his hands most definitely continue to shake throughout his whole performance, more of that he begins to ignore it as he becomes possessed by his piece.
My favorite part about this one is the refrain, being able to accentuate some of the more potent harmonies instead of trying to exaggerate them really hit me.
He looks like Chopin, I always think so. He has much techniques, passion, strength. His performance is so sophisticated. I think if Chopin was alive today, he would like play like this.
breathtaking! He fully understands and expresses Chopin's sadness and passion. Can you believe that this pianist who plays so beautifully, delicately, and emotionally has a master's degree in "Science and Engineering" from the University of Tokyo? What a talented man!

It’s the phenomenon that isn’t widely talked about. It’s called “left-right” brain. His intellect matches his creativity! Often called ambidextrous brain.
I think classic piano teach u to use left brain and right brain in the same time…u read the pratiture and ur brain have to process what is have to play with right and left …thats why ussually people that can play classic piano is also smart in school …..
As a classical pianist myself, I could hear the mistakes he was making, but most people can't. Was his performance perfect? Definitely not, but I felt like his interpretation and musicality are so much better than others that get trained to interpret these songs in such a perfect way leaving no room for an organic flow to the song. I felt like Hayato captured the essence of Chopin even if his playing wasn't perfect. Brilliant stuff.
And this is what music is all about. It's not about how accurate it sounds, but how beautiful it sounds and how it brings people together and all the emotions and memories that come with the piece of music 🎶
@@alegriart From my understanding, sometimes he would make changes on the fly. Even his contemporaries played his song with different dynamics (to his annoyance). I think his etudes are meant to be played very precisely since they are basically pieces meant to improve your technique, while his preludes and sonatas are much more flexible. In the end though, one of the most aspects of all of his songs is making sure the melody undertone is sustained and can be heard perfectly, which Hayato does extremely well.
@@katkat3458 oh, it's one of my most favorite anime. In the anime, he completely makes his own rendition of the songs, which is controversial. Hayato isn't making his own rendition as he is using different (and better imo) stresses on different notes and slightly different tempo changes and volume changes. In the anime, the MC almost makes it sound like a different song altogether, and it's beautiful. So I guess it really depends on how much artistic license you enjoy and why you are listening. For me, the Chopin competition is all about trying to bring out the feelings that Chopin himself was trying to convey, which is why I think Hayato is excellent and why I dislike the robotic performances.

Just to add this: I like Chopin but he usually doesn’t touch me the way some other composers do. This performance got me emotionally closer to Chopins work after many many years listening to his music. For that I say thank you to this young and very talented artist.
I know what you mean (I think). Pianists, typically young ones, often “milk” Chopin pieces a bit too much for my taste-which, sometimes, turns me off. His sensitivity and range of emotions-from subtle to not so subtle-make his performance truly enjoyable for me.
Sumino's story continues after the Chopin Competition and there is an article by the senior producer of NHK general bureau for America in "NHK World Japan" 6 Feb, 2024 that is well worth a read! He made his USA debut in Boston Symphony Hall with Boston Pops in 2023 and is currently playing around the world with various famous orchestras. He will debut at Salle Gaveau in Paris on 7 Nov, 2024.
Before the performance, Hayato Sumino gently put his hand on his chest while climbing the stairs. It looked like he was greeting his beloved Chopin. He was here to meet Chopin. His piano was pure and free, with kindness and strength, and deeply touched I want to hear Hayato Sumino's piano again!
He is the definition of genius. I had never heard of him before the competition but have since been checking out a ton of videos and he is truly an amazing artist. Both his technique and musical sensitivities are out of this world. To have a good time check out his Hungarian Rhapsody no.2 where he improvises a 5 minute cadenza near the end of it. Crazy idea and maybe not " academically correct" but how amazing and exciting!
What do you mean "academically correct" ? In all the pieces that Liszt wrote, the cadenzas he left there were supposed to only be an example, the performer was expected to improvise one while playing the piece. I hope I don't sound rude but it is really sad to see that deep in our current generation ideology any performance that is not exactly fitting some standards but is instead creative and innovative is kind of repressed...
i love the amount of emotion he adds to the pieces. Being able to play the piano and play with your soul are very different. you may be able to play but to play with emotion is the true talent. absolutely beautiful.

Congratulations on 6 million views! This performance by Hayato about 3 years ago has always been a warm and inspiring light of the preciousness of life in my heart. Thank you so much for this never to be replaced time. It was like an exquisite gift from heaven! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
I am really impressed with the nocturne in C minor. I heard a blind pianist play this work perfectly years ago and since then I felt it was not possible to play it better. It is like this pianist has a control of the melody and counter melodies at once while requiring absolute evenness of rhythm with no hidden compensations due its extreme difficulty.
Man, if this was him nervous, I can only wonder how he plays when he's not. Imo, I feel a little sad... Nerves like this do affect playing even if it's not obvious to viewers. I wonder if he has tried beta blockers... they do wonders for performance anxiety and prevent adverse physical reactions to stress like this. Nerves to the extent of physical, unstoppable shaking usually destroy what you've worked for.
I watch a lot of piano performances but Hayato’s performance is truly one of those that stand out from the bunch since the first piece a rush of emotion can be felt and throughout from start to finish it’s as if I was in the audience hearing him he plays with his whole being it’s beautiful
Something so human and beautiful about seeing his hands shake at the start. It's easy to feel like these performers are at such a level of expertise that it must all come easy, but seeing that anxious, adrenaline rushed shaking reminds me of myself, and that even the best are not without their own doubts and nerves.
@@Croshiuz that's one of my favorite feelings as a musician and performer :') you're overcome with anxiety and then as you really let the music absorb you, everything else floods away, and it's just you and your art

Congratulations on 5 million views! Hayato sharpened his spirit to the highest degree and confronted Chopin head-on, fair and square, in the best possible way. The most superb and exquisite performance was produced. At that time, I felt Chopin and Poland more deeply and profoundly than in anyone else's performance, and my heart trembled tremendously. His truly beautiful, profound, sometimes delicate, and sometimes magnificent tone was like a connection to the beautiful and profound universe. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Hayato. And thank you from the bottom of my heart for the opportunity me to watch and listen to Hayato's performance over and over again, which continues to fascinate people around the world so very much.
This is so tough. You really cannot BS yourself through this - there are 200 years of performance history and everyone has a pretty good idea how it should be played and hears the slightest error. I really cannot appreciate these young artists enough, all of whom devote their lives to this music and deliver nearly flawless performances, with the differences in quality being really marginal at this point.
Relying on judges hearing and ingrown likes and dislikes on something so subjective as music is a really tough road for an artist. I am thankful, not knowing anything about classical music ( I enjoy listening ) I have the opportunity to hear this gifted pianist Hayato Sumino who shares with us. Thank you
I listened to this performance without looking at the performer. His playing is soulful, analytical and also free and playful. I feel so fortunate that I am alive to hear all this beauty.
almost 1 million views. Wow. Besides his wonderful virtuosity and explosiveness, he has done well in bringing the world to the wonderful music of Chopin.
Breathtaking.... He’s amazing, elegant and luxurious! Never saw such a talented guy in many ways. It’s like everything he touches and its become a gold.
I'm only at the end of the first piece but I have to say, this man means each note he plays. He is talking with the piano and I have never listened and understood the piece so well. Masterful.
The comments really helped me recognise his style of playing and i truly appreciate how diverse and amazing these ppl point of views. It is the first time i ever saw Hayato Sumino and his performance. He is wonderful
The trembling fingers is indicative of genuine passion. He's thinking about others enjoying what they hear rather than what he hears, and must play it as well as possible for them. This level of humility is the definition of true artistry.
I'm still disappointed by the fact that he did not get a spot in this year's finals. His touch was incomparable. I still congratulate the other winners, but this year's audience was robbed of the experience of hearing his concerto.
He's a pure artist. This is not just great technique. There is personality, charm, independence, passion, creativity, logic, intellect, empathy and a wealth of wisdom from the relatively limited experience of his age. He pours every bit of himself onto those keys. Please let nothing bad happen to Hayato Sumino.
And now that he’s played it with Marin Alsop, maybe he’ll get to perform it everywhere. I’ve got my fingers crossed that he’ll come to Chicago and play with the CSO. He deserves a serious international career.
I just discovered Hayato Sumino a few months ago and now I'm hooked. His playing has recently been an inspiration in my life. Both in the arts and healing from life's more demanding circumstances. Phenomenal discipline and achievement, wonderful young artist.
I was engaged with his playing before he even pressed a key. The look on his face, the gentle movement of his wrists, the soft tremble of his fingers... absolutely captivating performance.
I love seeing performances like this. He is just a free soul having fun with music. His spirit dancing on the keys and the notes responding back to him. So pure I was brought to tears.
This is my...I forgot how many times I have come back to this video but I just cannot get enough of his vulnerable, melancholy, sincere, and unfiltered performance! I am so excited to hear more throughout the stages. Best of luck to you Hayato san!
Cateen definitely improved over the last round. He's bringing something fresh, and individuality, unbridled passion, elegant touch combined with raw enthusiasm, dare I say joy, for playing the piano. Congratulations on a stirring performance!
Thank you to the algorithm that gave me this video. It is my first introduction to this wonderful musician; the first few notes in and his music gripped my heart - and from nowhere, I cried.
He brings sorely missed soul that’s been nonexistent since Martha argareich. I will never bite fully into the hanz zimmer argument, Chopin was merciless when he left it all out on the piano. This was near perfection for one of Chopin’s finest nocturnes, and frankly compositions in general.

Etude in C major, Op. 10 No. 1 is such a difficult piece that Horowitz, one of the greatest pianists of all time, never played it publically.
Dear Ski Ski,
Many thanks! 🌹🌿💐✨🏵🍀
Thanks!

Congratulations on 6 million views!
This performance by Hayato about 3 years ago has always been a warm and inspiring light of the preciousness of life in my heart. Thank you so much for this never to be replaced time. It was like an exquisite gift from heaven! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
Bravo!
His tone is so beautiful in the nocturne throughout but that middle section is just unparalleled. So gorgeous
From the way his fingers keep on shaking, you can tell how big of a moment this is for him and how nervous he is.
Hayato Sumino San, you play like a Pole, as if you were born and bread in the country of Chopin. I wish you win this competition.
Something so human and beautiful about seeing his hands shake at the start. It's easy to feel like these performers are at such a level of expertise that it must all come easy, but seeing that anxious, adrenaline rushed shaking reminds me of myself, and that even the best are not without their own doubts and nerves.
Two words can explain this - Chopin Competition.
Also amazing how he stops shaking as he gets into the flow state and there is nothing other than the music and pure emotion
@@Croshiuz that's one of my favorite feelings as a musician and performer :') you're overcome with anxiety and then as you really let the music absorb you, everything else floods away, and it's just you and your art

I really love his nocturne op.48 No.1
It's fragile and delicate, yet it makes me feel the passion to live
I listen to this performance over and over again
Fragile???? Vulnerable and passionate
@@christopherczajasager9030Maybe that's what I wanted to say
I'm not good at English and may not be able to choose the right words
The word "脆弱"("Vulnerable” translated in Japanese)" has a bad impression in Japanese, so I wrote it as "fragile".
can’t stop coming back for him
"A flawless execution of art. Perfection... just isn't a word. I think there's a spiritual element at work."
I keep coming back to his Op. 25 No. 10. It's so stunning

I love his playing style..it's quiet but I can feel it. unlike others who are too showy with distracting gestures
He is Chopin as he plays, even his hands look like his....amazing....love this performance!
Hayato’s Chopin Concerto with top orchestra of Poland is now on his UA-cam
Despite being so nervous on the first piece (his fingers shaking), he played so perfectly and gave me whole body chills wow.
True!!! Omg. I can just imagine how hard it must be to be in his position. He did an amazing job :)
This is what I was trying to say... I saw his finger was shaking. But he played so amazingly!
Relying on judges hearing and ingrown likes and dislikes on something so subjective as music is a really tough road for an artist. I am thankful, not knowing anything about classical music ( I enjoy listening ) I have the opportunity to hear this gifted pianist Hayato Sumino who shares with us. Thank you
That kind of playing deserves to be seen in a finale!
The accuracy and emotion in the first Etude is phenomenal!
I listened to this performance without looking at the performer. His playing is soulful, analytical and also free and playful. I feel so fortunate that I am alive to hear all this beauty.
It’s special. With so many great pianists in one place, it becomes even more clear who the special ones are.

The real winner for me. I discovered you by Chopin Competition and became a fan from the day on.🥰
I'm only at the end of the first piece but I have to say, this man means each note he plays. He is talking with the piano and I have never listened and understood the piece so well. Masterful.

His nocturne tells a story, a vivid, sad, tragic tale.
His intensity and feel for this piece is outstanding. you can tell how much he loves it
The trembling fingers is indicative of genuine passion. He's thinking about others enjoying what they hear rather than what he hears, and must play it as well as possible for them. This level of humility is the definition of true artistry.
beautifully said
I'm still disappointed by the fact that he did not get a spot in this year's finals. His touch was incomparable. I still congratulate the other winners, but this year's audience was robbed of the experience of hearing his concerto.
Just the most beautiful interpretation of Nocturne op. 48 no. 1 ever💜 brings tears to my eyes
Hayato’s Chopin Concerto with top orchestra of Poland is now on his UA-cam 👍
Amen!
And now that he’s played it with Marin Alsop, maybe he’ll get to perform it everywhere. I’ve got my fingers crossed that he’ll come to Chicago and play with the CSO. He deserves a serious international career.
His technique is terrible. But it sounds amazing!
Absolutely right he is a genious
One of the most beautiful Chopin interpretations I've ever heard. Truly. Tears rushing into my eyes.
Good luck in stage three and the finals 🤞🤞♡♡♡

me too
At the same time, I realized that I was happy to meet a pianist named Hayato Sumino.
me too!!
He brings sorely missed soul that’s been nonexistent since Martha argareich. I will never bite fully into the hanz zimmer argument, Chopin was merciless when he left it all out on the piano.
This was near perfection for one of Chopin’s finest nocturnes, and frankly compositions in general.
this man speaks, feels, and expresses through the piano with all his heart
and this video is the first performance I've seen from him.. that's true passion
