    Hey Smitty! Game dev here, what you experienced is a prime example of use of Shaders, that is the effect that is put on top of the assets in order to bring them into the same style, shaders are generally where coding and art are mixed the most when it comes to developing. I'm for sure playing this when it comes out it's such a wonderful love letter to what make game art so impressive !

      I think whats on the picture is not just a simple texture but they are projecting the premade asset on it from a camera which is always looking at the asset. Then they are cutting out all the geometry in the shape of the picture and spawning the asset. Because of the simplistic artstyle, everything is rather lowpoly thus easier to calculate the cutting part. They are basically doing a boolean operation.
      Now I want to play around in Unreal to mimic this effect. Great stuff!

    Game dev in “training” here, and i gotta say this game is beyond revolutionary for its mechanics. The fact that things like this are now possible leads to so many new ideas
    Also i’d like to think that how the photos are done is when you press the align button, the game calls upon an object that is the “room” that appears when you use the photo, and then checks where to spawn it, what direction the camera is facing, and if any level geometry conflicts with the object, and if so then the object spawns into the geometry and cuts it to make a perfect fit.

      The effect of swapping 2D to 3D would be VERY jarring in VR, where as on the flat screen it's indistinguishable from moment to moment. It might also look janky. You'd see right through the illusion the second you swapped in the 3D geometry. On the flat screen, you can't tell the difference until you move.

    When I first heard about this game and the whole concept/idea of it, I was quite impressed. But actually seeing it all play out as you go? Holy shit, it’s a lot more than I thought, and I absolutely love it. It’s mind-bending, but this has to be one of the best puzzle-style games I have seen.

    as someone who's done game dev, it is impressive beyond "my little tiny brain" as you said - applying shaders (as most of that is shaders) to individual portions of the world without having them overlap is pretty impressive, especially assuming frame rates dont completely die

      How would they even do this? You could probably create a line spawning from the camera and the corners of the photo and delete the area between the lines. Then you could instantiate each world in the deleted space. How anyone would come up with that is insane to me.

    • @mcdonaldsnapkin6823
      @mcdonaldsnapkin6823 Рік тому +4

      @@reversed5552 I could be wrong but I think this is achieved by a complex boolean operation. Essentially the game seems to compile a 3d world or an assortment of polygons into each photo. When you "deploy" the photo the polygons spawn in the colored 3d world and boolean with anything is collides with. Now I'm sure a ton of modifications have been made to the boolean operation because while raw 3d modelling, getting a clean boolean can be quite difficult at times depending on how you have your polygons. This game seems to apply a clean cut no matter how you place the object so I'd say its quite robust.
      Note: If you don't know what boolean is it's essentially a term in computing where you take 2 values (in this case b&w world and colored world) and set them to interact with one another in different ways. Essentially what is PROBABLY happening in this case, is when you apply the b&w pic to the world a subtractive or difference boolean is applied with the polygon data in the photo. This means that any polygons in the b&w photo interact with it deletes. Then another boolean operation probably takes place directly after that applies the b&w photo an generates polygons in the exact spot where the subtractive operation took place. The subtractive boolean operation is probably heavily modified to automatically close off any open poly faces along with some other advanced parameters to ensure the subtractive boolean operation is clean every time so you don't get any weird looking polygons on screen. If you want to know more you can google or youtube "Maya 3d boolean"
      I know some basic theory of 3d modelling and game development and by no means a practiced user or expert by any means so I could be completely wrong about all this. If anyone with more knowledge thinks I'm wrong please tell me because I too am curious on how this works.
      Edit: Made this comment before finishing the full vid and didn't realize you start interacting with the other types of photos. In every reference of my comment where I say b&w photo I'm just referring to any photo you pick up in the game world and can generate new paths. All the same boolean concepts still apply no matter that nature of the photo.

    • @reversed5552
      @reversed5552 Рік тому

      @McDonaldsnapkin I completely forgot about boolean operations. Had to mess around with it while working in blender and unity.
      My only experience with game design is in unity, but I remember downloading a package that allowed for boolean operations on meshes. Of course this was only in the editor, but I can imagine that you could apply this the same way during run time.
      The only thing that I can't figure out is how they apply faces to the meshes that have been subtracted. Like when you apply a photo through a wall and the inside has faces applied to it instead of it being "see through." I can't even imagine how you would go about fixing that.

    Imagine a murder mystery game or something like bioshock infinite, and like the major climax is we find a photo with someone in it, and in placing it we release them. There is so much that can be done with this kind of mechanic.
