Wow...informative and well put together. I love wider wale cords but they arent as easy to find as the narrow ones such as levis. Perhaps ill get lucky and find some. Its such a great look in the fall and winter. Keep up the great vjdeos!
Thanks bud! Oh yea, wider wale are getting harder to come by for sure! If I don't feel like vintage RL's from eBay, I usually wait till they go on sale from J. Peterman - his are chunky for sure! Good luck on the hunt!
You have to keep looking.
I have two wide wale shirts and a pair of wide wale trousers. It took awhile to find them
Thanks for this very informative video just in time again! I was eye-ing this beautiful wide waled vintage cord navy blazer, and now I know how I can wear it in style. Not knowing how was really my biggest hesitance. Have a great one Joseph!
@@neodragonlordxonyoutube8254 hey thanks for watching another one, bud! Oooo wide wale navy sounds goood! Navy goes so well with greys, camels, and other blues - not to mention so easy to throw on with jeans! An instant classic!
Another stellar video! Please keep them coming, your subscriber count will take off for sure. I bought an olive green corduroy suit from Drake’s (it’s in your slideshow twice). At first I was worried it’d look like Wes Anderson cosplay, but it turned out to be one of my best buys. Between wearing it together and breaking it up, it’s versatile and approachable. A solid option for these times when you worry about looking too formal. In my experience, women love corduroy on men - it projects coziness and warmth, people want to reach out and touch it. Had such a positive experience so far, now I want more corduroy tailoring maybe in chocolate brown or russet. There’s a tip in The Casual Style Guide book by Permanent Style that stuck in my head, which is that brown cord is a great launching pad for bright colors.
@@faranji 🤤🤤 oh man a Drake’s cord suit - what a fine choice you made! Yea no joke, they seem to have paid such attention to their quality, the tailoring, the fit - really some of the best pieces around! And yea, ladies do love the ‘roy! If you could wear some cashmere, suede and corduroy in one outfit, you’d be made in the shade!😎 Interesting tip on the chocolate brown color, that’s a really good point - seems like it would be perfect for tonal earthy neutrals, all shades of grey, and really let some colors sing - warm and cool - plus it looks so good at night in soft lighting - now you’re making me want to hunt one down for myself! Thanks for watching another one bud, I’m glad you’re enjoying them!
Well done and well researched! I would love if you are able to discuss Cashmere and please help some of us out with the difference between blazers and sport coats please
Thanks, bud! Cashmere is definitely a great topic - I've learned that not all cashmeres are the same - I bought a nice cashmere sweater from J. Crew onetime and it ended up with tears and holes all over - it was so thin! But learning how to invest in something so expensive would be great topic to explore in the future! And as for the blazer vs.sport coat - the general rule is that if it has gold buttons, it's a blazer and otherwise it's a sport coat - but sometimes the terms get thrown around interchangeably - I'm guilty myself sometimes! Another great topic, for sure!
New fave fashion channel
Aw jeez - thanks - that's awesome! Really glad to have you along for the ride!
Great info, love this channel - I've recently purchased a few pairs of corduroy pants and now I'm eyeing this Ralph Lauren corduroy blazer (thrift) - as an older gentleman I'm now getting into the vintage clothing and style. Love it!!
Ooohhh yeah - this sounds like the confessions of a corduroy convert, for sure! Just about the time I think my cord pants are my favorite fall and winter items, I'll break out that corduroy blazer and realize it's even more of a cool weather essential! Also - a smart move to find some vintage pieces thrifted - a cord with a little well loved wear always seems to have so much more character than something too new.
Great Video - in fact great videos - loving the channel and the content.
@@simonmoses4023 Thanks bud! Glad you’re enjoying them, happy to have you on board!
Great video Joseph. I like the concept with 6 different steps. You gave good reasons to wear corduroy. I wear a corduroy sports coat myself. As child, I wore corduroy pants but somehow never really liked it. I wear more flannel and woolen pants in the Fall and Wintertime.
Other names are often used for corduroy. In Germany, they call it “Cord”. In the Czech Republic, Slovakia, the Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland (my country of origin) it is used to be simply known as "Manchester". This because the corduroy, we recognize today, originated in 19th century City of Manchester (Great Britain), where its hard-wearing nature made it ideal for factory wear.
You made a big step forward in the quality of your videos. The decision to appear bigger on the screen helps a lot. You seem now more like a real person and not some cartoon figure.
I like your fair isle sweater vest. I was looking for one myself for many years but could not find a pattern I like. After watching your video, I gave eBay another try and found one in dark brown. Exactly as I always wanted. Your video helped me to close a gap in my wardrobe. Thanks Joseph.
@@kaykunz4730 Hey Kay! Boy I’ve gotta say, you provide some of the best commentary I receive on this channel, hands down!
First off, I think i generally agree with you on corduroy pants. I used to design trousers for RL - cords were a huge part of our line every year, so I always ended up with stacks of samples to take home to wear each season. Because of this, I had the advantage of really being able to nitpick and choose what cut and wale size seemed to work best. And I agree, especially with wide wales - they were never the easiest to wear. But I did ultimately find that finer 14 wales, and especially in a sporty 5 pocket were a little more flattering and less bulky with tailored clothing.
I had no idea regarding their being referred to as Cord or Manchester due to their origins there! Fantastic info!
Thanks, for the note on my quality - that’s hilarious that I resembled a cartoon figure in a slightly off scale! 😂 I’ll try to keep fine tuning that proportion and background!
I’m glad you found a fair isle! I’ve got two or three myself, and they’re sort of a love/hate item. Sometimes they feel so garish, but I think you’re exactly right - the overall coloring has to have a nice balance, and I’ve learned to treat them as a texture, just as I would a tweed jacket. I find myself wearing more subtle coloring these days, but their dense layering of colors really could be a great way of offsetting a bolder color in a shirting stripe, necktie, or over check in a jacket. A fun challenge to explore!
@@SomeNotesonStyle Thank you for the compliment. Your videos are great, and I like to write comments for it. I also enjoy sharing my knowledge with others about classic men's style.
Love your channel! Has my wardrobe and style preferences nailed. Classy production. Not stuffy! Thanks!
@@tekbuf6301 Thanks! That’s great to hear - a little dash of this and that, never a strict set of rules - always fun to enjoy the journey!
Huh, very interesting channel. You apply all of the classic clothing knowledge into to the modern brand world, sort of bringing down fashion to the classic menswear world. Usually it is one or another, where the more I learn the more I tend to avoid brands due to poor fitting/construction/price from most modern big brands, making my wardrobe looking more and more traditional. But this video does showcase that there is a way to dress classically and youthfully for the modern world
@@checkandmate4703 Hey that’s awesome! I feel like you just wrote my channel’s thesis, my man! I always want to preach that anybody can go into any store and if you shop carefully, you can end up with a timeless style, if you just push through the distracting crap. It doesn’t matter if I’m shopping at Tom Ford, H&M or Walmart - if you check the labels for natural fabric content, try on for your fit preference - and keep a good sense of your own classic style - there’s almost no wrong answer! Thanks for calling that out!
Nice work loving the channel! Only problem for me is I live in Florida now so corduroy is probably out of the question now lol.
Thanks, my man! Ha! Yea - Florida is not exactly corduroy country 😂 Mayyybe you should stick to my previous video on linen and call it a day!

@@pamchambersconsulting3210 Thanks again! That’s interesting you say that - the music seems to be such a love/hate kind of thing. I mostly try to keep something going to keep the pace a little zippy so it’s not too dry, but I have had some say they’re not fans, and others ask where they can find the playlist. I’m always curious if it’s the type of music, the volume, or just the fact that there’s music at all. Thanks for the note, I’ll try out some variations in the future and experiment! 👍🏼

I LOOOOOOOVE CORDUROY!!!!
I certainly agree with his statement that every man should have a corduroy sports jacket
It's cozy, warm and oh so flattering! What more could you ask for in a fall & winter fabric?
Thanks for the previous response. I agree with you on the fabrics definitely as I currently have 3 unlined Cotton Sport Coats and a Wool/Linen blend that's a bit better for fancier occasions but I would still enjoy a Tweed so perhaps I can still look into getting a Cotton version like you said. All of mine feature Patch pockets with the exception of my Plaid Suit jacket which I also use as a sport coat but overall patch is my main preference. During Summer I mostly rely on Linen shirts and skip a jacket entirely even if it is Linen or Cotton but it depends. AZ gets into the triple digits not sure about TX. Apologies for the long comment but hopefully when I return to the Thrift store in December I'll be able to find something.
@@Manuel421 heck yea, bud! It sounds like you’ve got a perfect handle on your choice of warm weather fabrics! I totally agree with the patch pockets, too - I love that they give a sport jacket a nice point of difference from a regular everyday suit jacket. I’ve heard that the patch is considered to be a little more casual, but I think especially now, with so few guys wearing jackets at all - they help the sport coat to feel a little less formal, and just add a nice visual interest! But yea, defiantly keep a lookout for cotton or flax or linen tweeds, not always the most common, but definitely makes wearing tweed a lot easier round these parts of the world, for sure!

Redmayne's head cutter Tom Mahon has a good video where he goes over how they construct corduroy suits with the warp angling up rather than down , which makes it shimmer and change colors in the light. Just another way to spin this sartorial classic.
@@shaunmoss1915 ahhh now this is a very serious point you’ve got here. Some brands and tailors too, I suppose, insist on cutting nap up so that the color seems most correct to the wearer and yes, you get that shimmer effect for those looking at the wearer. Other brands cut nap down so that when the customer feels the piece on a hanger or folded up, when the run their hand down, it feels softer and doesn’t catch and the color appear more even/flat from afar. Same goes for pocket facing on a pair of pants. I always thought this was so intriguing that they’re competing schools of thought on this - who knew?!
Once again BRAVO information my friend.

I could see myself with a jacket like yours with jeans, or corduroy pants by themselves, but I can't see my self wearing a full suit of this fabric.
@@CanadaFree-ce9jn classic worn cords for the win, my friend! Yea that kind of wear is no joke! First to comment. In 10 minutes, all my dreams pertains to corduroy, will come true! Crossing fingers OP brand corduroy shorts I wore as a kid in the early 80s, and the Farah Brand (I’m an OG) corduroy pants I wore in elementary and middle school, are back in style 🎉
@@CaptainWillard830 oh noooo! I left out the OP’s - what a great call! Guess that means a spring corduroy sequel will have to be in the works! As for Farah Brand - you just taught me something new, I’ll have to do some research on those guys…sounds like I’m talking to a corduroy king over here 😜
@@SomeNotesonStyle I bet you a buck that Ralph Lauren knew Mr Farah back in the day. Looks like the Farah brand was either sold, or licensed, to a company based in the UK. The clothing I remember is from the original company 🎉
“Mansour Farah, a Lebanese immigrant, came to El Paso, Texas, from Canada as a hay and dry-goods merchant. He and his wife, Hana, started making shirts in 1920 and expanded their line in the 1930s to bib overalls, denim pants, and similar work clothes. James Farah, the elder son, took over the administrative duties of the operation upon Mansour's death in 1937, while younger son William took charge of production. Sales increased every year from the company's incorporation in 1947 as Farah grew from an anonymous contractor to the military and big mail-order chains to a brand-name manufacturer and wholesaler. In the early 1960s the brothers developed their signature product--inexpensive, durable, permanently pressed slacks.”

@@CaptainWillard830 woah! 🤯 This is such a great goldmine of info here - what a ride through the boom and bust of the domestic clothing manufacturers. I know it’s not funny 😄 but I really like that the beginning of the downfall came when Farah decided to invest in Leisure Suits and misses the pivot to jeans . It’s like Beta or VHS! Thanks for this great insight, gonna have to do some eBay digging…
Another great video plus how did the bearded chap in one the end video break into my wardrobes. Had to zoom in to double check it was not a pre giant beard picture of oneself
Hey Thanks! 😂 Okay, now I'll have to keep a trimmer nearby so I don't get too shaggy! Maybe like five or ten years ago I tried a bigger beard, but never really one of those retro-barber-hipster styles. But never been a big fan of my own vague double chin, so the light beard kinda helps me feel better in my own skin.
@@SomeNotesonStyle some people seem to refer to mine as the shoebox 🤔 but in the sideways rain of a Scottish autumn it does it duty in addition to vintage tootal scarf, even if people can’t initially see said scarf. Those yellow pants are way out there!
@@larrywilcox5282 woah woah woah - okay I think I’m officially talking to the first go to hell corduroy wearer on here - I appreciate that answer, because I could not think of a better event for knockin out those brights! @@SomeNotesonStyle "okay I think I’m officially talking to the first go to hell corduroy wearer on here"...No way! I love my cords! I'm saying yellow pants in the winter in the northeast. @@JP31378 Anytime, my man!
Great work! Curious if you have any tips for those of us who sadly live where it’s always warm but want to bring in the autumn flavor anyway?
@@FlatcapHobbit Thanks! Well, I’m right there with you bud - it’s still in the 90s where I live 😅 aside from a good air conditioner, I always find the first trick is color. Keep some darker tshirts and more darker tans, olives and browns for pants as well as medium or darker jeans. Then I’ll layer unlined jackets like workwear jackets or trucker jackets in cotton. If you look around you can find cotton sweaters - so they’re a little more breathable. Then I end up wearing cotton/linen button down shirts or pants a little farther into the season - they’re usually going on sale by now at places like Spier & Mackay, Mango, H&M or Uniqlo. I also look for unlined cotton sport coats - usually Mango’s pretty good - again I try to find navy, browns or olives so that they look a little more fall-ish. Then I might throw in some dark brown suede loafers or chukka boots, since they’re not too heavy. Then I just keep a cup of ice cubes around and run my wrists under cold water 😂
Thank you for all the advice! I’ve been working on putting together a good chinos and Henley collection but definitely need to look for some good cotton jackets. Right now I have a nice Irish wool cardigan which basically works as winter coat in these parts 😂
"A big ole pair of grandpa trousers." 😂😂😂

Brother, your videos are second to none. "Utilitarian-Communist sorta vibe" got a good chuckle out of me.
I love that background where is it from?
Thanks! Well, I kind of "borrowed" it from a UA-cam jazz/ambiance channel called Smooth Jazz BGM. I need to figure out how to make my own soon, but in the meantime, hopefully I'm not stealing anyone's work - although I always wonder about those kind of channels, is this a real person making this? @@arbygonzales Hey Arby! Thanks for checking out my channel, my man! The music is from a service I use for royalty free music called Epidemic Sound. I've had two RL cord jackets for years; tan and navy. Something popped inside m,y head and said - buy some RL navy and tan pants and make two cord suits. I Ebayed the navy pants on day one. I've bought (and returned) four pairs of tan cord pants trying to match the other jacket; three were too dark, one too light. Still looking.
24 hours later - Got it!
@@KRW628 no way! That is no small feat, my friend! When I used to design at Ralph, we used an internal color library, where we had special colors for the brand. And I’ve gotta say, there must’ve been like two hundred tans and khaki’s 😂 That was such a good idea to complete the pairings, so now you’ve got combos for days!

@@willtavernise 😂😂😂 ahh I believe George was “ensconced in velvet” But that reference is so good, now I’ve GOT to make a velvet video just to pull that one in there - good call! Every time I watch that show, the more I realize just how spot on George’s style really was!

Actually, I'm wearing fine Wales 5 pocket green cords from Gap - 3 years old ..the knees are showing wear which is a cin and a plus. I've thought of Cordings being in blighty but it's image is a bit 'old man' ..
Also got cord in tan sports coat, navy button down & a bright red crimson.
No, I don't wear them altogether- but thinking about it ...(?).
Also adore moleskin, although it's not consistently made by brands ( shame).
@@jaysterling26 sounds like a beautiful collection you’ve got there, I appreciate the range of pieces, they each sound like the best of each category! You know, it’s funny I don’t know if I’ve worn my cords down that far before, but it’s a really cool look and seems right in line with their workwear background.
You know, you’re right about Cordings being a bit stuffy - and it’s kind of a shame that with that great color palette, they never worked on trying out some newer types of fits or styles - maybe it’s just more of an idea of the brand that seems kind of more intriguing than it’s actual execution.
And my friend, moleskin is king - that stuff really makes a garment sing, it’s so durable and rugged, the way that it’s colors get worn in, that great heavy weight, which develops that softer brushed shine over time - moleskins really should be treated like blue jeans for how universally they can be worn. It is truly a shame to be as rare to find as it is, agreed!
Your corduroy jacket is too short and too tight. It has no drape
Thanks for noticing! I enjoy wearing shorter, trimmer fits of more traditional, heavier fabrics to feel a bit more modern. Maybe this is a holdover from the Slimane Dior days. This is, of course, just personal preference - so yes, you’re right, drape certainly has a timeless elegance that I often prefer for fabrics with a touch more fluidity, like worsteds, linens or silks. Great point of discussion for sure!
Step one, put it on.

I love corduroy but want to know which textile manufacturer makes the highest quality corduroy in the world? Also, 15 years ago, I bought a Calvin Klein Raglan corduroy three quarter waistcoat when Calvin Klein used to be a good brand. It was a lined 5 wale black corduroy coat similar to the coat at 17:45. The corduroy was as soft as velvet, the black as deep as the midnight sky, and my favorite coat I've ever owned. I'm not rich but when I walked down Madison Avenue, people would often ask me about this coat. I bought it on sale at Century 21. Unfortunately, I either lost it or it was stolen. It was a minimalist urban masterpiece and I've been looking for another high quality urban Raglan-style corduroy coat since, to no avail. I don't want a blazer with lapels. I would like a coat that buttons to the top in chilly weather. Does anyone have any suggestions. I've Google searched for countless hours and come up short. I'll keep looking though. First world problem, for sure. But still, I want to learn. Who makes the highest quality corduroy? Thank you.
Oh man - you've got me droolin' over the sound of that coat! Sounds like that was a beauty! And such a unique modern cut for such an old school material - jeez we need that old CK style back again!
Well let's see as far as textile manufacturers for Cord - we used to use Duca Visconti or Pontoglio for RL Purple Label, and sometimes Brisbane Moss for a sturdier, more English version. But of course, those are pretty...pretty...pretty nice. As far as what brand makes a more realistically priced offering - I think I'd have to just refer back to video, cause I'm kinda stumped at THAT luxury price. Heck, I think I remember Loro Piana making a cashmere/cotton corduroy not too long ago...hope that's not too pie in the sky of a response!
😂😂

Never thought of washing my corduroy blazer in the washer’

Your thoughts?
🙏
Yea - I think you're totally right to dry clean. I mean, technically, yes the fabric is cotton, and if it were COMPLETELY unlined/uncanvased/unfused - then I would think you could throw cords in the wash - but probably safer with shirts or pants, and anything tailored better to dry clean.
