it into a studio to record. See... Lame!
I love hearing band origin stories. Mine has a bit of a long one. When I was 16 I decided I really wanted to put this one band together. First run a had a group of guys that didn't seem insanely into it so I called it quits on it for a couple months thinking it was one of my crappy idea bands I came up with every couple months during that time. Fast forward a few months and I decide I really want to try it again and get two new guys I thought would be perfect. Thanks to the fact I was still in high school and two of us, including me, had full time jobs, and then eventually COVID, we didn't end up doing too much, partly because we wanted to do the whole meetup and write thing and we neglected the write by yourself and bring it to the other guys thing. Then we finally had a full lineup of two guitars, vocals, bass and drums. Second guitar player thought the music I wanted to do wasn't really the style he specialized in (we wanted to do Metalcore/Post Hardcore while he wanted to do more indie rock/pop punk stuff) and I replaced him with a guy who ended up getting a new job ended up leading him to not have the time to even hang out with his friends, let alone do a band. Drummer ended up leaving to do a new band. Bass player same story except he turned out to be a massive piece of shit (abuser) so guess I dodged a bullet. Vocalist I found out WAS a massive piece of shit (woman/child beater) so naturally he had to go. Then my whole depression kicked in of me thinking that maybe music wasn't for me and that I should try something else and what not. Then i started talking to an old friend who said he was down to help out, then eventually saw a guy that had some pretty cool vocal covers that was down to join. And a guy who really wanted to join a band so he started playing bass for us. My old friend ended up leaving to focus on his own project and we disagree on a constant direction for the band which did head us a bit down hill, but after dealing with a couple flakes, we got some songs that are almost done and we plan to have stuff out this year and hopefully plan to play out and we even discuss possibly doing a tour. Here's my advice to you reading this. 1. Before actually getting people to join your band, come up with a concept. Name, genre, your imagine, hell write full songs. No they don't have to be Bohemian Rhapsody or Master Of Puppets, but something you can show to people that would be interested in joining your band. Yes you could say "I wanna make music like Avenged Sevenfold" but that alienates people who would potentially be perfect for your band, who don't like A7X. How do you write these songs you maybe asking? Well if you play guitar, just put together some kick ass riffs you write into a song, program the drums, and maybe even attempt to sing over them. Don't know how to do any of that? LEARN! Don't wanna learn or don't have the time? Fiverr will be your best friend. Don't worry, it's not just pop artists who don't write all their songs once you start meeting people. Hell, the fiverr guy may end up joining, or at least becoming fans of you guys. 2. If you want to become the next big thing. Work towards it. Look into any big band you can think of. They all started from nothing and worked their way to the top. You don't start out as some crappy local band and magically one day get approach by some big record label guy and instantly start selling out the Wemblys and MSGs of the world. Utilize the living fuck out of social media. Especially tiktok. That's where all the young folk are at. Trust me. You want them on your side asap. As annoying as it is, spam invites on facebook and spam follow fans of bands you sound like. Yeah it's annoying but it still better than doing nothing. 3. Do thorough research on band members. Make sure they're not horrible people. And if they seem clean, make sure they don't go down the wrong rabbit holes and nothing comes out. If that ends up happening. Kick them tf out. If Vic from Pierce The Veil can throw out this own brother, you can throw out the rando who started sharing Qanon shit or came out to have slept with a teenaged girl. The last thing you want is something that will cause a PR nightmare that'll ruin your name.
I started guitar about a year ago. I tried to start a band with one of my best friends, but it didn't really pan out because we wanted to make different types of music, so now I'm trying to convince my other friend to start playing drums again. Loved the video!
To those trying to start a band. A little advise...No matter the genre get to know a few songs really well. Something simple. Keep it to the basics. And practice practice .practice.
Fantastic story. Brought back some great memories of my failed school band. In 1990, Playing "Ride" was a long way off for us, but "Creeping" was our go to song.
I’m 15 and me and my sister are forming a band. We have a guitarist but we’re struggling to find a bassist. You have inspired me so much to play guitar and make a band. Thank you
Actually, my first band was when I was in 8th grade. We sucked and it ended. Got another band with all my friends from my small town when I was in 11th grade(progressive speed metal). We continued and made a few EPs and toured Texas doing several gigs with a band that was well known named Watchtower... Billy White was my guitar teacher (Don Dokken (solo album), Watchtower...). Great memories and some wild gigs on the road. 🔥🎸🔥
This was an awesome story, Mike! I'm trying to start a band and haven't had any luck yet but after this summer I'll be in High School so I'm sure I'll find some people who like the same music and have the same passion to play music like I do
I have had one band so far. My friend played drums and so did I, but he was better than me and I had access to guitars and bass (he only had drums). Although I got up on his level as a drummer I just picked up guitar and it was us from age 14 to about 19/20. Jammed with other random people but I was in a small mountain town where there's barely any musicians, let alone metal fans. Most people were either really terrible and enthusiastic, or really good but hard to work with. Finally met this kid at a local show who was doing these crazy low death metal vocals at the shows and did a great Nathan explosion impression, and I made it a point to force him to be my friend haha. Finally he knew a dude who "played bass" and we had to fight to get him to join up with us. Wed always go to the Walmart where he worked and ask him until Finally a year or 2 later he asked about the band. Now we had a full lineup. We rehearsed our asses off for months and got pretty fuckin tight before accepting a gig, and from there we played a solid 20 or so shows of our own in our town and some of the nearby cities a few hours away. We had a short set of original songs and would rotate covers of napalm death, six feet under, fearless Iranians from hell, GG Allin, impetigo, and a few others. The bassist was reliable but not very musically inclined sadly which was definitely getting to me, we usually had to have him turned down to a dull rumble that filled the space without being decipherable (a sid vicious deal) and eventually personal drama led to me letting him go. We had an older guy sit in on our last few gigs and we sounded great Finally. but that previous drama came up again and due to intermingling between the (old) bassists girlfriend and vocalist, I found out I really had done the bassist dirty by firing him. By that time the drummer was preoccupied with lame ass college and I was basically overworking myself to hold everything together way past its expiration date, so I folded the band. That was probably 6 years ago. I'm 28 now and in a new state so hopefully I can start something new. We managed to open for the mentors, mobile deathcamp (former Gwar member), and some underground legends in our short time which I am proud of, but being a death metal band in the sticks is a tough gig lol.
I was in a band for 10 years with really good friends. It was a blast. We then got married and had kids and that was that. We still jam every great once in awhile though
🤘🏻🔥 Congrats on 778k Subscribers! Oo full documentary, that sounds awesome! Looking forward to that! That random house story always makes me laugh. So glad you guys found each other, I bet that first time you all played together felt incredible. Long live Sanctus 🤘🏻 you guys are honestly awesome! 🔥
I just started my first band! My friend plays guitar and drums, as do I, and his brother plays bass. Then our two friends sing. Sadly, our singers just left for college, so the band is on hiatus until we find another steady lineup. The Sanctus story is downright inspiring. Hope you guys keep rocking!
My Band started because of a Rock Band course at school. It was with a group of guys I was familiar with but I was only really friends with our bassist. I didn’t feel like I was a real part of the band though, being a keyboard player in a grunge/metal band, but I slowly built up more confidence, and we’re now writing an album and recording demos. One breakthrough moment for me was trying to sing “Man in the Box” by Alice in Chains when the band was jamming. I sang the verses quietly in the background, but I really went for it on the chorus and I startled the whole band. I started to think “I can kind of sing”, and I got a lot better at playing my instrument and now I feel like a true musician.
The ambition you kids had is incredible. I also can't stress this enough - you tell a good story. Some people are gifted with talking about events, you've got that. When I was 14, my older brother had been playing guitar for a couple years, and wanted to form a band with his friend, also had been playing a couple years. So they talked me into taking up drums. My dad bought me stick, a practice pad, and said he'd pay for lessons, AND, if I was still interested 6 months later, he'd buy a used kit for me. So 6 months later, the kit is in the garage, and my brother wants to play. Now, at this point he was pretty polished, he had a great instructor, and he was frustrated that I couldn't play at his level. I do remember it really got to him that I couldn't play Master of Puppets (sorry for not nailing that 15/8 six months into playing). So he and a couple of his friends, who were all more experienced, played with just 2 guitars and bass. My beginning level drumming was even a butt of their jokes, as they'd hear me struggle through practicing songs that they already knew. I was talking with my drum teacher (amazing guy) and he just kept me on the path, but I quit practicing around my brother and his friends, for my own sanity. After another year went by, and I spent a lot of time getting double bass down, suddenly I was worthy heh. The "defining moment" was when they overheard me practicing 'Welcome Home' by King Diamond. So we formed the band Nuclear Cadaver, and started playing some shows. No, we are not around, but I did play in a few other bands with my brother over the years. We're on different coasts now, but man, the nostalgia this video brought back. Seriously, I could've listened to hours of this. I find this stuff just incredibly interesting.
That made me reminisce my own band history. A lot of similarities too! I think I started my first band in '87 or '88. Our first rehearsal was just me and the drummer who later changed to bass, and we played Breaking the Law by Judas Priest. It wasn't easy finding people to play with in a small Norwegian town, but we found a drummer, and I decided to sing along with my guitar playing. We had a lot of weird names. Insulin and Asthma were two I remember 😂 Then we became Chromatic Death, and later just Chromatic. We had our debut at the local annual Park Rock event, but eventually the band petered out. I moved to a bigger city and played in many bands there over a period of 8 years. We were close to getting things going a couple of times, but it didn't pan out. Still, we had tons of fun!
3:31 😂 I was in a band when I was young, (that never even made it to playing shows), that we named Snypers Rage! I even had a cassette tape case with a jacket I made for it. 😂😂😂👍🏽
I'm 50. I've played in bands my whole life professionally and non professionally. Made a hell of a living at one point. You are so correct dude and that there's nothing more Is powerful than when everybody locks in. As a drummer I always felt Responsible for that. Kind of like a chair... Sit down get comfortable and lean back I got you!! Great stuff as always man!!! 👊👊👊
This story is so similar to mine. I'll bet lots of other band members can say that. Everybody sucks at first. But when your band solidly plays that first song ever, you'll know why we endure the pain. What an adventure! 👽🤘 Oh, and the thinking that you had about the Robert Plant guy is exactly what's wrong with a lot of pop music today. At least you guys sent him on his way instead of auto-tuning your way to success.
im a kid in a band rn, just found our singer and before we were a 3 piece and non of us knew how to sing. My brother was the bassist (he is amazing, he played for a year and knew tommy the cat), my friend tyler was the guitarist, and i am the drummer. after a couple of practices we all locked in and i got the first buzz of playing in a band with other people. I cant describe it, but its awesome. I really hope we keep the band going and have a success story like this one. Love the vid man, thanks for all the wisdom.
I started my current band at age 17. My vision was a sort of symphonic/progressive power metal band with an Eddie The Head-like werewolf mascot, costumes and all that stuff. Now we've got our own rehearsal room and equipment and we've started writing some own material. All that fancy stuff is out (for better or worse) but our influences are diverse enough for the music to turn out interesting enough.
Im 19, started playing guitar in late 2021 when i was still in high school. Immediately fell in love with guitar and tried to start a metal band. Had pretty much no luck since none of my friends like metal except for one, and the few who played instruments I just couldnt get onboard. So I just decided to get a bass guitar and a drum machine and now im currently recording songs for my "band" lmao.
Love watching your channel and hearing all of your background stories.....you guys are awesome....hope I get to meet you someday !!....keep it going mike !
Great video. I have really been enjoying your fix this band videos. It brings back great memories. I'm 55 and my band from the 90s had a reunion 10 years ago and we have been back together gigging and recording ever since. My teenage kids are now starting to play with their friends in our studio and are lucky enough to have the ultimate garage band experience. Your story is so close to my own, and many others as well. I feel sorry for the kids that don't get to experience the teenage musicians garage band journey.
I am lead guitarist and vocalist... I have one of my really good friend who's also lead guitarist... But we have that trouble all the time to find out bassist and drummer for our college band "Thrash Titans" because in India (where I am from)... People don't listen much to metal and rock music so it's really hard though.
Mike, as always, thx for sharing, I always enjoy and appreciate your stories and experiences but DAYUMMM!!! That B.C. Rich is SUPER SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😍
In my first year of high school (2011) I started to get more into drums and was eventually given a drum kit with a practice space to go with it, my younger cousin was playing guitar for maybe a year at that point and the both of us shared a passion for Metallica. Naturally the both of us would meet up at the practice space and jam out to Metallica and whatever else we could think of for 5-8 hours a day 7 days a week, me being still very new to drums our first 3-6 months playing together didn't really sound that great on my part, but I was determined to get better. Fast forward about a year later we tried out my other younger cousin for another guitarist, but he wasn't into that style on guitar so it didn't work out at first. Christmas time comes and he gets a Bass, so we invited him back to the practice space and we basically just said to him "Hey come up with a line and we'll jam along" 30 minutes later we came up with our first song that had this weird combination of Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Nirvana. We ended up writing another 4-5 songs that year. Another year later the 3 of us are sitting at our cafeteria table and I asked the guitarist "Hey didn't Kyle sing in the talent show? and was he good?" he said "Yeah he did some David Bowie" that when I told the guitarist we should get him to vocals for us for the battle of the bands. He joined us and we got to practicing one of the songs we wrote. We had to get another more experienced vocalist to write lyrics for us (she lived hours away and couldn't play for us) two weeks later we play the battle of the bands and unfortunately lose to a band doing Country covers. A few more months later I get in contact with a guy who owns a recording studio and we make plans to record our first 10 track album, but will need $1000 to do it so I unfortunately made the decision to sell my 4-wheeler which paid for the recording. we record the album and all is going well on our part until the post-production, something happened on the sound engineer part and the audio would slow down and pitch down almost a full step (we're primarily E Standard). The guy couldn't fix it on his end so he ended up just giving us a bunch of stuff worth $1000 (he had his own music store) as he already spent the money on bills or something. We were pissed so we decided to just record it ourselves as the guitarist just started his first few months of doing audio engineering, set everything up in my bedroom and spend the next 3 days or more re-recording the drum tracks and the vocal tracks (vocalist recently graduated so was only home for a few days). A couple months later we got the album done and ready to get onto Spotify, UA-cam wherever you could stream it release it and get to work on another. I suggested an EP since it would be faster to record as all the other members except the guitarist and I have gone to different parts of Canada and could only meet back up for a few days during Christmas. We wrote and recorded our EP and it's just been sitting on a hard drive since 2016. Not much else has happened since then and occasionally me and the guitarist will exchange guitar/bass parts and I'll record drums over it. Shame not much else has been done since 2016 because there is some tracks we've done that I genuinely love to listen to, but we're all adults now doing our own things in life and we all live so far apart so it was to be expected really.
im playing my first gig with a band that i joined, we play technical death metal, it slowly gets to me that its happening and now im binge watching your sanctus videos to comfort myself a little
Took my 20 years to find the right band members and then it took a year to find our drummer. I was the last to join before the drummer. I was technically the drummer during that interim (I play rhythm guitar), so when the drummer finally joined, we all lit up. We were locked in prior to that but this guy made it better. We are a tight unit with a tight rhythm section and that makes me happy.
oh yes... always dreamed of having a band... and always found some people to "jam and make noise", but it never worked out to something that one could call a "band"... of course we never had any gigs (except playing maybe one or two songs at someone's birthday party). But agree, there is nothing better in life, than making the music you love with people you feel the same "vibe" with!
I’m 14 and I’ve been playing guitar for 2 years and I found out one of my friends from church also plays guitar and listens to the same music as me so we started a band. We got pretty decent with each other before we started looking for a bassist and drummer, finding the bassist was super easy. I went to guitar center and in the back there a flyer for a bassist who likes metal so we called him and now he’s our bassist, and my friend from school played drums so he’s our drummer, I’m the rhythm guitarist and singer and me and my lead guitarist are playing live this week together
My first band was a garage band with high school friends when I was about 17 in the early 80s. It was never anything serious, just a chance to goof around and learn our instruments. A couple years later I was in the military and formed a metal band with a drummer I had just met. We posted ads all over the base seeking guitarists, had some auditions, and formed a band that in short order had multiple Marshall stacks, huge bass bins and a PA, a massive drum set and played local clubs doing Iron Maiden, Motley Crue, Accept, Dio, Ozzy, etc. We could never find a decent vocalist but musically we nailed it. There's no great secret or procedure to band-making, just know your level and the level of potential bandmates and find people you like hanging out with. I was in one band in the late 90s where I soon figured out I was a couple levels above what my bandmates could do. I had to tell them they needed to find someone more at their level as it wasn't enjoyable to me, I wanted to play, not instruct. Don't compromise on what kind of music you want to do either, that's like being in an unhappy relationship.
I play the bass and my best friend plays the guitar. I have many instruments at home, owned by my family. So we had some jamming sessions here since we have access to them, though it’s just us the bass and guitar duo. Recently I had a bday party at my home where I invited few of my friends for the first time since they live far away from me. One of them actually plays the drums. We had a fun time because we have all three members! We jokingly formed a band and invited him, he agreed! The problem is that he’s not going to be around all the time. He lives half an hour away and has school in another city which is 3 hours away. So far we had two jamming sessions together. Hope we have another one soon.
When you mentioned how your bass player and drummer were enemies, it reminded me of when we tried out a singer for a band back in the 80's. The drummer approached him about singing for us, but he was reluctant to because he and I almost got into a fight back in high school. He was trying to be funny at my expense and I challenged him by standing up to him and he got really intimidated. I guess he thought I was a loose cannon for the next couple years.
Was in bands since I was a teen, got back into it in my 40s then my 50s, now 66 and I'm in a band where all the players fit and it's magic, Sometimes it takes awhile.
Been in a band for a while but we’ve struggled to get practice but I recently bought a drum kit for demos and then it hit me; we can now practice in my garage
Still working on getting my band together. Me and my cousin decided "Screw it" and started playing together since I was starting to pick up guitar and my dad gave him and old drum kit we've had for a while. We're still going on today and we've been working on original material since 2022. Getting close to start semi-professionally record music too. We haven't found a permanent bassist, but we got this
My friend and I tried for years and finally got a great band together. We worked hard and eventually got invited to play bar venues. Everything was going great but then 3 of our members got addicted to pain pills and it was all over. That was 20 years ago and it still breaks my heart. Maybe you could do a video of how to help or get help for your band mates? Thanks Mike, this video healed a lot of my wounds. Cheers
I'm 15 and I started playing the guitar 5 years ago, because a friend of mine who played drums and we wanted to form a band; two years later he stopped and we never tried because I thought it sucked too much, I continued to playing because I fell in love with the electric guitar and was getting decent. In the last year the desire to form a band has come back to me and I have seriously tried in the last month and I met a boy from my school who formed a band and who he had already rehearsed several times with the drummer and the bassist (who I discovered also goes to my school) luckily for me the other guitarist they had met on the internet didn't show up for rehearsals last week because he found another band. guy I met well walking together after school so he asked me if I wanted to play with them and apparently I'm even better than them, despite this I have 3 days to finish learning all fear of the dark (of which I only know the solo), paranoid and last caress. However, I am very happy and scared not of the dark (ba-dum-tss).I hope it will be fun and not too embarassing 😄
Me and my brothers have a band that we've been working at for a long time, I've been playing all kinds of instruments since I was just ten years old and over these past 7 years I've been teaching my younger brothers how to play, so now we have a three Man band that's never later for practice
Sounds like you are on the right track. Much respect for you and your brothers. Ever hear of The Warning? Like you, they are a three-piece sibling band, but are sisters. They just celebrated their 10th anniversary as a band and the oldest is just 23. The Warning became famous for their cover of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” in 2014 at the ages of 9, 12 and 14. They have toured with/opened for such bands as Muse, GnR, The Foo Fighters, Halestorm, Three Days Grace, Royal Blood, The Pretty Reckless, Def Leppard, among others. They’ll play around 100 gigs this year on three continents (North America, Europe, South America), as well as some of the largest and most prestigious rock/metal festivals in the world. Keep that brotherly magic going and practice, practice, practice. Your efforts will be rewarded. And The Warning, like you, are never late for practice. Congratulations on your band and good luck going forward.
I've got a more positive story. I met some dudes last year who I formed a band with and in a short time, so much has happened and changed but our future looks really bright! we're called Pain Catalyst and already have got songs released online which still blows my mind sometimes
As a teenager I played drums on my bunk bed with a couch pillow as my rack tom, when I was in elementary school I would use my parents empty Foldgers coffee cans. At 18 yrs old in 1993 I started working and bought a CB700 kit and played for about a year in a pop punk band and then switched to bass and now I play bass, drums, and guitar along with my son.
I’ve been “trying” to start a band for roughly two years and have been playing guitar for about 4. I’m also “the kirk,” have a James, and two bass players and they’re all years long best friends of mine and it’s really amazing when we jam. Thing is, we almost exclusively play metallica and megadeth songs cause it’s just like fun and cool. We’d love to start a band but I struggle so much with trying to write anything and rarely have good time to practice with balancing everything else in my life. Additionally, finding a drummer has been hard- specifically a drummer who likes Lars. Balancing two basses is also kinda interesting but it usually seems to work out fine. Just stuck in sort of a limbo and don’t know what/how to prioritize what I want :/
Mike, you always have a great topic for your vids. I can only imagine you're putting a fire on a lot of people here. I'm 58, a little too late for me. But I am still trying to pick up your EVH tips. Thanks so much!
I’m a guitarist who also sings as well as me doing a lot of the songwriting and coordinating. I’m seriously trying to get a band together currently with people who are available and want to jam regularly. So far, I’ve tried roughly three or four times to get some like-minded individuals together and actually frequently jam with them, but so far none of it has been very successful. Apparently where I live drummers are in short supply as well because we’ve only ever found one drummer and he just wasn’t able to commit as well as him living quite far away. I’ve tried with three guitarist so far. One who was not good at all and had different taste, one who I had great chemistry with but had remotely different interests, the one that I’m working with right now is a little bit younger and him and I may actually get somewhere because he’s very skilled and we have similar interests. The bassist who I’ve got is a couple of years older and he’s awesome. Because of him being older, he works a full time job outside of town so he’s only free on the weekends and my other guitarist is only free on the weekdays. Unfortunately, it feels like we’re ergonomically fucked which sucks. Hopefully this can start working out soon. Also because I’m a lead guitarist, I’m seriously debating on finding someone else to do lead vocals but for the time being I’m cool with doing the job. In the meantime I’ll just keep trying to get better and write some more music and hopefully the time will come. Just need to keep hoping. 🙂🤘🎸
I tried, no one really had the same drive as me, which is okay, it just wasn't my scene. Which is really unfortunate because I enjoy jamming with my buddies. We at one time, did put together a 3 piece band and performed a couple terrible songs, but hey, we did it. I still pursue and make music but I don't wait up for other people, and I wouldn't be necessarily against playing in a band if I came across one that I didn't have to wait up for; and by wait up, I do not mean this as a skill issue what so ever, I simply mean the maturity to want to practice, write, and record music. So many to-be-bands get hung up on jamming and and chilling, and not really actually having the work ethic to get the tough stuff done.
I remember forming a band with my cousin when I was 13. It didn't go anywhere and then as we grew older, he lost interest in music in favor of streaming and drawing. I still own the name we used but I never used it because I dont have any members.
I have a cassette of my first band too going back to December of 1985..my goodness,..lol.. I could've easily named my band "Noise" instead.. but there wee some parts where I amazed myself especially learning the "Riff Raft" riff by AC/DC, without the aid of books or sheet music.. back then it was all by ear.. anyhow, I enjoy your videos, keep it up bud.. 😀
Me and some friends put a band together back in late 2020, it went for a year strong and managed to play at a House of Blues! Then of course it all fell apart, we all wanted different sounds to play, I was and still am digging a really loud shoegazey alt-metal sound, same with the drummer, while the other 2 were a soft indie rock sound. You can tell from footage we have that the more the shows progressed the more chaotic and split the songs became. Fun times, me and the drummer are making a new band currently so here's hoping it works out for us!
You seem to be from my generation. It is quite rare for a band to still be together for that long. I think I know of 1-2 in my local group of musicians. I got my 1st band together at age 14. We were pretty awful & went our separate ways. My 2nd band evolved into another band & we stayed together for about 10 yrs off an on. For me, starting a band always involved befriending other musicians.
That B.C. Rich is the ultimate 80s guitar. I have a 1986 custom shop B.C. Rich (mahogany body, ebony neck) that rivals any top flight instrument. Those 80s USA and NJ Rich's are pretty awesome.
This band Raoul & The Dukes has been together since 2013, when two members were still in high school and one just graduated. I was only a year out of school myself. Not my first band (that story is actually shockingly similar to Sanctus’) but the fact that we are still a band 10 years later after many sound/line-up changes, two dead bandmates and very long hiatuses between certain line-ups is nothing short of astounding to me. Still my favorite band out of the about a dozen different ones I’ve been involved with in my career. -Brandon Bailey
I've mainly been brought into existing bands (bassist here) but ive tried to form a couple bands! Ill mention the two main formative ones. First one was a high school band, it was my brother a drummer and another guitarist. We went through a lot of lovely early names (Permanent Wreckord being the main one I remember) before we settled on Electric Religion since we all liked Jimi Hendrix. At first we mainly played covers (Hendrix, Motorhead, some Metallica I believe) then we started writing originals and it got to a point where my brother and us were at odd what we wanted to do musically. He wanted to do blues and we all dove into metal. So he left and we lasted maybe 6 years or so? Started off more classic metal, then we started dabbling in thrash being really inspired by Megadeth and Annihilator mainly, but some Metallica as well. We had a weird drummer situation after awhile. Our original left and we had the most difficult time finding someone else who could do what we wanted because around this time we all got really into progressive music. Finding someone who loved real fast stuff but also wantes to get some weird on in the vein of Rush, Yes and Pink Floyd was a tall order. And the one person we found for some reason just loved to be an asshole to me. And i eventually bowed out because it wasnt fun. Theres a clip of that line up somewhere online and you can see my energy drain as the songs go on. He was erratic and just couldn't play in time. And I essentially just hid under my hair the entire time. Then I guess the guitarist/vocalist realized that while we were a three piece and all played a part him and I had this special connection. So he canned the drummer, we reunited and began our drummer hunt. We found someone who loved what we did and we only got faster and weirder as our guitarist/vocalist began getting into jazz to prep for college. So we became this weird proggy, thrashy band with weird chord progressions, time feels and polyrhythms. And i hate that we never got our late material down on any recording because it was real cool stuff. But eventually the band ended, guitarist and vocalist went off to college, kinda left metal behind in favor of jazz and funk and i just went headlong into metal. Was in and out of some death metal bands then when that all kinda fizzled my brother and I got back into wanting to be a band again. He got into some doom/stoner metal over the years, we found a drummer who lived down the street from us and we began a stoner metal band, him on guitar/vocals and me on bass and our drummer of course. We landed on the name Kings of Nothing (metallica reference ;) ). We were around for quite awhile and essentially the band was a huge form of catharsis for all three of us. A couple years before we started some tragic stuff happened around my brother and I and it was hard on us. But it was a big outlet for us. Eventually we all found a huge love of Rush and started incorporating more progressive elements into our music. So we were a proggy stoner metal band, but also loved thrash so we got some speed in there too. Our last couple years together were.. rough. To put it mildly our drummer witnessed something very tragic and horrifying and it was really hard on him, understandably so. Obviously it was the last thing on our minds cause we were friends first, but the conversation came up that if he wanted to put the band on hold for as long ad he needed we could and would. He said no lets keep going, its all our outlet for the stresses, anxieties and trauma we all carry. We did take our time getting back fully but eventually things got sour. We all werent the best at handling tough emotions, we all suppressdd stuff and our drummer especially wad that way. He started lashing out at my brother a lot, making him the target of all his intense emotions. And then we just kinda went through the motions for a year or two. We played the same songs out at shows with little to no variation, when we wrote nothing ever got solidfied. We had cool interesting ideas, real creative stuff but we were at this stand still. And because we were all stressed, annoyed and tired we all just kinda drank and went on auto pilot. Eventually we decided to call it but we had a series of really good shows lined up so we rode it out. And it was even more auto pilot then, practice while drinking to get through it, play shows and id get pretty tipsy. And we were just this ball of anger and negativity. It lead to some real tight and visceral shows but behind the scenes it was bad. So we played our last show, it was weird, uncomfortable and it just felt like a bad ending to a beautiful band. Luckily theres some remnants of the band online! We have a four song demo for free on bandcamp (called demo 2014 our profile picture is us three in reddish purple lighting if anyones interested), its one song with vocals and a three part instrumental that we all wrote about a friend who passed away. We did have a full length recorded but it never saw the light of day. We all have the recordings but havent done anything with them. Maybe we'll release them raw and mostly unmixed eventually as a time capsule, but ehh. We got them ourselves. And another more small remnant of us is my brother and I are playing music again together after years of not. After that band broke up he went full in into blues again so he wrote a bunch of material, we play some covers, he has a couple drummers in hand if ones busy ect, hes got another bassist for when i cant do shows and I just kinda back him up whenever i can but have a blast doing it. But one song he decided to bring back was one he wrote 90% of in the kings of nothing days. So its kinda funny, one moment we're doing real bluesy stuff (SRV and stuff alike), im laying back just serving each song. then the next moment we whip out a stoner rock esk song with a main riff in 9/4, a fast shuffle section, then a big slow down thats almost War Pigs like then back into a shuffle with a little unison line we all play then done. And its extra fun because every now and again we channel that stoner rock side of us again and then get weird and psychedelic at times during these blues shows. Which go over very well luckily! So its like no matter what we do or how much different we are in what we listen to and play out side of this little trio band we have those moments like we're playing stoner metal again. And we just feed off each others playing really well. We just have that unspoken connection thats hard to put into words. Oh and luckily drummer is doing much better! The time away from music did him good, he sought out help when he reached a point of not liking how he was feeling, hes married, has a kid and we've all reconnected a bit. Once in awhile he'll come to a show, listen to us play one of our old songs and its a special little moment. We've all grown, matured and handle our emotions a lot better now. There's a few other bands ive tried to start but these were the most formative ones.
I'm really looking forward to the whole documentary! I hope I can someday put together a Band but I live in the middle of nowhere an have no Idea about anyone liking the music I like (Slipknot, Meshuggah…) that also play instruments.
It's cool hearing your story and the humble beginnings. This year I want to join/ make a band since me and my brother sometimes play together, with me on guitar and him on bass, but he doesn't have much dedication to learning songs. I really don't know anyone else who plays music (and funny enough the only one I do, doesn't like me lol) so I'm a bit stuck but I'll get it done soon enough!
"And for some reason in the last couple weeks I've had a bunch of people ask me how to start a band." I COULD be wrong. But, like. The new anime, "Bocchi the Rock"-which is an entertaining and inspiring story about high schoolers starting their own band-just concluded a few weeks ago. I have a feeling the timing isn't coincidental!
This is a neat documentation of the trials and tribulations of putting together a band at a young age. It was fun to hear the clips and the progression of your musicianship. I'm also taken aback by the footage from First Avenue; didn't realize you're from 'sota. Fun to see that clip of you in a very familiar place!
Me and my band had our first show a while ago. We're 15-16. It went very well there was like 50 people (small venue so it looked big) and they were very in to the music. Overall super good experience for first show
Been trying to find bandmates for a long time now, I'm in high school (sophomore) but everywhere I look for people who play it seems deserted. One day though, I won't give up!
I started playing in the early seventies. My first guitar rig was a solid state PA amp from a school I think,, a RadioShack guitar speaker but no cabinet, just wired all sitting on a stool.
You know the "6 degrees of KevinBacon" think? I knew guys you went to school with, and you were the "high water mark" for folks who "played" the northern suberbs. "Missing Time" was my fav of yours, saw you at Mirage, Al was super nice, it was a good time, you guys werent that bad at all. 😊
This is exactly how my band is going. I joined this band as rhythm guitar player and we never had a practice with the original lineup because the original bass player was complaining about me being in this band. So we took a step back and I had a growing friendship with the lead guitar player. We would send ideas on messenger and we would start writing songs together. By this time I started having interest in writing lyrics so I became the singer. Fast forward now, 1 year later we have our lineup and we went through 3 bass players, 2 rhythm guitar player(including me) and 1 drummer. It was so long for us to get this band together because of school and also the fact that we didn’t live in the same neighbourhood. One would live in the country side and we other was in the other side of town. Now I have my drivers licence but I had to take the bus before all of this. EDIT: The guitar player I started the band with quit because of depression and out drummer at the time took his place. The new drummer was really good and we became really good friends. After our first gig, we split and me and the drummer started a new band. We are working on our first EP!
Great story. I've got 400k views on a single video from our band, but not because we are great. LOL. Just the right title or something. Anyway, fun story, it was an enjoyable romp. My cousin and I were similar. He now plays with Cousin ITT in VT and I play with Fitch & Company in VA, but we stay in touch and compare notes now and again.
my band story is complicated to say the least, we got a group together, singer and bassist hated each other for no reason. they fought so many times where me and the drummer just wanted it to end. we play a school talent show and decide to break up that same day. moving forward there’s another band with the bassist, we need a singer so we bring in the one from the previous band. they say everything is fine and then proceed to revert and fight again, we learned that the bassist was digging at the singer, and generally being rude to him. he leaves and tries to have a power move when he was leaving and attempts to take everything with him. now he is trying to rebound and restart the first band without the singer. and this all happened in the span of a year.
I’m attempting a band. I’m the guitarist and I wanna convince them to be lead singer as well, I have a bass player, and a drummer, like every drummer he needs to slow down, and we never really have meets. I’m still trying to keep the band together. Because I love them all.
I'm working on forming a nirvana inspired band, when I tried about a year and a half ago, (we broke up about a year ago, and our 3 month apart practices, and nobody wanted to play the same songs, we had all the equipment except mics & monitors, so the keyboard player didn't know what to play, and the drummer only knew the first and last queues, the groove, and the timing, and I didn't know how to play the song, I just used powerchords, and tried to sing.) Back then our (my) influence was Green Day. Again, we broke up about a year ago, and about to go into high school, even with percussion in band, I still can't get a drummer to respond, and I know nobody else who plays guitar or bass, and like a few people who know piano. Hopefully I have better luck next year starting Jazz Band (I can't take grunge, metal, or punk rock band, unfortunately.) I will have a bit of luck.
for the past year I've been playing in a band i was invited to and we've played 3 shows but we've recently broken up do to our rhythm guitar/vocalist and our bass player going to university but me and our drummer (who's now switching to bass) are trying to put together a new band
I started a free referral service. First dibs on musicians from 4 counties! Hehehe. I brought free bulletin boards to the music stores that didn't already have them, posted cards, and musicians would call me up, I'd take their information down on a little questionnaire and file it. Bands would call and I'd go through the files hooking people up and making lots of connections. I probably had 200 musicians on file after 16 months. I thought it was a pretty good idea.
Me and some guys from school, had a band and we tried so hard. Jimmy quit, Jodie got married. We should’ve known, we’d never get far. But like you, when I look back now, those days seem to last forever. And they were the best days of my life!
did this happen during the summer of 69
@@maxballdepth6055 💯
I feel you man
In the past month me and my buddy who are in a band together recently tried to find a vocalist and a bassist we got 3 bassists who all quit or just weren’t interested and we got 6 vocalists who all either quit or weren’t good enough, so now it’s just me and him again
Sounds like an Offspring song
Hahahahahahahahahaha
Couldn't be happier, I finally did it, we finally did it
You guys should upload videos of your gigs/ covers!
Yea
I actually (a bass player) formed a band about 6 months ago, a little after i started high school (Im 16) with 2 guys from middle school i knew and a drummer a year older than us
Its going pretty well, we´ve covered The Trooper and Seek and Destroy, and we are creating some of our own material already!
hows it going
That's really cool
Hope you guys just remember to be friends. Talk to each other when issues arise. A band is really no different than any other relationship. Sorry to be a downer or "old" but things will happen.
I'm 52 and I miss writing and playing. My bandmates and I never talked and 6 1/2 years ago one night we imploded. Still don't know what happened. It was lame.
Worst part is we had 8 originals and never made it into a studio to record.
See... Lame!
damn.. that is lame, i guess you could still play your originals if you have them written down or remembered?@@DVSNTHERE
Wow
Thanks for the advice fr bruh and I'm sorry for what happened:[ hope your band goes on top one day!
i am NOT readin allat 😭😭☠️
@@bellackat333 Honestly, I'd recommend it. Iss pretty interesting
I started guitar about a year ago. I tried to start a band with one of my best friends, but it didn't really pan out because we wanted to make different types of music, so now I'm trying to convince my other friend to start playing drums again. Loved the video!
Fellow guitar player here about a year for me as well. I’m playing with a drummer this Friday and I’m nervous asf. Good luck to you on your journey 🎸
@@wrldsky2311 same to you
Bro I feel your pain, I'm a metalhead but I play in jazz and funk bands because that's the scene where I am and it's what my friends play
To those trying to start a band. A little advise...No matter the genre get to know a few songs really well. Something simple. Keep it to the basics. And practice practice .practice.
so how did it go? did he start playing again?
Fantastic story. Brought back some great memories of my failed school band. In 1990, Playing "Ride" was a long way off for us, but "Creeping" was our go to song.
I’m 15 and me and my sister are forming a band. We have a guitarist but we’re struggling to find a bassist. You have inspired me so much to play guitar and make a band. Thank you
I formed a band about six months ago, I was 12 then and I’m 13 now
How’s it going bro

I was in a band when I was young, (that never even made it to playing shows), that we named Snypers Rage!

This story is so similar to mine. I'll bet lots of other band members can say that. Everybody sucks at first. But when your band solidly plays that first song ever, you'll know why we endure the pain.
What an adventure! 👽🤘
Oh, and the thinking that you had about the Robert Plant guy is exactly what's wrong with a lot of pop music today.
Amazing story. This has brought back a lot of memories and feelings for me as I'm sure it will for everyone. Thanks man!
Great story, can't wait for the sanctus documentary you were talking about, ill definitely be watching!!
3:36🤣🤣lmao even more funny when you showed the picture
Great video. I have really been enjoying your fix this band videos. It brings back great memories. I'm 55 and my band from the 90s had a reunion 10 years ago and we have been back together gigging and recording ever since. My teenage kids are now starting to play with their friends in our studio and are lucky enough to have the ultimate garage band experience. Your story is so close to my own, and many others as well. I feel sorry for the kids that don't get to experience the teenage musicians garage band journey.
I love that you have recordings of all the “firsts!” 🤘
I am lead guitarist and vocalist... I have one of my really good friend who's also lead guitarist... But we have that trouble all the time to find out bassist and drummer for our college band "Thrash Titans" because in India (where I am from)... People don't listen much to metal and rock music so it's really hard though.
Ah, the boundless energy of youth! Each step is a bit of success. You actually 'made' it happen, be proud!!
Shame not much else has been done since 2016 because there is some tracks we've done that I genuinely love to listen to, but we're all adults now doing our own things in life and we all live so far apart so it was to be expected really.
im playing my first gig with a band that i joined, we play technical death metal, it slowly gets to me that its happening and now im binge watching your sanctus videos to comfort myself a little
You’ll be fine! Just keep going. :)
@@TheArtofGuitar thanks mike!
That was one of my FAVORITE videos ive watched on YT in a long time.. SO INSPIRATIONAL... 💯💯💯🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
We haven't found a permanent bassist, but we got this
This is so cool... I only knew the very end of the story when Chris and Cory joined.
Would love to join a band some day. Also super excited for the documentary!
the early drum, set was awesome, and so was/is grand mom
Haha your story reminds me abit of bocchi the rock! Also best of luck with the band! How are things going?
Man, I absolutely love these kinds of videos. Looking forward to more of em!
Mike, you always have a great topic for your vids. I can only imagine you're putting a fire on a lot of people here. I'm 58, a little too late for me. But I am still trying to pick up your EVH tips. Thanks so much!
I love these types of videos and the singer really has an awesome metal voice once you guys matured.
I play bass/vocals and can play guitar and I started a band with my brothers.
Your story of transformation from aspiring drummer to guitarist is very similar to EVH's. That's very interesting.
I'm hyped for the documentary
"And for some reason in the last couple weeks I've had a bunch of people ask me how to start a band."
I COULD be wrong. But, like. The new anime, "Bocchi the Rock"-which is an entertaining and inspiring story about high schoolers starting their own band-just concluded a few weeks ago. I have a feeling the timing isn't coincidental!
I was going to comment the same thing
Ah, absolute loved that anime. Motivated me enough to play my guitar again and learn the songs from the anime
definitely it lol bocchi went big
LMAO i am one of those people inspired by the show!
Great video ! Love it, the moment you lock in for the 1st time! BOOM! vsm
This is a neat documentation of the trials and tribulations of putting together a band at a young age. It was fun to hear the clips and the progression of your musicianship. I'm also taken aback by the footage from First Avenue; didn't realize you're from 'sota. Fun to see that clip of you in a very familiar place!
Great story, thanks for sharing ! I'm really looking forward to the full documentary now !
Me and my band had our first show a while ago. We're 15-16. It went very well there was like 50 people (small venue so it looked big) and they were very in to the music. Overall super good experience for first show
Looking forward to the documentary.
Still eagerly awaiting Sanctus merch. I want a shirt dammit!
Keep on rocking buddy! 🤘🔥🤘
Been trying to find bandmates for a long time now, I'm in high school (sophomore) but everywhere I look for people who play it seems deserted. One day though, I won't give up!
looking forward to the Doc.
I started playing in the early seventies. My first guitar rig was a solid state PA amp from a school I think,, a RadioShack guitar speaker but no cabinet, just wired all sitting on a stool.
Can't wait for the documentary 😎
Nice video. I also like that feeling when you are playing with similar minded people in a band. Fun times.
Of course, great story, the bass player and drummer most fought before joining the band and then playing well
You are a great story teller.. Your videos are so Inspiring.
I put together Indecent Exposure. My highschool band..and we got to open for Sanctus🤘Awesome memories.
I've asked this before. Could you please make a video showcasing your guitar collection?
Too good amigo. Great story!
This was awesome.
Hopefully I have better luck next year starting Jazz Band (I can't take grunge, metal, or punk rock band, unfortunately.) I will have a bit of luck.
for the past year I've been playing in a band i was invited to and we've played 3 shows but we've recently broken up do to our rhythm guitar/vocalist and our bass player going to university
but me and our drummer (who's now switching to bass) are trying to put together a new band
When ever my phone pops up a notification late at night like 3 4 5 6 in the morning of a UA-cam video i know its most likey you lol
I thought it was a pretty good idea.
im actually 13 right now and i have a band for 1 year now. i hope it will last also as long as yours.
After 30 years off and on, I've finally started recording with guys that are ready. It's about damn time.
Thanks for the video. I miss my teen age and my band. Maybe I can try again in my 39?😮
Thank you so much for this video.
