  • Cast announced for Shane Meadows’ new BBC drama The Gallows Pole
A stellar cast has been assembled, and production is now underway, on writer and director Shane Meadows’ first period television drama, The Gallows Pole
The link below is to my previous vlog on the subject and also to the book The Gallows Pole:
    • The Gallows Pole Rise ...

Putting this cast together has been an absolute joy. We went on an open-casting odyssey, watching over 6,500 self-tapes from unrepresented actors and actresses, and went from hoping to find one or two new faces to making up half of the entire cast from those tapes. This is the 18th century yes, but viewed through a slightly more anarchic lens."
    - Shane Meadows
Starring in the highly anticipated series will be:
Michael Socha (This Is England, Papillon)
Thomas Turgoose (This Is England, Looted)
    George MacKay (1917, Captain Fantastic)
    Tom Burke (Mank, The Souvenir)
    Sophie McShera (Cinderella, Downton Abbey)
    Cara Theobold (Downton Abbey, Crazyhead)
    Yusra Warsama (Castle Rock)
    Eve Burley (Secret State)
    Nicole Barber Lane (Hollyoaks)
    Samuel Edward-Cook (Peaky Blinders)
    Anthony Welsh (Master Of None)
    Joe Sproulle (The A Word)
    Adam Fogerty (Legend)
Fine Time Fontayne (How We Used To Live)
...and an ensemble of first-time actors.
The Gallows Pole, based on the novel of the same name by Benjamin Myers, fictionalises the remarkable true story of the rise and fall of David Hartley and the Cragg Vale Coiners. Set against the backdrop of the coming industrial revolution in 18th century Yorkshire, the compelling drama follows the enigmatic David Hartley, played by Michael Socha, as he assembles a gang of weavers and land-workers to embark upon a revolutionary criminal enterprise that will capsize the economy and become the biggest fraud in British history.
It was also announced that A24 are teaming up with Element Pictures (The Favourite, Normal People) on the six-part series for the BBC which is currently filming in Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire.
Collaborating again with casting director Shaheen Baig (The Virtues), Shane Meadows says of his cast: “Putting this cast together, with the undying support of Shaheen Baig and her amazing team, has been an absolute joy. To be working with actors I’ve grown up with and/or have been desperate to work with, alongside oodles of incredible ‘as yet’ undiscovered Yorkshire-based talent, is an absolute honour and I’ve not been this passionate about shooting a project in years!
"After some initial rehearsals back in spring, me and the team went on an open-casting odyssey, watching over 6,500 self-tapes from unrepresented actors and actresses, and were blown away by the quality of tapes that were submitted. We went from hoping to find one or two new faces, to making up half of the entire cast from those tapes and I believe it’s going to create a series quite unlike anything else I’ve ever worked on.
"This is the 18th century yes, but viewed through a slightly more anarchic lens and will - like my previous work - have a soundtrack that fits the mood like a psychedelic glove, rather than historical expectations.”
Piers Wenger, Director of BBC Drama, adds: “Shane’s talent for spotting and working with the newest and most authentic talent is second to none and will play a key role in setting this drama apart. It’s an honour to be working with Shane, our friends at Element, and our partners at A24, to see this amazing story start to come to life.”
Element Pictures adds: “Working with the BBC and A24 on Shane Meadows’ first period drama is incredibly exciting for all of us at Element. Shane’s unique take on the story combined with the stunning cast he has assembled will make for an intoxicating and unforgettable series.”
The Gallows Pole was commissioned by Piers Wenger, Director of BBC Drama, and is produced by Element Pictures in association with Big Arty for the BBC in association with A24. Nickie Sault, a long-time collaborator of Shane Meadows, will also be a producer on the show. International sales will be handled by A24.

Lovely video, Robert. I really enjoy when you show those panoramic views - I live in Suffolk - beautiful, but as flat as a pancake. I lived in Ripon for a year, and loved the landscape all around there, and miss that life a great deal, so I appreciate your shots of moorland, and hills and crags immensely. Thank you.

Thank you for the video, nice to see some Gallows Pole enthusiasm. You sounded very excited which is really cool :) Tips for you that might come in handy. Try to start with a concise but brief introduction of exactly what your vlog is about, for example you didn't mention Benjamin Myers once, or the producers. You spoke very briefly about ''shaving gold coins'' but I think the book deserves a bit more than that ;) During your vlog you repeat yourself several times and use a lot of pointless, filler words including ''I told you so''. Less of those and nobody likes I told you so. Important, interesting info only and concise! For god's sake talk about 'King' David Hartley...You, on occasion begin to go into character, talking about the weather and the seasons but cut yourself off...well...firstly don't cut yourself off and GOOD, let yourself go and be confident about it. Finish what you start and don't get shy and cut yourself short, let it all out and let us in to YOUR point of view. Or don't bother at all. Content is more or less unedited which is nice, more organic. But there is nothing wrong with having something prepared and giving it a few takes before editing. Whatever works in the moment. Couple of big 'dont's'...NEVER show someone's home or give any ideas about location. It can be devastating for the owners (tourists, privacy) and potentially dangerous mentally/socially/physically etc depending on a number of factors. In addition to that, the gallows pole is mysterious, I personally don't want to know exactly where he lived, I have a picture in my mind that was set from the book. Undoubtedly the TV series will draw attraction to the area but no need to add to that. Tourists can mean well but their very presence is controversial to that. Lastly, I noticed you, in third person discussed being allowed on the set. Yea don't do that. Instead work on your content and one day you might get invited on set. P.S. stop talking about cameras and 1080p.

@@RobertJohnKerrUK Roaster here! No no, this was absolutely not intended as a roasting. It was purely because I like that you are interested in promoting B. Myers' story (I'm a big Myers fan and he deserves it) and I figured, you could improve your vlog since the only changes you need to make are the easy bits! This means, the hard bit is developing a legitimate passion which (I think, I hope) you have done. Most vid's/vlogs these days are manufactured in laboratories based on accumulated data whereas yours is genuine and I like that! Be yourself more and don't be shy :)

I really enjoyed the 1st 2 but the 3rd I was disappointed, it's like it was rushed and they ran out of filming time, would have been good to see David and graces relationship blossom and more of how life was like for them all after,, hoping a second series is is the pipeline

I have only just realized that it has finished…. Just the three episodes…. Can’t believe it…. Really disappointed…. They definitely ran out of money…. Annoying that they still thought it a good idea to televise the three …. What a let down…. Thanks all for your comments on this I really appreciate it…. 👍👍👍
