RIP Burt Lancaster and Ray Liotta. Both performances in this movie were my absolute favorites. I saw this in the theater and it was really something to see everyone, especially grown men, openly tear up during the end. All these decades later and I still tear up. Great choice guys!

Annie is one of my favorite movie wives ever. Doesn't understand what's happening with her husband but knows he believes in what he's doing and never waivers in her support even in the face of financial hardship and community ostracism, even willing to publicly throw down with the Nazi cow that insults him. Love her.

Yeah, it's a really refreshing character. She's supportive, but she's coming at it from her own angle, with her own very different personality. She's not the nagging doubting wife of the hero character, nor is she a doting wife looking dewy eyed and clinging to his arm character

2 movies where it is never considered unmanly to bawl your eyes out: "Field of Dreams" and "Brian's Song" (the original with James Caan and Billy Dee Williams, 1972 IIRC).

They held the Field of Dreams game in 2021 and 2022, but have paused because they’ve been building a new youth baseball/softball complex on the site. Not sure if/when they’ll resume. The first one, between the Yankees and White Sox, was pretty cool (I’m a Mets fan and hate the Yankees-so it was fun to watch them lose on a walk-off home run lol). Kevin Costner and the players, wearing 1919 throwback uniforms, walked out of the cornfield on to the playing field. Good thing for baseball, and smart marketing idea for MLB.

As an Iowan who watches your West Wing and Good Places reactions, and who has seen almost every Field of Dreams reaction, the UA-cam algorithm must have been like, "have I got the video for you!" when you uploaded this.
I would definitely check out the opening to the first MLB Field of Dreams game, and if you're ever driving to Chicago or something, it's absolutely worth detouring and visiting the field outside of Dyersville.
There were a ton of "Is this heaven? No, it's Iowa" bumper stickers in Iowa in the 90s, and the state's motto for a while was Fields of Opportunities. Our local minor league team also used to play the "Army of steamrollers" monologue before every game started, so baseball fans in Iowa have definitely adopted this movie.

Nice reaction guys. Having grown up in a baseball family this is the ultimate childhood fantasy - being able to play catch with your father when you were about same age. No man can get through that ending - "Hey Dad, want to have a catch?" - without that strong, heartfelt emotion. Maybe this is heaven.

Regarding James Earl Jones' voice - he gave an interview where he said he had been doing movies for years but it wasn't until he did the voice of Darth Vader and he voice was separated from his appearance that people realized what an amazing voice he had. I think he is such a commanding physical presence that his voice just fits him naturally and you might not notice. After that, people started casting him in roles that emphasized the power of his voice.

This film is a masterclass in setup and payoff. If you want moments to make your audience cry, or laugh, or cheer, you have to set it up. And this movie allows this slow build towards that end and it was incredibly well done. As well of the other stuff you guys mentioned - the cinematography, the cast, the writing. It's just so good.

I'm not a huge sports person -- the only thing I ever watched with semi-consistency was Wimbledon and U.S. Open tennis because my mom's a freak for it, lol -- so I went into this film with no expectations, except maybe that I wouldn't be into it. Cut to me having watched and rewatched this over and over again. It's just so beautiful! (And everyone I know cries by the end of the film - it's so moving, you just can't help it!) It's a love letter to fathers and sons, family, relationships, passion, living life to the fullest and following your dreams. It's about so much more than "just" baseball.
If no one's said it yet, semi-recently Kevin Costner went back to where they filmed this movie, and they had a baseball game there (the field's still there). Maybe in honor of the anniversary of this film? I can't remember. Just google "kevin costner field of dreams reunion" and you should find some footage of it. They walked out of the corn field like the players do in the movie. 😄 And just the idea that everyone came to watch the game, all these years later ("People will come")... that's so cool. ❤

    Delightful reaction and review!
I lost my dad only three years after this film was made. I miss him a lot, and this movie makes me cry every time I see it.
I have always maintained that Terence Mann is supposed to be a prophet -- Elijah, we are told, was taken bodily into Heaven without dying, and so we expect his return. Mann will return from Heaven and give us the news.
"Shoeless Joe" is a novel, not a biography.

This was Bert Lancaster's final role. And he killed it!!!! The newspaper clippings about Doc Graham that the librarian was reading were actual clips from the local paper from the time when Doc Graham died. And the cars at the end were all the residents of the nearby town as extras they got to line up and drive to the farm. Fabulous film, a masterpiece that holds up virtually forever. I cry every time I see it.

  • @harrydoupe9315

Great one, Gents. Couple of quick things - the film is based on WP Kinsella's novel "Shoeless Joe" who, while they changed a lot, was very happy they stuck to the spirit of the story. He also liked Kevin Costner for the role when the studio was against it. Also, the shot with all the cars was the last thing filmed, and to get the shot 1500 local residents lined up their cars and the town of Dyersville was blacked out so the headlights would be all you saw.

Just recently read that the way they did the shot at the end was to get everybody in the area to come out to the road. They had them flick their high beams off and on so they wouldn't look too static. So yup, you were right. No CGI, just good old-fashioned movie "magic."

None of the cars at the end in the line are moving. They are just flashing their head lights in intervals. The first car at the from of the line was the owner of the property. All the others are people who lived in the town.
On the other side of the corner there is a stadium they play major league games at. They are planning on building more fields for little league and softball games.

I live 45 minutes away my whole life. In the book burning scene, my HS banner is in the back ground. At the end, they put a call out on the local radio station to have as many people drive to the film set. They had the drivers turn their lights on and off to appear they were moving.

Secondly, if you merge Mary from "It's a Wonderful Life ", Annie from this film & Grace Kelly from "Rear Window" ....could you imagine the kind of woman/wife!! Lastly, you mentioned the cinematography, lighting & that the film paid homage to cinema past. Not aware if you have, but I must bring up DeMill's "Ben Hur", David Lean's "Lawrence of Arabia" & "Dr Zhivago"...three of the most epic films ever. Masterclass in filmmaking; fantastic scripts, lighting was superb, & the scope &cinematography were some of the best ever. If you've not had the pleasure of watching these, I press that you do. Think I'll stick around to see if you do any classics.

Yeah, Ray Liotta batted right-handed and threw left-handed in the film (and presumably, in real life), whereas Shoeless Joe Jackson was exactly the opposite-batted lefty, threw righty-which is the more common combination, by far (I believe Rickey Henderson is the only position player-i.e. non-pitcher-in the Hall of Fame to have batted righty and thrown lefty). Also, Frank Whaley as Moonlight Graham batted righty in the film, but the real Moonlight Graham batted lefty (whose life story as told in the movie is pretty accurate, although the dates are fudged, and in reality, “Doc” Graham played minor league ball for a couple more years after his one major league appearance).

The issue of Terrences' transition is a perfect metaphor when you think about it. We are left with an unanswered questionl, did he die or not. Once I was talking religion with my dad and he was probably in his seventies at the time. He reminded me although we find religion even the bible, we are never given all the answers. Part of the creators plan is that we are not supposed to know the answer for every question. That we are not entitled to an answer to everyone of our questions. God does not owe us ever lasting life. He doesnt owe us anything at all.

Great reaction. I showed this film to my parents when it came out on VHS tape, and my dad cried like a baby. Thanks for pointing out the cinematography. I didn't think about it at the time, so it's nice to have a better understanding. On Robin Hood Prince of Thieves: a lot of people (especially Brits) complain about Kevin Costner's non-British accent. Don't listen to it. The truth is NONE of the accents are authentic. The movie takes place in 1197 in the very beginning of Middle English, not that far removed from the time of Beowulf which is Old English. The English that was spoken at that time would have been basically non-understandable to modern English speakers. Even Elizabethan English which is the beginning of Modern English was closer to American English than current British English. Just wanted to nip that complaint in the bud. I loved the movie and was the first time I saw Alan Rickman who aces his portrayal of the Sheriff of Nottingham.

I won't say this is my favorite movie, because I'm of the exact age where that title will always go to Jurassic Park... but objectively, this may be the best movie that has ever been made.
I'm sure you'll get all the trivia in the comments, but I'll say this much. It is based on a book called Shoeless Joe Goes to Iowa. It's a quick, great read. Tim Busfield's character is pretty unredeemable in the book, but I've never viewed the film version as a villain. He's really just a guy watching his sister lose everything because her husband is seeing invisible people. He does his best to offer a way of keeping them in their home. Admittedly, I may be biased because I just love the actor, but from a "reasonable" standpoint, if we were all watching this from a real life perspective, we'd probably all consider him a saint.
Also I think you figured out that Terrance is JD Salinger. In the book, they don't even change his name. It's literally just JD Salinger. That is one of the many reasons that, logically, he was not "dead the whole time," but many people come to that conclusion which is okay. View it how you like.

Perhaps the bEST baseball movie NO one has reacted to is called 'The Natural' It's amazing how many of the truly superior movies are getting overlooked by this ridiculous process of only using the Patreon. You then react to the SAME movies every other reactor watched, while missing the best ones. I'm pretty much done watching these reactions because even the best movies, I can only watch again so many times.

If you like Road movies you should watch Kalifornia. It has Brad Pitt Juliette Lewis and David duchovny in it.

Man, why do people always ruin these with cutting out the movie when they comment. You can have both on the screen at the same time you know. Unwatchable.

It probable has something to do with the fact that reactors are limited on how much video they are allowed to show. I'm not sure what you are specifically referring to, but our editor let as much into the final edit as is allowed.

I listen to a right wing podcast both of you would hate but he does a book club. While the prose are amazing this is an example of the book being meh but the movie rocks. Also I'm turning 36 in 2 weeks so I'm thinking about my dad (passed) and me now.

The PTA scene was the worst scene in the whole movie and the movie didn't need it. It brought a political bent to the film that was useless.

The main reason for the scene was to add to the character development of Annie as well as give background for Terrence Mann. It was a necessary scene

If you thought one of the main scenes in this film was useless, why did you carry on watching it then, because you couldn't have noticed how important it was in every way.
There always has to be one, practice what you preach, because you seem to want attention don't you.
      Shame really 😅

@@jennywren7822 Every movie has a weak scene so if I take your advice, I watch a movie until a bad scene happens and then leave the theatre or turn off the TV. I have no problem with people who like the scene and this is still one of my favorite movies of all time. But thanks for the attention!

That scene at the end gets me every time.🥲
I spent a couple months in the midwest in the summer of 1984, and you don't need to wait around long to get skies like in the movie. My recollection is that sunsets like in the movie were regular occurrences. It's just awesome to look out over cornfields as far as the eye can see, on a warm summer evening, with a brilliant sunset, maybe a couple wispy clouds in the distance. If you ever get a chance to travel through Iowa and Nebraska in the summertime, take it.
Burt Lancaster was also great (in a small role) in the movie Local Hero (1983)
Bull Durham (1988) is another great Kevin Costner baseball film.
Major League (1989) and A League of Their Own (1992) Are also good baseball movies.
