20 years later it's still a stunning, engrossing piece. I envy those who get to watch this with fresh eyes.
Absolutely. I watched it for maybe the 12th time last night and caught some new perspectives I hadn't quite considered before
@@chrisjfox8715 same here. New perspectives on the cowboy, the hitman, the director, and especially LA itself as a character. I was assured it's still the masterpiece I remember it to be, and will remain that way in cinematic history.
Super impressed by the image quality here. Criterion did an outstanding job on their first 4K. Excited to see what else they can bring to the format.

The funny thing about Criterion is that so many of their Blu-ray masters are finished at 4K, meaning they could basically just print the scans onto 4K UHD discs and resell them in 4K. Don't know what's stopping them, because I'd really love a Barry Lyndon 4K release!

This is great news. My copy is in transit from Amazon in the U.S. to my home in Canada and should arrive next week (it cleared Customs in my country today). I'm excited to see it. 😀
Ugh. I just got the BD a couple months ago when I got the rest of Lynch's BD's that I needed. I really want this but idk when I'll upgrade. Glad to hear it'll be worth it when I do.

I blind-bought this during the B&N 50% sale, and I'm looking forward to checking it out. Looking at screenshots, it looks like Criterion did a fantastic job with this 4K and it seems like it's going to look incredible!
I'll tell you right now, if this is your first watch you are gonna be like "wtf" but when you actually get what Lynch is doing it'll click haha.

Sold! Ordered the 4K of "Shawshank Redemption" this morning, will get "Mulholland Drive" first week of April. Soon, the "classy" section of my 4K disc collection will all be drivin' Ferraris.
Why would you want any indication it’s 4K… that’s why I like steelbooks. Just the film.. no bullshit

Great review, this is a must-buy in 4K. That cardboard DigiPack is a bit disappointing, though, would have preferred just a plastic case. For something like The Sweet Smell of Success it kinda made thematic sense to go all in on the paper-heavy presentation, but it still wasn't great.

It is based on the 2021 new 4K scan, rather than 2015 4k scan. I believe the difference is minute.
Great review! My blu ray disc on the 4k set does not include any supplemental materials (my regular Mulholland Drive blu ray disc from Criterion does - interviews, etc.). Anyone else in this situation?
Never noticed the disc doesn't have scenes or chapters until checking out some favorite scenes on the new 4K. Is this common with Criterion or Lynch discs?
I was also disappointed there's barely any updating of the packaging. I'm probably one of the few people who isn't generally a fan of Criterion packaging. My new set already has worn corners.
It was Lynch’s decision to not include chapter stops.
Mulholland Drive didn't even have chapter stops when it came out on DVD back in 2000. Lynch prefers that none of his work has chapter stops since he believes that a film should be experienced as a whole.

@@grrnoise i hear ya but a player crashing is far less likely than an internet connection going out or slowing down, if you ask me. Lynch likely insists on the lack of chapter stops now more than ever as a fight against this increasingly popcorn/microwave consumption society we live in. I respect it. Personally, I can relate to the fact that if I stop a movie then pick back up where I left off days later then I'm not really in the same place mentally and emotionally. He's fighting against the fact that if you're experiencing a film of his in pieces then you aren't really allowing yourself to *fully immerse yourself* in that world. Tons of people will tell you "I can follow a movie just fine no matter how much I interrupt it" but Lynch's artistic intent is more organic than it is cereberal. A film gripping you and holding you there speaks louder than simply remembering everything that happened.
Bottom line back to your point (lol), I don't think a crashing media player is of much concern.
