  • A new version of Samyang's classic 14mm lens - same optics, different build quality. Is it money for old rope, or are the improvements really worth it? Let's find out. With thanks to Samyang for providing a sample lens for testing.

Samyang could really broaden the appeal of its manual focus lenses with electronic communication to the body. A lot of the newer mirrorless bodies have amazing MF assist tools.

Bodies would do well to allow those features without requiring a lens attached. Annoying.

@@TheMetalButcher I do not know how other brands, but Olympus for instance allows to choose or dial in focal length so IBIS can compensate for that. Still you get no EXIF and without chip or other kind of identitfication on the lens, there is no way to do it body-side only.

Yeah I absolutely agree with you, that would make the Samyan lenes even more appealing. It is a kind of annoying, that they offer this feature for the Canon and Nikon version but not for the Sony version.

I may be wrong, but don't think Chris reviews Nikkor glass. Nothing against the brand, he is just so time-challenged. This channel, which has really grown in viewer numbers, has permitted him ( I gather via Patreon contributions) to purchase a new Sony A:? body. He does test Canon lens, but not heavily in favour of other brands.

I know some people who use this lens on aps-c cameras. Its not bad actually - still noticable wider than standart zooms, and less problems with vignetting and distorsion.

The Screwtape Letters is shockingly captivating to read or listen to as an audiobook. Thanks for reviewing this "new" version of this lens! I'm somewhat disappointed that it's not available in K-Mount, but it doesn't seem that much different from the Mark 1.

Again, at f22 the image takes on a softer look but we can resolve more of the fine lines so resolution is still going up after f11. A softer look can be fixed in digital darkroom so I think it important to mention the higher resolution.

Hey Chris, some months ago you told me that a review of the Tokina 14-20mm F2 was coming soon, I just wanted to know in what time you will post it because I want that lens so bad but firstly I want to see a proper review made by you haha.

    • @christopherfrost

I'm running a bit behind on that one. I can tell you now that its quite a typical Tokina lens in its build quality and autofocus (like the 11-16mm). At 14mm it's quite sharp though, even at f/2, so I actually found its optical performance quite pleasing. Hope that helps! Chris

Samyang is a weird company. One the one hand they put out gems like the 135mm f/2, the XP 85mm f/1.2 & the 85mm f/1.8 and on the other they keep re-hashing this 14mm f/2.8 with its infamous mustache distortion.

Thanks for the review! It says on the Samyang website that this lens exceeds the image quality of the original 14mm F2.8, so I'm guessing the image quality is equal to the newer AF 14mm F2.8 lenses? I'm wondering whether it's worth upgrading from the original, I do love this lens and the weather sealing, better build quality and extra features are a great bonus.

Hmm so you didn't notice any weird wavy distortion I read a review of the original 14mm f2.8 lens on Ephotozine and it showed awful wavy distortion that was said to be impossible to correct due to the distortion literally being like a wave from side to side kind of looking the shape of a sinewave.

I'm looking for a Wide angle for my A7ii.. i Need It for interior photos, and travel ( mostly hiking). I'm wondering to buy this Lens ( It would be perfect due to the weather sealing), the Samyang 14mm AF ( I don't Need AF, but it's smaller and lighter) and the Samyang 18mm AF.. what do you suggest me? Does this Lens really too big on an A7II for hiking ( I Will use It in combination with a 24-70, or a 40mm)?
