Except it wasn't dry... it was recorded so raw that you could hear the drums and high end bouncing off the wooden walls. People mistake naturally wet with artificially dry. It also helped that Kurt used at minimum two vocal mics panned left and right, which gave a subtle double-tracked effect in the mix.

I love Steve Albini's very strict and finite view on what a record producer's role should be in the creation of an album. It takes a lot of discipline to capture the sound the band/musician wants without having to taint it with your own "signature sound". The whole hiring a Plummer analogy was a perfect way of explaining it.
That's what he says but every last one of the records he's produced has his own signature sound anyway. I can recognize a Steve Albini album in 10 seconds.
All that matters is that they released a record that could be appreciated by their audience. Well said Steve. That is WHY bands (that are worthy of an audience ) make records.
This record was the most important record to me in my teens, up to my 20s. There is no other record that has had such a big impact on me in terms of the aesthetics of recorded rock music than In Utero. I think Steve once wrote about how Raw Power by The Stooges had informed his ideal of recorded rock music on a fundamental level. This is my equivalent. In hindsight I feel sorry for my parents that they had to listen to Scentless Apprentice echoing through the house 10 times in a row every day for years. But I also remember sitting in school thinking about little else than getting back home to be able to listen to the album because it was such a soothing and fulfilling experience for me.
Man I can totally relate to that, IU by all accounts was a complete departure from Nevermind although the one main-stay was Cobains pop sensibilities and melody, even in songs like Scentless and Milk it. It's a very dark and beautiful album, I've always found it kinda strange and unexplainable why I loved the album, such heavy guitar and distortion isn't usually my thing in music but IU was a bold and brave step away from bubblegum pop that Nevermind was, in comparison.

I was shocked when I first listened to In Utero. Fell absolutely in love with it by the end of it. It was such an interesting follow up album. But I can’t put it ahead of Nevermind. The first 5 tracks are just sonically otherworldly to me. But yea, In Utero kicked my ass soon as serve the servants begins
I love Nirvana, In Utero's great, etc. but it's kind of a bummer seeing all these vids of him answering questions about this one album over and over and over....
@Goggle products wow man... hahaha! I don't know about the rest of it, but you're *DEFINITELY 100%* incorrect about the "Chaka" on Dave Grohl's Bass Drum in the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" Video. Chaka was a prolific Tagger. I knew this when the Video dropped. But there have even been articles written about it since. Look it up.
@Jason Voorhees yeah, fair play... but I mean Jack the Ripper had a lovely Squash Soup Recipe. Is it not possible to be both a monster in some regards... & a darling in others, Jason?
Even Vs. is a bit polished and quite clean sounding, I love In Utero but the way it seems it was re-mixed after Albini it only seems to sound good turned up more loud than regular, regular not so good, opposite with nevermind! It may have been a bit too smoothed out, dynamics don't change and Albini's sounded raw so I can see a bit of re-mixing to make it full but not to take some rawness and dynamics out of it which makes Nirvana nirvana, that's best for them but music is awesome and is still great turned up, Vs. maybe even better remixing, maybe even better but musically In Utero is incredible, Vs. too but In Utero musically is incredible raw and unheard expression from Cobain like on tracks like Scentless Apprentice, nothing as raw and on edge expression as that. I think Vig did a good job on Nevermind but that's opposite, it sounds better at regular volume! Cause I turned up and lo and behold guitars not big anymore as such, having many speaker systems and patient neighbours helps! ;)
Butch vig has some amazing albums under his belt from Smashing pumpkins to sonic youth to soul asylum to nirvana not to mention garbage.. I prefer In utero but then again I'm not a huge PJ fan.. it's not thier music- I loved MLB and Temple Idk i guess Eddie by himself doesn't cut it for me.. i need a little rawness that Vedder never seems to deliver
@@dmvconartists2542 You prefer the rawness of say In Utero, that naked, soul bared sound? I do, I loved Ten but haven't listened to Vs. much you know, Nirvana is very raw which I always have liked, probably a bit more hardcore in a certain sense than Pearl Jam, Pearl Jam is probably what comes after the hardcore and I prefer it then but when I want something intense it's Nirvana or other music. It's just finding the time, everything's everywhere but when I have it it's in the pocket.
I've always compared In Utero to Pinkerton (Weezer) because they both sound like you're sitting in the room with the band while they play the album live. I love albums that sound like this. Can't fucking stand the way most other albums sound so over-produced.
The funniest thing about this is that 99% of people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the sound quality of some kid recording it in his basement in fruityloops and a ten million dollar studio recording.
Hey calabiyou, I have a new interview with Albini coming soon, he's gonna be taking about In Utero in detail, if you haven't already could you subscribe?
Last year I have purchased a vinyl of 'In Utero', the 'Back to Black ' edition. As soon as 'Heart Shaped Box' started playing i felt something was off (though in a good way). Then when I heard the guitar solo I realised - this is the original Albini's mix! I have googled this particular version of the record and after a short investigation I found out that in the early 00's some German record company wanted to reprint the album for a CD re-release and by mistake received the wrong masters - and this was also the master used for the 2016 vinyl reprint. Must have been a mistake toi, since the cover states that Heart Shaped Box and All Apologies were remixed by Scott Litt, while the versions on this album were clearly the versions before the remix. The album is identical besides these two songs (and I prefer the Albini versions, you can find them on UA-cam).
When i first listened to it i felt what is wrong with the recording. Is it kinda live? Later, i fell in love with it. I cannot imagine filtered refined sound of those song now.
steve albini was such a great choice for that very specific record dont know that anyone else they could have realisticly goten could have done such a good job and give that sort of production an dmixing needed than him
It sucks. I really enjoyed Albini's original (unmastered?) mixes those that did slip through. It felt right to what the album was. I only like remixes/remasters when the original were crushed to death. That wasn't what the original sounded like at all in this case.
If you like how your voice sounds on a record. What do u think fans would think. Get comfortable with your own voice and you will always be a singing music making star
I got the CD the week it came out. I remember putting it in the weak little CD boombox I had and the swell of giggly emotion when I heard the first seconds of "Scentless Apprentice". That song is still completely hilarious to me, like a Frank Zappa song. The band is in on the joke. I still smirk every time I hear that dumb drum beat, then the most simplistic hardcore-ish lick of all-time, then the eventual utterance of "you can't fire me cuz I quit".
The music industry has always been detrimental to the advancement of the artform that is music. Sometimes though, if you had a great band like Nirvana, they were able to take that energy and pressure and put it into making even greater art.
Albini is the only major record producer (pardon me, recording engineer) who doesn’t get a royalty. Charges a flat fee for working on anything. That’s a mensch and a half
Hey inutero10, I have a new interview with Albini coming soon, he's gonna be taking about In Utero in detail, if you haven't already could you subscribe?
There’s more than just vocals not loud enough with Steves mixes. Most if not all are muddy with not much definition in the kick or bass. The bass farts like a turd. The guitars phase too much. And the overhead mics are panned the wrong way around. Steve is an amazing engineer but his mixes are slap bang here you go
Soul Slip. I’m an audio engineer and could say in much greater detail how bad the final result sounds. But also on how easily it could have been fixed instead of the mush we ended up with. A lot was due to mastering to try and boost the vocals. The 20th anniversary release has two original albini mixes that didnt suffer that mastering. I’d advise you take a listen. They dont sound the same as the mushy versions that ended up on the original release.
Hey guitarczar, I have a new interview with Albini coming soon, he's gonna be taking about In Utero in detail, if you haven't already could you subscribe?
For the most part bands know what the people want and the recording exc ruin the second album. I've watched so many documentaries stating they gave into the managers etc on the second album and we learned to never do that again. What is sad is all the others that weren't given the chance to redeem themselves.

Yea, you can't be hip if you like Nevermind cuz everybody likes Nevermind. Booo Nevermind.
Total opposite of Butch Vig's approach on Nevermind. And still both albums are brilliant in their own ways.
he just remixed his initial point 10 times in a row.

He felt they had "wrung the sponge." Well put.
Albini is a mensch. Very honest and apparently unfailingly ethical. Shellac is great to see live, as well! :)
So much respect for Albini.
such a down to earth man...must have been a hard time for nirvana.. i admire his decision to let nirvana do whatever they feel right
Great interview
I Absolutely love In Utero, my favorite track is Dumb.
I love Nirvana, In Utero's great, etc. but it's kind of a bummer seeing all these vids of him answering questions about this one album over and over and over....
Really want to hear what the unreleased version sounds like, and have a DAT tape copy of the original (in my dream=)
In Utero is an amazing album!!!! Thank you Nirvana for being true to your fans.
He's such a genius. He knew what was best for Nirvana at that point in their career and boy did he deliver
Hey ironman thanks for watching my Steve Albini interview, if you haven't already, could you subscribe to my channel?
Why do I have a feeling “the band” had very little to do with the remixes by Litt, and that the record co. were the real people behind the curtain?
i agree with you there. Kurt did say that he didn't want , the "polish" of Nevermind he wanted a "corrosive" sound.
"
Steve Albini seems to have such a healthy attitude...
@Goggle products wow man... hahaha!
@Jason Voorhees what am I saying?! You're right! Burn the witch! Burn him!!!!
not exactly "the end of the story" though is it? Didnt he do a set of remixes in 2013 for the anniversary release?
he does have a good point. The guy that installed my toilet insisted it's already been painted, but I got go tell him to paint it poop, so thats cool.
I appreciate Butch Vig after watching this. Suicide aside, is In Utero better than VS.?
Even Vs. is a bit polished and quite clean sounding, I love In Utero but the way it seems it was re-mixed after Albini it only seems to sound good turned up more loud than regular, regular not so good, opposite with nevermind!
Hey Joshua, I have a new interview with Albini coming soon, he's gonna be taking about In Utero in detail, if you haven't already could you subscribe?
A true and honest producer, few ever had the integrity such as him.
GOOSE i would think that Steve would not call him self a producer but rather an engineer.
Hey Goose thanks for watching my Steve Albini interview, if you haven't already, could you subscribe to my channel?
I've always compared In Utero to Pinkerton (Weezer) because they both sound like you're sitting in the room with the band while they play the album live. I love albums that sound like this. Can't fucking stand the way most other albums sound so over-produced.
The funniest thing about this is that 99% of people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the sound quality of some kid recording it in his basement in fruityloops and a ten million dollar studio recording.
Is there any way to hear the actual Albini mix???
Hey Terry, there are a few videos of it on youtube

I wish I could have had Steve record my EP when I put it out but I could imagine the $$$$$
Steve seems like the kind of guy I'd want to work with if I were making a record.
I'd like to hear the original mix.
You can find some of albini's mixes on you tube. And actually I think some of the songs are still the albini versions on the album if I'm not mistaken

Albini has perfect integrity. Fucking RARE!

In Utero is the best album I have ever heard
steve albini was such a great choice for that very specific record dont know that anyone else they could have realisticly goten could have done such a good job and give that sort of production an dmixing needed than him

lol ur the pop kid, if u consider nirvaGods to be pop than everything u heard on the radio is, choose ur camp wisely :)@Jason Voorhees
It sucks. I really enjoyed Albini's original (unmastered?) mixes those that did slip through.
It felt right to what the album was.
I only like remixes/remasters when the original were crushed to death. That wasn't what the original sounded like at all in this case.
I Commando In Utero sucks, damn...it’s a phenomenal album. Sorry you can’t enjoy it.

It sounds nothing like 'Nevermind' - Job's a doner! 👍
If you like how your voice sounds on a record. What do u think fans would think. Get comfortable with your own voice and you will always be a singing music making star
So true
I got the CD the week it came out. I remember putting it in the weak little CD boombox I had and the swell of giggly emotion when I heard the first seconds of "Scentless Apprentice". That song is still completely hilarious to me, like a Frank Zappa song. The band is in on the joke. I still smirk every time I hear that dumb drum beat, then the most simplistic hardcore-ish lick of all-time, then the eventual utterance of "you can't fire me cuz I quit".
Hey Jacob thanks for watching my Steve Albini interview, if you haven't already, could you subscribe to my channel?
I wonder how an Albini-produced/engineered Slayer album would sound like.
When I bought In Utero in 95, I had heard Bleach and Nevermind hundreds of times. Listening to the album, I thought, "What the fuck is that?"
You tell em Steve!

You did good.
But there's few songs where vocals should be louder.
such as?
@@Alejandrakoxxx Radio-friendly unit shifter
Listen to the chorus of "All Apologies", vocals are not loud enough
It would cascade into a capitulation - Steve Albini 2019
you gotta respect a person that knows their lane and owns it like a boss

For the most part bands know what the people want and the recording exc ruin the second album. I've watched so many documentaries stating they gave into the managers etc on the second album and we learned to never do that again. What is sad is all the others that weren't given the chance to redeem themselves.
