Timeless, you can pass it down to 10 successive generations for about 250 years in the future, yet it will still sound so refreshing and inspiring. Well, why not when its coming from the eighth wonder of the world, the compositional magic of maestro Pat Metheny.
Verdy, this was amazing that you reacted to this song!! Pat Metheny is not only considered one of the greatest jazz musicians but one of the greatest guitarists of all time. All the musicians in his band are fantastic, but his musical association with his keyboardist, the late Lyle Mays, produced years of great performances. I was fortunate to have seen the Pat Metheny Group four times, three times at the concert hall at The University of Texas and once at the Austin Music Hall. The person who recommended this to you should be complimented!!!!
I couldn't have stated what you commented on here and better. My Sentiments EXACTLY. I loved Lyle Mays unique and surreal sound and technique. RIP Lyle and thank you for leaving us your legacy.
I discovered the Pat Metheny Group with a tune called «First Circle». That was in the 80s. 40 years later, that tune shatters me every time I listen to it. Lets me empty of everything but unaltered JOY. It's been more than 40 years of just joy. I only regret that I will never see them play again. Minuano is also a masterwork. A roller-coaster in emotions. This is the Pat Metheny Group : they make you find that incredibly complex music «easy». The unsung hero of the band is Steve Rodby, «The Bassist».
The Way Up was most likely the best concert I have seen. I was just peaking with listening to the CD over and over and over and then I saw them perform it. Part 2 solo area was unlike anything I could ever hope to see on this planet. In Metheny's home town of Kansas City (close to Lees Summit) and I swear during that Way Up part 2 solo, at different times parts of the crowd wouldn't be able to take it and just go wild. It was amazing, but reaction videos to that may be challenging as I started getting into it after the tenth listen and ever since. First timers of The Way Up may be flumoxed but that's where the good music is when you know it's there and then you 'get it'. I think anyway. Quite a rant just because I saw the Way Up thoughts. Ha ha.
The Way Up was my reference for a decade... The structure is absolulty brillant. And the thema is just making me jumping on my feet each and every time !
I’ve known Pat Metheny since 1977 .. I ❤️ LOVED your reaction to the music and the musicians. Their Keyboards musician ( Lyle Mays - RIP ) played many sounds you were unaware of on his synthesizers. Lyle was a genius and wrote music along with Pat. There will never be another PMG - Pat Metheny Group without Lyle Mays
... I saw Pat Metheny for the first time back in 1975 in Utrecht (Holland), only just a 21 years old virtuoso guitar player of the also great Gary Burton Band ... PMG didn't even exist yet ... too bad time passes so quickly ...
Oh yeah! Pat Metheny is my main man. I live in the Kansas City, Missouri metro area, which includes Pat Metheny's hometown, Lee's Summit, Missouri. I think I've seen him perhaps six or seven times. If you ever have a chance to see him live . . . BUY TICKETS! Metheny is a legend and a music treasure.
I'd always loved this piece. Back in the 90's I was living in Chicago and Pat Metheny Group was playing The Chicago Theater. I didn't have a ticket, but I walked by the theatre, nonetheless. It was kismet that as i was passing by, the theater doors were open and Minuano (Six Eight) was starting. The ushers allowed me to walk in, unobstructed, and I was able to see this masterpiece played live! Truly memorable.
What a pleasant surprise! Pat Metheny is a musical genius. Been a fan for almost 40 years. Lyle Mays the pianist is also a genius. Or was, sadly he passed a year or so ago.
The Pat Metheny Group…in all of its variations has been fhe finest ensemble of musicians to ever take the stage in my lifetime. 20+ Grammies don’t lie. And Pat is so far beyond all other guitarists in terms of phrasing, intonation and sheer skill that he simultaneously makes those of us who try to play both inspired and hopeless to ever achieve anything approaching his skill.
Great guitarist, one of the pioneers of using guitar synth, too. Always has a stellar band surrounding him. Lyle Mays, his long time keyboardist and co-composer of a lot of the Metheny Group's music just passed away in 2020.
Pat Metheny is one of the greatest guitarists on the planet, but many people are not aware of him because he generally releases material in jazz/jazz-fusion genres. I saw him perform live on Halloween at an old theater in Salem, MA in the mid 80's and it was a phenomenal show.
First, thank you. This is my favorite band on the planet. I've never missed a concert. Also, my two favorite musicians. RIP Lyle. Their music is vast. Their discography is amazing. Please try First Circle.
This era of Metheny always grabs me deep down. The chords ,the music, the playing but its the sound of the people singing the melody that gets me. Nice to see a young person discover this piece as for me it transcends jazz. If we did another Golden record to represent humankind for another Voyager this should be on it..
Pat Metheny doesn't sell 100's of millions of albums, but some of the greatest musicians on the planet line up to play with him, and the awards speak for themselves. There is only one Pat Metheny, you can't compare his genius and his work ethic to anyone else. Part of the attraction to him is how low key he is. Out of hundreds of others, this too is a great introductory piece.
Great reference to Eric!!! He and Pat Metheny are my two favorite of all time. Of course Eddie and SRV are in that group, but Eric Johnson and Pat Metheny are the two that I go back to almost on a daily basis.
It's great to see younger people exploring and getting moved by music beyond their normal genres of interest! I was mostly a rock and roll fan when someone gave me a ticket to a PMG concert on my college campus in the early 1980's. It was life changing for me. I was in like the mob. Seen PMG in concert about 10 times over the years (and PM in trios as well) and I wish it had been triple that many times. For about 5 yrs after discovering PM, few in the circles I ran around in knew about him. Then on a first date, when I pressed the cassette player play button and my date said "That is As Fall Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls", I was gobsmacked. Fast forward 35 years later, two kids, a few dogs and a few cats and that same "date" and I will be going to see PM this summer at the Kennedy Center. It may sound silly, but most everything I am grateful for in my life has flowed from knowing the music of Pat Metheny (and Lyle Mays).
It's you want to see some more live Pat Metheny, along with Jaco Pastorius and Joni Mitchell, check out "Amelia" from the Shadows and Light concert. It's great.
I've seen the Pat Metheny Group perform three times, now, over the last 40 years, and it's always memorable. Pat and keyboardist Lyle Mays (now deceased) composed the songs so that all the players mesh so well, with fantastic attention-to-detail (like the whistling and the vocals). I've never seen this particular live performance, so it was a real pleasure to watch. If I were to recommend another cut, check out "San Lorenzo" on his live "Travels" album or the song "Letter From Home." Or "First Circle." Or...
Wow. A Metheny reaction. You are brilliant young woman. I first saw Metheny and Lyle Mays (his piano player, since deceased, sadly) in 1980 at a jass festival in Toronto, an array of guitars all tuned differently. Oodles of Grammys since, the premier jazz fusion guitarist of this generation, young lady. You've entered Metheny World! Explore further. The first song he played in 1980 that night was 'San Lorenzo' ... and I've never forgotten. I would that to be your next listen. Be well, keep extending your love for music. It's the language of life. /M.
I was there the night this was recorded. Been a PM fan for about 40 years myself, and this is one of his greatest. As amazing this is, you should check out the LP version from 1987 (on Still Life [Talking]) with an extended introduction. It's a whole other level of awesome.
It's wonderful to see a young person who can appreciate jazz and the incredibly talented musicians who play it. Pat Metheny is a monster. I got into him in the mid 70s when his albums The Pat Metheny Group and Bright Size Life came out.
Greetings from Oregon. My 23 year old cat and I wish you and your family Happy New Year. Whenever I play your reactions, Phido, my cat always sits next to me. We love your channel..rock on..
Helli Verdy!! I appreciate you like this state of the art from Pat Metheney Group. I heard in an interview to Pedro Aznar, an Argentinean musician who was in the group by the time of this composition that Pat one day appeared with a lot of written music especially composed for him taking into account he is Argentinean. This song has the rythm of the Argentinesn chacarera. For me it' s a symbol of the union of Angloi- Argentinean culture and in this country there ar3 beings with great light that one day will serve to illuminate the rest if the World. I think this is an announce of it.
Thanks so much for the video and the channel! Love watching and listening to your reaction. Pat and the group are amazing…been following them since the late 70’s.
First caught up with Pat live while he was touring his breakout album in the 70’s called, “American Garage.” This is one of a few thousand shows Pat’s musical journey has taken him, to every corner of the globe. The passing of pianist Lyle Mays was a loss for music lovers everywhere. His style and compositions are uniquely his own creation. Also caught the two of them along with bassist, Jaco Pastorious backing Joni Mitchell on tour back then. All masters in their own rights. Lots to get to here.
WHO EVER TOLD YOU TO LISTEN TO THE LIVE VERSION CHEATED YOU, BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T PLAY THE INTRO. IN THE ALBUM RECORDING. THE STUDIO VERSION HAS A 2:45 INTRODUCTION THAT PUTS THE REST OF THE SONG IN PROPER CONTEXT, AND IS OUT OF THIS FLIPPIN WORLD!!! CHECK IT OUT.
Of all the concerts I've seen in my life, they all come down to 2 kinds; Pat Metheny GROUP and everything else. I've seen a couple dozen PMG shows up n down the west coast, all iterations of the group since First Circle.. Each and every one was the absolute best concert I've ever been to 😅 ... Experienced! I soo wish he'd group and tour one more time :(
I agree that an amazing part of the show is: such high-level musicianship all around, but the vibe is always there- the absolute connection to the audience.
Love Pat saw him in Montréal circa 88(?) on McGill college st Jazz fest stage on st-Catherine epic epic epic concert sound engineer delay was perfect no echo so clean…💛🧡❤️🩷🖤💜💙💚💛
Pat Metheny/Pat Metheny Group/Unity have won more grammys and win more often when they are nominated than anyone else. He has 31. George Solti the late conductor is listed at #1 with 31. You can win a drink with that a bar, that's for sure.
Nice! This is an oft overlooked genre and I’m glad you are learning about it. When I got my first stereo in 1978, I asked a family friend about what kind of music I should buy. He suggested a couple of greatest hits albums (Chicago, BTO, Doobies), but mentioned he was taking classes at the University of Miami Music School, and I should come and see Pat Metheny and the Jazz Ensemble there. I never made it to see the live shows with him, but I did remember and found records later and dallied quite a bit with a wide range of jazz and fusion artists.
ua-cam.com/video/tLXBABH2JuY/v-deo.html Michael Hedges is worth a listen. This is a popular track called Aerial Boundaries. Guitar-only live track starts at 3 minutes.
I found this at a right time. I had a Facebook feed picture of Metheny and Donald Fagan of Steely Dan jamming which some remarked was odd but they also said Metheny wasn't wearing a striped shirt in that picture. And here he is.😊I think that is Bill Stewart on drums. Knew the name and face but hadn't really heard a lot of him. Interesting song.
Verdi, I like your reaction videos so much 🎶😊🙏 My heart opens, when I see, how you live the music. I really enjoy experiencing the music, which I love, "new" with you 🥰 I also love, that you listen to so many different styles of Music 👍Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays are one of my faves in Jazz Music. I'm a musician myself. I am very happy when I see, how much joy you have in good music. Then I also have hope, that good music will continue to be appreciated in the future 😉 Thank you very much for your channel and your videos. I would be very happy, if you would make a reaction video for Opeth-Hope Leaves (live at the Royal Albert Hall) and Porcupine Tree-Way out of here (live at Tilburg). Greetings from Germany 🤗
Verdy, you should react to "First Circle" from Pat Metheny Group. And as it seems you love rock music, you could react to the amazing "Root of Coincidence" from Metheny. He had the Grammy for this incredible instrumental rock performance.
9:07 En fait, les xylophones dont les lamelles sont en bois (et non plus en métal) sont appelés des marimbas. :) Merci pour votre charmante réaction, c'est très touchant...
Hi Verdy, I must admit that Jazz is not my thing 🤨, however I consider Pat Metheny a virtuous genius. I recommend you listen to the beautiful ballad "DREAM OF THE RETURN" ua-cam.com/video/gVxhyeaG87w/v-deo.html with the voice of the great Argentine singer Pedro Aznar, if you want to relax after a very long day 🥴... this It's your song, I'm sure you'll like it.
Nobody plays like Metheny. Nobody. Absolute genius
Damm right!
Absolute faboules. It’s posibble to play The music of Pat and Lyle . On your own feel, with the love of the beautiful harmonies.
Totalmente de acuerdo, es el Maestro.
That whole album "Still Life Talking" is excellent!!!
Timeless, you can pass it down to 10 successive generations for about 250 years in the future, yet it will still sound so refreshing and inspiring. Well, why not when its coming from the eighth wonder of the world, the compositional magic of maestro Pat Metheny.
Absolutely 💯 percent pure gold.

Pat Metheny is one of the greatest jazz guitarist ever IMHO. I am so happy you got "introduced" to jazz with Pat Metheny.
I discovered the Pat Metheny Group with a tune called «First Circle». That was in the 80s. 40 years later, that tune shatters me every time I listen to it. Lets me empty of everything but unaltered JOY. It's been more than 40 years of just joy. I only regret that I will never see them play again.

The same happens to me when I listen to it.
"First Circle" is what I want played at my wake when the time comes. A song of complexity and triumph.
So good... RIP Lyle Mays 🎼
Pat Metheny (and the late Lyle Mays) are a national treasure we get to share with the world.
Yeah, the whistling is awesome!
Pat Metheny is a deep rabbit hole, with a large discography. He always surrounds himself with stellar musicians. Try his album “The Way Up.” 🙂
"The Way Up” is a work of outstanding artistry.
I clearly remember my ride to the store the day that was released. I can still picture my interaction with the clerk. I bought 2 copies.
The Way Up was most likely the best concert I have seen. I was just peaking with listening to the CD over and over and over and then I saw them perform it. Part 2 solo area was unlike anything I could ever hope to see on this planet. Let me add, do 'The Way Up' LIVE...!! I feel that is even better than the album. Peace
The Way Up was my reference for a decade... The structure is absolulty brillant. And the thema is just making me jumping on my feet each and every time !
And this is live! I have been to hundreds of gigs and Metheny’s live bands are right up there with the best of the very best
I’ve known Pat Metheny since 1977 .. I ❤️ LOVED your reaction to the music and the musicians. Their Keyboards musician ( Lyle Mays - RIP ) played many sounds you were unaware of on his synthesizers. this blows "rock" music away! its every type of music combined. i love how the songs build to a cresendo and then an unpredictable ending.
Pat Metheny was teaching music at Berkley when he was 16. Genius
forty years listening to this and every time is as exhilarating as the first. It never loses its power. As is the same with all Pat Metheny music.
I'd always loved this piece. Back in the 90's I was living in Chicago and Pat Metheny Group was playing The Chicago Theater. I didn't have a ticket, but I walked by the theatre, nonetheless. This one of my favorites from PMG. Just like: First Circle, Third Wind, Beat 70, Last Rain Home, Have You Heard and Here to Stay.
RIP Lyle Mays
What a pleasant surprise! Pat Metheny is a musical genius. Been a fan for almost 40 years.
Lyle Mays the pianist is also a genius. Or was, sadly he passed a year or so ago.
If this your first Metheny experience, it most certainly won't be your last...welcome to real music!

New subscriber.. Been listening to Pat since 1979.. Love seeing new person discover this great music.. Hopefully there will be more Thank you Verdy 😀
I wish I could like this twice, I'm so appreciative of the fact that you dig this. Thank you, and thank the Pat Metheny Group.

I love this melody, it reminds me of the beautiful landscapes of the south of my country
Pat Metheny is a brilliant musician and composer!
Masterpiece of sound beauty and a journey of one's soul.
I had the privilege to see this live in Caracas-Venezuela during the Secret Story tour. Mind blowing!
Rip Lyle and Mark
I love one young people discover my favorite music! Everything by the PMG is worth hearing. Everything from Lyle Mays on his own too.
This era of Metheny always grabs me deep down. The chords ,the music, the playing but its the sound of the people singing the melody that gets me. Nice to see a young person discover this piece as for me it transcends jazz. If we did another Golden record to represent humankind for another Voyager this should be on it..
Nice watching yours smile and really enjoy the sounds as you listen and hear just how fantastic pmg is
beautiful reaction...thank you.

That's what I love about your channel, we never know what to expect.
Much like Eric Johnson, Pat Metheny has such a beautiful, clean, and distinctive guitar tone. Incredible musicians all around.
Great reference to Eric!!! He and Pat Metheny are my two favorite of all time. Of course Eddie and SRV are in that group, but Eric Johnson and Pat Metheny are the two that I go back to almost on a daily basis.
one of my top 10 guitarists..a giant ..would love to see you react to 'April Joy" by the pat metheny group..love your channel,Kent in Ohio
he’s just so bloody mesmerizing
From the grammy award winning Album "Still Life (talking)". Perhaps the best Jazz Fusion Album .. ever made.
So glad you're checking out the Pat Metheny Group. Lots to hear!
It's great to see younger people exploring and getting moved by music beyond their normal genres of interest!
I was mostly a rock and roll fan when someone gave me a ticket to a PMG concert on my college campus in the early 1980's. It was life changing for me. I was in like the mob. RIP Lyle Mays. I hope you listen to more of this group's early era. Best gateway jazz possible.
Thanks so much for the video and the channel! Love watching and listening to your reaction. Pat and the group are amazing…been following them since the late 70’s.
The best....♥
Luv Pat Metheny. I was lucky enough to see him once in Toronto and again in Montreal. Nice choice Verdy !!!

In my grandfathers car when I was in junior high school. I never forgot this music become addicted to Pat🎸 from Japan
So, so so many Pat Matheny songs I could recommend
"Already the end??" Hahaha it's an 8 minute song! Good music makes the minutes fly by.
Pat Metheny taught at the University of Miami and Berklee College of Music with jazz vibraphonist Gary Burton.
the smile on your face says it all
Incredible musicianship. RIP Lyle you are so missed❤❤❤

I knew.. Ariane! I knew you were born to listen to this music .... You're the best reviewer to fusion and ProgRock... Keep going!

The bass playing is what jazz is. But that was massive prog rock.

Dang, I've never heard this live version - his solo is magnificent.
It was very satisfying to watch you react to this classic. You could tell you were sincerely into it
Wau, this was unexpected. Pat is the best improviser and thus guitarist alive imho.
so good to see this.
sinon jaco de pat metheny c est exceptionnel t adorerais
The xylophone is actually a marimba. But yeah, it's pretty damn classy stuff.
Excellent!
Love her comments ❤
She mentions Pat Metheny being on fire. He is this way all the time while performing.
Glad to see you and a few others reactors listening to the great Pat Metheny Group .Please react to their masterpiece, "The First Circle".
The "bright" sound of Metheny"s guitar is both unique and incredible.
This literally just the tip of the iceberg. Welcome to M&M world (Metheny, Mays) we trust you will enjoy your stay. 🙏🏽✌🏽♥️
Que dupla hacían lyle y pat,👏

Groovy. Sunday Jazz festival.
I like how jazz always sounds like the guys just walk in and they say hey man let's just cut it loose for a minute or two!
Metheny-Mays is such a great synergy that will never happen in the world of music again. Unfortunately...

The xylophone interlude .. my favourite part..
It's a marimba (wood) vs vibraphone (metal)
9:07 En fait, les xylophones dont les lamelles sont en bois (et non plus en métal) sont appelés des marimbas. :) Merci pour votre charmante réaction, c'est très touchant...
How cool…
"Bright Size Life" live with Richard Bona (Bass solo) is ultra Epic .
Bravo pour ta photo de Led Zeppelin sur ton mur ;-)
I knew you were hooked on this masterpiece when I saw the 4:12 to 4:22 mark of the video.
