Viewfinder Review

- Viewfinder reviewed by Tristan Ogilvie on PC. Also available on PlayStation 5.
"What Viewfinder lacks in story substance and compelling characters it more than makes up for via the pure, mind-boggling exhilaration of its perspective-warping puzzle solving. Its superb, photo-based environmental deformation doesn’t just break ground - it bends and stretches it into entirely new shapes and forms in the wake of each puzzle completed, while also introducing regular game-changing parameters that forced me to continually think outside the frame of my shots. The ability to transport yourself into paintings and screenshots makes for a journey that consistently captivates in between each carefully considered camera capture, and the rapid rewind function emboldens you to get creative with puzzle solutions without fear of retribution. Spellbindingly surreal and stimulating to the end, Viewfinder is the freakiest form of photo mode in which every snap is a happy one."
This is mindbending and brilliant, wow! Support these developers because we need more of this.
For me games like this is what gaming and game development is all about, pushing the creative limits of what's possible, something that's been lost in AAA gaming for a long time... thank the gaming gods for smaller studios still willing to push that creative envelope
Um no. This game never takes its puzzles further, it introduces a concept but they never change.
Whoever came up with this brilliant and fresh concept, hats off to you.
This needs a VR mode
It works because there’s one camera, if there were two like your eyes in VR, there would be a weird transition of what you’re seeing as soon as you place a picture, because the switch from flat to having depth is immediately noticeable in VR, whereas in flat, it doesn’t register until after moving. It might still work, but it won’t be as seamless
The picture could instantly (and seamlessly) transition from 2D to 3D the moment your head moves.
@@Cragadom it’s a little more complicated than that… because you always see depth in VR and it’s not linked to a perspective shift caused by moving, the picture ‘jumps’ from being flat & held up in front of your face to being a 3D part of the level, whether you move your viewpoint or not… this isn’t a problem in the flat version because you can’t see depth without movement, so whether the picture is flat or 3D, it looks the same since there’s only one camera viewing it.
@@Dogtorbox Yeah that same thought ran through my mind as your response popped up.
Even if it ‘didn’t work’, as in, it literally turned to 3D the moment you placed the photograph, it would STILL be amazing in VR.
Bending reality+VR?! Sign me up!
🙌🏼
😝
@@Dogtorboxit could still work like how the 3D slider worked on the Nintendo 3DS, going from flat to increasing the 3D effect.
This looks like the coolest puzzle game mechanic since Portal.
Try superliminal.
Hope this game does really well. It's not everyday that you get blown away by a game's simplistic yet innovative quality.
Been dabbling with this this evening and it’s real fun. Almost finished the 2nd Level so far and not anything mind crushingly challenging yet but I’ve certainly grinned a few times when the answer finally clicked and the levels are introducing more features. Very reminiscent of Maquette insofar as both were PS5 games that looked kinda similar and played with size, perspective and some smartly designed puzzles.
im at world 4 and im sadly speedrunning the levels at this point
Great game but aside from a couple of puzzles it’s far too repetitive and easy. Need an update with harder puzzles and new mechanics imo
The game doesn't get hard ever
IT get's way harder later on
Photographer games always appreciated!
It's rare the a review completely sells me on a game I've never heard of before like this
This game looks great, reminds me of Superliminal, another mind bending perspective game
4:26 someone give a raise to the scriptwriter immediately!!
Scriptwriter of the game or of this review ?
@@9714 The review! That Ah-Ha joke was amazing
Thumbnail gave me PTSD from the watermelon level in Mario Sunshine
This game looks incredible. It’s been sitting on my wishlist for a very long time. I’m glad it’s finally out!
This is Valves F-Stop, originally made for Portal 2, but scrapped it.
It’s cool to see an original idea in a game for once.
Not giving this game a 9 or higher is an absolute injustice.
It would be a 9 if there was no unnecessary voice acting.
@@_Cetarial and if it was longer
@@aether388And if it was actually difficult, like portal or talos principle. Truly lost potential
If it had puzzles
omg, you saw 4 too 😂
Grabbing this for the Steam Deck
This game is incredible! Ingenious mechanic, a new twist on Portal. Really gets you thinking and twisting reality! Support the developers. I'd love to see this as a VR game too!
This game is brilliant in every way. Really looking forward to playing it.
This review, though, is pretty bad. It is more a description of the game, the mechanics and what happens in the game than a review itself. Most of the fun in this game is the discovery and this review spoils most of it.
30 seconds in. Im sold, and leaving to literally experience for myself. Thank you.
It feels like there are too many spoilers in this review otherwise it would be a great video
Unreal! So cool and creative. That’s got to be one of most unique game ideas I’ve ever seen. Definitely picking this is up if only to support the developers making this. Congrats on making something so fresh in such a saturated market.
Fantastic review! Thank you!
This was something like the idea value was working on as a replacement of portal 2. It was titled f-stop or aprecture camera.
Reminds me of 2D indie game Snapshot...
Anyhow this looks and sounds awesome, definitely got to play this one.
Crazy creative and great execution! 🤯
Can't believe no one's mentioned Superliminal
got one minute into this review and instantly wishlisted it. love fresh ideas
Highly recommend playing this alongside Superliminal, another fantastic logic-bending perspective-based puzzle game
This has been the best year of gaming in a a decade seriously
Writing of this review is 10/10
glad this game at least got an 8 loved the demo. Can't wait to play the full release!
Portal, Superliminal and this are my favorite puzzle walking game
This looks great, but O want a VR version!
this game on shrooms would give me a heart attack
6 hours is a very optimistic way to say it.
It took me around 2 1/2 hours from start to finish with all optional levels and some collectibles.
Damn thats kinda upsetting
This is an incredible game design to make the game render frames areas elsewhere
reminds me of a sweet mix between portal and superlininal
Does anyone remember Crush? The perspective changes are very reminiscent.
Tristan, ur writing in this review was something to behold!
Wow! This is great! Definitely want to get this!
Was sure it was gonna be a 9. The story isn't that important in this kind of game and everything else was positive.
There are not really any challenging puzzles
@@kavanclearyI might as well try to speedrun the game
Superliminal is also a pretty fun forced perspective game too. Pretty trippy.
Going to get a mountain of hate for this if it's ever seen, but the main character reminds me of the main character from forspoken with the way she talks. Except everyone seems to be positive about her.
So cool! I've never seen anything like this.
What kind of black magic programming is this. Very cool.
This is genius. How did they even create this? Mind boggling
From a game developer's perspective, I'm afraid to figure out how this is technically achieved
Don't remember if they stated it at the beginning, but this review is a spoiler for a rather short 4 hour game.
The verdit is 8.
If you like the concept, don't spoil the story/challenges by watching this video - just play it.
The mechanics are basically what you saw in the trailer + a bit more.
This feels like a spoiler heavy review… still gonna play it tho. Looks great!
It was only about 8 minutes of a 6 hour game
Had the same feeling
mindblowing 😮 if it didn't win best creative award in goty 23 imma RIOT
This game is actual FPS innovation.
my head hurts from waching this BUT ain't no way I'm skipping this. I'm definitely getting it
Expecting GMTK to make a video about this end of the year as the most innovative game of the year
We need this mechanic in a future Zelda. The Legend of Zelda: Viewfinder
This essentially is the F-Stop but not made by Valve and a lot more creative since you aren't restricted to the objects in a room.
Even watching it in a video is mind boggling
It got an 8 !
THIS LOOKS AMAZING!!!
Looks like the F-Stop mechanic Valve was toying with years ago.
This looks amazing
This game is honestly so beautiful.
Word to the wise, TURN OFF THE SPEECH-VOLUME.
The protag is so insufferably-smug, its like Velma
Should be 9.5 / 10. Idea is amazing.
Subliminal was an amazing experience. This looks like more of that and I'm all in
Wow, this game looks very interesting! It's got everything: cats, puzzles, global issues... even watermelons!
"a-ha moments" lmao outstanding review
Great to see new game mechanic at last. The next gen console are still waiting for the next gen game (if you just don’t look at the technical aspect). Play with our brain please !!!
Would love this the switch 😮
This gonna be wild to play it when you’re high
Hollyyyy this is so cool!! Damn 😮
so where do you go?
Finally some true innovation in gaming :)
A game as significant as UsTwo's Monument Valley
Looks like Superliminal, but brighter and less unsettling lol
As a game programmer myself im like how the hell do u code that I'm still trying to figure that out
I'm not a programmer but it seems crazy, if the game really works as described. With open world design people are always like "this allows so much player freedom, there was a grape pickup on the top of that mountain, exploration is rewarded." But being able to superimpose any piece of terrain upon any other without constantly running into game breaking situations is freedom to a different power. The designers would have to consider so many contingencies that most players would never see.
This would be an amazing VR Game
The a-ha joke was immense! Currently changing my underwear...
They should make this in VR
Well it won a games BAFTA . Didn’t even know about the game. Looks like a cross between portal and the witness . At least from a game mechanics and visual style. Going to check it out.
This is incredible, my jaw literally dropped
The world's only video game writer who is also an entertaining writer. Also the game looks great.
Not knowing if it's "THE solution" or "A solution" sounds a lot like Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom's mechanics.
this deserves a 9 easily in my opinion
this is mindblowing
Its like portal and the witness had a baby 😄
how do people code this stuff man
Just love this game❤
isnt this just like superliminal?
This game is something else
Cool! 👍🏻
Who's the main character? Does she have a name?
"The plot in this puzzle game was hard to reach and also optional, that's why it's bad." Brilliant IGN logic as usual
Anybody know how much this will cost? I’ve searched everywhere and can’t see a price listed.
Just replying here it’s $25 btw at least on PS5. Total steal I’m buying it for sure, looks amazing
this game is a masterpiece if you play it muted
GoW 3 Hera’s garden extended DLC 😋
mind blowing 💣🤯
Why keep comparing it to other puzzle games? Just judge it by what it is... an original game.
Most original game since portal
