I constantly tell my gcc she's a good bird and so gentle when she's with me. But when she indicates it's time for her to go back to her cage, she'll start biting but once she's on, she clenches my finger with one foot - she *has* to have one more bite.

My bird used to bite when I asked for a step up. What I started doing was holding my hand far enough that she couldn't bite it, and wait for her to show me that she intends on stepping up (usually a foot reaching forward). She also would bite my hand while I was holding her if she wanted to go down. I started paying more attention to her subtle cues that she wanted to go down, and if she resorted to biting without showing any cues, I would wait for her to stop before putting her down. She very quickly learned that biting isn't the way to communicate her wants, and so she now leans towards where she wants to be put down when she's done with me.

How did you get your severe to eat the chop? I am dealing with a 4 year old severe macaw that I got 3 weeks ago, he was apparently on a crappy diet. I can't get him to eat much of anything besides nuts. I have tried A LOT. I continue to give him chop, even have tried fruit. I bought the seasonal feeding system but there aren't many tips in there for diet conversion. So I could make it all up, but it's getting him to eat it. He bit me this evening when I was trying to hand him a mango. I immediately put him back in his cage. He's lucky I am hard headed. I won't give up on him. I think his big issue is DIET. I can't even clicker train him at this point because I have no treat value.

I found that with smaller parrots and parrakeets (Its all I have) , if I am copping a bite, I do NOT pull away, as hard as that is to do. Rather, I push into the bite. This achieves two things for me. The bird does not get rid of me WITH the bite (I'm not stupid, I do stop whatever it is, but I do not allow the bite to be successful in the birds mind). And by pushing into it, the bird HAS to let go. They find it uncomfortable and it has been my experience that - for untamed birds and established biters - they tend to dislike that and stop doing it because it does not work

I "tamed" 3 totally untangled budgies in one week and didn't get bit once using the same tips you talk about here.
I honestly started out wondering how I would avoid getting bitten and immediately thought of your words that birds bite when they feel like they have no other way to communicate what they want.
My solution: let them free in my house with every possible way of getting away from me. Not only did this jump start their flight training by allowing them to practice/learn flying skills, but it means that if I push too hard there's no need to bite because they ALWAYS have the option to fly away.
It has been one week since I got them, changed them over to chop instead of seed, and now they fly to me willingly (for some spray millet!) instead of flying away.
Since it's hard to hide spray millet around, I committed to wearing my treat pouch around the house ALL THE TIME for a week so I could quickly reward movement toward me and it has 100% been worth it.

I tell them pick a small area like a bathroom and bird proof it before releasing them and then just sit in there talking to them for a while. Once fear is gone, they can step up.

The biggest myth I read on EVERY UA-cam training is that budgies only bite because they’re afraid. Mine would literally fly over to me to bite me when he was bored or molting. He was not scared but I was reinforcing the biting following advice he needed reassurance aka reinforcing biting. Then I followed my own gut and figure it out and changed his patterns slightly and would not let him on me when he’d show signs he was going to bite. He broke the pattern for sure.

    • @thefrankieandpowpowshow4861
      @thefrankieandpowpowshow4861 2 роки тому +1

My budgie bites me for the fun of it. He loves to sit on my hand in his cage and play with his toys from a different angle: Bite the toy, bit the toy, bite the toy, turn and bite the hand, bite the toy, bite the hand harder, ooh that was fun and squishy - bite, bite BITE. I take my hand away - he's mad at me taking my hand away, so he bites and holds on. Or he lands on my head and doesn't to come down (his preening gets very rough - he would tear off my eyebrow or eyelashes if I left him up there), so he bites my hand when I ask him to step up. Or I will treat him for good behavior, then he jumps on me and bites when I take the treat away. "I am boss! Give me treats or else!" Some days I think we're making great progress, but the next day he'll be psycho biting bird again. *sigh* My other budgie is so sweet and gentle.

I find it depends on you relationship with the bird and the bird's personality. For example, if the bird likes you, reacting by leaving the room will be a negative reinforcer. But if it hates you, leaving the room will be positive. And some birds, if they get no reaction at all, will just double down and bite harder and harder. While that may not be a huge issue with conures and the like, with macaws and toos, that can become dangerous to the point of broken bones.

@@franchescamadden442 pigeons are not like parrots. While yes, some training is the same, diet is wildly different (pigeons are strict seed and grain eaters, and cannot digest plant matter). Pigeons are also not like parrots in their social behaviors, and behavior varies a LOT by gender. Male attract female by displays of physical strength, and are promiscuous (though they bond with one bird as their "wife" and will raise any peeps she produces, whether it's from him or a different male). Male pigeons very very rarely want any kind of contact like cuddling, since pigeon makes do not allow anyone but their wife to preen them. Males will be aggressive to anyone that they have not chosen as their wife (and they WILL chose someone), no matter training, because thats how males show female that they are worthy mates. Females are more cuddly, and more likely to be social with multiple people, since they mate with multiple males, and do not much have to worry about impressing their husband. They will lay a clutch of two eggs and brood them. Pigeons and parrots are very very different and you cannot expect one to act like the other.

Love your videos. Practical information presented in an accessible and easily understandable way. Lots of excellent advice. As parrot parents it really is essential for us to understand the behaviour, body language and psychology of our little friends. Experts say that parrots don’t respond to punishment or discipline so the best way to train them is to ignore bad behaviour and reward them when they behave well. As you so rightly say: Remember and reward good behaviour! Also I love that you mentioned the importance of health - I found out the hard way that parrots bite when they’re in pain. I had a beautiful little girl Green Cheek Conure who was 4yo and had always been an absolute angel but suddenly started biting me so hard that she’d draw blood (which was totally uncharacteristic behaviour). I took her to the vet and discovered that she had an inoperable brain tumour that would’ve been causing her a great deal of physical pain - which was apparently the reason she was biting. She had no other way to let me know she was in pain. Admittedly that’s an extreme case, but I think it’s important to consider a bird’s baseline health when trying to work out why they might be biting.

I just adopted 2 congo african greys from a really bad situation. One is 20 years old, she's been plucking for 10 years from what I'm told, the other one is 17 years old & he is very aggressive. They've been locked in their cages their entire lives, on an all seed diet.. I've had them for for 5 days. Introducing them to organic produce & been making mash. I let them out of their cages & they are willing. They stay on their cage doors (2 separate cages) I know I have a LOOONG road to build trust. The female doesn't show aggressive behavior, but doesn't want anything hands on besides taking treats gently from my hand. The male that is 17 is extreme aggressive & is out to bite me every moment he has. He's very territorial & full of anxiety. I'm hoping their diet change (I ordered 5 different pellets that were highly recommended to slowly covert off of seed) & out of cage interaction helps. I feel a little discouraged & overwhelmed, but I'm committed for life.
Can you do a video on gaining trust from an abused older parrot? Maybe more would be willing to adopt rehomed birds in need. Thank you for this! ❤❤

Man I was hoping this video would help me but I didn't get any answers that fit my situation. My birds bites my hands constantly.. she wants to be on me but she attacks my hands. This is not my 1st bird but she is the only bird I've had who does this. I hand raised her from a chick and she started nipping at about 7 weeks and hasn't stopped.. I've tried not reacting but it does nothing she will just continue to bite as long as I let her. I've tried saying no bite and removing her from me but then she flies straight back and starts again. I've tried saying no loudly and then she gets even madder and will attack more aggressively and even come at my face. I've tried putting her in time out after each bite and again I'm not seeing any progress. I keep working with her and hoping to fix this problem. Help me please 🥺

My guess is that she just gets fun out of biting and that the biting itself is reinforcing. She might find it fun, might be bored so whenever she bites you and gets a reaction then that’s her fun. Try giving her other things to bite and chew on, reinforce her for playing with other toys and biting those instead of you

@@twistytw I definitely think she enjoys biting.. she has tons of toys in and outside of her cage.. she has a large play stand as well.. I bought her her own toy phone, keys and remote control since she loves to attack mine so much.. she has a really cool abacus as well.. and suction cup perches on all of our windows so she can fly from perch to perch.. she is literally spoiled rotten lol

Deborah Kimbel There is no use to the toys if she doesn’t use them! I think training her to take full advantage of all of her toys and doing more brain exercises like you suggested could benefit a lot. At the end of the day she should get more enjoyment out of biting a toy than she does biting you, I’m sure you know that though!

I think the reason why my Sulfur Crested Cockatoo Alfie bites me is related to eye contact. We went over a year since the last bite but earlier this week he tried to take the thumb off my left hand as I was stroking him prior to putting him in his cage at bed time. His punishment was to be ignored for two days and get no strokes or treats. I cant convey just how painful it is having a bite from a creature with a bite pressure of 400-880 pounds per square inch. Alfie is absolutely fearless and scares the **** out of my Rottweiler Bella.

I acquired a rehomed Congo African grey a few weeks ago. Everything was going very smoothly until a few days ago. He is not a morning person and prefers to be up late. I’m trying to get his sleep more in line with ours and my other birds. I have started to put him away earlier and he has started biting me every time I put him in his cage. It’s to the point that he latches on HARD and I have to pull his beak off me. he had never bit me before and this is really becoming an issue. He now rarely steps up and prefers my husband because my husband never does anything with him except give him the occasional treat. My husband put him in the cage last night and he didn’t bite, but I think he was confused as to what was happening. I did not punish him or even act bothered when he did bite me and continued doing what I was doing. I knew he wasn’t biting out of fear, but just to get his way. I understand a fearful bird, but this is not that and I am at a loss. Please help! I am tired of having bloodied and bruised hands.

Kinda hard to reward him, when all he wants to do is kill me now :-( . From the inside of the cage. Once hes out , he tries to attack me as well. We (myself, husband, the teenagers) raised him from a tiny BABY . Kevin does the puffy thing too. He is FIVE and just now the hormones are flooding in... AND he is territorial with his cage. Before he "turned" on us My 15 year old (the last person in the house he was bonded to after "choosing" her) was doing recall training. I had taught him 2 tricks (roll over, and turn around) years ago he still knows and happily would do for a sun flower treat. She was also slowly (very slowly) training him to get used to a harness, never pushy..just teeny tiny baby steps rewarding every small bit of progress. He was putting his head through the hole for a treat. That is hoe far she got with him, on that.
One thing I can say we did start doing a month ago, was those scented plug ins. Could that cause him to act funny? I thought it would be ok because he was the only one out in the family room, and all my parrotlets were on the other side of the house. I guess we need to look into booking a consult with you. I had a youtube account I can no longer sign into . I forgot my email or password one day and YT never let me recover it. I tried several times. Any-hoo you can see how much we worked with Kevin on " The Parrot Blog" channel. But now he attacks me, (and my daughter if he randomly chooses). P.S. He is not clipped and I am very PRO flighted/against clipping when it comes to parrots. I feel that if we clipped him, it would make him worse.

Yes, there is. You ignore your bird for a few days, maybe a week or 2. Not completely tho, you're still there, just more in the background than usual. The people she dislikes pay attention to your bird. Star t slowly by just letting them replace food and water. Slowly you let other people do more with your bird. If the bird isnused to them and accepts them, then you can start picking up on giving the bird attention again.

Basically i want my bird to trust me and my hands and prevent him from trying to hiss/open his mouth at me when i try to swap his water or food also when i stand near the cage i do talk and sing songs and he does chirp back in a happy tone but yeah i dunno what his deal is maybe my birb is broken?

My BFs african grey tricks me...! The bird wants to be near me, he's very curious and likes to play with me. We sing and whistle, talks alot when he's in his cage. But when he gets out he turn silent.. I can train him to sing and speak.. but only in his cage.. Don't know why he turn silent when out and about.
BUT .. often when he signals he wants to come up on my hand and when he steps up he bites down really hard. He yawns to trick me that he's chill and fine, so I approach to give him a cuddle, a fruit/nut treat or see if he wants to hang with me and watch some tv. If he gives me zero interest to my hand I move away and do my thing. But... It's like he thinks "Yeah, I really don't want to do it, but if I do it I can bite you..." He even steps up... THEN he bites!
Recently I belive that it's like 70% he bites me and hurts me bad, this weekend my finger got a really deep cut near my knuckle and got very swollen. And 40% he actually wants a cuddle/playtime. I try really hard to look for the signs, but the birds comes to me on his free will (sometimes flies over to me even!) and tricks me. He lifts one foot, yawns and make the "cuddlefluff" look.
This channel learns me alot.. please make something on how to handle a trickster-parrot ! D: My hands hurt! The bird is very smart and about 15 years old.

But what about baby birds that are not being aggressive but are just curious and checking you out? I visited the 14-week old baby caique that I will take home once it is weaned today, and it bit me a couple of times very hard (once bruising my skin and breaking the skin leaving beak marks). He was not being vicious in any way at all but just curious - for example biting a freckle on the back of my hand. Caiques are known for nipping but how do you make them understand not to bite your skin too HARD? Being a baby bird he was just innocently exploring with his beak. It hurt bad but I didn’t react at all, but I did put him back in his cage about that time because he seemed to be getting pretty bites/nippy. How do you make baby parrots understand NOT to bite too hard?

My parrot clicks at me LOUDLY when I go to get him out him out of his cage. It sounds like chuckling I guess but I can never find anyone talking about anything similar. I’ve had him for ten years now and we’re really close but he’s so protective over his cage. He only does it to me, and occasionally my sister but never to my mum or dad. Even if I’m trying to feed him outside of the cage, he clicks and tries to bite me, but then goes right back to making loving noises so he doesn’t hate me or anything? I had a female parrot of the same breed and she didn’t click and just made a warning advance.

We live with 2 dogs 13 yrs old she is 22 yrs old n I’m 66 this yr . Plz plz I need help I can’t understand why she is becoming more aggressive. She sleeps long 12 hrs . But she screams sl loud my dogs cry n this is as soon as I just go behind a curtain I can’t even go to the potty it’s horrible n I’m deaf in my right earth from her screaming into it . But it’s always watching my back neck arms n my body she most times bites n back in cage she goes she knows exactly what she just did n went for the cage . Yes very smart but I’m not doing anything I know of to get her pissed off she wakes up on the wrong side of the cage n it gets so bad now that I can’t let her out . But a few minutes n it’s not fair to her or me . She gets seed m fruit pellets zypreem. I’m sad n confused n tried so many different things to reassure her I m not going anywhere but I’m the next room where she can see me she screams so loud my dogs cry from her screaming. It been really hard for me over the yrs but she has gotten worse lately like a month or two she laid 6 eggs last year I don’t want get to lay anymore I’m strictly her head n feet no nothing but she still attacks me

Is there an easy way to blunt their claws so that they won't stab you? Our double yellow head Amazon sharpens his claws into hypodermic needles. We used to trim and blunt them using a Dremel tool, but this required wrapping him in a towel like a burrito and immobilizing him. He hated this and this got to be too traumatic and so we stopped blunting his claws and we have stopped carrying him around on our arms and shoulders.

My Amazon parrot is MEAN. I'm the only one he bites, along with my dad. There seems to be no reason for it. He shows his foot to get onto my finger, and then he bites. It's like he takes his aggression out on me. His bite is not exactly soft either! He also regularly screams at me, and it's the sort of deafening heightened scream that can give one mild ptsd. I honestly feel so done with him, but as it's a family parrot I don't have the power to get rid of him.

If she thinks I'm going to come towards her it on. So I pretty much leave her alone anymore. We have a female Utoo the same way, but I can run or preen her head sometimes. Help

    My ideas
    1 read parrot body language
2 don’t push them to hard (and expect them to for example turn them upside down instantly)
    3 get diet right
    4 12 hours uninterrupted sleep

This will be long...sorry...First of all I think it's the season for my bird but we only just got her less than a month ago. She throws tantrums loves being out of cage tho but when she's out she grabs a hold of things and throws them remotes phones etc. I tell her no and she steps up she says bye bye when I do this cause she knows she's going back to cage but this last time I told her no stepped her up but once we got to cage and I started to open door she flapped screamed and bit me on the shoulder very hard. It was obvious she didn't wanna go back or have a timeout. Once she got in there she screamed for a bit but I ignored. My question is how do I correct this?? Please help! I don't wanna get bit like that again.

My lovebird eats his chop from birdtricks and his tops pellets, i also mix his food with a little bit of seeds to encourage him to eat. if i touch my clicker and drawer he becomes so aggressive and will charge on me to bite because he wants the millets in the drawer and want to train. i know what he wants but i trained him too much that he doesn't want to eat his pellets so i don't train him that much anymore. if i'm touch my clicker he bites me even if the clicker is on the table she would try to attack the clicker to tell me he wants to train but if i touch the clicker he bites me. so confused how to make him chill with my drawer and clicker

My cockatoo gets aggressive when we don't pay attention to him, he chases our feet. He also hates it when we clean up his droppings. My bird usually bites bc he loses his balance when we pick him up

We inherited a roughly 30 year old bird and we’ve had her for almost a year and I really wanna show her physical affection but when we first got her she’d try and bite us a lot but lately when I put my hand towards her she’ll put her head down and seems more like she wants to be touch but there has been times where she’s done that and something touches her head and she immediately snaps at it (she moves pretty fast) and I’m afraid of getting hurt. I feel bad casue I know she deserves love but I don’t know if she wants it yet and I’m to scared to try. She used to puff up a lot but now she rarely does it which I feel is progress. Does anyone have any tips?

My african grey is 4 months old and he’s a sweetheart. I’ve had him since he was one month old. Coco tends to bite when he’s over excited and playing. I don’t have him in a cage and never have and probably never will. He lives with me freely in my room so he can fly around and have his freedom. He is a good boy and i just want him to not bite because he sometimes bites too hard and I know he doesn’t mean to hurt me. What should i do? Please help.

My jenday one day started attacking the kids randomly, I’m not sure why or what happened to make him decide it’s fun to make kids scream and bleed… I can’t seem to get him to stop 😩

I love you guys and watch a lot of your videos but what seems really insane to me is that you allow your birds to fly free and it’s only going to take one time that a hawk is going to swoop down and you will never see that bird again until it happens you’ll continue doing what you’re doing. I know it’s amazing but you are taking a huge risk. You’ll be heartbroken when it happens.
