No Everybody Wants To Rule The World?
I dunno man, any 80's list feels incomplete without that song imo
EXACTLY. how are you going to make an 80s list without it, really
Yeah.
Overrated as hell
Head Over Heels better tho
@@noruegazero very reasonable opinion, I just think that if they put Tears for Fears they would put their most iconic that is also amazing, even tho it may not be objectively their best
TIALTNGO is absolutely era defining. Jangle Pop was a massive genre of the 80s and that song is arguably the quintessential jangle pop song
There Is A Light was incredibly era defining. You wouldn’t understand this in the American music nerd world.
Way better than that overrated Kate Bush song. Melon still salty that Morrissey has his own opinions
american music nerds obsess over this song wdym lol
I mean more at the time The Smiths were around@@happycrimson
@@belachaney Morrissey's opinions are racist, it does not matter if they are 'his own' or not. Its not having different opinions, its being stupid.
@@penguinwolf3330 his opinions aren't racist and even if they were it doesn't make his music less amazing. Stop being a sissy
Oh come on the Smiths song is definitely Era defining
Take on me, just like heaven, everybody wants to rule the world. I’d chuck them in my top 10 for sure
the vibe on just like heaven remains unmatched
I would pick a Duran Duran song, but I wouldn't pick that one... something like Planet Earth or Rio are more statement making songs
no Joy Division, New Order or The Cure in the Top 10?
Kiss wasn't even Prince's best 80s song. Let's Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, and 1999 all belong above Kiss.
I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man and Uptown are two quintessential 80s sounds and songs.
Don’t forget the beautiful ones
Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
Why choose Kiss instead of Purple Rain which is far more iconic? Also missing The Cure, Talking Heads and Metallica
Wow, no Cure?
I wasn't alive during the 80s but I listen to a lot of music. King of Pain by The Police is my favorite 80s song, one of my favorite songs period, incredible track.
Favorite police song too. It's incredible
Same here... I LOVE that song!
Agreed, amazing song from an amazing band. On that note, I feel like The Police’s music shits on just about everything Sting has done as a solo artist.
@@TheAndrewj96 Eh, Sting proved he was still a very good songwriter for a long time after police split. But having Stewart Copeland behind him did literally hit different.
How is "time after time" not on here?
Where the fuck is Master of Puppets? I'm sorry but the biggest and most popular metal album in the history has to be represented in some way on a list like that
I’m honestly surprised there was nothing from Queen or GNR, though if we’re still taking about iconic rock songs then I’d definitely include Master of Puppets, Back In Black, Crazy Train, Jump, Peace Sells, Once In A Lifetime, Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)/Comfortably Numb, Personal Jesus, Where the Streets Have No Name, Raining Blood or even Land of Confusion
The Wall was 79
@@RichardRichardman I'm aware of that, they just released Brick 2 and Comfortably Numb as singles in 1980 and plus the entire Wall tour spanned from 1980-81 so it's still considered part of '80s music
Sigh, I mean if you're strictly going for iconic then ok its a fine list but Jesus this list puts me to sleep, these are the most bland boring panera bread songs from these respective bands
No Cure 😢
no talking heads is crazy
On Prince yes BUT Kiss come on. I guess because it was a big single but like 20 songs by him that I would put over that for sure.
Blue Monday should have been there somewhere
Overrated New Order song. They have so many better songs
@@doglog3934my favourite song of all time so cant agree. Id say objectively too the track in question needs to have made a big impact and have iconic status to make it on to lists like these. I guess you could do Age of Consent
@@radical6905 yeah Age of Consent is so much better. So are songs like Ceremony, temptations, Bizarre love triangle, Your silent face
There is a Light is literally the greatest song ever made it has no flaws and I can hear it a million times and never get sick of it so zip it lock it put it in your pocket
Great song but I know it's over is the better track off the album
There Is A Light That Never Goes Out would certainly be a favorite song of the 1980s.
I know it's over is the better song off that album
@@doglog3934 I love that one too, but I like There Is A Light better. The whole album is good.
Suprised once in a lifetime didn't make the top 10.
The great curve is better
@doglog3934 Anything from remain in light works, but I just assumed Rolling Stone would select the most popular one.
Ofc it’s Rolling Stone so I shouldn’t expect much, but really? No Sonic Youth? No Pixies? No Talking Heads?
Wait, the list is about song decade defining or best songs? If its best songs, then it should be
10. Every breath you take - The Police
9. How soon is now - The Smiths
8. Once in a lifetime - Talking Heads
7. Fight the Power - Public Enemy
6. There is a Light - The Smiths
5. Blue Monday - New Order
4. When Doves Cry - Prince
3. The Message - Grandmaster Flash
2. Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
1. Billie Jean - Michael Jackson
My list would contain 10 Smiths songs, but yours is okay
Money for nothing imo should be there
Billie Jean should be n°1 because not only you have a song that define the entire pop decade but also a song that broke barriers on MTV just by being amazing.
Overrated ahh song
@@doglog3934sure dude...
no einstürzende neubauten??? this list must be rigged
Where is my mind??
Oh wow an actually good list from RS good for them
Godflesh - LIKE RATS
Of all the Prince hits, I would not choose Kiss but it’s still valid
When I Think of You & Miss You Much by Janet Jackson also redefines the 80s Pop Music...
Fantano as always underrating The Smiths
Morrissey hurt his feelings
YO WHY IS THERE ROBERT SMITH IN THUMBNAIL BUT NO CURE IN LIST????????
Duran Duran are great
Not a bad list really, not all my taste, but they can be deemed worthy.
Am I crazy or should « just can’t get enough » be on there instead of The Smiths or Duran Duran?
Not better than the Smiths song
#1 should be Ebony & Ivory
Houds of love could be #1
L take. Give Duran Duran their flowers! like do you realize how big and influential they were?!
They are still less influential than Depeche Mode. They are considered one.of, if not the greatest British electronic group of all time. They completely changed the way electronic and alternative music sound and were a huge influence on a ton of artists from Shakira to Rammstein to Linkin Park.
They’re one of the more well remembered bands from the era, I’m pretty sure.
who said anything about depeche mode?@@azalago
@@happyMOO5 Someone didn't watch the video.
@@azalago Duran Duran and Depeche mode are both great bands!
Did anyone actually like Like a Prayer, I just remember MTV couldn't get enough of the slut-in-church video. Never met anyone who likes that song. Wouldn't Material Girl be more 80s? Or just use Cyndi Lauper instead. Running Up That Hill got more popular from Stranger Things than it was in the 80s. I hate Rolling Stone don't know why I'm replying.
Nah Like A Prayer is a phenomenal song you're misguided
@@NathanHautain It's a good song but doesn't exactly scream 1980s like Material Girl.
No Take On Me or any song by Queen? 🤔
Neither deserve to be on there
Where the Streets Have No Name?, Every Breathe You Take, Under Pressure, or Men at Work, maybe.....sorry Rolling Stone.
Best 80s song is Temporary Secretary by Paul McCartney
i don’t understand why that song and simply having a wonderful christmas time get so much hate. maybe they’re not beatles great but they’re not bad songs
Prince is good to put at #1, but Kiss is really not good and not the best of Prince
No Master of puppets?
The 1980's were 80 years ago... Hannah Montana is turning 55... Feel old yet?
Cheers Geoff
2023 to 1981 is the same difference as 1981 to 1939
I'm happy there is Duran Duran and Kate bush in de top 10 But overall is this a crappy list. it's a very very big shame there's no Depeche Mode, The Cure, Slayer, Joy Division, New Order, Judas Priest and the Human League!
2023 to 1981 is the same difference as 1981 to 1939
i won’t get out till 1987. i’ll be 84 years old.
well, i’ll only be 82!
@@michaeledwards6683 Sir, are you a 120 years old? 👀
@@Arawn2020 no but pete is
Wheres Deslizes by Fagner the best song of all time
It's a list of the best songs of the 80s, not one of the most "era defining", whatever that means, and if you think any of these songs is better than There Is A Light, fuck you + How Soon Is Now should be top 5 at least.
Might be a generic take but MJ and Prince are hands down the 2 greatest Artist of the 80s
one is a predator
@@him-xz9phit’s never been proven
So, no Bruce Springsteen, no GNR, like No Glam Metal at all. Prince over MJ? Delusional. Anything from Purple Rain should be here, but over MJ? No. Nothing from American Alt Rock Underground which is big part of college radio back then. Rolling Stone suck.
Also, how DD and The Smiths are not defining?
1. Judas Priest - The Sentinel
2. Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
3. Megadeth - Wake Up Dead
4. Metallica - Blackened
5. AC/DC - Hells Bells
6. Queensryche - Eyes of a Stranger
7. Van Halen - Panama
8. Dio - The Last in Line
9. Motörhead - The Chase is Better Than the Catch
10. Death - Pull the Plug
Okay but can't allllllll be metal.
Respectfully, no MJ or Prince in anything "top 10 greatest 80s" is wild, your opinion i guess
Honestly, I dig it. Only change I would go with is Peace Sells over Wake Up Dead, personally
@@joe.osullivan my last words would be my pick
Definitely some of the best hard rock/metal songs to come from the 80s, that decade was a fucking goldmine for that genre
I get that it’s influential but 80s rap is so unbelievably lame and outdated, even public enemy. I can’t believe we’re still talking about it in 2023. Everything about it has aged badly. I don’t think public enemy or the furious five deserve to be in a top 10 list of 80s songs. If I heard someone listening to public enemy in 2023 I’d probably laugh in their face. It’s grandpa music
Born In The USA not being in the Top 10 is absolutely insulting.
Not a top 10
Top 10 as far as DEFINING an era goes.
And it needs Flashdance, What a Feeling
"Hungry Like The Wolf" is a good song. But some of their other music 😬 is truly awful
