As a kid, my grandfather had 2 summer cottages. The first is buried somewhere deep underwater in the Sandusky Bar. The second, was a Kelley's Island. During my childhood, I spent a few days on Kelley's, mostly at the state park. It is the site where I developed my love for fishing for white bass. I need to visit more often.
LOVE Kelleys Island! Every year we spend a week at Put-In-Bay, and always take a day trip over to Kelleys to enjoy the scenery and the food! Every time we go to the Glacial Grooves we discover something different. The Winery is a lot of fun - and the Kelleys Island Cantina has amaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing Mexican food and fantastic Margaritas. WELL worth a visit! Someday we'd like to spend a few nights there, get a feel for the island life.
Have you seen how the park revamped the Grooves walkway & signage recently? I think it was completed in May of 2023. They did a great job updating it from the old 70's look it formerly had. Worth a look if you get a chance to see it again.
I went to summer camp a years as a kid at Camp Patmos. It was fun. The glacial grooves now have a walkway constructed over them to view them and to stop the public from climbing on them.
We went there for a festival, hiked the island because we couldn’t get a golf cart or bike. I recognized the street and store where you rented the cart, as we danced the cotton eye joe and other line dances there. We’ve been to Put-in-Bay as well, but I have a tunnel pass, which is much easier to get to the island than by boat.
Your attitude toward Ohio is so funny and so typical of Michigananders. I felt the same way until I moved far south in Michigan and started going there because it was so close to home. Shh-don’t tell anyone there are some worthwhile parts to Ohio!
I have a house up there on the SE side. Gonna move up there permanently in the spring and have the kids go to school there too. My brothers and sister all graduated from there. Our house will be a airbnb eventually😁👍
I will always have extremely fond memories of Kelley’s Island. I went there once with with my father, uncle, and grandfather, and drove around with my grandpa on a golf cart, where he (at the behest of my grandma) gave me my uncle’s childhood 1960’s copies of “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings,” which I read in our tents by the lakeside in the park during the trip. Thank you, Mawmaw, Pawpaw, and Uncle Boo, for those amazing gifts and memories 🙂
I moved to OH after north Texas and south Alabama. Yes, there are fewer sunny days. But, it’s cooler, less humid, and has seasonal variety. Oh, and no hurricanes and can buy house insurance.
There are a lot of great restaurants to eat at, often offering live music. Downtown is small but fun. You can dock at the marina downtown or dock at the marina where the ferry comes in that is more protected and very quiet. The cafe there is great lunch and breakfast. You can be around people and music or you can be where it's quiet or do some of both. North of downtown, the historical museum and the resale shop 2 doors down are fun, museum is VERY inexpensive to visit. The sand beach, part of the state park/campgrounds is very nice as is the white sand beach at the end of the trail for Scheele Preserve. Amazing sunsets are viewable at West Bay Inn on the west side of the island, with a great view of Put-in-Bay and Perry's Monument, a lot of people show up there to watch sunsets. We dock where the ferry comes in, live on our boat from late April to mid-October but also own land on the island. Really enjoyed your take on KI and the videos, thanks for sharing!
FYI, there's a coastal wet land near Fremont MI at the intersection of 28th Street (a seasonal road) and the North Country Trail. It's the coastal wet land farthest east of the ocean.
WAIT! I been to Kelly's Island. Hell yeah, to pick up a friend who was at the church camp there. It was a long, long time ago... long. But he got to rent a ride on an old relic, Ford Trimotor that went from the island to the mainland. I wanted to go too, but it was too many trips using the car ferry - was long. Rock-paper-scissors, he won and got to go on the historic airplane. Long time ago, almost totally forgot! about it. Great video, love the channel.
Greetings from OH-IO!! Great video of Kelleys Island. Wish I'd know you were coming that's my stomping grounds. Id also recommend a trip to North Bass Island. Ohio's northern most and arguably most remote state park. Be a great trip with Thor since it can only be accessed by private boat or plane.
@@RestlessViking Boats I know, planes not so much. Staying on N. Bass coming by boat is a lot easier now that ODNR put in 4 moorings. I know the airport has a paved runway but not much else there. If you want local info I'd be glad to help.
@@chrisjohnson7364 Looks like a little 1,800’ N/S runway in fair condition. That’s about the limit of old 76W’s takeoff distance. Looks like a boat would be less risky. Moorings eh. Any chance of a shore tie with anchor astern?
@@RestlessViking Yes. Honey Point (Smith Pond) the point on the southeast of the Island would provide good protection except from the southwest and west. Closer to the main body of the island the better protection. Manila Bay has good protection but no access to the island's interior.
KI is a great getaway for a quick weekend vacation. Next time you have to check out the winery, which is one of the best things on the island (it's close to town, it has a pizzaria/mexican resturaunt, stinky farm animals you can pet, there is cornhole/horse shoe pits, and they usually have a band playing there).
Always neat seeing outside of Michigan. Us being from s/east Michigan and avid campers we mostly go north in michigan. Never really even thought of camping outa michigan until recently. Fiancé seen apic of hocking hills in Ohio. We're thinking next year branching out and going south. Just hate the slow highway speeds anything south of the michigan border. Love the vids dude 👍🏻
Hello Viking and Poppins thanks again 🙏🏼 for your scenic tour. I like how you include the maps in your videos. Travel safe and I look forward to your next adventure. Greetings from the Alpine 🇨🇭 country.
Unknown at this time. We have launched a full investigation as to the whereabouts of the beard. The face had made a full recovery and is expected to continue to thrive.
Why the snark when you say going thru Ohio. We Ohioans are citizens of this country just like you pal - you are snarking on good human beings that have a right to be in this universe like you, your highness... Arrogant elitist much?
Like most small airports, the terminal is only used by private pilots and occasional charters. There aren't scheduled flights there. Airports have a bit of a duty to provide facilities for pilots and aircraft, so they leave it available.
☺️ before the beard! Poppins, you handle the Cary quite.
In between beards. . . and Poppins is a steely eyed speed racer with the carts! 😀
Thank you for your content. I appreciate it because I also have a thirst for knowledge of days gone by and exploring

I grew up going to Kelleys with my grandparents and am certified to land at the airport. My favorite of our Islands and hope to buy a home there soon!
If you like to party, the place to go is Put-in-Bay. Kelly's is actually pretty chill.
7:01 Too funny…just the way you looked and the way you said it.
😄
Oooooh those grooves are groovy!
I found you and subbed!!!!! It was the Ohio laugh. I'm a Michigander. Monroe.
🤣😂 Thanks for finding us!
The rip rap that surrounds White Shoal Light was quarried on Kelly’s Island.

😂😆😬 It was jarring when I watched the video too!
Pelee Island is a great place to visit.....ferry service from Sandusky OH, or Kingsville ON or Leamington ON
So many great lakes islands...not enough summers! Great video Viking ;)
Thanks, man. Yep, gonna have to start visiting them in the winter. ❄️ 🥶
It’s usually a good idea to decline a stranger’s mushrooms.

Ohio can be beautiful but damn is it overcast like all the time. Headed to the sunshine in FL 2 years ago.

😂😆 I know, right!!! It's back already, but short. Poppins said I looked like Santa Claus, so it had to go for a little bit.
