Layne is my favorite singing voice I’ve ever heard. I love Freddie Mercury, Robert Plant, Cornell, but Laynes voice was so powerful and raw. He isn’t talked about enough as one of the great rock singers!

      We Die Young
      Them Bones

      Love, Hate, Love
      Junkhead

      Dirt
      Angry Chair
      Man in the Box
      Put You Down
I was 10 feet from the band. Every song was phenomenal and Layne's voice was at PEAK!!!
He kept spitting on stage clearing his throat and asking the crowd, "Anybody got any "Ludes" then he'd say, "Just kidding." Then he'd day, "got any weed?" then "just kidding"
It was a small personal and up close show and absolutely unforgettable.
Didn't get to see Layne after the show, but gave a roadie some weed for him. We had eaten the ludes (:

      I agree 100%
I do always find it hard when people mention that Layne didn’t want to be remembered for his addiction, but for the music. Okay that’s a reasonable request, however, Layne chose drugs over everything, absolutely everything. The last 7 years of his life, it was basically zero music, and only drugs. I mean, when u take your millions you earned, and decide to buy a condo and lock yourself away until literally dying from the drugs you indulge daily, it’s hard to not bring that part up.

Especially when he had to defend himself for so long from accusations how he didn't do enough to save him, he should've done more etc etc. He tried damn hard beyond the point of frustration. He did all he could. An addict can only help themselves and if they don't want your help, you're only going to drive them away by continuing to try...it becomes tiresome from both sides. That's a big reason Layne became reclusive. I suffer the same affliction so know exactly where he's coming from.
All you can do for the addicted is be there for them. Say your piece but don't push the issue. Be their support system for when they need to talk and a shoulder for when they need to cry and their blanket for when they get scared...but don't be their anxiety by constantly reminding them they're killing themselves. They know that already.
Edit- Thought I'd add a suggestion for helping an addict from an addict's POV. If you have a loved one suffering from addiction, as I said in the last paragraph....be there for them but don't drive them away. As an addict you already feel like a burden to your loved ones and don't need to be constantly reminded of what you're doing to them and yourself.

@@TheStepmonkey Layne was very close with his mum. Nancy did all she could. He went to rehab 12-13 times and she tried being his support system but, as I said, only the addict can stop themselves from using. She was working in a drug and alcohol clinic for a long time and was working the front desk when she got that tragic call that changed her life forever. She sat by his corpse until she was physically removed. She still holds benefits for addicts and is there for anyone who reaches out to her. Layne and Nancy had always been close and he was open about his addiction...she just handled it the best way she knew how so she wouldn't drive him away.

  • @ikigai47
    @ikigai47 3 роки тому +7

Yeah of all the singers of that era Layne was probably best equipped to teach already great singers how to sing, what they're doing wrong and how they could improve. His projection, vibrato and overall feel was masterclass perfection. I did hear some of his iso tracks and wasn't crazy about how over processed they were though (not his fault). That's probably why Jonathan is saying he sounded better live. A voice like Layne's doesn't need dressing up, that's for bad singers. Excellent interview

Layne's dynamic balance of sheer volume/projection, vibrato, and his use of layering (melody and harmony) with Jerry is what made me a vocalist. It's beyond inspiring; beyond influential. He layed the groundwork for what vocal inflection can be, for me anyway.
