I know it’s cliche in Nebraska to say this, but when you look at all the facts and take all things into consideration, I truly believe Tom Osborne is the GOAT when it comes to being a head coach in college football.
There’s obviously other coaches in this conversation like Nick Saban etc… Maybe I’ll do a show on this one day, but when it comes to Nick Saban for example (and I have nothing but the utmost respect for him) I’d argue that he’s the greatest recruiter of all time. Just my almost completely unbiased opinion 😂

I agree. Saban is an excellent coach, but he has had the advantage of a much better recruiting radius at Alabama. Not sure he would have had the same success if he were at Nebraska oe anywhere else in the middle of the country. Excellent video.

@carrikerchronicles90 I agree 100% Adam. Especially the way he ran his offense. People might not recall but I remember that 1984 Orange Bowl against Miami for the National Championship and on their final drive they had a 4th and 7 with less than a minute to play in the game and Mike Rozier out of the game with a bad ankle. Tom ran a triple option where Turner Gill pitched the ball to backup RB Jeff Smith and he went 28 yards for the TD. I remember thinking then, that Tom was a genius, as I'm sure Miami thought they were going to run and Tom decided to go with his strength and run the option which went for a TD on a 4th down call! Genius! That's the Tom Osborne I remember! Adam, I sent you an email a few days ago. Did you get it? I didn't receive your response! Love your show! GBR!

@@BigRedCountrythe play for the 24-yard td on 4th and 8 in the Orange Bowl was an early form of run-pass option. Osborne himself confirmed this. Gill’s first read was to throw, but if the receiver wasn’t open, he was to run the option, which he of course did. The play in itself is an example of how innovative and ahead of his time Osborne was in designing plays and play calling, as well as in getting the most out of his players, as such a play was perfectly suited to the talents of Turner Gill.

@@Larryzelreh Yes, I know. That's what I meant about a triple option, which is what it was called then. Either throw, pitch or keep. I remember Coach Osborne putting it in for this game. Same play was called for the two point conversion but Turner thought he had a lane to throw it and it got tipped.

What gets me is just the amount of character Tom Osborne displayed over the course of his career. He has always shown himself as a man of integrity. He faced a lot of adversity and I've never known him to complain. I'm not aware of him ever making excuses for coming up short. He could have elected to leave to go to Colorado for the money but he elected to stay the course here at Nebraska.
Through it all, he remained faithful.

He was and is just a class act. We were lucky to have had him and Charlie McBride!

i'm still P.O.'d about Penn State's "L" shaped football field followed by the trapped TD catch in '82. The ref was standing 5 yards away when the receiver's first foot landed 2 feet out of bounds...EVERYBODY could see it in real time on TV even before the replays.

He's been my favorite Coach since I was a little boy. There's no one quite like our Dr. Tom.

Every time I see highlights from that 95 team it is just unbelievable how good they were. There is and probably never will be a team like that again in college football that absolutely destroyed everyone that year! Damn that was fun. GBR

I remember all those plays...vividly. Especially that heartbreaker at Miami when that 2-point conversion pass bounced off Jeff Smith's shoulder pad. Turner threw it just slightly behind him...he was open. Those were the days when a loss would depress me for days. Nowadays, I've come to expect them. Hoping Matt Rhule can return us to relevancy once again. GBR.

There's a lot of the old Coach in Rhule. Man deeply rooted in faith, keeps calm, comes in with a plan, understands it's the players doing the work and holds them accountable, I have a good feeling about Nebraska football's future.

These are really cool. Like documentary. Can't ever get enough of Nebraska football when they were great for 30 plus years. Love to see breakdowns of who won national championships and who could have or should have or who was in the talk of it and how each team faced adversity throughout the season to collide with one another

They were clearly robbed against FSU in that title game, the phantom block in the back cost them the points they should've had to win the game

In hindsight, Colorado doesn't want Tom Osborne. Did you see where the player tried to hug him after the game- get away!

Watching this gave me chills. Hard to argue he is not the goat. If he stays another ten years after he found the formula who knows how many titles we have. I'm glad I got to grow up in the glory days. So much excitement and fun.
