  • In this video, Andy Chatfield (Lead Support Technician) reviews how to set a static IP address for your PTZOptics camera. The easiest way on most IP networks is to simply use our "IP Address Settings Tool" available at ptzoptics.com/downloads. But if you network does not allow for this tool to operate properly you can connect directly to the camera via a ethernet cable and use the network settings tools in Windows to connect directly to your PTZOptics camera. Once you have configured your computer's network settings to connect directly to the camera you can then set a static IP address. This is a step some customers need to take who have corporate networks that block multi-cast tools such as our IP address settings tool.

      Hello!
When setting up your camera's IP address, the terms "permanent IP address" and "static IP address" are often used interchangeably. Both refer to the practice of assigning a specific IP address to the camera that does not change over time. This is in contrast to a dynamic IP address, which can change each time the device connects to the network.
Here's why you should consider setting up a static (permanent) IP address for your camera:
Consistent Access: A static IP ensures that the camera's IP address remains the same, making it easier to access consistently, either for live viewing, recording, or configuration purposes.
Network Reliability: In a network with many devices, a static IP address helps prevent IP conflicts and makes network management more straightforward.
Compatibility with Network Systems: Certain network setups or integrations may require devices to have a fixed IP address for proper operation.
Steps to Set Up a Static IP Address:
Access the Camera's Web Interface: Connect to your camera using its current IP address, which you can usually find via the camera's software or your router's device list.
Locate Network Settings: In the camera's web interface or software, find the section for network or IP settings.
Change IP Settings: Switch from DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) to a static or manual IP setting.
      Configure IP Details:
IP Address: Choose an IP address within your network's range but outside the DHCP range to avoid conflicts.
Subnet Mask: Usually 255.255.255.0 for most small networks.
Default Gateway: Your router's IP address.
DNS Server: Can be your router's IP or a public DNS server like Google’s (8.8.8.8).
Save and Restart: Save the settings and restart the camera if necessary.
Verify the Setup: Access the camera using the new static IP to ensure the configuration is correct.
Document the IP Address: Keep a record of static IP addresses in use on your network.
      Considerations:
Avoid IP Conflicts: Make sure the static IP is unique on your network.
Router Settings: Some routers allow assigning static IPs based on MAC addresses. This method might be easier and keeps the settings centralized on the router.
In summary, using a static IP address for your camera is generally the preferred method for ensuring reliable and consistent network connectivity, especially in setups where frequent access to the camera is needed.
