- What golf shaft should I play? At 2nd Swing, this is an important piece to our award-winning 2nd Swing Tour Van fitting process. One of the key components of that question is not just swing speed, but swing tempo. For every golf swing, there is a different swing tempo. And understanding your swing tempo is just as important as understanding your swing speed.
So, what golf shaft should I play? In this video, 2nd Swing master fitter Thomas Campbell uses Trackman technology to showcase the impact of swing tempo and why it can help identify the correct golf shaft a golfer should be playing.

Thank you for this very informative vid, on the back of this I re-analyzed my shaft fitted by a Callaway fitter some time ago. I've never been comfortable with the right misses and your vid explains it all, the 45g shaft was too light for my tempo so I've made a minor adjustment to a 50g slightly stiffer shaft which has tightened my dispersion and eliminated the big right misses without losing any distance. In terms of importance I'd go as far as to say the shaft is possibly the most important consideration in club fitting especially with the driver.
It really is player dependent based on your swing tendencies. 45g is very light if you have a faster tempo. For some it's the shaft that's most important for others it's the head. - Thomas
Why no slow tempo swings with the 75g shaft? Can you do a video of the torque differences in the same weight shafts? That would be interesting
Can't wait to get a driver fitting, 4200-5000 rpm driver spin is killing me!
Wow! Yeah you certainly could use a driver fitting to knock that down. Your game off the tee would change dramatically!! - Jackie
Please test the Aldila Rogue as well. Thanks.
Hello, thanks for great videos, 2nd Swing you are my favorite UA-cam channel.
My swingspeed is about 90 with the driver. I play Callaway Mavrik 10,5 with a projekt x evenflow riptide 50 graphite shaft regular. My average attack angel is 2 and spin rate about 3000. Is my spin rate to hight ?
Iam thinking of changing shaft, can you recommend some shaft to test ? Or other recommendations ?
I would love to have the tempo of Fred Couples, the reality is my swing has all the elegance of an octopus in a washing machine.
Over the last couple of years I have been working hard on my swing, and this has really changed the quality of my driver shots. I have gone from mostly being a bad slicer to being a reasonably straight driver...even manage to draw it from time to time. What I have noticed is that the flight of the driver has got a lot higher, even after I turned the loft down a degree. Could it be that the shaft is no longer suitable? (I play driver at 44.5" shaft regular with a swing speed of avg of 95-96 mph but I may have got slightly quicker)
It could be the shaft, however I am willing to be with the swing changes it is more the changes to your attack angle and you may need to adjust the loft of the driver first.
Please don't take offense of this comment but I just had to say I love your description of your swing-has all the elegance of an octopus in a washing machine-hilarious to visualize. I did actually laugh out loud. Just the choice of words-wow.
at 11:15 - ish, Thomas says it wasn't a very good, fast swing - The trackman reads 113.1 mph
Does weight add stiffness? I guess feel is the difference between the 55S shaft and a 75S shaft you show in this video. But does it impact stiffness too?
nah
It tends to lower torque
I’m golfing around 100-110 with no lessons.
Once I get lessons could that ruin the shaft I get fitted for if my swing changes?
What if you’re right between flex speeds? I tend to always be smack in the middle between most companies R and S speed recommendations.
I would recommend playing the lighter more flexible shaft you can handle. If you don't sacrifice dispersion go with the regular. If you have a quick transition go with the stiff. - Thomas
Another great video!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching!
Hello, could you please recommend a smooth-feeling driver shaft for Seniors?
It will depend on your budget but if you are open to spending a little more I recommend the Graphite Design IZ 4 or 5 R2 - Thomas
how do you figure out what head is best if you havent figured out what shaft is best? Shaft dictates how well you find the center of the club face.
Hello 2ndswingers!
I have a suggestion on what head/degree you should play. Can you guys test 10.5, 9, and 8 degree heads in the a same shaft but turn down to same loft? for example 10.5 turn down to 8 degree and 9 turn down to 8 vs 8 degree stock loft head in the same shaft and compare the spin, launch angle and distance?
Thanks for the content idea! I like this one to talk the differences on adjustments and why we fit to the loft of the head first, then make any adjustments with that head. - Thomas
How many shaft manufacturers are there? Are they as ubiquitous as tennis shoe makers? It’s really intimidating! Too many choices. The computer can break down my speed and swing style but if there are dozens of mfrs with multiple options, how do you winnow down to just a few options? Btw, are most shafts made in China?
question. Would a ventus black 6x be a tad stiff for someone who has a fast downswing but smooth transition? i top out at 123 but my average is around 115- 118. slower back swing but can unload the speed on the transition. Bought a tensei 1k pro white in a 60x to play a more feely shaft.
.I am 58 years old....swing speed of 90-94 mph...hit a fairly straight high ball...... 2800 - 3200 spin ...currently using a Tensei blue raw 55 regular shaft...44 1/2 inches long with a midsize grip..10.5 degree head.....which of the following shaft would you recommend....VENTUS TR RED 5 or Kai'li red 60 or UST Proforce V2 ? or would i be better off going to the Ventus blue or Kai'li blue cause of spin ? also would a 9 degree head most likely bring my spin down ?.....thx....very interested in your thoughts..... cheers from Canada ( I am unable to go for a fitting so i need to build this on the fly )
This is from awhile ago but shaft change is not going to be your friend when it comes to spin. If you want to reduce spin in a driver first decrease loft (you mention you hit it high so start there for sure) THEN look at impact location. Low on the face or heel side = more spin. Those two variables will matter way more than a shaft change. Now shaft change can impact strike location so if you are hitting it low on the face consistently, consider a shaft with a stiffer tip.
The 425 max I tried had a Mitsubishi shaft in it.
Great video, but I have a question guys: Should shaft flexes be different as one goes down the bag? For example, the type of swing I put on a driver is mashing out maximum distance but my 7 wood is usually an approach shot or a par 3 tee shot... which I would like to put a careful controlled swing on the ball. Right now, for driver, I am fitted into a regular shaft (Ping G425 SFT - PING Alta CB 55 Slate Regular) - but my 7 Wood is a Ping G425 SFT - PING Alta CB 65 Slate Soft Regular or "Senior" - should I keep it as is or should I switch the 7 wood flex to match my driver flex?
Generally as you go through the woods and hybrids in your bag you want to have a slightly heavier shaft for swing weight balance. For example Driver 55g, FW 65g, Hybrid 70g. However there are instances where golfers play a softer flex as they move down their bag. You see it regularly on The PGA Tour where the players play a X-Stiff shaft in their irons but play a S400 shaft in their wedges. It is going to be playing dependent and If you feel good with the 7 wood I wouldn't make the change - Thomas
@@2ndswing thanks, good to know.
How about lighter shafts for slow speeds?113 MPH doesnt tell much to us old guys.
This is a great video, very informative. Thank you!
Was hoping to see the ping tour on slow tempo!
Noticed that I push shots as well when I get too fast. Now I just hit 3/4 driver every time. Efficiency, contact and direction are amazing.
Thanks for watching! Glad you found a solution to straighten out those drives! - Thomas
What's the point of swinging the driver slower? It's the big dog in your bag. Big dogs gotta eat! You obviously don't have the right tool for the job. Make the tool fit you. Don't fit yourself to the tool. You want to be able to swing your driver as fast and under control as you can. Might as well just hit an iron or 3 wood of the tee if you're worried that much. Come on man. Don't punish yourself by swinging the big stick like a pansy.
@@4pitts1burgh28 Do you ever ask people what they just hit off a par 3?
@@4pitts1burgh28 You sound like that kind of dude.
@@lkae4 no because I know what my clubs do. So never a need too. But swing your driver bud. Get the correct shaft and swing it like it's meant to be swung.
Does 2nd Swing do just shaft fittings? I was fit into Epic Max LS w/ MMT 70g X and seem to push a lot to the right now.
Yes. Come into any of our stores or work with our sales and service team online and we can get you fit for the right golf shaft - Thomas
What is the difference between tempo and transition . Ie harsh or smooth and easiest way to self diagnose which you have . Mizuno test said I have a 3.5. Tempo but aggressive transition am I smooth or not
Good question! Tempo is the time of the backswing through to the follow through. Transition is how quick that downswing starts from the top of the swing. With an aggressive transition your shaft can load earlier needing a stiffer more stable shaft. - Thomas
For me personally-never been fitted-too expensive. Now, with investments doing quite well - I have the ability to do this. I tend to adjust myself before my clubs. After all, the user is always at fault - right!? So my sim max driver - I hit it about 270 yards but have to close the club head about 10 degrees to hit the ball straight. Otherwise it's go find my ball in the right woods area. Slice of the gods! I probably need a stiffer shaft, but hit 13 out of 15 fairways last time out. Do I dare change it up now? I'm sure my closing of the club head might not be as consistent as just getting a stiffer shaft. As for my steel irons-I probably need graphite/wood combo as I swing mid to high 90s and not 115ish for my driver.
Just explained my driver issue. 115mph+ using stiff and 60gr shaft.
I bought PING G425 with the Alta CB 55 stiff.
Had to get in on line as I was unable to get one at a retailer. They only had that shaft with that driver. My swing speed is 108-110, and I don’t like the whippiness of the shaft.
This winter I’m going to try out some others.
The Alta CB 55 is pretty light and will promote a higher launch angle. I would consider trying the PING Tour or Aldila Rogue White shafts. - Thomas
That is exactly what is happening.
Just say shaft. Not necessary to say GOLF shaft everytime gents, we are all well aware we are watching a golf video. Great video and content but really come on 🤣
LOL
Autoflex
It’s not how fast you swing it, it’s how you swing it fast 🏌🏻♂️. Get fitted!
I like this analogy! Exactly get fitted as the results will be player dependent! - Thomas
I just can’t see how your slowing the tempo down it just keeps looking like your ripping it at the same speed !!!
Tempo takes into consideration the back swing, transition and downswing.

Golf shaft drinking game anyone?
Who makes the Ping shafts? Please don’t say Ping.
Aldila was one of the claimed manufacturers of the "Altas",
and UST Mamiya the "Tour 65-75",
AWT 2.0 in irons is by Nippon.
Y’all think y’all TXG
These guys post quality content too.
TXG content is good too. Thanks for the kind words. - Thomas
