I do wish there was the old option of a Legate and a Legate marshal, because having your only source of army-wide LD10 also be the only one you can spec out to be a melee threat _and_ be a 0-1 choice is no fun. Marines get Centurions to do frontline roles but SA get nothing and if he gets sniped out it's a devastating blow.
The strategy around the melee legate marshal is to not make the legate marshal your warlord. You hide a captain (warlord) off board in an arvus till t4 if you want to be super secure or in a transport if you want up to 60 companions rather than 30 companions on the field.

But not every army should have multiple melee powerhouse heroes; the Solar Auxilia is primarily a ranged army.
