    YES!! Pay for the privacy options when buying a web domain and invest in a PO box. Don't share your REAL phone number and use a business email address when possible. We try our best not to film the neighborhood we live in, or our vehicles license numbers (or anyone who lives nearby or is family and friends.) We tag ourselves in a location only AFTER leaving the area. We never tell people when we're going to be out of the house for extended periods of time either.

      Oh yeah, I didn't think about that part. People using your content to figure out when you'll be away from home. *mind blown* on that one but it's absolutely something to consider. Thanks for the addition there!

      You're welcome! As a military family, we maintain as much OPSEC and PERSEC as humanly possible. They are the guidelines we have to abide by in order to not open up vulnerabilities at home and regarding the military. Loose lips sink ships kinda thing lol

    I experienced this with my channel discord server and people messaging me at all hours of the day. It got to be too much and I had to block some people and change how I was able to be contacted. It's amazing how this can get out of hand so quickly. Thanks Nick!

    I have personal accounts and try to separate them from public presence. I never let people know my actual plans and real schedule is. I also use an address that is safe for mail and stuff. I use it when I mail stuff because I've notice that some people don't respect privacy when they do Haul videos. They'll mark out their own address but not the sender. So I make it where it's not my home address - it's my business address.
    It's crazy world out there. By safe. Sorry that weirdness happened to you. But thankful you made this video - many don't think about this when they start.
    The only really thing we have happened is impersonation of myself and others. It's why I can never allow the chat from livestreams show up in the live video. I've had people impersonate me and start cussing out my viewers on their channels. Its more of annoyance. We've blocked and reported dozens and dozens - maybe hundreds - it's hard to keep up with it. Pretty much every live stream I have to block a fake account at least once

    People not respecting boundaries is a major issue. I never agree to personal/private meetings nor give out my phone number or address. If I ever arrange a meeting with subscribers, it would be as a "group" on neutral ground and I'd bring my husband or sons. As a creator, you can be loving and kind to people, but always, ALWAYS set boundaries.

  • @TherapistTamaraHill

    My profession puts me at a slight disadvantage as far as my practice and doing interviews internationally. Being in the health profession and "helping" people causes a false sense of "closenss" that can push boundaries. It's so important to keep them and reinforce.
    Good video!

    This information is good beyond UA-cam. I teach my daughters to keep their social media apps private. Never show identifiable things such as School Uniform, Club Uniform like a sports team, license plate or even the front of your house. It really sucks but you have some odd characters out there. This is a good reminder for everyone.

    This is something that's been on my mind even though I'm a teeny tiny channel. I have often scrubbed footage as it had things in it that could identify where I live. Whois protection is a good idea that I hadn't really thought about before, but has bothered me (I get tons of crappy unsolicited email from my business email-not related to my UA-cam). I think I will get on to that!

    Totally agree with not using your real last name in particular. I've seen so many other UA-camrs put their full name out there, especially women that are single and I'm like NOOOOOO! I had a very bad experience not related to UA-cam in my 20s when I was doing freelance work for an online video game company, so I learned very young that keeping your personal information private is super important to stay safe online. One of our most asked questions is where do we live. I always just say "that's something we've decided to keep private". I'm sure it's just curiosity and I understand that, but you just never know. Good stuff as always - and I really hope a lot of new UA-camrs see this before they let too many things go public.

    • @NickNimmin
      @NickNimmin  5 років тому

      The exception is, of course, if you're building a personal brand. You still have to be mindful of the additional information you put out there, but its a requirement to use your name if you're selling yourself.

    • @CarmenandBrian
      @CarmenandBrian 5 років тому

      I still think your idea of using an alias is a good idea unless just not feasible.

  • @shadowdemonaer
    @shadowdemonaer Рік тому +5

    Another tip: block certain words on your channel. Words like your name (if you have your real name hidden and someone is trying to doxx that), your personal email, stuff like that. I also recommend blocking stuff that could cause inflammatory arguments in the comments, because if someone asks you your views on something and you choose not to comment on it (for example, fandom garbage that is unrelated to you), one side of that argument would misunderstand and think you're on their side, the other side will spread misinformation saying "not commenting means you're in support of harmful things and now I have proof". Basically, you can block anything you don't want to talk about. Because angry people are even more likely to try and get your personal information and try to doxx you, and stans can be just as dangerous.

    Even more than that - general personal safety stuff: 1) don't show the street view, exterior of your house and block out street signs. If you have children that you include in videos, watch what they are wearing....local sports teams, school shirts can make your child's school easily identifiable. You can also filter certain words on your channel so they never appear on your channel...like your phone number, address, what have you. Great video Nick...as always!

    Since my target group sits mostly on the other side of the planet and I'm yet to small to get recognized by Brazilians in Germany, location ain't that big of a issue. I'm getting weird messages on my Facebook page already but since I use my brand name in all of my pages, friend requests for my private Facebook profile ain't that much, except when I share my videos in Facebook groups where you appear with your real name. I switched my private Instagram on private and deactivated Facebook messages, therefore I provide an email address and people can contact me on Twitter. Trying already to keep privacy and business as separated as possible.

    There was someone like a year ago that was only hating on me, came to my house and wrote me messages (and letters to my house) that he was going to kill me and stuff and he even put dislike bots on my videos, so now I can only turn on the likes and dislikes after the video is online for a couple minutes.....

      Nick Nimmin Actually it was also the time that I reached a record amount of views and subscribers in a month. That was because the boy told everyone in the comments of big UA-camrs to dislike my videos (his comments were the top comments, bc he hacked likes), but no one disliked and I got all the views and almost +80 subs :)
      So it was a scary, but awesome part of my life so far.

    Nick, so sorry to hear you are dealing with some of those issues.. I often wonder myself about this for the future or for anyone gaining success... Great tips about the domain blocking and turning off location tracking!
    Unfortunately being online on UA-cam today means privacy is fairly loose. We have privacy laws depending on the country you live in however the internet has definitely changed things and create some barriers to fix in the last decade... I mean the whole point of UA-cam was to allow everyone to broadcast themselves or create content and upload it. They put the "You" in UA-cam.. so that means the downside is that if you want success on UA-cam, people have to know who you are and that can attract the unwanted element. A Catch 22 if you will but I must point out.. UA-camrs who care about reputation, the community and each other would never promote or support this kind of behaviour. its wrong and possibly criminal in nature. Just because its online and on UA-cam doesn't mean the law disappears or that there are not real world consequences to ones actions. Just remember that there are more good people in the world than bad so there is hope.
    I look forward to joining you on your Saturday shows!
    Have an awesome day!

    • @NickNimmin

      It's not a big deal, it's all dealt with. Just had to do a few blocks but it brought to my attention how easy people can get access to things they shouldn't have access to. Yeah, online privacy in general as far as websites collecting data is one thing but individuals tracking you down is a lot easier to avoid with a handful of initial precautions.

    I already have issues with people and I don't go on camera. The most recent was when I voice chatted with a male subscriber for about 10 minutes on Discord and then he kept trying to call me and another female from my server through the Discord calling function. He continued to send a ton of DMs that I wasn't responding to for a day or two. I finally replied with "can you stop messaging me?" and he acted butthurt and said, "If you see me as a treat,I am not but for you I can step back." As a woman, I've already dealt with way too many men that just act creepy, so it wasn't that shocking, but definitely a minor annoyance. The women who go on camera in my corner of YT get all kinds of sexual remarks.

    One thing is be careful about what you say about where you have been. If you think people won't notice if you say something like "I go to ______ a lot" or "as a child I went to _____ a lot of times... and I went there again recently" someone might recognize where that place is and will assume that you live nearby (or a few hours away from) that place.

    just posted last week that got picked up by the algorithm, as it quite provocative in terms of title and thumbnail. That rattled some troll out of the closet big time. I could see how that could be a bit unconfrontable if they got hold of personal information, as they are pretty unfiltered in their way of communicating

      I can't believe it... somebody called Russian Fuckface, how would you even bring your self to write something like that. But I knew I was heading toward trouble because I wanted to do a review on a popular drone battling reviews with millions of subs. So I did the opposite and made a review about all the bad things about the product, and got 35K views in less than a week and rank for "dji mavic pro review" second, before Casay Neistat on 3rd ;-)

    Also I would add that when UA-camrs do unboxings on camera COVER YOUR ADDRESS! Unless it's a BUSINESS PO Box of course. Lol! I can't tell you how many times I've seen beauty gurus flash their home addresses by mistake. All you have to do is stop motion it to get the address. I even emailed one beauty guru's business email to let them know to be careful with that (I did NOT mention it in her comments just in case) so they can consider pulling the video and maybe re-editing it. It gives me the shivers thinking about it!

    I've run across something sort of like this and could use some advice.
    Whenever I stream, I get people in there that want to play with me which
    is fine, but I don't do community streams very often because I don't
    have much of a following. So when I stream, I like doing solo stream or
    friend streams that way people can sit back and watch but I kind of find
    it annoying when I see someone new in the chat and all they want to do
    is add me and play with me. I've made a PSN community and a new PSN
    account so I can add people and play with them whenever I end up doing
    community streams and games but I don't know the best way to tell them
    that I'm not going to add them on my main account or play with them
    right then and there. Any advice would be awesome and appreciated!

    Actually after watching your live stream to today I have an important question: what do I do if I commented on a big youtubers video that’s in a similar niche and they copied a video I had and simply changed the title. I was kind of bummed since I’m just starting out. Any suggestions :(? It’s happened to me twice from different youtubers one with over 200k and one that was around 10k

    • @NickNimmin
      @NickNimmin  5 років тому +1

      Copied as in took you actual video, or copied as in stole your idea/thoughts? If the latter, there is not a lot you can do. There is no copyright on ideas.
      You can look at it this way - my ideas are good enough that these larger UA-camrs are willing to do videos on the same idea or topic. Alternatively, it could just be a coincidence, or the topic was trending in some way that multiple channels are covering the topic in various ways.
      If they are just taking your videos and re-uploading you can go to that video and click on the Report flag and choose the appropriate option to report to UA-cam.

    When uploading a video, try to not upload as you're at the location. Maybe delay your uploads by a few days or a few weeks.
    Don't post identifiable information about where you live on YT. Such as street names that are close to you. A number of UA-camrs have video of them going home, and deliberately stop the video a couple miles/kms from where they live and then restart the video as they're arriving, but not giving out house numbers or again identifiable info.
    Again, the problem is with people who don't know how to respect boundaries. As much as you think you know about them and as much a part of their world as you think you might be, they probably don't know you personally. You're a fan at that point, and unless given permission, don't push things. Things can tern weird and criminal very quickly.
    Try and sterilise your online presence as much as possible. Make sure you're not on the internet in very easy to access places. Maybe use your real name if it's incredibly common such as Michael Smith or similar. Someone trying to find a Michael Smith in Washington will probably return a couple thousand results.
