Me too! Most of the participants in the Chopin Competition have only a limited number of classical music fans. However, Hayato Sumino has many fans all over the world due to his versatile talents such as classical, jazz, pop and improvisational arrangements. This versatile talent is special. No one else can. How much would it have been worth if he played Concerto? It would have been more effective than winning. Chopin's music, People who think classical music is boring have changed their perspective, It must have entered a new era as Chopin living in the present age.
I LOVE the characterization of his Chopin interpretation. It’s shy, it’s vulnerable, full of wonder. Sometimes these sentiments are almost overwhelming, spilling into a more aggressive style. It just fits Chopin so well, the way I see it. I could really care less about who wins or loses these types of competitions. I enjoyed listening to him more than most others that participated, even those that made it farther than him.
Very happy news! Hayato Sumino will perform "Chopin Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor Op.11" with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra! ( Orkiestry Symfonicznej Polskiego Radia w Katowicach ) Currently, 11 cities in Japan have been decided to hold the concert, and the conductor is Marin Alsop. Hayato didn't make it to the final stage, but he get the opportunity to play with a Polish orchestra. This is really Fabulous.
I'm from Poland and I love Chopin's music. I found out about Hayato Sumino during preliminary round and it makes me upset when some people calling him 'just a youtuber'. Any critique shouldn't be share due to jealousy or any other meaningless feelings but should contain constructive, useful information, be objective. That's why criticises someone only because of totally not related motive is weak. It's unffair, he deserves as many respect and objective critique as other participants. For me he's an excellent pianist and I wish you to get to the final!
There may be jealousy and jealousy because of its popularity. Hayato Sumino is full of talent. Hayato Sumino loves Chopin and Poland, and he seems happy to play Chopin's songs with his whole body. His smile during the performance is refreshing like a boy. He looks like Chopin's boyhood. It would be great if Chopin heard this
Yes, he is a UA-camr. But one with a talent very few of the competition posses. One, that really knows music, and not just interprete. Not only an interpreter, but a Musician. All those talking about him in that way are just jealous or stupid.
I've been teaching piano for over 20 years and I've NEVER seen such flawless control of tone and dynamics. What you are hearing is pure genius, with stage presence to match it. In 100 years his name will be remembered with the likes of Gould, Rubenstein, Uchida, and Horowitz.
Thank you for your hard work this time!Let me hear a great performance again in the third qualifying round!!!
I am baffled by all this "social" discussion of Hayato as a UA-camr. What a2 nonsense! I've never heard of him on UA-cam but listening to him during the chopin competition has been a revelation. Very few pianists have the inate musicality to connect to a composer. Hayato does it in the most poetic and convincing way. Bravo, Hayato! Keep playing the way your soul feels, Chopin is smiling with you...
Totally agree. The Human Being has and is immense Potential. But it is evident that the mentality of some is very, very narrow, so much so as to make absurd and useless discussions like this one of the youtuber. He is an Artist, he has shown it, he is demonstrating it and he will demonstrate it.
Yes , it upsets me when people were Making smarking comments on his performance. Some people use freedom of speech and say whatever they want to say. People should have courtesy even when making comments on UA-cam.
If Tom Daley can be a UA-camr and an Olympic gold medal diver, why can’t Hayato Sumino be a UA-camr and an awesome pianist? There’s just no logic there. Actually I didn’t even know he was a UA-camr before hearing him play in the first round, but I really loved his playing and thought of him as an awesome pianist first. Hayato’s Chopin always makes my heart sing and dance. 😊
the absurd prejudice against his presence on social media/UA-cam from some people tells me they're just elitists trying to gate-keep. as if being a youtuber somehow discredits his skills as a pianist.
@@iamai_iggs Right like if anything, UA-cam should improve his skills. Having to polish pieces, doing many takes to get the right one, posting on a schedule, possible constructive criticism online, etc. should all help improve someone’s playing faster.
Ikr these idiots be living in 1980 thinking that the Classical Music industry shouldn't transform. One of the best things for the classical music industry is that it is transforming and changing with the times.
I think it's because of his big UA-cam presence.. which proves they do not know much about this competition or about him. Sumino has won several piano competitions before participating in this year's Chopin Competition. He is a well established pianist in his own right, even without the UA-cam fame.
@@f.shukri1370 Those who down played his skills are terribly mistaken. I don't know if any of the contestants can play different musical genres, compose music, improvise on the spot without notice, and enjoy himself at the same time. That is what Sumino is capable of.
His play makes me feel that Chopin was shy, charming, and playful, not only ironic or sorrow. Hayato is creating a new world of Chopin music for the next generation. I feel so happy to listen to his play and I know he attracts many viewers who may not have been so interested in classical music. I feel Hayato is the one who is making Revolution in classical music!
@@nguyentho6768 No, Chopin was Chopin, but I think the pianist who will win this competition should present the professional and pleasant appearance as well so that he/she would be well visualized as a winner. I think the jury will decide based on all the balance and their preference who would be the best to represent Chopin music as a performer, not thoroughly based on the technique.
Cateen literally went to Tokyo University, Japan's equivalent of Harvard. (People who enter this university often think about whether they should choose Harvard or Tokyo.) I don't understand why everyone is calling him "just a youtuber" because he is so much more talented and capable than some random social media star. Trying to gatekeep him is quite literally trying to gatekeep the musical elitist world... from a musical elitist...
@@gdkabsbdkwkwm4187 His specialty is speech processing. He is working on automatic music transcription by using machine learning.I believe he studied at the French Institute of Acoustics and Music (IRCAM).
I may beg to differ, but his pieces had quite poor use of dynamics and they were quite weak. The melody wasn't strong enough and the left hand was too powerful.
Agree in all counts what's been said here about the As Dur Polonaise. I also like that he's not a showman with flashy outfits and / or unnecessary grand gestures, and that he puts elegance before all- something crucial when it comes to play Chopin. I truly hope he makes it to the finals, but whatever the outcome will be he's worth to keep an eye on. I also highly welcome his presence on social media. There is a strange prejudice against that in the Classical Music Elite which I don't understand. We live in the 21st century, and who isn't active online simply doesn't exist. Even an old curmudgeon like me understands that... I wish I'd had this resource when I was 24!! Fortunately the Chopin Institute has understood that as well, and is doing an awesome job. Bravo!
@@pisicafairy everybody entitled to their opinion! I think men look better with shorter hair, and it’s much lower maintenance. Men should always look as if their appearance is not a major priority, which is why we all like to wear similar suits that differ only in details. Usually within a narrow range of colors. Attractive grooming in men draws attention away from grooming to confirm our main concerns lie elsewhere than physical appearance; in this case it would be music. But instead “Cateen” goes for a pretentious pseudo-Chopin look, which is what you would call an AFFECTATION, and the worst kind of affectation: one intended to seem “natural” but is actually extremely deliberate/calculated and very high maintenance. He’d be much better off with a simple, neat low-maintenance no/affectation haircut. Then we could focus more on us playing, how close THAT comes to the spirit of Chopin, rather than how much his hair does.

Hayato Sumino is an amazing pianist like lots of other contestants, but there is something that people leave out about him. Not only is he an incredible classical pianist, his skills in improvisation, composition and jazz are amazing, I have seen lots of classical pianist who perform brilliantly but when it comes to improvisation or composition they find it very difficult and aren't very good at it. Cateen is among the best all-round pianists I know of, and this is what makes him so incredible to me. This performance was very good in my opinion, I loved how he interpreted the pieces
Rewelacja, wielka prostota, powściągliwość, a zarazem ekspresja, wielka czułość, delikatność.
Nic dziwnego, że ludzie chcą go słuchać.
Hayato Sumono to fenomen pianistyki, technika to wysokiej miary kunszt połączony z wrażliwością i wyczuciem stylu Można śmiało Go nazwać Chopinem naszych czasów!.
He was competing in classical competitions BEFORE he became a UA-camr...I really don't understand why it would matter. His roots lie with classical music and all the foundation was already there...he's also has a very very strong affinity with jazz. He's all around super talented and it's clear he has passion and love for the piano, being a "UA-camr" does not subtract from his integrity as a musician!
Sadly, he is not among the finalists, and he must be heartbroken now. Listening to his upbeat pieces and reading all these wonderful comments has lifted my spirit, and hoping it lifts Hayato’s as well. I believe that as he was getting stronger through the competition stages, he will come out of this with even better opportunities, more than ever to express his music to a much wider audience around the world!
@@reasondro I cannot bear to watch the finals just yet. Later on, maybe. And perhaps after the competition ends, Cateen will post the video of his performance of the Concerto 1 with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra last Aug 25. 🤞🤞
Please don't worry. Afer the Chopin Competition Hayato sumino has become much more popular in Japan. He has got lot's of fans. And I am one of them, too. Now he is very busy for attending to the many concerts not only of the classic music but of Jazz or pops etc. He is going to playing "Chopin's Piano Concerto No 1" as a soriste with Polish National Symphony Ohchestra conducted by Marin Alsop at the several cities in Japan, in Sepember , 2022. @@kazumikato I too am learning to play the piano in my 50’s, learned it a bit in my youth. But when I saw his videos at the start of the pandemic, early 2020, I was inspired to play again. I got myself a Yamaha keyboard!
I read some snarky comments in the chat room while he was performing, something like, this is an int'l competition with exceedingly high standards, not some fan concert. I thought that was really mean. The guy has some serious skills; he earned his spot fair and square. He played well, actually.
Seems that these music competitions can sometimes get pretty nasty. Not so much amongst the pianists themselves, but often amongst family, friends and countrymen - and there are frequently “deals” and fierce battles amongst the judges! I don’t like musicians having to play AGAINST one another; better to build bridges and play FOR each other. Just a thought :)
Agreed, so far he is the only one I've heard (I have not listened to close to everyone, too exhausting) make that Steinway 300 really speak and sing. And lets not forget that a number of recent successful pianists got started with self-promotion. Simone Dinnerstein just paid for a recording of herself and it was a big hit (despite the sense that perhaps there are enough recordings of the Goldberg variations). And the pianist Valentina Lisitsa leveraged her UA-cam playing and popularity into concerts at Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall, extensive recording for Decca and even a record (w/ Hillary Hahn) with Deutsche Gramophone. On another subject this guy reminds me of the great benefit of bringing a little jazz sensibility to classical music. In this he reminds me of Friedrich Gulda (different approach to the keyboard), who influenced my long time teacher (she didn't study with him officially, his only official student is Martha Argerich); the music is filled with driving energy that does not require maximum speed or volume to carry you with it because its rhythm is so compelling.
Magnifique. Such a rare combination of pianistic virtuosity and creative genius. So many colors on that piano, blazing scales and arpeggios, and the variety in this interpretation. Please come to America.

Me too 😊 he's awesome!!!
Yes, very youthful and exuberant interpretation. As if catching the composer in the moment of his initial inspiration.

Very happy news! Hayato Sumino will perform "Chopin Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor Op.11" with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra! ( Orkiestry Symfonicznej Polskiego Radia w Katowicach )
Currently, 11 cities in Japan have been decided to hold the concert, and the conductor is Marin Alsop.
I have similar thoughts (Im also from Poland, and some people's comments on NIFC FB or other places are very unfair)
I'm from Japan, but I totally agree with you. I think your comment is spot-on. He's unique but so talented. I just love his play and performance.
Facts
There may be jealousy and jealousy because of its popularity.
Hayato Sumino is full of talent.
Hayato Sumino loves Chopin and Poland, and he seems happy to play Chopin's songs with his whole body.
His smile during the performance is refreshing like a boy.
He looks like Chopin's boyhood.
It would be great if Chopin heard this
Yes, he is a UA-camr. But one with a talent very few of the competition posses. One, that really knows music, and not just interprete. Not only an interpreter, but a Musician. All those talking about him in that way are just jealous or stupid.

Love it.

He is Playing......(piano.)
I've been teaching piano for over 20 years and I've NEVER seen such flawless control of tone and dynamics. What you are hearing is pure genius, with stage presence to match it. In 100 years his name will be remembered with the likes of Gould, Rubenstein, Uchida, and Horowitz.
I believe those undeserving finalists know that they are not in his league.
you are so dramatic...
his control is indeed very amazing

Exactly my case , instead of hearing Chopin as a famous name he truly made me discover him
I thought you were saying Chopin was like Hayato for a moment rofl

You are 100% right
Totally agree!
@@gdkabsbdkwkwm4187 His specialty is speech processing. He is working on automatic music transcription by using machine learning.I believe he studied at the French Institute of Acoustics and Music (IRCAM).
So true!
I am convinced he is one of the finest musicians on the planet.
Live recording of Concerto 1 is now up on his channel. With best orchestra of Poland
I may beg to differ, but his pieces had quite poor use of dynamics and they were quite weak. The melody wasn't strong enough and the left hand was too powerful.
He has a soul of chopin in mind.
FyI. Hayato Sumino performed Rachmanioff Concerto No. 2 in 2018.
ua-cam.com/video/wK6PuiQi3SQ/v-deo.html
Bravo!
Very well said
I mean except the part about you being an old curmudgeon. You don’t sound like one!
Is that why he has a simple, neat and trim, unpretentious, un-flashy *haircut* - he only cares about substance rather than superficial appearances?
@@AnonYmous-ry2jn that haircut suits him though, he had shorter hair in the past and honestly I think he looks better with his current haircut.

Chopin would certainly be proud of his well rounded pianistic nature.

Quelle maîtrise ! Quelle fluidité ! Quel toucher ! ! Je suis abasourdie...
Rewelacja, wielka prostota, powściągliwość, a zarazem ekspresja, wielka czułość, delikatność.
Wspaniala technika, wielki talent narracyjny. Rewelacja.
Nic dziwnego, że ludzie chcą go słuchać. Nie ma nudy, są emocje.
@@agnieszkatyczynska4417 Bardzo dobrze to Pani opisała, tak samo to czuję słuchając jego gry.

I read some snarky comments in the chat room while he was performing, something like, this is an int'l competition with exceedingly high standards, not some fan concert. I thought that was really mean. The guy has some serious skills; he earned his spot fair and square. He played well, actually.
Most people who does that is trolling btw (it means seeking for attention)
I've taken to muting chat.
Hayato Sumino San, you are the best, whatever the jury decides. Despite being Japanese you play Chopin like Pole, as if you were born an bread in the Chopin's country. I wish you win this competition.
