The ending they used does really work better. Jesper found a place he belongs, he and Alva found happiness together. And Klaus was reunited with his wife. Not only that, but it feels extra magical that Klaus somehow became “Santa” from beyond the grave. It goes to show how dedicated the storytellers were that they already had an ending they were satisfied with, but they knew it just wasn’t quite perfect. This movie really deserved an Oscar.

I like some of the ideas presented here, like Klaus' final letter to Jesper and how the latter travelled with Alva to the North Pole to reunite with Klaus, but the overall purpose of it would've been a little confusing. The final ending worked much better to show Jesper's development by remaining in Smeerenburg with his own business and new family. Plus, it's comforting just having him wait in the living room to see his old friend again, thus still maintaining the semi-realistic interpretation of the Santa Claus lore.

This ending would've confused me too, since how could they find Klaus if he had ascended to a higher/magical plane of existence, unless they too crossed over sometime during their travel. Is the North Pole the afterlife now? I would definitely start messing up the symbolism.
It was nice to see more of the townsfolk, but the ending they went with keeps the mystery about Klaus' exact state of being, which I like.
Meh, I think you're overthinking it. It could easily be that he was just calling Jasper to a higher calling to help Klaus with his cause. I don't get how people are combining "death" into this ending when it's not mentioned or shown at all.

@@Yoursoul101 Yes, I would say it's similar to Frodo going to the Undying Lands at the end of The Lord of the Rings. Is that supposed to represent death? Or is it just another state of being beyond human understanding? Although it could be a metaphor for death, Frodo doesn't die, he leaves. The deleted ending seems to work on that level at least for me. But at the end, I am still happy with the final product and I am glad to see this deleted scene.

Oddly specific
I seriously hope this guy gets to make more movies. He appears to understand that the structure of the story is important and what would make more sense logically for the story’s progression rather than just trying to get an emotional pay off without putting in the effort - something A LOT of movies have been doing lately.
The ending chosen in the final film works best for me because it leaves the mystery opened. We wonder, is Klaus really still alive, or is Jesper just feeding the fable that we all know? To me that's much more powerful, because it makes me feel the way I did when I was told that Santa was real. A part of us knows it's just a story, but another part wants to believe.
Agreed. for all we know, Klaus is truly gone. No magic whatsoever. But it was Jesper who kept the magic of Klaus's generosity alit and thus what became the foundation of Santa.
They definitely made the right decision here. I like the ambiguity and magic of the ending we have. When you hear the sleigh bells and Jesper looks to the roof it's perfect. Just goes to prove that less is more works if you're smart. Great film and have finally got the making of book for Christmas.
That other ending feels so off, I really prefer the actual ending
Especially the way it is maybe if the letter says "To continue to send letters to the cottage and I'll see you my friend "
I actually prefer the ended we got, there is more closure, it retains the magic of Christmas, and I might have teared up at that last line. The only element I could have kept from the scrapped ending was Jesper getting the letter.
I much prefer the other ending. Both are sweet in their own way, but the original makes more sense with how the story was built. Jesper, when given the chance to leave Smeerensberg, asked his Father to allow him to stay, as he had found contentment, friendship and a place among the townspeople and, through his(and Klaus's)actions, had ended a family feud that had stretched back HUNDREDS of years.
The ending with Jesper saying goodnight to his kids and waiting for Klaus to return to see him makes me tear up every time.
Yea that north pole ending is great but i think it’s too deep for children who watched it.Jesper with family??? Boi it’s so beautiful and easier to understand. They made a right choice here.
I agree. The point of Jesper not returning with his father, despite completing his near impossible task, was that he had found contentment, happiness, along with friendship and family and had grown beyond the materialistic man he once was.
I think the only part of this alternate ending that could fit in the actual ending and would have brought it full circle, is that letter. The letters were main the elements to this movie.
It would only say that he's doing well but his work has only begun.
Jesper would read it in front of the fireplace, and be puzzled by a riddled final sentence in the letter. " When you hear my call, I'll be there my friend" or something along those lines.
And then you hear the bells, and use the same final shot.
Idk that's just an idea though. I'm just so interested in this movie and what it achieved! Can't wait to see more projects from you guys!

You know how the Rankin & Bass special Santa Claus is Coming to Town starts with the mailman bringing letters to the North Pole, and saying he has a lot of work that time of year because of all the letters to Santa? He then proceeds to tell the story of Santa’s origin and answers all the questions kids asked in their letters
Perhaps an allusion to that would’ve been a good ending. At least the basic idea of him having a lot of work to do bringing all the letters to the North Pole. I do like the idea of Jesper getting a letter from Klaus and then hearing sleigh bells. Maybe the letter could be about that?
Jesper running to Klaus faster just to give his old friend a hug would've broken me instantly just like the canon ending

For me, this ending feels odd because of the pacing. Jesper & Alva grow old in Smeerensburg, but then they suddenly go on this huge epic journey at the very last minute... It definitely made more sense to steadily ease down to a calm, cozy ending for the final movie. Of course this scene is so cool to see though; thanks so much for this material and all the insights!

Yeah I like the ending they decided on, for Alva and Jesper to make a whole life for themselves in Smeerensberg and even for Alva to say you would be crazy to leave this town now earlier in the movie, for them to just leave at the end, it just doesnt make sense. I think the letter part couldve connected with him just reading the letter every year as he sits in front of the fireplace waiting for klaus. But I like that he kind of fades away and becomes santa in the same way that his wife became the wind that guided him throughout the movie. It was ambiguous but satisfying that he could see him every year and he didnt ever die really. They started the presents together and klaus kept it up even after they couldnt be together
I appreciate writers taking their time with their story and listening to criticism positively while still maintaining the heart of the story they were going for. If only more writers cared rather than being selfish and just going for a message while sacrificing the narrative.

Both this endings touched me more than the ending of "Toy Story 4" did.

I feel like this ending would've made it too magical for what this movie is, but I still like this ending.
Honestly I cried watching this movie 5 times and had to stop it two times because I could not see anything anymore. Pure, honest emotions and beauty. Thats what we need in this world!
Only a few movies let alone animated ones, that can make my knees weak after watching. No sadness, but no joy either. It's just a feeling of unexplainable calmness. Like peace if it were ever a thing. The ending is so perfect that i dont want it to end, but in a way it has to. The character found places of their own the way they needed them to be. It doesnt end on a high note. But rather a perfect one.
Still a good ending, but didn't really leave that sense of closure unlike the one we got. Klaus gets to be with his wife, Jesper ends up settling in the town he once was so eager to leave, and it cements the whole "Christmas Spirit " thing.
I would have cried either way. Love the ending as it stands and easily one of the best animated movies ever made.

I’ve always “cried” at movies and tv shows. But they never really brought me tears. This was the first film that broke me
I prefer the ending we got. I liked the magic and mystery. And there was just something comforting about seeing Jester and his little family living in a quaint and happy town.
AWW Man...I swear I'll never ever get tried of these deleted, behind the scenes moments or extra storytelling parts that were cut for time or just wasn't working for this lovely amazing movie. Please never stop showcasing all of the hard incredible work you animators, writers, and artists did along with the unfortunate but very understandable having to scrap away certain awesome ideas also concepts that didn't overall fit with the final last product. But still such amazing work also artsy that was put into this animated movie.
As an artist, it's kind of reassuring to hear that it can be a grueling process, and that you get attached to certain stories, certain sequences, and character designs, and that even if you find something better it's hard to let go. I thought that it was something you weren't supposed to feel, but it's nice to know that even professionals go through this kind of issue.

Deserved far more praise and recognition than it got. Will undoubtedly become a classic and a yearly staple up there with all the greats. A true accomplishment. I’m mad I waited so long.

I like both endings but the finished peice was really good. Klaus will be one of my favorite Christmas movies for year and I hope to see more amazing animation from this team.
Sergio and Edgar, you have no idea how big of an impact this movie had on me. Such a great story with a powerful message. Definitely my go-to Christmas movie now.

I suppose a way to incorporate everything would be Jesper getting a letter, going to Ava & Jesper writing back to Klaus that he can’t leave with it being his home & Klaus sending a 2nd letter, which then leads to Jesper meeting him like in the film every year.
Both endings are good, but I think the one that made it to the final cut makes a bit more sense & ties everything together better.
You have brought back that traditional drawings magic back thank you for that and i hope you make more and more movies like this and more and more supports this

I quite like that alternative ending though, a lot of people saying that "jesper wouldnt have found his home or place" but I don't think the movie was really about that was it? It was about the inception of Klaus and their relationship together and with the people of the town. So I think it would have been another great ending.
No I disagree the movie wants you to think it’s about the inception of Santa klaus but in reality the movie is about Jesper
I like the final ending more, but in the alternate ending I kinda like that we see that Mogens did kinda like Jesper

For a second here I thought that Jesper and Alva would be the ones to become Mr. and Mrs. Claus.
I actually wish there was a plotwist were klaus dies and he becomes the "wind" and guys his friend to become santa klaus and he got his name in honor of his friend but guess that due to the name he couldn't become so it's a better ending
Just saw this on Christmas eve 2020 with my family. Beautiful and so emotional film. I can't stress enough how perfect the ending was , bittersweet but not sad, and kept the connection between the grounded story and the magical myth.
Klaus is a visual masterpiece. everything about this animation is brilliant. you guys are amazing.

This is the most interesting segment on Klaus I've seen on this channel so far! Animation progress shots, behind-the-scenes, character designs, and such are cool, and I especially love retrospectives on story decisions and thought processes during planning.

yeah the final ending is heartwarming, a bit sad, but it just shows the friendship of klaus and jesper. it also ties in neatly to the show, showing what might have been the origin of santa claus. jesper is the one who started it, so it's good that we saw that til the end :)

I put this movie on on a whim - to fill the void between Christmas movie marathons and not expecting much more. As soon as it started, I was captivated by the uniqueness of the art style. By the time Jesper got to Smeerensburg I was in STITCHES. And by the end I was bawling like a baby. This movie hit on so many beautiful, wonderful, magical levels and it has become an INSTANT classic in our home. Mum and I watch it every year (often multiple times) and I cannot wait to share it with any future children that may come along.
What you have created here is something truly special. The story is timeless, and the animation is up there with Spider-Verse and Puss in Boots (Last Wish).
Thank you so, so much for this adventure. And I am so glad you went with the ending you chose.

OHHHHHHH, this my most favourite movie ever and everytime a new video delves behind the scenes i become so entranced!! as much as i teared up when jesper and klaus hugged in the alternate ending, the symbolism /is/ confusing-- i immediately jumped to the conclusion him and alva died too LOL. but gosh, this is such a wonderful, perfect movie and seeing the blood, sweat and tears being put into it makes it even better. this was so neat to see!!
I remember as I was watching the movie for the first time I was wishing they’d just ended it after the first Christmas Eve. I thought the implication that Klaus had died or been in any other way separated from Jesper and Alva was unnecessarily sad. Then when I realized Klaus had become the full on Santa Clause we know from our childhoods, I remembered: oh yeah, this is a kid’s movie!
Although it’s still somewhat sad that Jesper only sees Klaus one night a year, you can’t have a family movie that implies Santa isn’t real. It should be jarring that the entire movie up to this point is basically a “what if Santa actually existed?” with no magic in the plot at all. Then suddenly out of nowhere something magical happens in the last 5 minutes and Klaus becomes traditional Santa, flying reindeer and all. But surprisingly it works fairly well. My adult self would still probably prefer it ended without that, but the important thing is that it doesn’t ruin it for children. Getting to believe in Santa is one of the greatest joys of being a kid.
While this original ending is clearly an attempt at the same thing, it just doesn’t work as well. It’s hard to say exactly why. One of the things that helps the version in the final ending is that Jesper doesn’t know how it happened and neither do we. Jesper, and by extension the audience, just accept that something amazing happened offscreen. The mysteriousness makes it even more beautiful.
It also doesn’t show you Klaus as Santa; you just hear sleigh bells and put the pieces together yourself. Something about that just adds to the feeling of mysterious awe.
But the original version lacks that mystery. Jesper knows exactly what happened; we’re the one’s left confused. It still does the job of making sure that kids can still believe in Santa, but it still has the downside of suddenly changing out of nowhere. The difference, is to me it doesn’t have that same magical awe that the final film version has.
I also like that the final version implies he reunited with Lydia and she became Mrs. Claus, something I don’t really see in the original ending?

I like this other ending, just like I love the ending that ended up being the actual Klaus ending. I especially loved the Klaus in this other ending got the last word in the ending, since he is the title character, and basically Santa Claus.

I’m still thinking about this movie and I saw it in early November. I don’t think I’ll ever stop thinking about it. This is my gold standard when it comes to animated movies now. 🥺

I think they made the right decition for choosing more realistic ending to this story.
To show that Klaus is no one but only a kind heart man who delicate the part of his life spreading love and joy to all they children he can reach.
And his death is a normal inescapable part of life. But it's not the end, he live through the tradition people continue even after he's gone. And for that, he lives forever.
A perfect ending for me.
I love many of the ideas in the 'other ending', but the one in the film works beautifully without being confusing. If any of you can make it through the 'I get to see my friend' line without crying, you are a stronger person than I. 😭

Seems like a better premise for a sequel as opposed to an ending! One can always dream.
I really love them talking about the symbolism of the other ending because it tied in so much with how I feel cutting things out from my stories, and how they were able to so succinctly name both the pros and the cons. Cool video, extraordinary movie. :)
It's a testiment to the heart of the story that either ending is beautiful. But I think the final ending solidified the magic of Santa. It's a beautiful legend.

This ending was very beautiful and sweet too but I like the ending where Kasper and Alva have a son and daughter of their own and that every year on Christmas Eve, he stays up to see his friend.
I'm so glad they put the work in to reach the final ending. This is interesting, but not as strong--yet it had the bones of the ending that was needed.
