  • Duran Duran were undeniable pin-up idols. Teenage girls plastered their walls with pictures of each member of the band for sure, but, the music of Duran Duran was NOT Tiger Beat/ bubble gum fare. Duran Duran actually wrote amazing songs, with heady lyrics that gave their music substance, and artistic credibility.. In each Duran Duran creation, there is some clever turn of phrase, or engrossing subtext that set them apart from other bands in the 80s and 90s, but not just from other bands of those decades, they could write catchy hooks and melodies with the best in the history of the Rock
Era. We celebrate their genius here.

    #DuranDuran #NewWave #80s
#5- "Save A Prayer" (the album version from Rio). This ballad written by Simon LeBon about an intense one-night stand really resonates with the early Duran Duran adopters. It was a #2 single in the UK, and Top 10 in many parts of Europe, but was unreleased in its first run in the U.S.. Even though it wasn't a radio single in America, the video became very popular on MTV, and that put more fuel on the fire for Duran Duran's breakout in the U.S. in 1982. Riding the band's popularity, EMI/Capitol Records released "Save A Prayer" in the U.S. in 1985, and the song went to #16 on the Billboard Hot 100. I could hardly contain my reaction.
#4- "Rio". Didn't get much attention outside of airplay in Australia, but after Duran Duran had their breakout hit in the U.S., radio programmers discovered some older Duran Duran material and there was renewed interest in "Rio". The reissue of the single in 1983 propelled it to #14 on the Billboard Hot 100.
"Rio" is another sexy composition from Duran Duran telling us about a girl named "Rio" that is a "bird of paradise" with a "cherry ice cream smile, and dances "just like a river twisting through a dusty land". The songwriting brilliantly creates vivid imagery in the theater of your mind. "Rio" is simply a very alluring visceral experience set to hook centric music.
#3- "Hungry Like the Wolf"- The primal New Wave classic inspired by the 'Little Red Riding Hood' fairy tale, was the breakout radio smash for Duran Duran, and the video for the song ranks as one of the most played ever on MTV. The video also won the first Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video in 1984, and was a certified Gold single rising to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100, #1 in Canada, #5 in the U.K., and #1 on the U.S. Rock chart.
"Hungry Like the Wolf" is full of cool, thought-provoking lyrics, but my favorites are:
"I smell like a sound" / "Mouth is alive with juices like wine"/ "Straddle the line in discord and rhyme"
"Smell like a sound?" Really? Don't think about that brain twister too long, or your head may explode..
#2- From the album Seven and the Ragged Tiger- "The Reflex". A massive success that topped the pop charts in the U.S., the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Belgium. In its original form, the band thought "The Reflex" would only an album cut, but famed producer Nile Rodgers turned it into infectious jam- with heavy percussion effects, and big dance groove.
More superb songwriting from Duran Duran, especially the chorus line:
"The reflex is a lonely child, who's waiting by the park"
"The reflex is in charge of finding treasure in the dark"
"And watching over lucky clover, isn't that bizarre?"
Yes, wonderfully bizarre.. Every 80s kids knew the lyrics to this and sang it to the top of our lungs. In fact that bad Chris Kattan movie Corky Romano movie captured that part perfectly:
#1- "Ordinary World"- The music industry referred to "Ordinary World" as a "comeback" for Duran Duran, because several of their single releases in '89 and '90 did not hit the Top 40, and many critics wrote Duran Duran off as a trendy New Wave band, whose popularity had faded away with the decade, but boy were they wrong. Duran Duran returned to glory with a vengeance, releasing their apex composition."Ordinary World" featuring one of the finest pop arrangements I've ever heard. A range of emotions hit you during the 5:39 album version of this masterpiece from their self-titled album in 1993- again sometimes referred to as 'The Wedding Album. There is a part of the song that makes you want to cry, another that makes you become very introspective, and the end of the song that gives you triumphant joy.

It’s tragic that most people and pop culture as a whole mostly remember Duran Duran as one of the early ‘pretty boy bands’ when in fact, as stated, they were anything but that. Wrote their own music, played their own instruments.. really, really well.. they’ll always be one of my favorite bands for the simple fact they are real musicians in a real band. The amazing music they created goes without selling.

It's hard for me to overstate the impact this band had on me. I started dating my first girlfriend at 15 in 1984, and she introduced me to them, often playing Seven and the Ragged Tiger while we went through the timeless rituals of first love. She actually looked like the girl on the cover of Rio, in terms of her facial structure and piercing eyes, although blonde, not brunette. All these years later, I still have pretty much all their albums and even many 12" vinyl remixes, which I have introduced to my wife, who also strangely enough, is quite a bit younger than I (she was born after Duran Duran's heyday in the 1980s), and looks even more beautiful than my first love. I also remember going to a Duran Duran concert in 2003 in Toronto in a night club. It was the original line up, and despite having a free 2nd ticket, I couldn't find any one of my friends to go with me, so I gave it to an absolutely gob-smacked woman just outside who didn't have a ticket. I'll never forget how awesome it was to stand at the bar of the club (The Government), order a gin and tonic, and then, as I squeezed the lime into my drink, turned to see not 30 ft from me, Simon, John, Andy, Roger and Nick, playing and sounding as incredible as ever. Life can be profoundly wonderful and strange at the same time. Affection to all those who still know how good Duran Duran are.

Duran Duran, their music so catchy. Especially "Hungry Like the Wolf." It's a shot to the psyche that starts 100 mph. But they were disposable pop right? Okay, "Save it for the Morning After" was different. And yeah "View To A Kill" was a grown up song. But nothing prepares you for "Ordinary World." It's godamned profound. It's dark, it's bleak but it's not a drag to listen to. Why? I think it's because by all accounts Simon Le Bon and the guys lived that which they spoke. The worldwide audience knew it, knows it and gets its theme: Won't give up no matter what.

Careless Memories stands out for me as a fan of their entire library and a teen in the 80’s who later drew musical inspiration from them. Actually I find myself drawn more and more to their self titled album as their most pure new wave music, with each successive album drawing increased inspiration from American R&B, pop, and funk. JT’s bass work was always influence by the syncopated styles of disco and R&B, but his application of syncopated bass lines in these early albums was masterful and served as the foundation of their sound and somehow came across as anything but disco/R&B in these songs. Later on as we get into the Notorious years, they are nearly full on funk/R&B and Thats when I began losing interest in the band because I felt there were far better funk bands to listen to at the time.

Notorious was a great album. The single choices of Skin Trade and Meet El Presidente were interesting. I think there were other songs which would have been far more commercial had they been released as singles, and more likely to have built on the success of the Notorious single.

Are you crazy? Loved the Power Station as well as Arcadia. I also loved that all this happened during Live Aid bc we got 3 Duran performances that day! I got all of them on tape including the wrong note heard round the world! I felt so bad for Simon when that happened.

Thank you for this. I was a teenage girl in the '80s, who stared at their pictures/videos, loved their looks and overall style, but I always thought they were immense talents as well. I grew up on '60s, '70s, '80s rock, hard rock, but loved their "new wave" music just as much. They will forever hold a major place in my heart. Their music stands the test of time. They are great people too.

I was a late comer when it came to Duran Duran. It was a new moon on Monday and seven and the ragged Tiger that hooked me. One of my best friends at the time gave me the first three albums to listen to in full! from that point on I have been a Duranie ever sense! I was 14 at the time. I just turned 50. They are my go to band every day. I could not imagine not hearing John’s baseline in hungry like the wolf, or careless memories or ordinary world. They are such an amazing band and so underrated by the critics. If they would’ve just sat down and listen to all their Music they would’ve understood what we already did, That they were simply amazing. I would have to say my top five Duran Duran songs would be number one new Moon on Monday, 2, hungry like the wolf, three, new religion, 4, careless memories, and 5, Union of the snake. However all their albums during the 80s and early 90s were phenomenal. The liberty album is so good and yet people don’t even recognize it. It’s such a shame. And one of the all-time best albums was the wedding album! Bar none, every song on that album is phenomenal. Every song on that album is so good. Duran Duran is simply by far one of the best bands ever. Thank you John thank you Simon thank you Nick thank you Roger thank you Andy!!!

Tears For Fears and Duran Duran were the bands that got me into my current music taste! Without them, I never would have decided to listen to other new wave/synthpop songs and fall in love with the genre. DD (along with Peter Gabriel, of course) also made me appreciate music videos more. It’s impressive that they still sound so amazing today, even working on another new album. My personal favorite of theirs is “Leave a Light On,” which might be from 2011, but is still so beautiful and is reminiscent of the 80’s with a modern feel.

I have 2 older sisters. My oldest sister's favorite was Andy, the other's favorite was Roger, & mine was John. We all fought over Simon! Lol! I remember Mtv aired a concert in about '84-'85 (I was about 8-9) & my mom actually let me stay up pretty late to see it. I think it might have been live & I was up until probably about 2am! I ended up seeing them in concert in '93 with the Cranberries opening for them! Linger had just hit, but I had no idea who the Cranberries were. My middle sister got me the tickets so I could see Duran Duran live. So awesome! I can't remember who went with me but I remember that they just went for the Cranberries. I ran into my first love there w/ his then g/f. I think he only liked Duran Duran because I once told him he looked like Simon! Lol! Such great memories.

    Thanks for this brilliant video.
Duran Duran are a prime example of band members mastering their craft and creating masterpieces.
Each member brings something amazing to the table which results in tracks that sounds unlike any other band regardless of the decade.
They’ve always stood apart from their peers - for good reason. They’re unique.
Simon’s poetic award winning lyrics, John’s amazing bass guitar sound, Nick’s new wave keyboard sound and not afraid to try different techniques, Andy the rocker brings the edge to band (when he’s WITH the band 😂) and finally the backbone of group, Roger who may be quiet...but his drums certainly are not.
Put Roger and John together mixed with Andy’s guitar and you’ve got an melting pot of talent on the boil.
Pour in Nick’s keyboards and top it off with Simon’s brilliant lyrics and you’ve got yourself a hit from heaven.
We’re the lucky ones, who decade after decade, are lucky enough to sit back and enjoy the fruits of their labour.
I’ve come to appreciate their music more as I’ve gotten older - also appreciated the fact that they share so much of themselves with the media.
The constant interviews, tours, documentary specials etc...we’ve essentially watched them grow up since they were 20.
Unfortunately I’ve never had the opportunity to see them in a concert yet, hopefully before they stop touring I’ll get the chance. Simon’s voice has gotten better as he has aged. Some vocalists aren’t so fortunate. He’s definitely been blessed.
    My top five...
    5. The Chauffeur
    4. Come Undone
    3. Notorious
    2. The Reflex
    1. Ordinary World
Five isn’t enough, it needs to be twenty. But that will do. 😉

DD is one of my favorite bands. I recently found all five Funko POP!s at Walmart and snatched them up. While everyone says that "Rio" is their best album, I think it was "Seven & the Ragged Tiger". "Crime & Passion", "The Seventh Stranger", and "Shadows on Your Side" could have been Top Ten singles.

In 6th grade I wanted to be John Taylor because all women liked him. I got my bass not knowing about the need for talent. I figured nobody's life could be more perfect. Only today I know the real truth. Two years ago I(now age 49) met the legendary talent John Taylor. Becoming acquaintances, speaking to one another sometimes 2, 3, even 4 times per week. He's more down to earth than anybody I've met in entertainment. He sets the standard for being down to earth.
