So I plan on doing a number of solo camps this month and decided to go wild camping off the West Highland Way at Loch Lomond. After an exceptionally tiring trek, I reached my destination. Along from me were 3 gentlemen who arrived at this location via jetski - more of this in the 2nd part. Midgies were tolerable and became more tolerable when I applied deet. 1st part is just an intro, before I moved to another part of the beach and engage in a bit of bushcrafting, swimming, and jet skiing!

In future, should I start splitting a 2 day trek into 2 videos? What is the ideal length of video for you? I say about 10 - 15 minutes for me.
20-30 mins minimum
I happily watch hour+ videos.
@@KreekyKat5983 Thanks for your input, Kath.
@@countryside_guy What keeps you engrossed? I'd like to move to this length, but I don't think my material at this moment in time would keep interested for that length of time!
@@CraigLinton. I intend on doing that but you've hit the nail on the head. Carrying a lot of weight, positioning and setting up the tripod, bending down with all that weight, and recollecting it is a mission. That and I'm desperate to get to my spot lol.
That location is incredible!!!! Look forward to Part 2!!
Thanks Karen. I prefer it to part 1. I'll release it either next week or the end of this week. I've got a busy week ahead!
Stunning scenery as always. I know what you mean with that eerie misty view. I seek those out too. They're great for lazily resting the eyes on and letting the imagination drift. Great vid mate!
It seems to bond so well with still water. It's sort of movie like and I am trying to think of a comparison. But so peaceful and tranquil. Very good for the mind. Thanks for watching.
Very chilled as usual Monty. Looked like a great camp.
Any anger or stress that I have been experiencing was completely gone, Des. Already pumped up for my next camp!
Lovely Monty looks a amazing place need to get to the part of the country, take care. John
Plenty of spots like that on Loch Lomond mate. The east side is better.
Lovely stream at the start there. Very similar air mat to me suprised how comfy they are. Amazed I used to have a self inflating so heavy and before that even thought just a foam mat was comfy...
In summer I really just use a closed cell foam mat, but as I was going to the beach, it's best to have a sleeping mat. Which one do you have? This is a deeplee one.
@@MontyOutdoors Its the Omorc from amazon very comfy but the pillow isnt great I've had to roll an extra jumper or something on it
@@MrWildWales It's really no different to the one I have and you eventually become used to the pillow. I know your hardcore campers just use a jacket, but I find that very uncomfortable. I usually just put a jumper under or on top of a pillow as I sleep with my arm under the pillow and you can't do that while camping! Especially in winter. Have you thought about getting a trekology pillow? They are excellent.
Great wee spot and set up Monty, relaxing to watch and that food looked great. ATB A
Thanks Andrew, I hope you enjoy the second part more. Were you out this weekend?
Leave nothing but footprints and take nothing but photographs.
As always, sir!
another amazing location, great video :-)
Thanks, mate. I don't mean to hype it up, but part 2 will be better 😆
@@MontyOutdoors great to hear :-D
Hey man I can't wait reach there 😎👍
When are you going mate?
Looked great mate I like the bug net tent looked cool.
Not sure I’d appreciate them noisy buggers going past on the water tho haha
Great vid mate
The tent is a bit tight, but it's only for sleeping in. Only about 400g too.
Haha aye, but the boys were having the time of their lives!
That dinner and a lot of others you cooked looked amazing. Love that you carried a proper pan with you haha
Monty , wow what a view and dinner looked amasing and im not a veggie
Hi Carole 😂.
Check out out the Loch Skeen one to see the drone in action!
Well serene, going up to Galloway forest on saturday so hopefully weather isn't horrendous.
Where you headed mate? That area never lets down, but ensure you have a fire and have 90% deet. The midges are a nuisance right now!
@@MontyOutdoors saw you recommended stinchar Bridge car park so starting there and then walking down to Loch Macaterick. Got my midge net and jungle spray packed 💪🏻
@@dfgndfghdfghdfgh Fizz, if you are doing Loch Macaterick, I think it would be better parking at the south end of Loch Doon? Best to check mate, as I think it's closer and easier from there. Still a trek involved. And get yourself 90% Deet. Lifesystems do the best. Apply it before you settle down. I think you need to give it 15-20 minutes before it starts working.
@@MontyOutdoors gonna check that out on viewranger and see what's what mate, could be a good idea really
@@dfgndfghdfghdfgh I alternate between Google Maps, OS, and Geograph if that helps. Geograph is a remarkable site.
beautiful landscapes... great content. Thanks for that. btw what was your opinion on klymit static v?
I don't have a real personal opinion on it. I purchased it at a discounted price and after several uses, it kept deflating while I slept by about 70-80% Turns out it had a fault valve. So I requested a swap and it turns out they no longer stock it. In the end I purchased the Thermostat NeoAir xLite.
It is lightweight and compact, and one night it didn't deflate. That was a very comfortable sleep nor did I get that feeling of falling off. I seriously question the r-value though judging from other videos I have watched. Klymit have yet to update their mats with the new ASTM and I can personally see it dropping.
I think especially with outdoor Utube vids the total viewing time is personal, but certainly 20-30 mins is good and as a one single segment per day as you mention, is a great idea. Good to add longer ones occasionally for variety if you have filmed a lot of content all down to your control, but great content from a wonderful part of the world from what I have seen so far Monty 👍 Oh also subbed and I believe I am your 900 th, so congrats.
Alright mate. I'm so sorry. I've just realised this comment hasn't been responded to. I genuinely thought I did!
I appreciate the insight and I think I've decided to settle with 15-20 min videos with a variety too - shorter or longer. And thanks for subscribing - and of course watching. You've played a part in letting this channel hit over 1k subs!
All the best mate and thanks again.
Wow you didn’t waste any time editing that! What a cracking weekend it was 👌🏻 nice meeting you mate 😁 also love that tent ⛺️
It was nice to meet you, Greer and Craig as well, mate. The second part will be uploaded at the end of the week and will include the jet ski. The cameraman however, shot in vertical mode 😂. How was the journey home? I had to take the day off due to exhaustion!
Monty Outdoors, sounds good man! It was a little choppy on way back down but we got there 😂 yes all 3 of us were the same absolutely knackered and sore from that towable ring 😂. How was your journey back? That waterfall looked amazing I’ll need to go find that next time, have been enjoying your videos mate 👌🏻
Was nice meting you monty outdoors and as rhys said love the tent would be nice at night canny wait for the part 2
@@hyperlife1 It's incredible how tiring camping is. I think the heat played a part too. Journey home was fine, thanks. Its when I got home that was the issue. And cheers, buddy. I'm new, still learning, and still thinking of what direction to go in. Give us a shout if you guys fancy catching up again 👍
Monty Outdoors really does take it out you! Sounds good mate take it easy 👌🏻
So much beauty on your doorstep 😎☝️ lucky bugger
Only seen this one, mate. Sorry. Notifications are rubbish. This is 90 minute drive from my house... and then a 90 minute walk!
Love the fridge lol
Sadly it was not the coolest. The water was rather warm with no cold shock available! Roll on winter 😀
@@MontyOutdoors Haha, was the same in Wales was so warm, was swimming for hours
@@GeorginaMckimm Here's hoping for a few warm spells in September. Nothing better than going for a dip to cool off. Part 2 has this included - moron here filmed in portrait mode. Whereabouts in Wales or is the video up?
@@MontyOutdoors Yer that would be nice. Haha what on your camera or phone? Videos up next week, but we did a bit of coast/ Brecons and Snowdonia
@@GeorginaMckimm I use a Samsung S20 for my videos. What is it you use? I'll monitor closely and watch when it's live :)
Living the dream
Part 2 will extend on that dream 😁
@Jackson Five Deet and a fire. Thankfully I've not came across a swathe with millions of them yet. Doubt deet and a fire would do much...
RUBBISH IN THE BIN!!!
The rubbish went in the bin!
And another great video Monty. How did you find the bed? I end up taking a big blow up bed, a proper pillow & a big sleeping bag coz I love my bed. Really need to cut down. Looks so peaceful and great scenery. Your dinner looks awesome too. Looking forward to part 2
It's a Deeplee and I would thoroughly recommend it. I advised my friend to get it as well and she likes it. Like my friend, after a few uses you get used to the pillow. For a summer/early autumn/late spring sleeping mat, it is great.
Part 2 is up soon mate!
Nice. 👍
Part 2 is every bit as nice, mate! Coming soon :)
Looking forward to that. Are you going to do the sleeping bag review? Cheers 👍
@@gordonmculloch4904 At the moment, for my next video I plan on doing a review on a lot of my kit.
Monty Outdoors: 👍
Good camp Monty. Right on the shore line. Were the midges bad.
They were there and enough to be a pain if you weren't prepared, but I had deet and a fire. Saturday had an occasional breeze that kept them at breeze. They did not ruin it for me!
@@MontyOutdoors I must say our experience up at Skye was quite different. First night was gorgeous and warm with clear skies and a breeze. Next morning we woke up to humid conditions and what I can only describe as a cloud of midges. Caught us by surprise but we were reasonably prepared. The next morning was the same but I had my full body covered and put a t-shirt over my head that I could see through. Didn't bother me at all.
@@OneBiteoftheCherry My last experience in sky I was sleeping in a bivvy that also has an insect net. I woke up in the morning being attacked by midgies because I somehow opened it in my sleep. Got absolutely mauled by them and ran into my mates tent and slept beside him lol.
Which side of Loch Lomond is this? Looking to camp there tonight, thank you
It's the beach down from Rowchoish Bothy. It's a 90 minute walk south of Inversnaid.
What is Andy from Emmerdale doing wild camping!???
First time I've had that one mate 😂
Hi new friend here
Thanks for popping along, buddy :D
hi me and my girlfriend want to go there for 2 night is they somewhere safe i can park the car up thanks 👍🏽 and would love to know the location of where you was
You park for free at Inversnaid bothy, walk for 2 hours and it's down by Rowchoish bothy (you just cut through the trees down to the loch).
Monty Outdoors thanks for the reply so i can park for 2 night for free awsome looking to go in november
@@jackdonaghy5328 Well it was free when I was there and I'm sure it's free all year. There's another car park at Rowardennan and that's about a 2 hour walk. You need to pay at that one.
It's really sad that SNP has banned wild camping meanwhile promoting Tom Weir and erecting a statue of him Loch Lomond shores. More building in the last 10 years in loch lomond since the national Park than in the last 70 years in Loch Lomond. We're loosing our right to roam and people are sleep walking into it. Glad Monty is wild camping and enjoying Scotland the way it's supposed to be. Away from Loch Lomond national park profiteering.
HI James, hope you are well, mate! Where did the SNP ban wild camping? I remember a few years ago an SNP councillor suggested banning camping in certain areas, but did it ever materialise? But there is a part of me that believes we could lose our right to roam. Combination of dirty campers and greedy landowners.
@@MontyOutdoors Hi Monty labour then SNP councillors supported the national park ban www.theguardian.com/travel/2017/mar/02/lomond-wild-camping-ban-start-slippery-slope. Cameron Macneesh has a pressure group to retain our rights to wild camp and roam. Its a really sad situation
@@MontyOutdoors parkswatchscotland.co.uk/2019/11/26/response-to-scottish-parliament-petition-1751-to-create-no-wild-camp-zones-in-scotland/
Please don't be discouraged myself and other love your Videos and even with the ban I wild camp and encourage other to do so.
@@jamesblack2624 There is no ban though mate. There are temporary restrictions in parts of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs, but only to deter dirty campers. You can camp in these areas, just it costs money and spots are limited. This spot in the video was thankfully outside that zone. If there were ever a serious attempt to ban wild camping, this channel will be the first to be vocal.
Jealous much but I'm put off going anywhere because of all the posts on Facebook showing mess everywhere and angry locals. I wouldn't want to be tarred with the same brush as the louts so I won't go anywhere which is a shame.
You're no doubt a responsibile human being and it shouldn't put you off. The locals have no issue with genuine wild campers.
Sadly I do have a friend who was tarred with the same brush and that had an impact on him.
@@MontyOutdoors Exactly, that's why I won't go. I pick up other people's rubbish but they never see that.
@@countryside_guy You're a top guy, mate. I cleaned a beach the other week, but in the end, I didn't want to brag about it online. It's really expected of us.
@@MontyOutdoors I wasn't bragging? Just saying the locals don't see the good, they only see the bad in everyone.
@@countryside_guy No haha. I don't mean you were bragging. I was contemplating a video of me cleaning up after others, but in the end I considered it as a vanity move and decided against it. I'll clean up and leave it at that.
