Just passed away this morning. One of the best coaches to never win a super bowl, hell, one of the best to not make a super bowl. R.I.P. Marty Schottenheimer.
You should have mentioned AJ Smith in addition to Spanos, AJ was the “Bruce Allen” who destroyed the Chargers. The Chargers team culture since 2007 has been “damn good”.
Marty is a prime example that you can be a great coach, but without some luck going your way at the right times, you will go from hero to zero instantaneously. Winning Super Bowls requires a ton of things to go your way, and yes, that includes luck. He just didn’t have the luck at the right times, and kept running into people like John Elway and Tom Brady who rain on his parade.
@@izzyyy8425 I’m a Raiders fan too, and yea. One of the great coaches of the 90’s and 2000’s, only to never even make it to a Super Bowl because of rotten luck. He helped bring some much needed additions to the game that draw parallels to what Pete Carroll did before Russ’s emergence or what Jack Del Rio did with us. May Marty rest in paradise.
@@KurtColville “That fucker Bono” indeed. We all called him that when he said there wasn’t one BBQ place in KC that could compare to even the worst joint in the Bay area.

Some of my earliest memories of my dad screaming at the television involved Marty Schottenheimer and the Chiefs. Once I was old enough to understand football, I joined in screaming at the television, too. There's a reason I had doubt in my mind until the clock hit 0:00 in the 4th quarter during Super Bowl LIV. I'd been broken early on in my childhood. I had nothing but cynicism and hearbreak due to one man. Who was he? Three words. Elvis. Fucking. Grbac.
The Chiefs is the typical team that, if you're not a rival, you don't understand why they didn't win more. They have every tool to. Great fans, awesome stadium, back in the Schottenheimer days one of the greatest owners ever...
@@HarbingerOfBattle that's true. Especially since Andy Reid was hired, the change was for the better. His main mission was to establish a winning culture and he gave much more. I think Mitch Holthus said better than I could on the dying seconds of SB 54: "Andy Reid was signed and things changed from day one". Likely not those words, but something around. About my prior comment, I came to a conclusion after some research into history: when the Chiefs had a strong team without a ring in the 90's and 2000's, one or a couple of things were always clicking, and the rest was really bad. Like in the 90's: awesome defense led by Derrick Thomas and the offense not among the best in the league, especially after Montana (with Allen getting old and QB's "above par", in the golf sense). Tony Gonzalez was great, but he was only one. In the 2000's the Chiefs had Vermeil running a great offense, but the defense never stopped a drive by the Colts. No balance
@@bizzles44 Take that back. If Marty would've had similar pieces he had in 2006 throughout his tenure with the Chargers, he would've made the Chargers into a perennial AFC powerhouse. Norv inherited a good team that's foundation was built upon the work of Schottenheimer and slowly transformed it into a pretty mediocre one.
A Tax Collector that’s the chargers in a nutshell. Win when there’s no expectations and fold like a lawn chair when they get picked for the super bowl. Marty could never win the big one anywhere he coached and it says a lot that no one even hired him after going 14-2. He’s just not that great of a coach and has a horrible playoff record
Marty Schottenheimer, as I call him the NFL's equivalent to MLB's Dusty Baker. Both know how to run a team, both will get you into the playoffs, then heartbreak in the playoffs. Still in awe how the Cubs beat the Nationals in the NLDS in 2017, like they tried to give it to the Nats
they DID. the rain delay gave them life. (MLB late games are very momentum based and they had none of it before that, it allowed them to gain a footing and the Nats immediately folded)
At least Dusty Baker can advance to the league's championship game. Everyone knows Marty Schottenheimer never won a Super Bowl, but it’s quite common to forget that Marty never made it to the Super Bowl.
While it is a bit unfortunate Schottenheimer's NFL legacy is nothing but postseason heartbreak, he still lived an incredible life that most of us dream of. R.I.P Coach
I was at Arrowhead for a preseason game when they inducted Marty into the Chiefs HOF. Tons of old stars from the past were there as well as the top brass of the team. I will never forget the sea of red as they broke out into chants of “Marty, Marty, Marty”.
My late father raised me a Charger fan in the Marty-Brees era but I left with Drew to NOLA. I always will have a soft spot for the Bolts but dropping Marty was the worst idea ever. I totally understand picking Rivers over Breesus. Who knew he’d come back from that shoulder injury? And Rivers had a decade as a stud QB. But the Chargers have never come close since. Always been something wrong that sinks them.
Dear AJ Smith, Thank you for giving us Eli Manning for Philip Rivers and wasting Philip's career in San Diego. Signed, New York Giants Ring of Honor member, Ernie Accorsi
joesakic91 AJ smith didn’t waste Rivers career. Spanos and his mismanagement ruined it for him. We all know that Rivers is better than Manning. The only reason Eli has those rings Is because the Giants Defense carried him there lol
@@Misfit_Z71 But Eli Manning still have to lead the Giants offense to the game-winning points against Tom Brady and the Patriots in SBs 42 and 46. That's why Eli Manning was voted Super Bowl MVP in both of those Super Bowls. Without Eli Manning's heroics and beating Brady at his own game which was game-winning drives, Michael Strahan and Justin Tuck don't have Super Bowl rings on their fingers. You don't know anything about winning.
joesakic91 sounds like I rustled someone’s jimmies for having a different opinion and apparently I don’t know anything about winning. If that’s what helps you get through the day then I’m all for it buddy.
@@Misfit_Z71 Well, your opinion doesn't hold water. So by your logic, Tom Brady was carried by Adam Vinatieri, Tedy Bruschi and Bill Belichick in his six Super Bowl titles? Was John Elway carried by Terrell Davis, Jason Elam and Steve Atwater for his back-to-back Super Bowl titles in 1997 and 1998? Did Joe Montana let Jerry Rice, Charles Haley and Bill Walsh to a dynasty in the 1980s for the San Francisco 49ers? See, you don't know anything about winning. Sure, football is a team sport, but you still need a QB to come up clutch in crunch time especially in the playoffs. That's why the QB gets more regular season and Super Bowl MVPs.
I love me some Marty. Huge Chiefs fan, and have been one since the days of Mr. DeBerg at QB. He certainly presents the cautionary tale to any coach, owner, or fan that some of the time it really is a little luck that finally wins you the big game.
Awesome video!!! OH, the HEART BREAKS I have endured with Marty Schottenheimer coaching my Cleveland Browns & Kansas City Chiefs!!! Loved Marty in Cleveland, for he did bring respectability to that franchise. I became a Chiefs fan because of Marty. Damn, all the tears shed for the possibilities that he would maybe eventually get a team into the Super Bowl. Definitely had the talent (mostly) on both teams, but both teams picked the most inopportune times to suddenly collapse around him. Oh, the pain of those KC quarterbacks coming over from San Francisco (other than Steve DeBerg - loved watching him play!!). THANKS!!! for the memories!!!!
The 2000's Chargers are when I really started paying attention to football, and I always had hope for Martyball. It never came to pass, but the 2005 team is what I really remember and wish had a championship

R.I.P. Marty Schottenheimer
May you find peace in the afterlife. It's a shame your stellar regular seasons couldn't translate into championships. I still can't believe he got fired after his team went one-and-done with a 14-2 record.
Dan Marino: A Legacy of Pain. One of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, but literally couldn't sell his soul to the Devil for a Super Bowl win.
HauntedSerenade you can thank Tom Olivadotti and that mediocre defense for not supporting him (and maybe Don Shula for not having the guts to fire Olivadotti)
That's just heartbreaking
And yet the devil did it for Namath due to his favoritism towards the Jets. Of course the Jets have been paying for it since then...
And now Schottenheimer has Alzheimer's. It's a damn shame, he really was a good coach...
Teufeldolch Nah

This was an unexpected start to my morning. Great video, Tree. Definitely made me learn some new things about Schottenheimer.
RIP Marty Schottenheimer. The leader of Schotzi’s Nazis

You should have mentioned AJ Smith in addition to Spanos, AJ was the “Bruce Allen” who destroyed the Chargers. The Chargers team culture since 2007 has been “damn good”.

"The culture is actually damn good" 😂😂😂 How that fuckin clown is actually an executive for a billion dollar organization is beyond me
Marty is a prime example that you can be a great coach, but without some luck going your way at the right times, you will go from hero to zero instantaneously. Winning Super Bowls requires a ton of things to go your way, and yes, that includes luck. He just didn’t have the luck at the right times, and kept running into people like John Elway and Tom Brady who rain on his parade.
Raiders fan but may he Rest In Peace. He was a legendary coach and will forever be missed.
me too
@@izzyyy8425 I’m a Raiders fan too, and yea.
I might be a Chiefs fan, but I can agree with that statement. Though at the same time I must give the obligatory Fuck You Raider.
Rest in peace Marty, wish you could have gotten a superbowl ring before you passed😔🙏

Me: Because boredom and the lack of sleep I have, I must watch

No balance
And yet, the Chargers gave Norv Turner chance after chance with mostly mediocre season after mediocre season.
A Tax Collector Norv Turner won more playoff games than Marty 😂
@@bizzles44 If they would've kept Marty as long as they did Norv, the Chargers might've been a perennial AFC powerhouse for years to come.
FUCK YOU SPANOS!!!
RIP Marty. Let's hope you win a title in the great beyond
*Marty Schottenheimer as “The Pain”*
PAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIN...
RIP Marty, you were a legend and deserved better. A true leader.
Marty was a great HC for the Browns, his defense was incredible, but his luck was horrendous

RIP Marty. I’m glad he won a title even if it wasn’t in the NFL. He was a great coach. May you rest in paradise
While it is a bit unfortunate Schottenheimer's NFL legacy is nothing but postseason heartbreak, he still lived an incredible life that most of us dream of. R.I.P Coach
That interception fumble has to be the biggest example of Brady’s luck I have ever seen
RIP Marty. A legend died today
I was at Arrowhead for a preseason game when they inducted Marty into the Chiefs HOF. Tons of old stars from the past were there as well as the top brass of the team. I will never forget the sea of red as they broke out into chants of “Marty, Marty, Marty”.

@@disneyfan8719 Yup Disney still owned the Angels in 2002.
Dear AJ Smith,
Thank you for giving us Eli Manning for Philip Rivers and wasting Philip's career in San Diego.
Signed,
New York Giants Ring of Honor member, Ernie Accorsi
joesakic91 AJ smith didn’t waste Rivers career.

Rest In Peace, Marty. Should’ve gotten a ring.
He kinda got a ring as apart of 1965 Buffalo Bills that won the afl championship
Marty was arguably the greatest coach to never get a ring, even though he deserved at least two in his career. RIP Coach Schottenheimer.
grew up in KC in the 90s, Marty is probably the single most reason why i coach today. Great record(except post season) and even better coaching tree
i watched this last night and now he gone.. RIP
I remember watching that Chargers vs Patriots game as a kid and proceeding to question how the hell a coach gets fired after going 14-2. Going 14-2 and losing to the greatest dynasty in history? No shame in that.
Sam Skott the incompetent management is the main reason
