Mytholmroyd is pronounced My-thum-royd, with a hard "th" as in "the" not as in "myth". David Hartley (AKA "King" David, not David "king" Hartley) along with two accomplices was hung in York and their bodies brought back to Halifax, where they were hung in chains on Beacon Hill, where you can still see the earthwork platform constructed specially for the gallows.
Incidentally, when someone was hung in chains their bodies were tarred to prevent or at least restrict decomposition, so they could hang in public view for longer.
David Hartley's body was later taken to Heptonstall and buried close to the (now ruined) church of St. Thomas a' Beckett. It's signposted, for anyone who's interested.
Two churches one site the ruins of the old one is a must see !!
A great, Informative intro to the Coiners. Thanks for sticking to history and reminding us David Hartley and gang were violent, ruthless criminals, not Robin Hood and his merry men, as in fiction and TV. I’m actually very impressed so far with the BBC series but Shane Meadows is consciously creating a sympathetic account from their point of view. Perfectly fine dramatic approach, but it’s important to be reminded of the facts.

A fascinating story, short but covered all the angles, and yes, a better effort than that awful BBC drama! I managed 20 minutes before turning it off, think it was heavily influenced by Monty Python’s ‘Four Yorkshiremen’ sketch, I gave up when that lad was slapped for chewing on a piece of what appeared to be damp cardboard, “you eating again? That’s to last us until next week”. LOL! Disappointed you didn’t mention the ‘Antler Men’… who the hell were they supposed to be🤔
Has Cleckhuddersfax changed since those heady days of promise. I do not think I have seen a fresh video from yourself recently so good to see you back. As a coin collector I find these coiners most reprehensible.
I would think finding a coin _they_ clipped or counterfeited would be an unusual item to add to the collection. Of course, the provenance might be difficult to obtain...
@@thatguyinelnorte They would be antiquities so not my field of interest. I have seen a number of coins of past periods and always wondered how to be certain of their provenance. Hence modern numismatics are my interest. Antiquities generally look clipped anyway, possibly just worn.

Welcome back and that was great!! There was a lot that was new to me. I never knew folks were transported to Africa, for example, nor that it was Sir Isaac that designed the ridges. I love English village names, having read so many mysteries by great English authors, so learning a couple real ones was an added bonus.

Very good stuff. My neck of the woods! Deighton’s murderers were hanged for robbery after being acquitted of murder. Their bodies were hung in chains on Beacon Hill above Halifax as a warning to others. Issac Hartley did die of natural causes, although 19th century Antiquarian’s who interviewed witnesses said he died in agony, writhing around, cursing God and begging for death.
If you’ve not already read it, Clip a Bright Guinea by John Marsh is an amazingly researched book on the coiners. Keep up the great work!
My Grandad always said Isaac died of a Cancer. Not sure how true that is but possibly something that was passed down through the family.
Very true about Clip a Bright Guinea by John Marsh, which tells the tale well, but as a fictional writer there are some elements of Marsh's book which are not strictly accurate. I've written my own book and found a huge amount of archive material that Marsh and Ling Roth before him didn't have access to that give a much more detailed account of the coiners gang. All I need to do now is find someone willing to publish it!!

Americans call the 7 year war the french and indian war, for those where the battles , french colonialist and tribesman attacked British colonies and territories. And it was due to the deficit from this war that led to greater taxation and to the American Revolution
Have you read Gold Pieces by Phyllis Bentley ? A fictionalised account of these events for children which works in John Kay, inventor of the flying shuttle for good measure but an entertaining read nonetheless.
My gran just got the Gallows Pole book, and to be honestly I thought it sounded a bit naff. I thought she only liked it because she was brought up between Mytholmroyd and Hebden bridge! After watching this I’m quite fascinated tho! I’ll have to have a read!

I switched this off after a couple of minutes. Why? Well, if you're going to make a video about a place the very first thing you should do is learn how to pronounce the names of the towns and villages! Especially if you're not native to the area. It's a form of respect, isn't it?
