Will you be putting a video together that list all your favorite settings for when you are diving? Thanks!
It is unbelievable that you capture this with the TG-6! :D
Guys, your videos are very well made! Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
thank you for sharing this with us! great production!
You are welcome, and thanks for watching!
Awesome, thx for the Review.
Just adjusting the shutter speed is cool. This is the most needed thing in underwater photography.
Having come from a DSLR stills background I decided to opt for a smaller setup particularly for macro video. Decided on the Tg6 & so far just amazed with this little compact & the results i'm achieving. A great combination with the Backscatter 4300 lights & snoot system.
We are super happy to hear that!
Another very informative and professionally done video.
Time for me sell my beloved TG-4 and upgrade to TG-6.
Many Thanks Robin and Backscatter crew.
p.s. Use to stop by your shop in Monterey but we retired and moved to Port Townsend, Washington, do miss coming by the shop.
That's great to hear, and glad you found it helpful! Hope to see you in the shop again one day!
Robin and Backscatter, a million thanks, I'll be getting mine ASAP
I just discovered pro capture
A lot of these improvements could surely come as a software update for TG5 owners!!
Great review! Very very detailed specifically for the underwater photo community.
I'm not the outdoorsy type but I'm thinking of getting this just because it looks so cool and makes me look active. 😁
How does the GPS work? when turning it on and off does it keep track or do you need to wait forever before it figures out where you are? The TG-5 would require you to wait forever to get the GPS to lock, especially when turning the camera on and off again. Primary reason I went with the Nikon W300. Thanks!
Seriously, olympus should promote this as an official video for the camera. I could not get any of those info not only from olympus videos nor any other reviewers!!!
I have been looking for having more depth in my macro setting and this video tells it all.
Must watch if you own tg6!!!
Thanks!
Epic! Nicely made video!
This is a serious upgrade for the controls, but the way they added them (minimum shutter speed,... really?) makes it way more complicated then necessary. Even with only one control dial, they could easily have added a full manual mode. I guess they'll sell that with the TG-7... Still, it makes the camera a lot more attractive, so it's definitely a good thing.
Thanks. Im going on vacation in November and wanting something that i can use while snorkeling. I was initially just going to buy a cheap akaso action camera but i think i may just rent one of these instead.
speed, light, and ISO in the underwater photography system And where in general have the same ratio?
I love the TG series for the great image quality and the simplicity it brings to underwater shooting. Fantastic macro, waterproof without a case which will save you when your housing leaks, inexpensive, tough, and great for travel. What consumers need to realize (but no one ever mentions or are unaware of) is that the 3rd aperture setting is simulated. The TG series has 2 physical apertures at any given zoom, full open and 1-stop closed. The third aperture setting is simulated via a 3 stop ND filter. At the wide end of the lens, this gives you a physical f/2 and f/2.8 with the f/8 simulated by engaging the 3-stop ND filter on top of f/2.8. You will not get any benefit to corner sharpness by shooting at f/8 as opposed to f/2.8 with a wide angle conversion lens. All you're doing is limiting the light hitting the sensor, horrible for natural light shots in many circumstances. This also applies to depth of field shooting macro. You will not get any additional depth of field shooting at the 3rd aperture setting as opposed to the second at any given zoom range. Regardless, the TG-6 is still a fantastic camera.
Our testing has revealed noticeable improvements in both wide angle at higher apertures and increased depth of field in macro. In fact, if you look closely at the lens of the camera when selecting apertures you will notice a visible difference in aperture diameter. In any case, the higher f/stop does yield a darker background and more depth of field than the wider setting, so regardless of how the camera achieves it, it is the ideal setting for what we are trying to achieve.
what limit time TG6 in housing can use under water sea/clear water 30minor 1hour++
Is it possible to rake still macro photos by this camera?
Nice, really needed better control on shutter speed. It's getting closer and closer to a full manual mode, so why not offering it??
In the TG-5, the stabilization for 1080p video would cause the angle of view to crop in significantly.
Looking at the specs of the TG-6 in the Olympus website, it says with stabilization for video the “angle of view becomes slightly smaller.”
Not sure what they mean by “slightly”. Does the new TG-6 crop in video as much as the TG-5, or is it able to achieve a wider field of view?
We have not noticed any significant change in the field of view between the TG-6 and TG-5.
Thanks for the review.
What about underwater video quality with Photo-Video Light?
Do you think Olympus TG-6 UW video is comparable with Panasonic LX10 or Sony RX100?
What do you mean by Photo-Video light? The camera is excellent in both photo and video when using a strobe or video light. Be sure to check out both our Best Settings series for the TG-6, as well as our guide to the Best Compact Cameras on Backscatter.com: www.backscatter.com/reviews/post/Backscatter-Best-Underwater-Compact-Cameras
Has anybody used a seafrog housing for this camera? Can anybody tell me your experience using it?
Many thanks for the great review! If I were without a camera, I would buy a new TG-6. There were questions behind the scenes: The whole TG line suffers from slow, poor holding focus and poor video stabilization. It would be interesting to find out if these problems remain with the new TG-6!
We've found the autofocus to be reliable even in challenging super macro, and by using the different focus modes (such as Focus Lock) it is easy to avoid focus hunts. The stabilization is helpful, but does not fully replace the necessity of holding the camera stable as well. So far our video tests have made us happy. Stay tuned for a lot more video content from this camera to see these in action.
@Backscatter Underwater Video & Photo, is there a downside to using focus lock?
Hi! After using the camera for 1+ years in Monterey have you found a solid manual white balance setting that works best in ‘blue-green’ water?? Thanks!
We just like to take a white balance off of the sandy bottom. Works well for us 99% of the time.
hi with aoi umg01 can we have diopter possibility like +2.5 +3 ?? as i have presbyopia problem...
The UMG-01 does allow for the focus to be adjusted a fair amount, but it's not directly relatable to diopter strength ratings. It works great for folks that have trouble seeing detail up close.
what is the battery life per charge
I am looking for a wide angle wet lens. However I am wondering may be better to buy a 67mm thread lens and an step up ring 52mm to 67 mm rather than a 52mm lens. Just in case I change my camera/housing in the future. Are there any drawback?
While that isn't a bad strategy, it really boils down to what lens you are looking at. Specific models carry certain tradeoffs or pros and cons. Reach out to us via email or phone and we will be happy to go over all options with you!
The Caribbean is too vague. Where are you traveling?
How is the noise when zooming in and out when shooting a video? I’ve seen some reviews of the TG-5 which makes an audible noise when zooming in and out.
There is audible noise from the zoom motor. Most underwater footage is edited to remove the audio track anyway, so this isn't something that take particular note of.
Having issues setting lowest S/S. It still exceeds the lowest setting when the iso limit is reached essentially making this function useless. For example when lowest S/S is set to 1/125 and max ISO is set to 400, once the camera hits ISO 400 it still drops the shutter speed well below 1/125. Called Olympus and they are researching. does this happen to you as well? ISO stays locked but SS does not.
It's probably related to your Flash setting. Please give us a call or send us an email and we will be happy to assist you.
Os it water proof without the ring?
would be this camera useful for surfing?
I just got a TG6 - I'm wondering - is the waterproof case essential for using this camera while wearing diving gloves - seems like the large buttons would be useable with gloves - clearly using gloves would be extremely difficult with just the camera as is.
The housing is definitely much easier to operate than just the camera body alone when wearing gloves.
best SD card for tg6 ?
Hello. I just purchased a TG6 and wonder how to set the white balance when using a red filter. Should I be in the underwater WB mode or regular WB?
Use regular white balance if using a filter. The underwater WB mode adds color compensation on it's own (the same effect as adding the filter) so you wouldn't want both at the same time.
Gahh! Finally, shutter speed control. I'm ready to upgrade ;) Will the FCON-T01 lens still work with this?
It will work with the camera, but not the housing.
@@backscatteruw Tx for the info! I saw in another review that the only unfortunate thing is the sound that is recorded when shooting video and zooming in. But, my use will primarily be photos anyways. :)
Hi guys, is it the same problem with AF in video mode as I have in my TG-5? IMHO to lock and unlock focus manually is not an option for 'competitor' of action cameras.
What is the problem you are having?
The problem is that AF is too slow, some times it takes seconds to adjust proper sharpness. It was impossible to film a group of divers or make at least 2 min clip inside the wreck or cave - focus was permanently hunting. Old compact Canon and Nikon of the same class always made sharp video. If i understand correct - it's only 1 option with TG- to lock focus and make movie from constant distance - correct? Sorry for my English : )
Thanks!
Thanks for the great review
Do I need the house for 3 meters depth?
We strongly recommend it. The housing prevents any wear-and-tear damage and allows underwater accessories like a wide angle lens to be used.
Guys is it okay to shoot in 4k with the 30fps vs 1080 with the 60 underwater? I love being able to screenshot 4k video for pictures
Yeah of course! It's not a 'hard' rule, just a general recommendation.
Do you have a link for that magnifying attachment? Could not find it on Amazon...i leave for the keys next tuesday...appreciate a response...many thanks

@@backscatteruw Thank you...I fly out next wednesday..how long will this take to be in my hands? Im in Southern California..need it to dive on Monday the 28, in Key Largo...should i have it sent to my family home in Miami or will it get here before the 23rd?Need to know ASAP..please!
a must have camera
Two questions. Will you guarantee that the TG-6 will work with the old Olympus housing? Also does the battery for the TG-5 work for the TG-6? Are they the exact same? Not the same but compatible? Thanks! Looking forward to upgrading to this.
Our testing has not yet revealed any incompatibility issues. Both TG-5 and TG-6 do use the same LI-92B battery.
Can you make a video comparing olympus gt6 vs sony rx100 vi.
We don't have any plans to make a video specifically comparing these two cameras, but you can find our comparison article that covers the pros/cons of each camera here: www.backscatter.com/reviews/post/Backscatter-Best-Underwater-Compact-Cameras
Can you select all apertures this time? Not just f2.8 and f8
Nope, it's still a 3-stop limited aperture range in A Mode.
wie ist es den mit dem ton auf dem land ? ich habe mir eine andere
kamera gekauft doch der ton ist sehr leise und ein sehr komisches
rauschen ist zu hören
Unfortunately the context of this question is somewhat lost in translation. Please reach out to us directly for assistance. Thank you!
why do you recommend f18 for macro? I would assume shallower depth of field would give better results for macro shooting
Too shallow is not better.
Having more depth of field makes it easier to get critical details in focus. Advanced shooters can certainly play around with shallower depth of field for more dramatic results.
What is maximum lenght of video in 4K with full battery?
30 minutes
Can you use the led illuminator while recording video?
It's really not bright enough to be a practical solution. An external video light is WAY brighter and makes much more sense.
gonna get one .
am i imagining or what, because i see the Dpreview specs page and it says "fully articulated" (screen).
The screen is not articulated at all. It is completely fixed to the camera body.
how much money do you spend for everything you have shown in this video? for lights, torches, case...
With the tg-6, would we need to use a red filter below 20 metres?
In order to get the best ambient light color results, yes.
how much?
Can you use the silicone jacket in the housing?
No, the jacket would interfere with the spacing and controls.
Everything seems to me to be a little unfair to the owners of the TG-5 because all new functions, but the larger resolution of the screen and the new lens coating, could be implemented in TG-5 with the FW upgrade!
Can you update the autofocus during video? This can't be done with the TG5… you have to rely on the camera only, and it often makes mistakes, it's annoying.
Yes, check out the details in our Advanced Settings video: ua-cam.com/video/x6sDWBxXM4k/v-deo.html
Doesn't the TG 6 shoot raw? How do you change from jpeg to raw?
Yes, it does shoot RAW photos. This can be set from the quick menu by hitting the OK button from the main shooting screen and scrolling to the appropriate setting.
which is better for underwater photos, this or go pro hero 8?
The TG-6 is a much more capable camera for shooting still photos. A GoPro cannot sync with a strobe and only has 2 buttons, so it can be fairly limiting and challenging as a stills-only camera. GoPro really shines when you need a small, simple, 4K 60p video rig.
Definitely sounds like Olympus could've just made a software upgrade available online other than releasing a 'whole new' product line. But why make that upgrade for free when you can charge people the price of the TG5 for it...
Either you make a firmware update or leave it
I have a TG-5 an I lost the zoom button. I have been told they have to sens it oversea? That would mean more cash to spend?
Please any advise?
Please reach out to us at info@backscatter.com and we can connect you with our Service & Repair department. Should be an easy fix!
I have one important question: how is the display? I gave a second TG 5 and this one has the same problem there is condensvorming in the display. If toy search on the internet than there are more users with the same problem. Olympus didn't solve it!
That means that you have moisture inside the camera. Give us a call or send us an email and we can help you out with that.
Can I remote control the camera from my phone via WiFi?
WiFi connections will only work topside, not underwater
@@backscatteruw I know, but above water then?
Is the TG6 RAW accepted by Apple iPhoto?
It does not work as of IOS 12.xxx. I have not tried in IOS 13 yet. It will work in Lightroom for iPad. It will not work in Affinity Photo for IPad.
No - use Adobe DNG CONVERTER app to convert ORF to DNG. You can pull them straight off the card and convert them to a folder for import into Photos.
Why no manual mode, or shutter priority, even?!
Gotta be a limit somewhere ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm torn between this and the Sony rx100va.
sony + a housing
Wow very nice beautiful 👍🌼🌼
That minimum shutter speed should come has a firmware update on the tg5. This is laughing at the face of the customers..
I'm still trying to get Olympus to add auto exposure compensation to the TG5. I like to shoot HDR, but want to use RAW files and combine them in Lightroom (rather than the JPEG that the camera does) to get the highest quality
G7x mark 2 or tg6 ?
Depends on what you want to do and what pros/cons matter to you. Reach out to us directly on the phone or at sales@backscatter.com and we can help you decide.
If only they added more zoom
I bought a tg5 one year ago and I love it, but I hate Olympus raw .ORF files because they are not essy to import, view and edit with a tablet. Very anoying.
Olympus should change their raw codec files to make ot easier for the users 😤
Barrio Sesamo I import and edit raw files from my Olympus Pen F all the time on my IPad Pro. Works like a charm. I usually edit in Adobe Lightroom.
If you give me an e-mail i will send you a screen capture of what I get when i want to import files to lightroom on mu iphone
@@terrywbreedlove I use iphone 7 with IOS 12 and I can't see the preview thumbnails of .ORF files when I want to import them from Lightroom CC. Can I send you a screen capture of my iphone so you can see what I mean?
Barrio Sesamo I important off my camera with the Olympus app with no trouble.
I can also import olympus raw files to my iphone and edit them. But the problem is that Lightroom doesnt show the thumbnails before editing them.
With IOS 11 it worked perfectly but with IOS 12 no.
So the problem is lightroom and IOS dont like each other
Dude !? Do you play ace combat ( 7 )
Please do I may have to $ more than I want 😕
fuck I want to go with them to the caribbean do a bit of diving photog
Well let's go! www.backscatter.com/reviews/category/Trips-and-Classes
I've just bought this camera (for some river rafting) and I am little disapointed by image quality, it's really bad, it's like some 10 years old compact camera, at least it has F2. It tends to overexpose scenese so it uses nonsensly long times always and if there is some light in scene, it looks like nuclear explosion. I hope it's at least really waterproof because image quality is really bad. I have panasonic G80 for normal photographing, I thought it's not something special, but now I see how superior it is to all 1/2.3" cameras or phones. I think this TG-6 should cost maybe 1/2 of it's price, don't tell me that put some rubber there and make it waterproof cost extra 200 eur. Even firmware looks 10 years old, it's almost same like on very old digital cameras, it's not anything like in modern cameras.
It sounds like perhaps your settings are not quite dialed-in for the situation. Feel free to give us a call if you want to chat about finding the best settings to get the results that you desire.
@@backscatteruw I am afraid it's not because of settings, it's because of image sensor is poor and lens is tiny and waterproof, it just can't have image quality like standard cameras, but there should be at least more possibilities to change something, for example how to measure exposition etc...there are only two options and with other settings it's similar, even phones have more options to change. I tried even raws to check dynamic range, but it's 1/2.3" sensor, there is no dynamic range at all. :-D
@@Pidalin Certainly it is a small sensor and cannot match the image quality or dynamic range of a larger sensor camera. It also doesn't offer manual mode but the for diving purposes it still works great as long as the settings, accessories, and technique are dialed-in. Let us know if you ever need help with your next camera so we can make sure you get something you are totally satisfied with!
I have the TG-5 and the difference between them is not even worth giving it a new name. An improved screen? Some tweaks to the software which should just be a firmware upgrade? Honestly, I'm insulted and this new camera will effect my future camera purchases. Olympus, you might have lost a fan. Sounds like something Canon would do. #RIPCanon #RIPOlympus
Black backgrounds in macro - UGH!!!
Only thing...THE APP SUCKS!!! No where near Canon's app. Olympus app keeps disconnecting! And transferring videos, you can forget about it! 😤
why only talking about video of micro things?? u better explain about how it works about auto fokus while filming normal video underwater... i mean not microthings. just normal video mode in underwater.. b4 i use tg5 and i filming fish underwater ..autofokus is absolutely fucked up.
better upload how it works underwatervideo without micro things. just any footage is fine ... like fish or sharks video... try ..
Because macro is what this camera is made to do best. Check out the rest of the videos on our page about this camera - they cover the wide angle performance, video performance, and everything else one could ever want to know about using this underwater.
Nobody who has a tg5 will want a tg-6, does not bring anything new in terms of quality or significant improvements.
Not true...they did make image quality improvements. Open www.imaging-resource.com/IMCOMP/COMPS01.HTM and compare the TG-5 to the TG-6. The TG-6 has noticeably better sharpness, white balance, reduced chromatic aberration and less blocky noise.
The LCD has much improved sharpness.
Minimum shutter speed is an absolutely critical new feature that will cause me to buy the TG-6. AFAIK that setting is not present on the TG-5.
30 fps in 4K :( really? it is 2019
We also wish that more cameras offered 4K 60p recording options, but that is still a pretty pro-level feature on most cameras.
I had a Nikon AW-130 that filled with water during a SUP ride, without having fallen or impacted anything, no reason at all. Nikon was zero helpfull and wanted to charge me for a new camera more than it cost on any local shop. I was very upset with them and decided to get the TG-6. I have it for a year now and all i can say is that I am tremendously dissapointed with the camera. The average quality of the picture is really poor, not crisp and shining like the Nikon was and also not as user friendly. The edges are allways like smudged and if you use the zoom then it is a disaster, the picture looks like one of those early 640x480 digital cameras.
Very dissapointing. :-(
That isn't the experience that we've had with the camera. If you ever need help with getting the settings dialed-in for the best results feel free to give us a call. Hopefully we can make some recommendations that produce better results for you.
Thank You!!
NOT worth it the differences are marginal
