Chewing happens in a blink of an eye. My African Grey was on the backseat, in a travelcage, suddenly silent and then with a very happy voice a "peekaboo", knowing something was very off, I stopped the car at a safe place and found him with his head out of the cage. The travel was about 15 minutes.
Comedic effect 10/10
The effort he made just to turn this into a game of peekaboo...I love parrots, they just have their own mind

Something similar happened with my yellow nape amazon. My parents were on a road trip to take my bird to their house to stay while I was in hospital, and they had their mini dachshund in her bed on the floor of the backseat of the car and my parrot in his travel cage belted on the back seat. When they stopped for a relief break, they found that my bird had let himself out of the cage and was in the dog's bed with the dog cuddling and preening the dogs ears! Luckily they were both very chill animals and became best buddies, but it could have ended up tragically! Puppy and birdie were great friends until puppy passed. Birdie has always been a very sweet animal, and LOVES all little dogs! We were very lucky! Now I use cara in ers to secure his carrier!
I work as ground crew at Perth Airport in Western Australia. We loaded a Blue & Gold Macaw on one of our flights a few days ago. Im a fan of the channel and love birds but due to life I dont own one however having followed for a while it was great putting into practice things Ive picked up from you guys to help with handling the cage and being able to approach without completely freaking out the bird. The power pause worked wonders approaching the cage for the first time :)

Do you think it's safe to place the bird in the airlines cargo? I couldn't find any airlines that allows cockatiel in the cabin.

We moved to Germany from the US with our 2 lovebirds when I was about 10. Boy, that was an experience! We made sure to have all the papers and follow all the rules, but lo and behold, of course once we arrived, they told us we were missing a document. This paper was not mentioned anywhere (and back then the internet wasn't what it is now) and since we didn't have it, they wanted to quarantine our birds at the airport for 30days. As I kid, I was sure our extremely social birds would die of loneliness. After spending the entire day at the cargo part of the airport, we were finally able to take our birds home, because they were sorry for the little kid who was crying because she thought her parrots would die in quarantine =D We were SO lucky the people there had a heart at the end! One of the birds turned 16 a few weeks ago and the other sadly died of a tumor a couple of years ago.
heyy i know this is a really late comment, but did anything bad happen to the lovebirds during the flight? i'm moving to another country with my four year old lovebird soon so i was wondering if nothing bad will happen to him
@@seth5491 Hi, they were totally fine! Just make sure you have all your papers so they don't need to be quarantined. I'm not sure how good quarantine at the airport would be for them. The 16 year old I mentioned in my last comment sadly died 2 weeks ago and would have been 17 today (your comment is quite the coincidence), so he had a long and happy life. The flight definitely didn't hurt him ;) And we moved in 2007, so I'm sure things have only gotten better since then. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

When you talked about Linus, your cockatoo, having pieces of luggage and clothing in the carrier, I laughed. It sounds like something from a Seinfeld episode.
I was going to mention Delta will only ship a bird if the temperatures are between 40F and 80F. If either take off or landing isn't in this range they will cancel.

When I got my last crimson bellied conure, we got her at the cargo place and her water was frozen. I was furious because I knew my little girl was freezing on her flight. She was alive but i was still mad so be careful
If it was cold enough to freeze her water it was cold enough to kill her I’ve told my partner a lot that if we ever have to fly it’s gonna be over seas and we better be moving.

I'm so sorry that happened to you :( This is why I will NEVER put my lovebird in cargo if I need to travel via flight. I don't trust airlines at all.
I also don't trust the airlines but they mostly do not agree to take a bird on board. And india is the most difficult country to bring a pet in

And yeah, Delta was great! Security was easy too, I asked for a room and they had me take him out, the TSA officer just looked in the carrier and that was it! I used the ColorDay clear mailbox looking carrier, so it didn’t need the X-ray. It also fit perfectly under the seat!! Oh, and window seats have MUCH SMALLER underseat area than isles!!!

We only was Delta. In Jacksonville cargo the staff is amazing. I think it helps if you are using an airport near a major zoo they have "just seen it all". That being said we almost always transport our guys by ground. Great video.
This is awesome!!! Wish it was posted 3 days ago... 😂 kidding!! But this is SOO helpful! If it’s your first time, it’s crazy stressful, worried something will go wrong, so this will definitely calm some nerves! Only thing I learned is Delta changed their rules, they no longer allow birds as ESA’s 😢When flying, I paid the pet fee, but no one actually knew I had a bird with me, the flight attendants didn’t even look twice at the carrier on the seat next to me! But I would be too scared to try to try and skip, with my luck that would be the one time they notice! And yeah, pet fee is ridiculous, it’s $125 each way, so pretty much the price of a ticket. There were 2 screaming lap babies that screamed the whooole flight while my guy was quiet and calm, slept most of the way!
Katherine Ellsworth I used the carrier that Jamie featured in another video, I think it’s called traveling with birds but I’ll double check. It looks like a clear mailbox and fit my grey perfectly!
Katherine Ellsworth this is the carrier I used, I got the medium size and it fit him, and fit airline requirements. They make a larger size also but it won’t fit on a plane. I fly Delta with my bird all the time as carry-on. The fee does suck but it is what is. I use celltei airline carriers, all the plastic carriers have been terrible.
My personal opinion I've heard way too many horror stories of people shipping their animal in cargo it has to be carry-on or nothing for me
Yep, only reason I'm not moving countries right now is pets & the idea of all the things that could go wrong flying & quarantining them terrify me
I've never met someone who has had bad experiences shipping animals on pet-safe aircrafts, so I'm curious to know what you have heard from people. Pets can't go into cargo holds that are not pressurized like in the cabin of an aircraft. Not all cargo containers pressurize their cargo holds, therefore not all aircraft are fit to carry live creatures. I've received multiple pets shipped by plane and have never had a bad experience but it's important to know the regulations on the airline you ship with and if the sending and receiving location are in a safe temperature zone for whatever it is that is being sent.

@@wwaxwork same - I want to move from Australia to family in Poland but I cannot fathom having my GCC put in cargo and would only have him as carry on and even then I am not sure how he would handle the first 14hr flight to Doha airport....he is the only reason for me staying in Australia at the moment

That settles it, I am /never/ taking my birds on an airplane and I am sooo not going to move to another state XD I am way to anxious to let my birds be shipped, I can't even go one car ride without talking back and forth with my birds the entire time.

I've been traveling with my Quaker for almost 15 years now. First 10 I was a travel nurse and flew a LOT and I quickly learned what Dave has talked about in the video, will say though, I have had MANY more and bigger issues with TSA than any of the airlines combined. On one occasion I thought I was going to end up arrested. 😬 Did you know that the TSA can NOT refuse a private screening request? Until that incident, neither did I.
We travel with the very first cage Dave showed, I have added a perch, bowls and spots to hang toys.
I have had little to no issues with Alaska Airlines and now that they have expanded to a lot more cities, if my trip is domestic, I fly them exclusively.

@@anaghadalvi9966 sorry, I have not traveled internationally with him. Would definitely look into the needed paperwork to bring him into the US. I was going to be driving from the lower 48, through Canada and into Alaska. I had to do paperwork for both Canada and reentry into the US and it had to be done roughly 2 months before the trip. I didnt have 2 months notice prior to the trip, so, he stayed with my parents☹

I learned how many employees of the airlines training and knowledge is lacking many years ago! Also their power trip bs. It is absurd that I have to pay (last I flew w my 4lb dog) $125 ONEWAY for her to be up under the seat in front of me. Encountered some that were all knowing.....in what I have no clue. Tried to make up their own rules ect. I always have the rules in hand as well so there isn't an issue with the regulations. Haha no matter how early I am I still end up 99% of the time frustrated w them lol but as you I prefer delta
Yeah. As Dave mentioned, the trick is to print out the rules since their training isn’t always up to par, Ive found
Check specific airline in-cabin regulations! Most allow birds in carriers as carry-on in the cabin as Dave said....except COCKATOOS!!! Can you imagine an umbrella cockatoo on a straight flight from LA to New York!?!?
LOL!! I was thinking about that as Dave mentioned screaming children. My U2 would give everyone a run for their money....or everyone would hear "Hello...hello?....HEllooooo??....HELLO!!!!....Peek a boo!!!..." for hours 🤣🤣🤣

In my particular situation, I have not traveled since becoming a macaw owner & trainer.
However, I has generated concern that has rumbled in my head for awhile. But during COVID, I didn't reach out to learn about and play for different story line.

Yes, my cockatiel did that when I first got her. She would also do it if I took her in the shower and if I walked down the stairs with her. I fixed it In about a month. I would turn her to face me and walk forward give her a treat when I got to the other side of the room. I slowly started to turn her to face forward (still walking slow). Then a slowly start walking faster but not to the point where there would be wind. Then I sat down in front of a box fan and put it on the lowest setting. Giving her a treat and turning the fan to medium give her a treat then I stood up with the fan still on her. Once she was good with that I would walk across the room faster with a bit more wind. I would work with her on this about once a day skipping some days. Hope that helped! 💕
I have shipped several dogs and I must say, this video is spot on! You cover just about everything that can and often will occur. And the personel... Yeah. They are like that all around the world, it seems 🙈😅
So...Great topic! However, I do not ship without a person, preferably myself, on that very plane. I find it is just too risky. Why?
Well, I got stuck with a 12 week old puppy at Heathrow during a bomb threat. And was not allowed out of the building for over 24 hours. Nor were we allowed onto any airplane, of course. If I had not been inside the building with the pup, she would have gone missing in that chaos. Undoubtedly. Not only without food and water, but totally alone for way too long. Because no one new was allowed to enter the building during the bomb search either.
So, always prepare for worst case scenario. And carry food along, for both you and your pet, to make it for at least two more days, if you get stuck.
Another good thing to do if you have a specific vet that you go to, is to ask if they would be ok with you putting their name and phone number on the cage. Because they have the full history of that animal. And if it gets sick, do not presume that the staff will be able to reach you at all times. So if needed, they can then call your vet instead. Or someone else that knows your pet very well, for that matter.

Yet another example of the lack of common sense in today’s world at large. I hate flying on airlines as a human, for other reasons. My little fella likes being in the car, so I’d prefer to go that route. Less stressful for both of us, even with the lack of common sense on the road. But thank you for the tips. I am going on my first airline travel with my African Grey, and I've been loosing sleep about my parrot getting stressed, me forgetting something crucial etc. So this video really helped. Small tip: when I researched airlines in Europe who accept "pets" in actuality, a lot of them meant ONLY cats and dogs. So double check what they mean

Thanks for this video. After I watched it I’ve decided to drive across 3 state with my bird instead of flying. I have to go visit a relative who just announced that she has terminal cancer, and I can’t leave my bird (who is a shoulder bird) while I go out of town to visit her. So I’m going on a road trip with my bird I guess! It will be an adventure. Sounds less horrible than trying to fly and putting him in cargo and potentially losing him. Thanks again

Also I use to think the attach and twist bowls were cool but Zuko also learned how to remove them and learned that the oval part is what keeps them in there so he snaps the edges 😭

The thing is im just preparing for the future here cause im planing to get a bird in the next years and im most likely gonna be in another country for my education and i know that i will have to move back to my home country with the bird ✌🏻🥲
My macaw was shipped through Delta cargo just over a Month ago. At that time, they did not allow food or water bowls inside the carrier, so I'm confused about your content. The shipper used pine chips on the bottom, and placed food within. However, the Macaw was not allowed any water. Once she arrived, I had to cut the screen, zip ties and duct tape, just to provide water, as we had a 2 hour drive home.
What about toys? Would you ever put maybe a smallish soft (so they don’t get whacked in the face with wood or something) preening or foraging type toy in there?

How do I bring a Green cheek conure on a flight from South Carolina to Sacramento? My bird is still a baby and squawks mainly for attention and when she’s scared she repeatedly squawks loudly until I calm her down. I really don’t wanna put her in cargo and my parent might not last 3-4 days in a car. We also have an adult male bearded dragon, can we take them both as a carry on? We might fly Delta.

Airlines are on such a power trip now, I definitely am glad you posted this before I flew with my bird. I’ll be prepared to just say no, I’m not flying at all unless I can take him with me inside as carry-on and no, I won’t check him in as cargo. Ever. This video really helps! I have wondered how I would travel with my bird etc. But if a bird gets stressed, how one make it better for the bird etc.?
It's best to desensitize the bird to the carrier first so they will be less stressed. If you go by car, short drives before your big trip are great, and a favorite toy secured to the side of the carrier is great. (My budgie destroyed a whole toy on a 14 hour drive, and destriyed another one on the way back lol)
My lovebird is use to a carrier by car☺️ and his very relaxed with that and everything. But by air its a different story?

If I would ever immigrate and ( still have ) a bird i will take the schip that few days don't matter..for the short Summers holidays i leave the bird at home with either people i know take care of it or special bird day care place which costs a few bucks
I wanted to drive with my macaw from Ontario canada to the U.S.. problem isint on the canadien side but the us i was told i need to pay a registard vet to meet me at customs us crossing for paper clearance when i go back to Ontario re meet up with that vet for blood sample and quarinteen document for avian departing the us. Fees we're almost 500bucks. Find it quite ridicules for just a 1 week trip any suggestions internationally?
3 months since I’ve seen my bird. I’m in Europe, moved from US and due to COVID travel has been very difficult and the offices for paperwork aren’t working right now
