Let's all be reminded that this guy also holds a bachelor's and a master's degree from the University of Tokyo, the most prestigious university in Japan and one of the best in the world. You would think he majored in music theory or piano performance, but no, he's a trained mathematician, statistician, and information scientist. How does he even have time to practice?! He has my utmost respect.

His mother is a piano teacher so he received excellent training from a very young age and chose another career path while continuing to play. Hats off to him. I love his interpretations, too.

Thank you for sharing his information. I knew that he graduated from the University of Tokyo, but I didn’t know his major, and he has master’s degree as well!? New formula to memorize, “Mathematician + Musician = Mr. Sumino” His music is gorgeous, and I want to see him in the next stage.

Very happy news! Hayato Sumino will perform "Chopin Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor Op.11" with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra! ( Orkiestry Symfonicznej Polskiego Radia w Katowicach )
Currently, 11 cities in Japan have been decided to hold the concert, and the conductor is Marin Alsop. Hayato didn't make it to the final stage, but he get the opportunity to play with a Polish orchestra. This is really Fabulous.

Men should always look as if their appearance is not a major priority, which is why we all like to wear similar suits that differ only in details. Usually within a narrow range of colors. Attractive grooming in men draws attention away from grooming to confirm our main concerns lie elsewhere than physical appearance; in this case it would be music. But instead “Cateen” goes for a pretentious pseudo-Chopin look, which is what you would call an AFFECTATION, and the worst kind of affectation: one intended to seem “natural” but is actually extremely deliberate/calculated and very high maintenance. He’d be much better off with a simple, neat low-maintenance no/affectation haircut. Then we could focus more on us playing, how close THAT comes to the spirit of Chopin, rather than how much his hair does.

Seems that these music competitions can sometimes get pretty nasty. Not so much amongst the pianists themselves, but often amongst family, friends and countrymen - and there are frequently “deals” and fierce battles amongst the judges! I don’t like musicians having to play AGAINST one another; better to build bridges and play FOR each other. Just a thought :)

    • @JB-en4mm
      @JB-en4mm 2 роки тому +8

Agreed, so far he is the only one I've heard (I have not listened to close to everyone, too exhausting) make that Steinway 300 really speak and sing.
And lets not forget that a number of recent successful pianists got started with self-promotion. Simone Dinnerstein just paid for a recording of herself and it was a big hit (despite the sense that perhaps there are enough recordings of the Goldberg variations). And the pianist Valentina Lisitsa leveraged her UA-cam playing and popularity into concerts at Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall, extensive recording for Decca and even a record (w/ Hillary Hahn) with Deutsche Gramophone.
On another subject this guy reminds me of the great benefit of bringing a little jazz sensibility to classical music. In this he reminds me of Friedrich Gulda (different approach to the keyboard), who influenced my long time teacher (she didn't study with him officially, his only official student is Martha Argerich); the music is filled with driving energy that does not require maximum speed or volume to carry you with it because its rhythm is so compelling.

I posted this on his first round video viewed like 772.8K crazy! but I will post it here as well:
No wonder I was confused because when I thought about Hayato's performances. I am so glad I did not listen to the toxic people that say he is a UA-camr and his performances are overrated. I always wondered why I am so attracted to his piano--beauty is an undefinable element in life--meaning its something you cannot reason because once you try to reason beauty, it loses its meaning. Hayato's performance is the same--you cannot reason and technically rip his performances into pieces because it loses its form. His performance is an unfiltered beauty in it's pure form. I love his performances because my heart knows its beautiful and naturally evokes all past and present emotions to the surface. My ears deliver Hayato's notes and my heart understands his performances. I absolutely love CHOPIN--and every time he plays a piece I am not very fond of, he introduces me to its uniqueness and convinces me its beautiful. Then I end up liking it! The magical passion you possess by communicating with us through your piano is absolutely beautiful Thank you Hayato!
"To play a wrong note is insignificant; to play without passion is inexcusable." - Ludwig van Beethoven

He was competing in classical competitions BEFORE he became a UA-camr...I really don't understand why it would matter. His roots lie with classical music and all the foundation was already there...he's also has a very very strong affinity with jazz. He's all around super talented and it's clear he has passion and love for the piano, being a "UA-camr" does not subtract from his integrity as a musician!

He is an impressive serious pianist, not just a gimmick UA-camr. He plays very lively and likes to be showy which is fine for most listeners who like to be dazzled. He plays a bright and optimistic Chopin. The intro of the Ballad 4 was nicely played and not pensive or somber like many players tend to do. The storm after the light intro is very nice too. His Military Polonaise sounds flat and uninspiringly common. Nobody beats Cho on that piece.. Regardless, his dexterity and whimsicalness should make this guy a contender in the Finals. He sports a hairstyle somewhat like Chopin too.

I have seen some people talking about him being just a youtuber and not really deserves to be at this stage or whatsoever. I am just going to tell this, I have been following him on UA-cam since way before this competition and I can honestly say that he is the best pianist I have seen on UA-cam (and there are really great pianists on UA-cam). Just go and watch his "Winter Wind". It is flawless. Also watch his compositions, arrangements, live sessions. The guy is so much more than classical music. He plays jazz, disney medleys, anime music, his own arrangements on classical pieces (look at his Twinkle Twinkle Little Star arrangements) etc. etc. Incredible musician really, there is nothing he can't do literally.
I understand that this is a competition and of course anything can happen. I mean, one slip up, a couple of wrong notes or bars might get you to elimination. That's just how brutal and high level this competition is, especially in these final rounds. All these pianists here are incredible musicians in their own right anyways. Therefore let's think twice before judging people for being on youtube or any other irrelevant stuff other than the music they play.

Hayato Sumino conveys the fun of classics and the charm of Chopin to people around the world who do not know the Chopin International Piano Competition. Chopin's communicator.

A very honest and brilliant performance. He succeeded in doing even better than his first round. There is a great balance in his playing, nothing is missing and no excesses. Next stage please.

What a truly great pianist! Not only does he present Chopin’s music with clarity & passion but maintains a superb control of dynamics without indulging in monotonous fortissimo banging like many others. Definitely the best musician in the entire show.

Thank you for your hard work this time!Let me hear a great performance again in the third qualifying round!!!

Hayato's one and only performance with his extremely rich shining light is super awesome. And Hayato's passion comes through strongly in every note he plays!! It's infinitely beautiful, infinitely dramatic! It's very sublime! I can feel Chopin's thoughts strongly! I love Hayato's Ballade No.2 more than anything anyone has ever played.
