Civilization V Leader | Dido of Carthage
Вставка

- It is difficult to judge a legendary figure such as Dido (c. 800 BC), for her achievement in the founding of mighty Carthage still remains steeped in myth and mystery. Despite the lore surrounding her life, Dido's reputation as a cunning leader lives on in history and her tale continues to garner interest to this day.

I love her dress and the language is kind of interesting. It's also kind of good that she's a backstabber because her war theme is awesome.
+lolarobin Her language is the twin sister of Hebrew. It was alive and well right up until the fifth century AD. Ironically her voice actor is speaking with an Israeli Accent.
@@272arshan That definitely was not an Israeli accent. Besides the pronunciation of Resh, shes is speaking much more “blocky” and less smooth sounding if that makes sense. If you spoke Hebrew like that in Israel or to any other Jews around the world, they would probably be confused as to why you sound like that unless your a beginner reading from a book.
DILDO
This here is my dilemma, Dido just seems so adorable that I can't bear to kill her.
Except that I always play as Rome... You can't just ignore a rivalry like Rome and Carthage.
Same
So as it turns out, Dido has a night sky in her background, and is dressed in white robes, because in Roman legend she was associated with a protective moon goddess. Dido's music is also based on a hymn about a moon goddess. In Shakespeare's the Merchant of Venice, Dido is said to have waited for her lover (Aeneas) on the sea shore at night, "waving a willow branch" or some such.
As for the roses, they are an allusion to her (ultimately tragic) love for Aeneas. Kinda cool!
She is speaking Phoenician. It's weird that I understood some of the things she said because I'm a native Arabic speaker who happens to know Hebrew as well,. (Both Semitic languages).
Himura Kenshin nobody nows how sounds Phoenician. :) its just a joke. Take it easy,.
they call themselves cnnaniets
the pronunciation though oof
missing a lot of guttural letter to the point that it sounds more like modern hebrew with a french accent than an ancient semetic language
Yes.... because Phoenician are "lebanese"
Phoenician language translated to English for she said:
My tea's gone cold, I'm wondering why I got outta bed at all
The morning rain clouds up my window and I can't see at all
And even if I could it'll all be gray but your picture on my wall
It reminds me, that it's not so bad, it's not so bad
What is that nonesense?

This person speaks Finiki like a Gringo
Dido and Eminem very funny loool
shit I had a chuckle at that
Whenever Dido is in my game, I always turn into a total footstool for her. I give her whatever she demands without asking: GPT, luxuries, joining her in declaring war on others, etc. She almost always backstabs me even when I obey her every request, but I still love her. How can anyone stay mad at such a cutie with such a sweet voice?
Nice. I, on the other hand, honor Cato's oratorical phrase as soon as I see Carthage in my game.
And then a wild Eminem appears!!!
Dido is the renamed name of 'Elissar'. Elissar is a Phoenician who left to north africa from Tyre Lebanon and made carthage. She spoke Phoenician the language with the mother alphabet of all languages.
She's so cute! ^_^ when I first heard her make a proposition I was like D'AAWWWW and I accepted despite basically bankrupting the Netherlands..
Dido speaks Canaanite/Phoenician, with a modern Israeli accent.
I guess they had a hard time finding someone alive who was actually from her time. /s
@@MusicGamesEverything Sarcasm not needed. I was simply offering information, not criticizing.
I wish it were Hannibal, although Dido did found Carthage, so I get why they used her.
Hannibal Barca was used in a previous civ before.
The Phoenicians were Semitic people who lived in the Levant near Lebanon on the Mediterranean coast.
Canaanite! I can understand some of it, it sounds really similar to hebrew
That's because they got an Israeli Jewish voice actor, to mix things up. She gave her an Israeli accent and Israeli pronunciation (modern Hebrew). You know- because every other eastern civilization in the game was basically Arabic themed (at least the voice acting).
+LuckyDukeSeven Phoenician is also literally in the Canaanite subfamily...
Also Darius was speaking Aramaic, which is compliant with the law that he himself made.
S.A. H.
Technically, Phoenician doesn't even exist. Only Canaanite does.
LuckyDukeSeven I've not heard that before, it runs contrary to everything I've read. Could you provide sources? I can probably access them.
S.A. H.
Phoenicians were never called Phoenician - It means "land of purple" in Greek, and is a term that historically was only used by Europeans. You can pretty easily google it and find out that they were all Canaanite, and all spoke the same language and had the same origins.
indeed, the most close language to it is Hebrew from all existing modern languages. It uses almost same roots for words, and if you speak Hebrew you can understand fairly a lot . Grammar structure, sounds and many words are almost similar. (like if you know Russian you will understand partially Western Slavic Languages like Czech )
Can confirm words such as queen is understandable because it is exactly the same
When she says "done", she moves into the Bigfoot pose. Also her song is more like Ode to Joy than Bismarck's hehehe
+Jolo Atlantis I believe it is based on the Hurrian Hymn.
Ancient Phoenician sounds like I made the language up...
boo kalalalalalalalala
According to Civ 4 Wiki, she is speaking a mix of Canaaninte and Phoenician. But yes, I did here a few Arabic words like "mamlaka", which I believe means 'kingdom'.
It's Punic. I just wonder how in the world they learned it.
It is abit similler to hebrew, they let a native hebrew speaker do the dubbing.
The voice actress has a thick Hebrew accent I think
exactly, spelling of sounds very very similar :) and language grammar uses Smikhut (adding owner relevance suffix to the word, which is very common and similar in all semitic languages)
Both Carthage and Rome came after Greece, and were greatly influenced by Greek art and architecture.
The similarities you see are most as a result of that.
Burukhu Ha'Kna'ana (Hakanane) Et Ata Leh'Mamlakat Ha'Na'aman. Anuk Dido, Ha'Malkat Qart Hadasht Wa'Kul Hu Lah.
lit. "The Canaanite bless you to the most pleasant kingdom. I am Dido, the queen of Qart Hadasht and everything that is hers."
Qart Hadasht = Carthage
The legendary Dido.
I snicker everytime
Why?
That sounds like a hard language to speak...
They made Carthage for the unique fighting strategy with the elephants
Carthage hadn't a king, they had a council and 2 suffets (like 2 prime ministers). However, The Barcid family of Hannibal (of which he was the head) has, by that time the most influential in the carthaginian politics.
I always destroy Carthage first thing in the game. She's such a pain in the ass
You must have some roman in you
@@boone4531 Karthago delenda est.
Her language doesn't seem to have a single word without the [ah]-sound in it.
Also it makes sense that Phoenician sounds similar to Arabic. They are both Semitic languages, and Semitic people.
For their next Civ game they should add Troy.
She supposedly founded Carthage, probably hundreds of years before Hannibal.
This language has too many dialects with Hebrew. As an Israeli I can actually repeat and understand some of the things she says. Same goes for Darius who speaks Aramic (although the accent is not modern Israeli like here)
Because Darius isn't speaking Farsi like he's supposed to.
+Wipit Usyzn The official trade language of Achaemenid Persia as laid down by Dariūš the second is Aramaic. He is literally complying with his own law, that he set down, specifically to accommodate the massive majority of Aramaic speakers in his empire. Old Persian was reserved entirely for inscriptions. Modern Persian (of which Farsi is a dialect) did not come about until about *1800* *Bastarding* *years* after Dariūš died.
Also, Firaxis has always been a bit bumbling with language choice in civ anyway, given that the majority of Civ players are anglophones (and it's fairly common knowledge now that the majority of anglophones are frustratingly monolingual).
Penikian = ganaan
i think is the ancient language spoken in Carthage
Well you're relation with the Queen of Carthage escalated as quick as Aeneid's
Love from Algeria 🇩🇿
very similar to Aramaic / Hebrew and in some part Arabic... same language group (Semitic), in her speech 2-3 words were similar to modern Hebrew as well as pronunciation , and sound "R"
0:42 How do you feel now? Do you see now that is not cute that somebody declare war on you?
The language itself is ancient Phoenician though. :)
Why isn't she saying the Q's more clearly? They sound closer to "Kh" than Q.
SHE IS SO HOTTTTTTT😍😍😍😍😍
I noticed the same thing. My guess they used an Ashkenazi Israeli voice actor, hence the uvular R.
Dido's cute
People complain when a leader for a civ isn't the one they wanted suck it it my country isn't even in the game.
Hate her. She's the type that plops a city next to you just to annoy you.
She remind me of my first love.
Credits say Julie Fainer.
I prefer Dido as leader of the Carthiginians. Hannibal was never the leader of Carthage, he was one of its generals.
It's greatest General, in fact he's worth a lot more that the 'real' leaders of Carthage. none of them were worth shit.
Too bad she committed suicide for a guy who didn't love her..
Is that Huttese?
I would have chosen Hanno the navigator as a representant of the splendor of Carthage (more than Hannibal, which lived during the very declive of the city). But of course, civ is a very non historically acurate game and nobody knos Hanno at all.
Civ is a semi-historically accurate game.. maybe 75%
Athchomar chomakaan. Athzaalar, yer an mamlaket, Ana Khaleesi, Dido. Vaesey, Firikhnharen
I'm greek and you just need to learn and you will see it...
Phoenician.
It's Phoenician, Very similar to hebrew.
That's because of the voice actress lol
@@jemert96Hebrew and Phoenician are closely related
Arabic is not my native language, but i understand a bit what she said. Are Carthaginian an Arab?
0:18 “Dumb”
indeed, but i wouldve preferred hannibal to be the leader of carthaege
What language its this ? Phoenician an punic people were semitic people ? Maybe Maltese ?
Dido summarized:
.
.
.
.
.
"Our spies in Carthage have found out Dido is plotting against you!"
weirdest language I have ever heard, doesn't sound like anything, maybe Hebrew
She's cute.
I wish we got the animations and models for Civ6. Civ6 leader animations and models look so bad and off
why not Hannibal? :(
hannibal is just a general, while Dido is actually a rightful heir of Phoenicia before his husband got murdered and she flee to modern day Tunisia and founded another city (and eventually, an empire) there
@@skyfeelan but she was not a real person, she is an invention of Virgil in the Aeneid
I know, but he made very important decisions which were about to totally crush the romans.
No, it's not. It's a sister language of Hebrew.
Her accent isn't very punic at all. I still like her, anyway :)
Carthage was influenced by the Greeks? Can you prove it?
Warrior Monk Nope. Phoenicians founded it that its people originated from Tyre.
Why not Hannibal? =(
Hankins Feichter
Gandhi never was a ruler. He was simply a spiritual leader who held no office, yet he's nuking it up in the Civ franchise.
Hankins Feichter
If they wanted to preserve tradition, they'd retain the two-ruler system they used to have in the earlier games
He ruled from some years after the war though as suffete.
Cuz, Hannibaby was sadly, not the sole Ruler of Carthago, but merely the head of one of the elite families that rule it.
@Frank Guo Feminism? But they told me it's because Dido is a goddess and Hannibal is only a general, all that? Feminism don't exist, yo!
What a language?
Dude I am Hebrew speaker it sound like Hebrew but it is not lol I am confused.
So tsuntsun =3
It's aramaic who did it...
It's phoenician, not aramaic
Like if you think she sounds like a Twi'lek... o.e
Canaaninte/Phoenician, with modern Israeli accent
Trade : Ala, don, mal, el sham shama sham. War: para lash mata ckan toan pjon ko than, ala war shan thal.
I'll write in Hebrew since it has the same alphabet as in Phoenician(just different shapes of the letters)
Halak - הלך - Go on
Tam - תם - Done
Ershan shamaan zan - ארשן שמען זן - Let me hear it
Bal Arash Mazal Itata. Galita et shanat Qart-Hadasht Bamukhakaraka. Puq/g Yomka! - בל ארש מזל אתתה. גלית את שנאת קרת חדשת במחקרך. פוג יומך - Fate is against you(lit. Misfortune is upon you). You discovered the wrath(lit. hate) of Carthage in your exploration(lit. research). Your days are Numbered!
I hope it helped.
Dror Yuditski Toda :D what is the relationship of Hebrew and Phoenician as languages? very close or not really? Would Phoenician be a Semitic language like Hebrew?
Very close. Phoenician was the closest Semitic language to Hebrew. The Paleo-Hebrew script was the same one used by the Phoenicians.
Almost all of our words were the same with the Phoenicians.
Why is she speaking like with a modern Hebrew accent
because Phoenician is the precursor to both Hebrew and Arabic (it's originated around the modern day Lebanon, which is just next door to Israel)
Carthago delenda est!
Hannibal would have been better
if you think her Aramaic is a horrible sounding language, you obviously haven't listen to the Inca...
+aldrick barber She's not speaking aramaic.... No wonder you think it's horrible.
Not speaking Aramaic.
That's Phoenician.
It was rather Phoenicians who influenced greeks.
BRRUKUW HAKANAN EH EIGHT ATALAMEN LAMKATA A NAMAN
Buruku Ha'Kana'anat El-Et Mamlakat Ha'Naaman.
Dror Yuditski Isnt she prnouncing things wrong?
No no, that's what also written in CIvWiki.
And what Pelly said makes no sense after "Hakanan"
Bismarck/Dido shipper. LOL
אנוק דידו המלכת החדש הכולולה.
Was she the wife of Hannibal or something?
That is just so rome. But Carthage is older than Rome so I'm confused.
Maybe fenician, but not semitic.
why carthage look like rome? can anyone explain?
SEXY!!!!!!
does she really speak punic, i thought that language is extinct now
+Augustas Juodis People can learn dead languages, you know. Also amazingly punic was not extinct until the fifth century AD.
What did she say? "Hi, I'm Dildo, queen of the carthwheelginas ?
It doesn't hebrew, It just sounds like hebrew.
Why isnt this hanibal? WORST VOICE EVER
ShadowbladeZZ Hannibal wasn't a leader, he was a general. Dido *made* Carthage.
+Ianus With some rope and some creative thinking, to be specific.
going to get hated for this but dido is the civ v best waifu, theodora gtfo
Terrible accent. She didn't get any of the pharyngeals right.
The original Phoenician/Sidonians were black hamitics. Queen Dido was black.
Actually they were semitic, not black
+Cult Originally they were. Research hamitics.
+Hannibal Of Carthage That's not to say there weren't some of them who mixed with the native north Africans, but the majority of them, including dido, were still fair skinned
ZaqueHunzahua Original Phoenician/sidonians were of hamitic origin. That part of the world was darker than it is today. Sidonians were black in origin. Carthage was established by black people after establishing trading routes across the mediteranean.
+Hannibal Of Carthage Carthage was a city settled by Phoenicians, it was fair skinned to begin with
