The Irishman actually had a short theatrical release prior to going to Netflix. I saw it on the big screen and it was a great experience.
I saw it at the old Fox Westwood Village theater in LA. It's a 1,400-seat movie palace that was built in 1930, even before Fox Films merged with 20th Century Studios. It's one of the few theaters in the area that projects 70mm, and one of the last theaters to still carry the THX certification. Seeing that movie there was one of the most incredible cinema experiences of my life.
The Irishman along with Blade Runner 2049 are the two films in the past 5 years I've watched more than a dozen times each and are absolutely great films
Me too, lol. I also like the revnant in 4k,its incredibly clear and awesome movie too
i love the irishman - it’s truly a beautiful film. i don’t watch it very often though, since it takes up half the day lol
What? What do you do in life…
Bold statement that piques my interest. Haven’t watched Irishman yet, but just bought the Criterion based on this video. BR2049 is a masterpiece that lulls me to sleep.
Criterion have to be planning some 4K releases for 2021 - they have so many 4K restorations sitting on the shelf that could do with solid 4K discs. They'll be playing catch up to some of the other boutique labels already doing 4K if they're not quick. Great review man, hope you're well.
I would buy anything from criterion in 4K HDR. So sad to see so less support from them in 4K ! Maybe they’re going to wake up in 2021
@schwiggity There are quite a few classics already available on 4K disc and more on the way.
I'm not so sure. They stopped dvds when moving to bluray because there's only so much they can charge. Criterion blurays cost the same as regular 4K blurays. They'd have to charge 30-40 which people aren't going to pay. Those boutique labels don't charge anywhere near what Criterion does already.
@@bradavon they never stopped DVDs. Even The Irishman got a DVD. You're right in that 4K would be more expensive. I could see 60 dollars per one. Many people only buy Criterions in the regular sales, so half off wouldn't be too bad.
@@ElliotCoen they have mostly. Only a few releases get a dvd release now. Their UK arm is bluray only. Half of 60 would be 30 😱. They might in the US but it would also lock international buyers out. Who sadly don't get to partake in the sales. Remember they've got o compete with the larger streaming market. Many think the Criterion 20 is a lot. 60 would be too prohibitive.
Another interesting video is where someone used deepfake tech to fix the bad de-aging and CGI they did in the film; it's on Shamook's channel.
Loved my bluray of the Irishman, im a physical media guy
You should do a video comparing 4k discs to streams, I think it would be interesting to see how big of a difference you can see between some of the top 4k discs and streaming services
From some of the screenshots you posted, I think the colors looked a little better on the disc than the 4K stream.
Not true screenshots. Cell phone photos will never be truly accurate, not matter how "pro" the phone is.
The screenshots do not represent an accurate look of what it looks like with HDR/Dolby Vision. I also compared the disc to the Netflix stream after letting the stream buffer for a whole 5 minutes. The stream definitely has more sharpness, deeper blacks, and better ranges of color. the compression has gotten pretty bad with Netflix though. about a month ago, they decided it was a good idea to cut the 4K bitrate in half. they said they "promise to keep the quality the same." Which is a complete lie cause every 4K stream right now looks worse on their service.
@@UnbelievabIeMontages and they keep raising their price while lowering quality
Waiting for the Parasite 4k vs the Criterion Collection
"I Heard You Paint Houses" is also the name of the book that the movie is based on.
You see the full aspect ratio in the criterion, notice how some guys are cut off in the netflix stream
I noticed that too. Aspect Ratio can really add so much to a movie
This comment pretty muxh sold me on the criterion blu ray. Thanks for that tidbit
The movie DID get a theatrical release. Limited for 30 days pre-Netflix debut. I have seen it in the theater, on Netflix and bought the Criterion. Looking forward to seeing that as well.
30 days barely counts and usually select cities. For me London the other side the country. Netflix wants to kill cinema sadly.
I hear ya, but I'm honestly not buying another Criterion disc until they move to 4k. At that point I'll buy and re-buy whatever they put out.
I try to pick up all the Netflix Criterion releases just to support that partnership. I hope Da 5 Bloods gets a release
I want the ballad of buster Scruggs on criterion so bad
@@blazesawyer7662 I know right? Someone get that movie on physical media.
Same but with I'm thinking of ending rhings
@@samlyf101 that’s my favorite movie of this year! I would love for criterion to release a Blu-ray for it.
Got to see it in theaters and I feel so blessed that I did. 🙏🏻
You need a bigger TV and decent surround sound. Once you have that everything is better at home than the theatre. Better image quality and better sound!
Unless you simply enjoy the movie theatre experience of course. I personally don't because it's too loud for me, plus I don't like going out much lol
@@bobdigi500 Tenet was the only film I’ve seen in a cinema/movie theater that felt too loud (similar to some concerts, like it could actually damage hearing). Other than that I’ll always love the real cinema experience the most, despite having a good room (100” screen, Atmos) at home.
Definitely some spicy takes in here
Awesome video man! Have you thought about doing a video on films or media that you'd like to see a 4K release of?
I'd love to see a 4K Blu Ray of Planet of the Apes 1968
I would love the godfathers movies, the good the bad and the ugly and the rest of the classic westerns 😊
@@alexfernandez8083 Thanks for that information now 2021 looks a lot better 😊👍
indeed!!! :)
I know it was divisive but I loved it. The end of a legendary era that changed film forever
I wouldn’t say it was divisive, it was nominated for 10 oscars and has 96% on RT
@@nationalcoasternews5798 amongst the "fans" it is definitely divisive. I personally thought it was a drag and hard to finish.
Was just not nearly as good as I hoped... And that comes from an Italian/Irish mob movie fan and Italian myself...
@@producerevan88 If you haven’t yet, give it a rewatch. It’s definitely one that grows on you upon multiple viewings
I think the blu ray looks magnificent. The Netflix 4K stream has a layer which makes it slightly darker. The stream does look impressive but I prefer the blu ray.
i'm sure netfix is compressing it so much that 1080p is their "4k" and I think it's intentional the 4k realease is not available outside of the fact Criterion doesn't do 4k.
Jeff, could you please do a review/comparison of Criterion's release of Parasite, as compared to Universal's 4K disc? Universal has no special features, and criterion has a TON, but I'm wondering if it's worth keeping my 4K disc if the Criterion blu-ray is good.
I will take a 1080p disc over a 4k stream any day of the week. The image comparisons shown show the issue quite clearly. The 4k stream image appears washed out when compared to the 1080p disc.
'washed out' means that is compressed more than it must, so you're right!!! i''ll wait in the future for 8k media, as it will probably end the physical media movies!!!
Much preferred Casino to this.
@@jnagarya519 I like Donnie Brasco, but wouldn't put it in the same league as Goodfellas or Casino.
I think Donnie brasco has achieved classic status but Casino is above it and goodfellas is a masterpiece.
Casino is one of his worst imo
Was lucky enough to see it in theaters. Definitely does not felt like a long film
I personally think its better than Casino and Goodfellas. Allways liked Casino tad bit more than Goodfellas.
I put irishman below Goodfellas and Casino, I think it was a little too slow at some places!
Thanks for the review! Will definitely pick this up!
I felt that way after i watched it the first time ,but liked it even more after watching it again, the Irishman
Love this channel. Enjoyed the movie, but BETTER then Casino??.your smoking that strong shit brotha!
Casino and The Irishman are like apples and oranges; both quality fruit but different flavors for sure.
None beat Goodfellas in my opinion
@@archiemcgrath1222 you are right on the money on that! I even think Taxi Driver is above the two as well, but that's just me
Worst film ever! Can I get that 5 hours of my life back? (Was it 5 hours? Seemed like it.)
For me atleast i see that Blu-ray is a bit brighter than the stream
I ordered the Blu-ray so im excited because i haven't gotten around to it
Great in depth review, but IMO 1. Goodfellas 2. Casino 3. The Irishman
Physical media all the way
The blu-ray actually looks better.
Lmao what kind of dumb-
@@zacplaysleague5868 Did you watch (and listen to) the video?
@@rosstee no I haven't seen the movie at all
@@zacplaysleague5868 I mean this UA-cam video, not the movie.
@@rosstee I did not watch the whole thing
The Criterion looks a little hot colorwise compared to the Netflix stream. The 4K has a bit more clarity and sharpness due to its higher resolution but not as much as I might have thought.
the disc looks better and if they released true 4k disc it will take a step up again.
Hopefully they use deepfakes over the VFX technology to get a more convincing young deniro too
@@hafizarashid7857 What an awful take. Hell no.
Great video quality and great movie. I always thought that casino was better than Goodfellas... just saying.
ok so It won't buffer on me so yeah I'd like the Blu-ray over a stream any day.
My opinion but Casino is so much better than the Irishman!
Have to agree, the disc looks better than the stream. Would love to see an actual 4k disc, but damn, they are really close on quality but it sure looks a bit better on the disc.
4:49
The Criterion has a warmer color scheme than Netflix. The colors stand out more.
The round table extra is on Netflix.
Good review, thanks Jeff. I'm surprised there's so many casino fans, I didn't realize it was that well liked. Interesting, I liked the Irishman alot more personally. Goodfellas is still the best. Glad criterion picked Irishman up, it deserves a good physical release. Hopefully more criterion Scorsese films in the future. Maybe Mean Streets or Raging Bull?
Thanks Jeff! Casino is a better movie imo. Like the Irishmen a lot tho.
I'm in the minority, liking Casino more than Goodfellas
_Both_ are masterpieces, in my mind, but Casino is _endlessly_ rewatchable whereas The Irishman takes a commitment to watch (not because of length, but the _kind_ of movie it is). 🤷♂️
Lets just agree, casino, irishman, the departed, good fellas, all great movies by Scorsese, HEAT also one of my faves too. Casino in 4k looked awesome, but goodfellas, way to grainy for me,my bluray looks better than 4k. Irishman occasionally has a lil grain, but overall fantastic looking moving,i believe shot off a 2k master.
@@wesfishcare Me too I prefer Casino more that Goodfellas, not that Goodfellas is a bad movie, it's a masterpiece, but I prefer Casino
I liked the movie, and I'm not even knocking the Criterion, but I though the stream was pretty meh looking.
I think they will be going to 4K on their streaming service first and if that does well enough for them they will do 4K discs. Really hope it happens, we don’t need everything either! Just give us some of the best sellers or something!
Nope. They use Vimeo to run their streaming service and apparently that’s not supporting 4K yet.
One huge difference. Most Netflix is still only Dolby Digital 5.1. That's from the days of DVD. Blurays are lightyears ahead in audio quality.
The colors and reflections look way better and different. I would buy the Blu-ray. I am just glad to have one physically.
The physical will beat streaming
I can see that the Criterion video has a bit more crisp, cleaner color to it and just looks a bit more of high quality. But I personally bought the Criterion edition of this already free to stream film purely for the film history / physical media enjoyment of it. Streaming great films just isn't as fun as owning them.
Even a Blu-ray Disc looks better than a 4K stream. Streaming sucks.
#physicalmediaforever
@Jay tech addict Homekit Yeah, which shows how much better quality 4K discs offer than any type of stream.
I saw a difference. The criterion pops more. Just a better picture overall. Granted I'm looking at this from UA-cam and in 1080p. But if I can see the difference here. I'm pretty sure the actual disc displays better.
But I've been watching The Good Place on blu-ray and have to say it's much better in disc than streamed.
Physical versions are just better.
Unfortunately, this UA-cam stream lacks HDR & WCG. So you can't make the side by side comparison yourself from this video. Although it's rare for UA-cam videos to include HDR, it can be done (e.g. The HDR Channel, with HDR10).
Thanks for the review....just picked this up from Criterion. I watched this on Netflix last year. I agree with your take on the film ranking in terms of other Scorsese films - definitely not as good as Goodfellas (what film is) but better than other films like Casino. Great video
The criterion version looks better to me.
Criterion looks better to me 🤷🏽♂️
Also , will you be reviewing the 4K release of Dawn of the Dead ?
The Irishman is an excellent addition to Scorsese's vaunted mob and gangster flicks, but ... better than Casino? Don't think so, Home.
The film did get a theatrical release, albeit it limited, my local cinema had a few showings of it and I did go on opening night; great film. Do yourself a favor and watch it in Black & White, way better this way; I’ve been doing this to many modern classics and it’s gorgeous. I will buy the Blu-ray through your link because I like your channel; keep up the good work.
I’m probably in the minority amongst males but I don’t really care for the bulk of mafia movies that contain BRUTAL violence. For example, I didn’t care for The Departed. The Godfather was never a favorite film of mine but I’ve watched it a couple of times. Part II was my favorite. Casino was not something I’d watch again due to that brutal BURIAL scene where Pesci gets clubbed with a baseball bat and buried with dirt. The Irishman seemed to be mild and different and probably one of the better mobster films.
I’m more of a Heat kinda guy.
Watch City of God
There is no 5.1 audio track on this. Only Atmos. If you have a non Atmos set up, like me, you'll have wasted your money. Audio comes out of all speakers, voices not through centre, etc.
It's crap I wasted £26
Thanks Jeff for another great review and comparison, I haven't seen the irishmen but I'm definitely going to pick up the Criterion collection bluray! I've heard mixed reviews but I'm pretty sure it's going to be real good because of the great actors and Martin Scorsese!
If Criterion had bothered to put this 4K remastered movie on a 4K disc, you'd get an advantage over Bluray: higher bit rate / more data; HDR (Dolby Vision, included as well); and wide color gamut. 4K UHD discs tend to have a better Dolby Vision encode / more info (FEL). Tragically, Criterion, who is supposed to be for videophiles, cheaped out once again. Wish they had more boutique competition in the U.S. Hopefully, European labels will put out a 4K version on disc. Even Tammy and the T-Rex is out on 4K disc!
With criterion's outrageous prices they should include a 4K disc! Now with 4K becoming more mainstream. I mean if they think their audience isn't ready for it then just keep a Blu-ray in there. but to me you can't ask $40 for a movie but then try to cut costs by not offering a 4K disc in this day and age. I wouldn't mind if their movies were $20.
criterion is not a videophile company. they make releases for film lovers, people who watch the movie for the movie, not for the video quality of the movie. yes they do film restorations but they are only to serve justice to the art of the film.
@@taraz02 The mission statement on their own internet site boldly and misleadingly claims to achieve the highest TECHNICAL QUALITY: "the Criterion Collection has been dedicated to publishing important classic and contemporary films from around the world in editions that offer the highest technical quality and award-winning, original supplements."
Irishman had/have one the worst DOLBY ATMOS mixes ever without one single overhead effect what a waste of sound design
I love your reviews but couldn't disagree more this time. I saw this in a theater in a limited run the week it came out last year and also on Netflix, I actually think this Blu-ray is the best way to watch it. I thought the overall picture detail was better than the stream, very sharp and crisp with a little better/brighter color balance. To be honest, I hate how dark all the 4K stuff is on Netflix. It looks like they intentionally take the brightness and just turn it way down on everything 4K. Ozark was so dark I could hardly see what was going on, I bet that would look better on a disc. I do agree though that this shoulda/woulda/coulda been a 4K release.
There is a slight difference in color, but its not really that big of a difference. I'd say it looks more like Dolby Vision vs HDR difference.
The Irishman is NOT BETTER than Casino!
For him it is and that's his opinion :) But I agree with you casino is better 👍 Btw this movie cost about 55$ in my country and they wonder why people import... 😑
Agreed, but I prefer it to Goodfellas
it's not but I'm jit comparing it to it. Irishman is more about the acting. The acting is amazing though out entire film which holds up the movie.
concur
Thank you! 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Better then Casino, are you ill? The irishman is way too long like 90 mins too long it’s one of the worst if not the worst movie MS made.
Great content brother, I'm starting my own collection as well great pick up. Got mine subscribe bro👍
What do you think about Apple TV+ , comparison to Netflix?
the blu-ray looks better
Based off those screenshots the 4k stream looks very washed out with grey looking blacks.
The movie was shown at a handful of cinemas in New York and Los Angeles in order to be a contender for the Academy Awards. It was nominated for 10 Oscars that year.
True. Still crazy that’s a rule when streaming content has come so far.
@@JeffRauseo Yeah, I understand both sides though. We're talking about the evolution of an industry that hasn't changed too much in its processes in over 100 years. Sure technology has improved and there have been new techniques for cinema, but it has mainly stayed the same. It's hard to get people to change their viewpoints on something like this. Especially when those people have been working in the industry for 50+ years. It's promising seeing someone to the caliber of Scorsese making art on a streaming platform. Will other greats like Nolan and Spielberg follow? It's doubtful for Nolan, but you never know. People can always change their perspectives and opinions as time goes on. The next few years will definitely be interesting, to say the least for American Cinema!
Not as good as goodfellas ? Are you kidding me ? It leaps and bounds better
I just bought this too
I wish The Highwaymen would get a 4k release.
Right away, it seemed that the criterion Blu Ray has deeper colors and it’s just more visually appealing.
blu ray colors look brighter
Wondering if you know why they didn’t release a 4K version and just bluray?
I wish Criterion would go to 4K. That would be great. Also I saw The Irishman in the theater up in Portland, OR. I felt very lucky. They had it playing in the theater about a month before the Netflix release. Very good film.
Criterion listened to you!
I thought all the screen grabs of the Blu-Ray looked better than the Netflix. Was the light the same in the room when you took those pics?
I don't stream anything on my projector, it's disc or nothing
I say the same thing if I suspect my wife can read my internet posts....#youporn
I bought it. I thought the film looked amazing picture quality. I'm very Very happy with the Barn's n noble release.
Does this come with regular Blu-ray aswell?
as a huge Scorsese fan the extras on the disc will beat the free stream and with the recent half of criterion sale got it for 20 bucks
Avoid Dolby vision, its to dim, and you cant adjust it, on your tv, avoid.
I think the criterion is so much better! The Netflix version was so dark and grey on my TV.
Interesting stuff and it also doesn’t say much for upgrading from Blu-ray to 4K in general as most people would probably not notice any difference 🤷🏼♂️
Wow, I just added the Irishman to my amazon cart (it's on sale surprisingly) and your review popped up. Thanks for your insights as usual, man!
Wait, it doesn't have the commentary track?
Thanks for the detailed review... totally agree with Atmos on a disc sounding better as offers less compression.
does your TV upscale the Blu Ray to 4K ? That would explain why the difference is so little ... I mean it is a stream so there is a quality loss .... 4K blu Rays have a Bit rate of 130 Mbit/s to 160 Mbit/s
Yes it would upscale that’s a good point. That would be part of it. But I guess it goes to show how a well mastered 4K transfer on Bluray can look damn good on a 4K TV
So a regular blu ray can look better than a 4k stream that is impressive
Voice rhythm is very good 👍 to hear 👍
The blu ray looks better😂
criterion looks alot better than the 4k
Is it possible to buy "The Irishman" on digital media platforms like Amazon or Apple TV?
Nope. Only available through Netflix, or physical copy via Criterion.
I think one of the main reasons 4K streams can sometimes even look a bit worse than a 1080p disc: more resolution is heavily undermined when it just ends up being compressed so much.
The problem is how much longer will that be the case? In a decade the Blu Ray of this movie will likely look a bit worse. I don’t understand how Criterion can charge so much yet not bother with a future proof 4K disc?
Great review Jeff but we do all respect man better than Casino! Casino ist Martin Scorsese best movie, his second best is Goodfellas, Casino was/still is Martin Scorseses last best Film since 1994/5 period
3:37
You're contradicting yourself, again. You claimed the 4K of Pan's Labyrinth wasn't as good as the Criterion Blu-ray. Not that you couldn't tell the difference...
Lance - I appreciate you being a channel historian and referencing a review I did over a year ago. I was simply referencing that review as an example of others I’ve done in the past like this.
@@JeffRauseo You got it, dude! Seriously, though, Pan's Labyrinth is one of my all-time favorite movies and my reference was because of this, basically; I remember your year ago review because of my love for this movie. I chose not to get the 4K because I already had the Criterion, and saved some money because of your recommendation. I thank you for that. I wanted you to remember your review as well!

Can't wait to pick this up, thanks for the review bro!!
Criterion looked brighter in some spots
The netflix color looks really washed out compared to the bluray.
Based on those shots, I think the Netflix looks cooler and more natural. The Criterion looks too warm to me.
Fraud!!!
