- Giving the Durston X-Mid 1 a good seeing to! I’ve done the best I could with the audio in these conditions, hopefully it’s not too 🥴
❗ Before camping in bad weather, make sure you have the back-up gear and know-how to survive a potential tent failure

Which other tents would you like to see bad weather tested? :D 🏕
3F UL GEAR Taiji2 and OEX Bobcat 1😊
Hello Claire 👋I have seen a tent advertised here on YT that you can put up in 5 seconds. It's based on an upside-down umbrella principle. American, I think. Looks very sturdy in the demos'. Might be worth considering ? Although I'm not sure how costly -
Onetigris Stella 4 season tent
Grampian 3 man (big 2 man really) in storm, I’ve done bad weather but not storm
Dutch army 2 man tent.😀
Nice. Glad the tent worked well. Thanks for testing it out :)
- Dan
The man himself!
It's very impressive Dan! I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for darker colours in future hopefully 😍🙏 Happy 2024
@@WildBeare Thanks! Our "Solid" version is a darker green although still not that dark. I'll be moving it darker green in the spring, although it still should probably even darker yet. Maybe for 2025.
@@durstongear camo silpoly pretty please
It's not so bad in rocky country - not so blendy in thewoods though..@@WildBeare
This is the best advertisement for a tent that I’ve ever seen. This video should be on their website. We’ll done to you and Mr. Durston.
Warmly wrapped up, fed and watered watching Claire put herself through the wringer for our entertainment and education. What a gal!! Keep up the great work and keep feeling "floofy". .
You inspired me to sleep outside in a tarp and bivy setup on my father in law's land in a pine forest. The sky was very overcast until about 4 AM when the setting moon's light hit my face and woke me up. The views of the moon set over the pines and a pond I was camped next are things I will never forget - and I would not have been out there in the near freezing temperatures and rain without your inspiration!!! all the best.
I’ve had this tent in 60mph gusts (96kph) and it stood up to it. For me it’s the perfect balance of performance, liveability & weight to £'s spent available. It’s really well designed and made, common failure points (tent poles) are negated. The only negative I’ve come across (I’m nit picking now) is the large footprint sometimes can inhibit finding a good pitch - I’ll happily trade that for the interior space it offers.
I’ve had MSR and Hillebergs and whilst they are more bomb proof they are cramped and condensation pits in comparison. Unless you regularly camp above the tree line or are an extreme weather adventurer (or don’t use trekking poles) it’s incredibly difficult to justify the 2-300%+ price premium imo.
Hats off to Dan Durston, the hype is real!
Absolutely agree, I have the 2 person and loved it so much went for a 1 person xmid pro to reduce that footprint. Amazing kit
Wow that is insane!! That's the storm force wind that I want to try it in 😄
Yes I agree about the large footprint, actually the large size in general, it seems more the size of a 2P but with the sleeping area of a 1P. Part of me would like it a smidge lower to be a bit more low profile, as I'm tall in the torso and the headroom is massive. All the space for gear is amazing though of course
Some of the winds my Hille has been through I just can't imagine this not being flattened or ripped in half in them but time will tell, sounds like your experience has been great so far :D
Thanks for watching 🐻
@@WildBeare I’m beginning to think you have masochistic tendencies! In reality every tent is a compromise, I guess it’s about working out what’s most important to you, either that or become a tent collector with one for every occasion! Last count I have 8 but Durston is by far my most used, closely followed by the Big Agnes Copper Spur which is a brilliant good weather shelter. If you want to indulge your masochistic side you could try the Copper Spur in a Welsh storm! Bring pole repair sleeves and your drone to search for it in the morning 🤣
@@WildBeare I have the 2P Solid which comes in a darker colour, but even the lighter colour is surprisingly difficult to see at a distance. If you are really concerned, you could drape some of your camo net over it, but I don't think it matters, especially if you are setting up late and taking down early.
@@WildBeare Also, I roll the doors rather than gather them, and so far haven't had the wind take the magnet ... So far...
Dan Durston put tons of research and engineering into his tents. Well worth the money. It also has specific geometric angles to allow snow to always slide off and not collect. I have the same exact tent and love it! Thank you Claire, your smile always makes my day when you drop a video!
Got to love Wildbeare's enthusiasm; whatever the weather throws at her !
That's some crazy weather. I admire your passion for backpacking to be out there in that kind of weather throughout the year.
I stumbled apon your channel a few months before Christmas, and although I don't do camping or hiking, I am loving your adventures. Brilliant stuff ❤
Aw yay, thanks so much, welcome to my lil channel :D 👋 hope 2024 is treatin you nice
I’m watching this from Western Australia. 40something °C and thunderstorms off in the distance. A world away and opposite weather.
This video mentally cools me down.
That was good Wild Beare, especially sitting by the fire with a glass of Whisky...
Good lord Claire, I was biting my nails when you pulled the guy lines out! You certainly ran this through the rigors, and it held up amazing in 40+mph winds. Have a great weekend and Happy New Year! ✌️ 🌲⛺️🌲
Dan Durston put a really good pitching guide together for the xmid. So many useful tips on how to pitch correctly in all conditions 😊
Yes I think I've seen it, if it's on their website, the skinny pitch is pretty useful too :)
I've only pitched my x-mid 1 solid once, but tightening the corners as tight as a drum before putting in the poles seemed to keep everything nice and tight. Although it was nowhere near as windy and this video 😉
@@pjbell007 Yes, you need to tighten the corners well first, that is really the most important thing when pitching this tent. The pitch in this video seemed a bit loose. It should handle the wind better when it is tighter.
I'm not sure if the extra guylines in the loops in the ventilation flaps does any help. I think it would be more useful to add the extra guyline to the same loop as the original guyline. Then you could pull the two guylines to different angles and get more support for the poles to all directions.
This was perfect! I’ve long been curious about the strength of these tents but you’re the ONLY UA-camr who camps in truly strong winds and this was the best wind test on the durston xmid. Thank you so much! Hope to watch you use it a lot more.
Wow, you’re a trooper. Shooting and working in inclement weather is so challenging. I’ve worked in TV for a loooooong time and had to endure tornadoes, rainstorms, blizzards, floods, 115 degree summer temps and even been struck by lightning while in my vehicle. You handle it like a pro! Thanks for all your hard work and for sharing.
Woahh that's proper weather you've experienced! Good type 2 fun haha. Thanks, and thanks for watching my lil vid :)
I put 6 inch bungee cord loops on my guy line points on the 2 big panels before i tied my guy lines on just to give it that bit of a shock absorbing effect, its worked a treat over the past few years.....be nice to your tents Claire :)
Ohh that's a great idea thanks! I have some bungee cord, might try this, might make it a bit less 'flappy' too maybe haha. I will try ;) thanks for watching 🐻
You're welcome :) @@WildBeare
I suggested your videos to people on Quora who are suffering from mental stress and need to get away for awhile. I suggested nature as a low cost high value solution. You have such an appreciation for the simple gifts of being outside in nature. Just watching you, how you move about and deal with problems, lowers stress for us. Cheers, Cliff Wise
Still my favourite youtube camper , can't break that smile off your face no matter the trials or the weather , some girl claire beare 👏👏👏🙏
So many choices Claire, but you doing this testing is a great help for so many of us! Really impressed by this Durston X Mid ! Nice going- for many of us who are fine with the color, this is a great win! Thanks for being so supportive 🏃♀️🌿🧘🏼🙏
just get the xmid solid. it has a really nice green color
Congratulations on your nomination for best outdoor photographer for 2023!
Don't apologise for the wind on the mic -- it helps make the sensation more real for the listener. We can feel that we are there too (but I bet you're glad that we're not!). Like the shot tracking your feet as you walk along. That's different! It all adds to the high standard of production you manage whatever the weather is throwing at you. Great stuff.
A straight forward test, thanks. You have some of the most scenic landscapes a truly beautiful place rain or shine.
I love how you come to Wales for bad weather, are you trying to say something! 🤣🤣 that little tent did well really, must have been noisy! 😊👍🏽⛺️♥️
Fantastic content as usual. Never fail to make interesting videos.
The Alpkit Bigfoot footprint fits like a glove in this tent. It’s so good you’d believe it was the official footprint. And at £25 it’s a bargain. I’d definitely recommend it. And the Durston too, it’s a great tent.
Ooh really! Good to know, thank you for sharing :D
Great tip. Thank you! I just bought an X-Mid 1 solid and the groundsheet was going to be another 75 with VAT and duty. Ouch.
Evening Claire. I just wanted to say Thank you for the enjoyment your back catalogue of videos has provided me in recent weeks. My partner kindly has ordered a few simple camping presents for me, focused around taking my daughter out on Saturday mornings for breakfast in the woods. Nothing better than hot chocolate or espresso on a cold bright morning in nature. But it took 'going solo' and your videos to remind me of that fact.
Hi! Ahh that's so nice, the best quality time together, and never forgotten 💚 so glad you're enjoying my lil channel, happy new year to you and your daughter :)
You are one hell of a ballsy lady Claire . Love your video's and your cheerful come what may attitude at what nature throws at you .
Hey Claire. For such a small tent, plus being a walking poke tent, that does surprisingly well in the wind. I was expecting it to fail miserably. I’m intrigued by the yellow tent pegs. I do still love my MSR. To be fair though. I’ve not been out in bad weather with it yet. Maybe I should try it. 😂. Great video Claire. As always. Stay safe. 🏕🏕
Heyy, yeh was expecting it to fail too, it really surprised me! The yellow pegs are Delta ground anchors - they hold the guy lines down really effectively in high winds, but I didn't need them on this occasion. Thank you, hope you're good Sir!
@@WildBeare Sir?? I’ve not been knighted Clair. 😂. The one I do want to see tested in bad weather is your Poncho/tent. I feel that will be “entertaining”. 😁. I look forward to seeing that. 🏕🏕
@PaddingtonBear2213 I too was impressed with my MSR. Until it rained that is. Back it went!
@@UseUsernameNotInUse . I have the MSR NX Hubba Hubba. I have been lucky with the weather but to be honest. I have only really used it when I do a 2-3 day hike in the Lake District. So I’m also making sure I’ve got good weather predicted. Maybe I should take it for a wet run. I’ve had it years so I cannot send it back even if it does fail the rain test. 😂
@@PaddingtonBear2213 - *"Sir?? I’ve not been knighted"*
True.. but everyone knows that Paddington has taken tea with Her Majesty.. and that's kinda-sorta close to knighthood, at least!
Well tested Claire. 8 hours sleep is amazing in all that wind noise.
Claire you are one brave and tough woman!! Going out in some of the worse conditions and coming out strong!💪 That was amazing to watch under such windy weather!⛺️cool!! Good fun to watch! You had me dancin at the end!! lol 🤣 I loved it! Thank you for taking us along with you! 🚙take care!💜🥰 don’t work too hard and have a wonderful weekend!! ❤️🥰😇🙏🏼
Got my finger on the button to buy this tent. Stroke of luck that you've done this video so recently! Great to have my decision validated! Thanks!
New Sub, your so authentic and genuine! I truly enjoy your videos. Love from Canada 🎉
The little snail! 😁
Hey my lovely wild friend!!!
I didn’t want to like this tent but I do goddamit! 😂🤣😂 I completely agree 100% about the colour though but I really do like it! Thank you for testing it so we don’t have to! 😂🥰
This is my favourite Durston x mid 1p solid tent video by miles! It shows me everything I need to know. Thanks Claire 👍
thats a great test of the tent in those winds - thanks again Claire
... wow ... gutsy little tent 🌬️⛺ ... well done testing it to the max ... now looking into getting one myself ... have a healthy wealthy and fun-filled 2024 🎉 ... stay safe and well and above all keep smiling 😃
I’m impressed, what a great little tent. Small, compact, roomy, light weight, water and wind protection. Thanks for sharing, til next time…….
I think I love wild beare, beautiful, vibrant, adventurous,a special person x
Thank you for the lovely video, Claire Beare!🐻🌲.♥️ from the snowy Pacific Northwest,US!
I love the expression that "you're doing this so I don't have to.". Yep, my days of rough camping are well and truly over.
But I do enjoy the notion of "virtual camping" with you.
Best wishes.
Bloody hell - you're a magnet for bad weather! That was certainly a stiff test of the X Mid - I love mine, though haven't yet given it that sort of abuse!
Totally impressed with how well that tent did in extreme wind. After the first video had my doubts that it would do well at all. Nice one Claire, looks like you had a good time as well!
Me too, I almost feel bad for doubting it.. kinda expected it to get flattened haha! I did it was good fun. Thanks for watching :)
Pretty darn impressive how well the tent did Overnight. But then the next day hit and I'll be damn. The tent held. Impressed. Great content.
Great job as usual!
You are my savoir..
So relaxing!
StaySafe Claire!
..follow your heart..
What an excellent test: well done and it gives so much confidence to prospective purchasers of the Durston X Mid.
I’ve only had my x-mid 1P out in 25mph winds so this gives me a lot more confidence in its reliability, thanks👍
Glad it was helpful :) I can't really believe it, it's like some kind of tent sorcery 😮
Hi Claire. A good test there. I agree on the colour concern. Light grey aint it when you are hoping to blend in. I am considering a niche tent called the Nortent Vern 1 PC. It is a heavy duty single skin tent. Weighs a ton (well 3kg anyway) and is bulky as a result, but looks built like a tank and might not even wobble in the winds you just showed us. If the bulk and weight do not justify the sturdiness I was considering the standard SIL nylon version of this tent, the Nortent Vern 1.
Claire your passion for the outside world Mother Nature is truly inspiring.
And it’s wonderful to see ✌️🙏
In this crazy world we are living in at the moment you show us how we can find happiness in my Mother Nature’s company ✌️💙🙏
Here in Florida when I'm not hammock camping and when camping in a tent. I always use a ground cloth ( I used the 3m (3.2 yards ) of Tyvek 43gsm 1443R Kite Making Material , Durable , Strong , Lightweight and Breathable from Amazon. It's softer and quieter than the Tyvek used in home building. ) It's trimmed to fit inside ( about 2 inches ) the drip line of the X-Mid 1 sides. Shinny side down soft side up , have to use a ground cloth since the ground is always moist.
Cuddled up in the wind and rain, nice. 🙂
Thank you for the video.
Another awesome test, nice one Claire!
Thank you so much for testing. I hate wasting money and finding out at the wrong time that a product is failing. You're the Best! Much respect from your friends in Florida! 🌴
I love this tent, I had a night on Helvellyn on 11th December, I thought I would have to bail as the wind was so strong, but this tent held up like a boss, so impressed.
You have come up with the perfect formula for your videos. All of them. Congratulations, I am a huge fan.
No Leaks, Definitely Passed my. Test. Thanks for making this Video. Cheers From South Carolina.
Claire, you are an amazing person
Thanks, as always, Claire!
That stood up well, every tried the NatureHike Nebula2. Have had it a few years and used up in Cairngorms in moderate weather in September.
Now that's what I call a proper bad weather test right there Claire! That X-Mid really handled those strong winds like a champ 👍 I love how you even released the guylines on it just to see what it could really take. Now that's going above and beyond! I think it's safe to say that this tent will serve you very well on many an adventure to come. And of course, I'll be looking forward to seeing you out there in it having the time of your life 😊 Now if we can just get Dan to release a special "WildBeare Version" in stealth camo for ya 😉
I hope that you have an absolutely amazing weekend my friend!
Stay wild.... 🐻 And much love.... 💚 -John
I recently set up in and went through a night of downpour in my Durstan X-mid 1 pro. I had water get in due to two issues. The water came in from splash back. There were two reason, one was my fault, the other, not so much. After I did the initial pitch I should have went around the tent and tightened the corners a bit more to tightened up the long sides. The other issue had to do with the pole sinking into the ground because it was saturated with water which contributed to the long side collapsing in even more and allowing the splash up. Lesson learned for next time. Great vid.
Hi Claire! I'm a camping/outdoors guy. I watch different reputable outdoors people, and the equipment they use. My trail camera broke last Fall, so I needed a new one. I saw that you use the GardePro A3 camera. Decided to get one myself. This is a wonderful trail cam! Easy to operate, great photos and video. I'm very happy with it. Thanks for sharing your adventures, and listing your equipment. Take care and be safe out there! I'll be tuned in!😊
That was so much fun ….”wildBeare”….❤
Really excellent review. I like the attention to detail, measuring wind speed and temp as well as with/without lines pegs etc. I watch quite a few reviewers and this is up there with the best. Not too long either. (Must be my OCD lol) well done
I love not only watching these but also thinking about the production of this content. Incredible.
PS. You do camping so that I don't have to. Endure24 for 2 days is my limit😂
Thank you so much :D I'm a photographer by trade so morphing that into videography and filming my hobby is a joy for me 💚
Great video! I think I'll add this tent to my wishlist for future videos.
It's a great wee tent. So glad I bought mine. And I love the bulldog clip tip for holding the door open!
I have the X- Mid1 Solid. Much better, it’s dark green. It blends in and it’s a bit better quality for stormy conditions… wasn’t that much more expensive. I use with the ground sheet for that extra protection. It’s performed well, no issues at all. Perfect for multi day hiking when you want the “lighter tent” kit. I’ve used it in high winds, hail at one point in Tasmania, Australia known for harsh conditions and hiking in New Zealand it’s a fantastic tent.
I was going to suggest the solid too
@@steveround315 I’m happy I reached out to Dan and asked the question the best one to go with as I was deciding between the two. I’m very happy with my purchase, they are not cheap. I live in australia as well so the conversion to AUD made me a little sad. Bit it was so worth it, fabulous tent
Just ordered this beast of a tent 2 days ago. Possibly gonna be my go to….😊 Thanks for sharing the video…
Just bought the X-Mid Pro 2+, going to take it out for a test in the interior of BC next week, hopefully won't rain that much but will be interesting if it does, to see how it holds up. Something that does help even more is pointing the thin end of the tent, or nose, into the wind. Anyway, can't wait!! Great vid!
Having so much fun watching you having so much fun checking out all the tents that could withstand a gal force wind and rain. The places you put yourself in is amazing and very interesting. You are one most fantastic young lady. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful dry day with no wind.
Nice normal camping weather…Have fun stay safe.
Great stuff you do! I especially love, how you tried to get your tent collapsed… that’s some quality content!!
That tent ⛺️ did great holding up😊 great sharing
I thoroughly enjoy your videos, and you. And am constantly amazed at your persistence in what appears to be more rainy/windy conditions than not. Bravissima!
I do like a little bit of jeopardy with my equipment testing videos. This was perfect from that perspective. Great idea! Love the concept.
I'm impresssed by the tent and also by your fair test! Thanks for the thoroughness. The binder clip to hold the door open is smart!
wow i'm impressed by this tent
I can't think of a better test for a tent than what you just showed. You won me over, I'm getting an X-Mid.
I can't think of a better way to actually test a tent, in these conditions. What a testament to the quality you've been able to find in this pack-tent. Good on you for going the extra for this test. Loved it.
Glad you are safe....
At the moment I'm more into camping, and therefore I didn’t need trekking poles yet.
But I’m very very interested in hiking. Seeing this tent in such weather really is pretty impressive. Thank you for your review in such conditions!
Always impressed by your enthusiasm even under the worst conditions! Loved the shot of the kestrel riding the wind at 5:55.
thank you for creating these videos always the best distraction on bad days
Great review! I crack up watching your UA-cam posts. You always seem to find the most inclement weather to be out and about in.
So let’s see, the forecast is for weather that most people would be nice and comfortable in their homes, but not Claire, Claire grabs her backpack, tent and other gear for another adventure in the wild. Makes me wonder why anyone would want to live over there…
But your exuberance always puts a smile on my face. Hardly anything puts a damper on our Claire! I look forward to watching your continuing adventures Claire, they never fail to entertain. 🍻😁
Awe, the sacrifices you make for your viewers is absolutely astonishing. You are literally puting yourself in harms way with adverse weather conditions and all. You deserve a medal for that alone. Keep up the fantastic work. Much love and light. Paul. 🥰😇
I had visions of you hangliding down the valley if the tent had come loose. great videos Claire, stay safe. 🪂
Words cannot describe how bold Claire is in her presentations ❤
Been waiting for someone to test this in a bit of weather, so I was really pleased you did this. Only down side seems to be the magnets.
Excellent review, leave it to you to find the worst weather. Thank you Claire, stay safe ❤🇺🇸
I liked your camping.🏕️
I enjoy camping in Japan, too.🇯🇵
Your video gave me a hint!
I appreciate splendid camping.☺️
I love that you are so willing to put gear to the test in such challenging conditions so we don"t have to. Thanks and cheers!
It's nice to know what the gear will stand when the inevitable _does_ happen and you _do_ have to.
I love my X-Mid as well. Great tents!
Awesome test. I have used the x mid 1 for occasional hikes, have been really impressed.
The falcon hunting in background 😂
I use Binder Clips all the time when I'm camping/Hiking! Its crazy how useful an office supply can be helpful out of the office 😁
Great wind test! Thanks for enduring the sufferfest and adventure!
Loved it Eddie, my other half hopes one day she will see her ship building ancestors on your feed. Look forward to your next one
Well done Claire, another beautiful and impressive video in quite appalling weather conditions. You are a girl after my own heart.
Stay safe and warm and keep up the good work.
Along with many, many other people who love the outdoors your videos are very keenly anticipated and loved.❤
Ahh thanks so much, hope 2024 is a great one for you so far 💚
