To be fair, that's just the English dub. English cartoons weren't structured the way anime always has been. English cartoons were designed to be one-off piece-meal stories. Anime almost always had to be followed sequentially to really understand what was going on between episodes.
That's because it's not that far off from Speed's actual personality. In one episode, he's in a plane that's going down. He literally goes out of his way to take all of the parachutes so that the "bad guy" is left with none. You can actually watch the clip here on UA-cam, it's called "Speed Racer Kills a Man".

That bit when a car crashed into the spectator stand, something like that actually happened in 1955 at the LeMans Raceway. A lot of people died that day when a racecar (that ended up catching on fire) crashed into them at 125 MPH.

Even if this is an "edited parody", it really helps to paint a picture of just how dangerous and unpredictable racing can be, even if children are the intended audience.

That bit when a car crashed into the spectator stand, something like that actually happened in 1955 at the LeMans Raceway. A lot of people died that day when a racecar (that ended up catching on fire) crashed into them at 125 MPH.
