Poor Dee, looked like it was tough for her to make it through this one. Pat is a guitar genius and a visionary in jazz, jazz fusion and world music, incorporating sounds from all over the world into his music. Peter Gabriel does the same thing. His live performances are unforgettable. Lyle Mays, his long time collaborator and pianist passed away a little over 2 years ago. 🙏 The Pat Metheny Group sound is not for everyone but repeated listens to his music will make you appreciate him, that and his 20 Grammy awards. 🎸❤️✌️

Metheny is a prodigy, started playing with big names from a young age and taught at the Berklee College of Music. Played with Jaco Pastorius, Paul Bley, Joni Mitchell etc etc. I was lucky enough to see him for the first time in ATL when I was like 6 or 7 years old. My very first concert before that was Chick Corea

Pat Metheny, both alone and especially in collaboration with Lyle Mays, will eventually be regarded as the foremost musical composer of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. His imagination, elegance of composition, mastery of texture and timbre, exquisite taste, and nearly boundless range of musical influences is totally unparalleled in contemporary music. Pat Metheny is our living Da Vinci of music.

    HUGE rabbit hole here, Chod
Pat is a jazz legend (pronounced Meth EE Nee)
He has quite the impressive pedigree
Has played with the Best of the best
FYI Paul Wertico on drums here
His new drummer,Antonio Sanchez is also a beast. Antonio got a Grammy for the Bird movie (Michael Keaton)
Pat' writing partner//bandmate/keyboardist Lyle Mays passed away a couple years ago. Most of the PMG songs were co-written by the duo
    Some suggestions of his work
    San Lorenzo
    Are You Going With Me
    James
    First Circle
    Every Day I thank You
    Question & Answer
All the Things you Are (an old Standard he did. Listen to the Trio Live version. Killer!!)
    Have You Heard
Chod, I saw him in 1981 and he was a Big musical inspiration since then
So much diverse musical output in his almost 50 year career
    Comptemporary jazz (like this one)
    Traditional jazz
Free Jazz (he did an album with Ornette Coleman)
    Acoustic
Even had a somewhat crossover hit with David Bowie
And always always always has great drummers with him ;-)
Do your homework on him. Well worth the journey!

Pat who? Ohhhhh. You mean that guy who has WON (not been nominated, WON) SEVENTEEN GRAMMYS?
I love Pink Floyd, Yes etc, etc. I REALLY LOVE Pat M, The Pat Metheny Group and every other incarnation.
I thought you mentioned being a Jazz Leaning guy?
The guy is Perennially listed in the top 5 greatest jazz guitarists of all time. Articles about him abound in every Jazz publication in existence. Come on Chod.
Please except this as good hearted ball busting. Get your shit together! Lol!
At 67, and child of the 70s, living a half hour train ride to NYC, I have been to hundreds of concerts. None more than Pat. 14 times in 5 different states (NY, NJ, PA, VA and FL). I've planned vacations around his concerts. He's not for everybody BUT if you are a TRUE music lover, it will be love at 3rd sight. That's because most of the compositions are too complex to fully get and appreciate at first listen. You know you that you love it but you're not yet sure exactly why.
Finally, I would suggest you listen to Pat for your own pleasure. He'll likely not be appreciated by the casual listeners.
PS Let your beloved know that Metheny has done numerous movie scores.

PAT METHENY is always my choice when I'm motoring down the Interstates out west with my wife, watching America slide by the windshield. Give a listen to "Slip Away", "Eighteen", "Phase Dance", "Facing West" - all great tunes for road trips. Somehow, the speedometer always magically reads 80 mph+ when a Metheny song comes on! The first time I ever heard Pat Metheny was in a movie theater watching "The Falcon and the Snowman"...and hearing the theme song, "This is Not America."....I knew then I had to find out and get into this group's music...and Oboy, what a treasure trove I discovered!

" Minuano" has the rhythm of an Argentinean chacarera, this song perfectly could be a symbol of the interchange of energies between the American Eagle abd the Argentinean Condor. In this song the vocals are from the Argentinean musician Pedro Aznar, tbe keyboards are from the genious Lyle Mays and the whole band is stellar for sure. A true masterpiece of jazz- fusion

No Pedro Aznar on this, it was Ledford and Blamires

Great observations in this track. Definitely Pedro’s voice is an instrument all by itself. Didn’t find Pat Metheny Group till late in my life but when I did I never looked back! That music and time was special and rare. Pat is still making great music for all to enjoy!

This is straight jazz but with a very modern take. Pat Metheny was considered one of the leading guitarists of his time. He played for a while with Joni Mitchell when she was touring. He recorded on a label called ECM Records and anything on that label is worth a listen. Anyone who was anyone did records for ECM and to me they were the Blue Note of our time (70's to the present).

There is a lot of excellent Pat Metheny Group music. Pretty much every album and song the group recorded is good. You might want to check out the album "We Live Here."

Nice interpretation at the end. PMG music, each individual tine and the whole 40 years of Pat Metheny Group catalog is a musical story, a journey.
However, as much as this is PMG music, it is YOUR story!

Universel.

I saw the PMG open a show years ago with this song. Imagine a large pool deck with about 1000 people watching them from across a hotel pool on a hot summer afternoon in Sacramento. They were as casually dressed for the environment. The sun and heat turned to dusk and the group kept playing, then the dusk turned to night but they kept playing. Late night still more. You could tell they wanted to be there and loved playing in such a casual spot. Finally after playing for hours a hours they had to stop and we had been given an experience I think even surprised them. Mays even smiled most of the time. One of the best days of my life due to and shared with The Pat Metheny Group. I bet even he still remembers that day. One of those days it all lined up. It's what we live for.

Great album and choice for the first of Pat's 'Brazilian Phase' of music ... but I think 'First Circle' is another level altogether. The live version on UA-cam is great too.

Oh yes, that will take you to places you haven't been to before...
Pat's music is very ethereal, and I think Dee may find this oddly fun.
(Think of driving the coast road in a convertible, the different movements, the towns going by, the waves crashing on the shore.)
    This is jazz/fusion (mellow).
It may be time for some Jean Luc Ponté, Chod?

This piece is a one-of-a-kind experience when you see it in concert and I highly recommend that she look up the Wikipedia page on Pat Metheny to understand the type of influence he has had on music and jazz in particular eventually she will have that the light comes on moment for her and it will never be the same., Just ask anyone who has listened to Pat for the first time and then listened again later, they all had that moment of going from confusion to enlightenment to self-discovery to Joy listening to this genius at work

Love It when I see young people your age into Pat Metheny music. Since you and your Dad are into Jazz and you play the drums, try Pat Metheny & Kenny Garrett perform a Coltrane track, Lonnie's Lament. I hope its something you enjoy and will send to your Dad.
