Speed Racer, also known as Mach GoGoGo (Japanese: マッハGoGoGo, Hepburn: Mahha GōGōGō), is a Japanese media franchise about automobile racing. Mach GoGoGo was originally serialized in print in Shueisha's 1966 Shōnen Book. It was released in tankōbon book form by Sun Wide Comics and later re-released in Japan by Fusosha. Adapted into anime by Tatsunoko Productions, its 52 episodes aired on Fuji TV from April 1967 to March 1968. The anime was later re-broadcast on Tokyo MX from July 1 to September 25, 2008.
Selected chapters of the manga were released by NOW Comics in the 1990s under the title Speed Racer Classics. These were later released by Wildstorm Productions, a division of DC Comics, as Speed Racer: The Original Manga. In 2008, under its Americanized title, Speed Racer, Mach GoGoGo was republished in its entirety in the United States by Digital Manga Publishing and was released as a box set to commemorate the franchise's 40th anniversary, as well as serving as a tie-in with the 2008 film. The television series itself is an early example of an anime becoming a successful franchise in the United States, spawning multiple spinoffs in both print and broadcast media.
The protagonist of both the anime and the manga is Speed Racer, originally Gō Mifune.[14] He is known for his love of racing and valuing his family. He drives the Mach 5 (as well as other cars, such as the Mach 6 in the movie) and always manages to wind up in extreme danger with either his younger brother or his girlfriend Trixie. Speed is shown to miss his older brother, Rex (secretly disguised as Racer X), in both versions. He is portrayed by Emile Hirsch in the 2008 film while his younger self is portrayed by Nicholas Elia.
Off the track, he wears a blue shirt with an orange "G" (standing for his Japanese first name, Gō) with a white collar, a red racing bandanna around his neck, white pants, red socks, brown loafers and yellow gloves. He is 18 years old, has a brown, almost black, pompadour, and his eyes are brown (in the anime version they are blue). In racing, he sports a white open-face helmet with an M (representing Mifune Motors) on top. In the anime, on special occasions, Speed wears a red blazer with a yellow "G" embroidered on it. In the live action film, he wears a white leather racing jacket unzipped over his classic outfit. He wears his classic outfit (without the embroidered "G") in the first half of the Casa Cristo 5000. To strengthen character back-story continuity between Speed and his older brother Rex, Speed's red socks were considered "lucky socks."
The Mach 5, Speed Racer's car ("Mahha Gō," or "Mahha," in the Japanese version), is a technological marvel, containing useful pieces of equipment. Gō Mifune/Speed Racer easily deployed these gadgets by pressing buttons marked "A" through "G" on the steering wheel hub (although there are buttons on the steering wheel in the manga, the letter designations are exclusive to the anime and the 2008 live action film). This uniquely designed car, built with a sleek Coke bottle bodystyle, has a white exterior with a large "M" on its hood, the logo for the family business, Mifune Motors (changed to Pops Motors in the anime and Racer Motors in the live action film). The two-seat car had a mostly red-colored interior. The number 5 is emblazoned on both side doors of the car. In the manga and anime this is the car's racing number; in the film, it is because it is the fifth car built in Pops' "Mach" series of racing vehicles. Although technically inferior to other racing vehicles such as the Mammoth Car and the GRX, the Mach 5 manages to win most races because of Speed's superior driving skills.

WOW! Really well done. The proportions on this model of the Mach 5 are spot on and you really did it justice with your build. Thanks for sharing and thanks for the tips. I have had this model for years but never put it together. Now might be the time.

Hey Chris, FYI the 4 "mystery" pieces underneath are for jumper legs controlled from the steering wheel. The car could jump over things with it. There were also saw blades that came out so he could drive through the woods.

Question is, does the snap model or the glue model have the ability to use ALL the accessories from both sets to make 1 "good" one? And can the bubble canopy come on and off?

Nuts, I was gonna say that. Mine's an older glue-required kit. Not sure about the markings. Hard to tell as I haven't opened the plastic baggie there in. Might be stickers.

Jump Jacks....Those 4 square pads on the bottom of the chassis....they're called jump jacks, my friend. They propel the car into the air and/or can be used to lift the car off the ground for maintenance. One of the signatures of the Mach 5.

Big fan of the original cartoon show. Not lousy later animated series nor gawd awful movie version. Another guy on UA-cam did build of this same kit. He didn't like the seam along front nose so he cut off front part of chassis where it snapped on to upper nose, and meld them together to eliminate seam. I prefer seamless look myself but overall your build is a lot better IMO. Your paint job and detailing on wheels are great. Gave them that smoke metal effect popular on many cars today. I'm 57 and haven't done kit model since 1970s but watching this makes me want to give it a try again. Thanks for posting. Great video!!

Thanks for posting this! I got mine when it first came out around 2000. Maybe this will finally inspire me to dig it out of my stash, and finally get it built!
Too bad it didn't come out back when I was in Grade School - these would have sold like hotcakes! My friends and I thought it was odd that you could get a model of Penelope Pitstop's Compact Pussycat (and other "Wacky Races" cars) back in 1970, But there was NO plastic model available of the Mach V until some 30 years later! And now I understand that the "Wacky Races" models are also being reissued . . . .
Nice job on your Mach V! Again, thanks for posting this!

I've got screwsin my kit but mine is an original Polar lights kit that has the homing pigeon the saw blades the jack stands that pop out of the bottom of the car they make the model stand above the road almost 4" Your kit has the four Jackstand feet those horseshoe shaped "things" are just the feet retracted ! I'm opening the trunk on mine and going to try to make spridel and chim chim out of polymer clays from Michaels and have them peering out of the trunk like they were always doing on the show !!! Good luck with the stickers !!

I built the original Polarlights Mach 5 about 20 years ago. I was dismayed to see all the extras didn't make it into the reissue. Extras like the Turbine Engine, the two Buzz Saws for the front and the four Jack Stands that attached to the bottom of the car. The rear top used to hinge up to expose the Turbine. All in all though it's still a great model though. Oh and it had steering front wheels too.

Good to see this kit being reissued. I built the first issue when it came out years ago. A fun little kit. Shame PL is still using those stickers. They are paper stickers that have a very thin clear laminate. Total garbage. I have been in the sign business for over 25 years and produce vinyl decals everyday. Real vinyl decals or waterslides would have been a HUGE improvement for this kit. Like you stated. I have seen a few builds of this kit over years, BUT in different paint jobs. Really surprised at how it changes the kit. I need to pick up a few extras just for that reason. Another great vid!

I believe R2 is also coming out with the glue version of the kit...maybe they just decided to save the waterslides for that. I do think the snap should come with both. Hopefully they'll do another release with some resin figures...that'd really set the kit off!

I’m wondering if the references to screws was from a metal version of this? I’ve never seen the cartoon. Not sure it was shown in Western Canada back then but the you couldn’t possibly miss the marketing. I recall seeing metal kits in stores.

How simple would you say is the assembly? I started building with Gundam and wanted to switch things up a bit. I don't have a place to paint unfortunately but I'm looking into it when I move out. You had mentioned screws being missing and if that's necessary for this, I'm a little concerned for that

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  3 роки тому +1

It's a press fit kit so assembly is extremely simple. About as simple as they come.
Mine was missing screws, so I replaced them. If yours is missing the screws it's easy to find a couple that will fit or just use super glue to hold it. .
