the great Don Criqui on play by play. Always enjoyed his work. the start of a magical season for Denver that fell just short of greatness. just started watching...that Elway bullet to Vance Johnson was a thing of beauty. And the throw to Watson...took something off it and placed it perfectly. Just dropped it in
100% agree. I'd take Criqui over any of the current play by play guys. One thing I really notice watching these older games is that there is nothing on the screen during the plays. The announcers don't take anything for granted and paint a good mental picture of the down and distance as well as the play. Now they have a full HUD that shows everything and the announcers babble about everything under the sun and will not tell you anything regarding down/distance/field position time etc. Sometimes people get up and go to the kitchen or bathroom and the current clowns calling the games won't throw you a friggen bone.
I feel like I'm watching techmo bowl with these names. I used to go to the games in LA with all my Broncos gear on. This was the year I became a Bronco fan. #milehighgang
This was the year between the schedule makers and the officials the league finally saw to it that the days of the Raiders being a great team in LA were over..they should’ve just stayed home and rested in 86 and got ready for 87
Raiders started off 0-3 in 86 (all tough losses of course) only to win 8 out their next 9 and then go on a 4 game losing streak to end the year. If you’re an old school Raider fan, you’ll just always wonder how many Super Bowls they would’ve went to in the 80’s if they had a decent QB after Plunkett. Marc Wilson was quite simply, horrible. They were absolutely loaded with talent everywhere but the QB position. For how much good Al did for this organization, matching the USFL offer to Wilson was one of his biggest mistakes.
You’re right there, but read up on how they had a trade worked out with the Colts back in 1983 when they drafted John Elway who did not want to play for them. The Colts accepted a trade from them that also included the Bears, it was a 3 team trade with draft picks and existing players involved . The Raiders were gonna get Elway, but the NFL and the noted Raider/Al Davis hater himself, Pete Rozelle stepped in and nixed the trade. Could you imagine the Raiders with John Elway? It was close to happening and God know how many Super Bowls the Raiders win with him.
Marino wasn’t even on their radar when he came to them with their pick in the draft according to Ron Wolf. They too believed the rumors going around about him and drugs while also believing in the utterly horrible Marc Wilson. It bothers the hell out of me they never returned to the SB after 83 after being so loaded with talent with young players and vets in their prime. QB play and a reluctance to adapt to the changing times with the way teams were adapting to the west coast offense killed the Raiders. Most of the time when the Raiders lost in the 80’s, it more them beating themselves than their opponent beating them. They were one of the last teams to even use the shotgun and still had their QB’s taking seven step drops. Shanahan tried changing it and Al didn’t have the patience and all that did was set them back in the long run.
I remember this game. This is the game where the refs called pass interference on the Raiders in the end zone on a pass way over the receiver's head. They scored on a 1 yard rush the next play. This was a real heartbreaker.
karma for all the cheap hits. If there had been replay in '77 you might have won and gone to the SB. You probably beat Dallas because while Tom Glassic and Andy Maurer had a hard time with Randy White and Harvey Martin, Gene Upshaw and Art Shell would probably wld do better.
THIS is an awesome game! I already looked it up so you can avoid doing that and spoiling the result, 70+ combined points YET, 6 sacks so its got it all, except not a lot of rushing yards... which is usually why I want to watch 80's games...The low comp rates, the route combinations are basic ; the impossibility of seeing what coverage the D is in, makes low rush yard games not as fun for me. Now I have to wait a week to forget the result.
I remember watching the HBO highlights of this game narrated by Harry K... This season was the beginning of the end for the Raiders... The Curse of Mike Shanahan was soon to follow...still not broken...maybe they’ll break it in Vegas.
Im all about modern NFL, but I'll never stop loving 300+ combined rush yard games. CFB Spread to Run offenses like Auburn (when theyre good), Ohio State, Alabama when Jalen Hurts was there; Oklahoma sometimes, and even the Iformation teams of the SEC and B1G they'll get to 400+ rush yards combined, and that's endlessly rewatchable to me.
I had season tickets in '86 and was sitting in the corner of the end zone. What a great year and time to be a Bronco fan that year. That stadium was like being at an SEC football game. Loud and full of energy.
great game, thanks, sorry you will have these games, 10/26/1986 Los Angeles Raiders @ Houston Oilers . 11/16/1986 Cleveland Browns @ Los Angeles Raiders, please
These teams hated each other back then. (Still do, but not like in the 80s.) Sucks that Elway had average, at best, receivers. Imagine Elway playing a career with the teams Montana or Brady enjoyed. He'd own every record.
The Denver Zephyrs (AAA Cincinnati Reds affiliate at the time) played their home games at Mile High Stadium. Mile High was an underrated baseball stadium.
@@shanetrimble9265 Actually he was not that good in this game either....he only played one good game his entire sickening career ....the Sunday night game against Dallas oct.23, 1983
These games get me more pumped up than todays NFL

What a pleasure to listen to Two professionals, and Don, who doesn't scream at every play over 5 yards.

That's my favorite Raider defensive... every player was bad ass 👍🏽🏈
I always liked this divisional rivalry growing up watching football in the 80’s and 90’s with Elway
Don Criqui, the legend!

They had a chance to draft Dan Marino. Imagine if they would’ve drafted him. They would’ve probably won a few more Super Bowls and never left LA.

@@greengrass1072 yes I knew about that. My point was that Marino was there for the taking and there was nothing the league could do about it.

@@greengrass1072 SINCE WHEN DID THAT MATTER TO THE RAIDERS THEY HAD PLAYERS DOING WORSE THINGS THAN SMOKING WEEEEEEEEEEEEEED!!
On the same day, Jim Kelly began his Buffalo Bills career VS the Jets at the same time as Oakland-Denver.
I have to say Al Davis was wrong about Marc Wilson.
Los Angeles-Denver
57:05 John Elway- Elite WR Speed
It's hard to notice, but you can see how Elway gets even faster as the DB closes in, he gets a burst of speed. Incredible to watch.
Great game, great era, the quality of the NFL isn't the same now a days.... what happened.
The Broncos need to go back to those uniforms and logo and get rid of that crap there wairing now

Elway throwing across his body on the move like it’s not a big deal.
Strongest arm ever. Put Elway on Montana's Niners, or Aikman's Cowboys, or Brady's Patriots and his numbers would be untouchable.
homerun ball from Elway, gorgeous throw

Totally different game in some ways. More physical

Not with McDaniels
funny enough, Coach Shanahan was the OC for the Broncos in this game!
@@rovolutionary yes. He went to all five Elway super bowls. Days after the Raiders fired him in 1989, he returned to the Broncos as their QB coach.

John Elway and I share birthday June 28 he was born 1960 and I was born 1970 both are from Los Angeles John San Fernando Valley me Hawthorne .
Late hit by Vann? The beginning of the end for ball hawk DB's!
As a 11 year old I wanted to play for Denver or Dallas
the luck had run out on talent and qb luck injurys helped the luck/talent 80 83 jp
Can someone explain why there's a baseball diamond at Mile High? The Colorado Rockies MLB franchise was still 9 years away in '86.
Minor league baseball team. Denver Bears I believe.

Don Criqui not happy about foreigners winning in tennis.
Lz V I caught that but wasn't sure if he just wasn't enthused by tennis overall. Classic Criqui comment though.
Lendl was hated in US
29:40 No fair-catch signal, fumbles the ball in the end zone. ...how is this NOT a safety ?
I mean, how the referee blows the whistle as a dead play instead of letting it roll ?
