After the spindle with the bearings and races is removed from the cage, it seems to me that it would be easy to soak it in kerosene or alcohol for a while to clean out all of the old grit and grease. Soak, shake, empty, repeat, dry and then reassemble with grease. Maybe that is overkill but it would be easy to do.
Hello everyone. I tried this on my pedals Shimano XTR M9000, and although fit, there is a small play in one of them. I think it's because of a small break in one of the race of the bearings. Very useful video
Should the plastic piece be able to move a bit along the spindle shaft? I couldn't get mine together without it having that little bit of movement, so figured I had it wrong. But no amount of tightening down on the bearings will eliminate it. So I took the spindle out of the body of my other pedal which I have not done anything to yet, and that plastic bit moves back and forth along the spindle also. The movement is along the spindle shaft, not a back and forth rocking.
My bearings are in good shape, but they somehow got magnetized! Now trying to get them assembled is like an Abbott and Costello routine with me playing both parts. 😅 Aside from getting new bearings, do you have any suggestions?
Awesome video. I have a bunch of PD-A520;s, and I assume they are the same spindle style? One of my sets was loose at the spindle when I bought them(used) and I will now crack it open and replace the bearings and set the tension on them. Thanks!
All perfect.. I do believe Shimano suggest less grease than you applied.. The excess ejected shows the amount you overdid it... For the price of bearings and the time and effort needed I would suggest changing bearings at the same time as these demount servicing..
Hi, thanks for the video! Do you have any suggestion for my problem? On my SPD-SL Ultegra R8000 i wanted to regrease them, because they were spinning too freely. Left pedal was fine, change the grease.. works great. The right pedal when the spindle is out it spins absolutely free without any rough feel, but when I screw the axle in so it is almost at the end, the spindle starts to turn very rough and hard. It feels like something in the pedal body is blocking the spindle to turn smoothly. I cleaned the body about 1000times, tried more grease, less grease but nothing changes. Do you think, that the body could be damaged when using too much grease? It happened at some point, when I was pushing the old grease out with screwing the axle in.. I´ve never seen anything like this, did many pedals in the past with this method and all works fine. Thanks in advance!
RJ When you say marine grease do you mean the stuff they sell in auto stores for boat trailer wheel bearings? There may be parts of the country where marine stuff is hard to come by.The boat trailer stuff is not supposed to wash away with water easily, Boat trailers are very hard on wheel bearing they are often driven for hundreds of miles and then dunked in water without being allowed to cool down so the grease for them is pretty durable stuff.
Very useful video, thanks! The process is very straightforward, however I am running into some issues during reassembly. I am servicing Shimano PD-6800 pedals and have cleaned and regreased them. Have adjusted the bearings in the vise and they feel perfect, run smoothly and no movement. However, when I reassemble the pedal unit, somehow there is some pressure being created on the bearings, so they become very stiff and can hardly turn. I have tried backing-off the pressure on the cones, but then when I reassemble the pedals, there is movement in the axle, so obviously its too loose. Any ideas what the cause of this may be?
Great video, it really helped me with an old pair of Shimano PD-1056 pedals. By the way, do you know if it's possible to completely disassemble the cleat system? I my case, after servicing shimano Ultegra pedals, after I put axle back to pedal, one of the pedals doesn´t spin smooth anymore, I set up bearings well, this is not problem. Any ideas, why did it happen ?
I don't know you mean by spin smooth. If you mean rough, then the bearings may be too tight. If you mean you spin it and it stops soon. that is just the grease. That resistance won't be felt while riding.
My left pedal is cracking when im pedaling (i changed botom bracket bearings, its not from it). Its new (not much more than 70km)... Do you think that doing what you did here would fix it ?
+WoD STALKER If the bike is new, take it back to the shop. Sounds can come from anyplace and seem like they are coming from other places. Could be the pedal, or the seat post, or a cracked frame, etc.... You have to work through it.
+RJ The Bike Guy Bike has like a year and more than 2000km... I changed the pédals and noise were no longer here, this is why im sure its from my pedals
+WoD STALKER Okay, you said "Its new". If the pedal is new, make sure the pedal is mounted into the crank tightly. Make sure to grease the threads. If the noise is inside the pedal and it's new, return it. Again you have to work through the issue. Isolate where the noise is and fix it.
+RJ The Bike Guy Ok ty for very fast reply :) In fact returning it would cost highly more than buying the litle shimano tool, and i think that i'd better learn how to service it, for the future. If grease inside and on the threads can fix it i'd rather doing it myself

At 5:50 you hit on the key to these pedals: plastic. It just so happens that the big plastic part there is also a load bearing piece. It's absolutely shameful that these were built this way. It's an otherwise pretty decent design and I have to imagine that the corners were cut for sheer expense. Good video and pretty good instructions. But I honestly have no idea how anyone could get to the point of rebuilding these before the plastic parts wear out. I have had two sets of these (my mistake) and in both cases the big plastic part wears so severely that it just grinds on the shaft of the pedal. *And*, that big plastic part is what holds the whole shaft into the pedal casing. It's really shoddy and truly shameful. Another 12 cents and they could have made that part aluminum or another alloy. And for another buck or two those could be sealed cased bearings. I was stunned when I took these apart the first time to find just how poorly they are made.
I have A530's with the same type of spindle/axle, with over 13,500 miles on them. I've cleaned them a couple of times and replaced the bearings once, but they're certainly not worn out. I need to clean them again but they're still doing pretty good.

Are there other tools we can use aside from the TL-PD40? I got a shimano 105 5700 pedal i want to regrease. We’re still on lockdown where i’m from and i can’t order one, bike shops are still closed and only essential items are allowed for delivery.
Not really. Not Amazon, not ebay?
@@RJTheBikeGuy No. They only allow food delivery, groceries, medicine, essential stuff. I ordered a bar tape a few days before the March 17 lockdown. It still hasn't arrived and it's almost 2 months now. We're not even allowed to bike here, only for bike to work.
@@leftyseel8658 Then you might have to wait. Or figure out how to make a tool. Here, bikes are considered transportation, which is essential, so essential workers can get to their essential jobs if they need to.
Can you disassemble the pedal with the pd-40 tool? Can you use the round end of a regular wrench?
??? I use the PD-40 tool in the video, so yes you can use it. No, cannot use a regular wrench unless you want to screw up the pedal.
Sorry I meant to ask can you disassemble it without the tool.
The tool is only about $5 on ebay.
Yes, but sadly the shipping cost and taxes will cost more the tool as I live outside the US. I am still waiting if the LBS here can get one. I just wanted to change the grease on my new pedals as I never liked the stock grease they use. Anyway thanks, and keep up the good job on these videos. I love how detailed you go through these.
I have used the box end of a wrench to disassemble SPD pedals. Just be certain of which way to turn the wrench. The "nut" is plastic and easy to ruin with very little force.
My left pedal (Shimano XTR TRAIL)doesn't have the 8mm jam nut, but the right pedal does. Is this normal?
Not that I know of.
Super video ! 👍
Muy buena explicación. Excelent
Sir what is the size of ball bearing?
Mine had 3/32" bearings. I don't know what YOURS has.
Great video nice to know you can repair your pedal didn't even know that was an option Thanks for that anyway :) Am what's the name of the tool you used to spin out the axle, I have a set of mtb pedals running fine but would prefer to have the right tools for the day come's to sorting that out :)
Shimano TL-PD40 Pedal Axle Removal Tool.
Thanks very much your absolutely legend you are :)
Thank you, very helpful video
how about servicing shimano m505 pedals?
They would similar to these. ua-cam.com/video/n9D16t8WK00/v-deo.html

Yes, in most cases.
can you tell me which one
Marine grease.
Nice work
Where i can buy that special tools

Thank you very much
Great video interesting
Would this work for m980 pedals?
+Mike Suarez Maybe. You can try it.
Hello anyone knows where can I buy the bearings?

Thanks 👍
RJ The Bike Guy
watched your video, i am having trouble putting springs back in my pedals[tension spring] any idea
I don't think I have encountered pedals with springs in them.
they are by your right thumb at 0:12 under the - + plate underneath
Those springs. I thought you meant inside the pedal with the bearings or something related to the video.
no LOL nothing to do with the bearings, i can't find any youtube videos, showing that [the mechanism any suggestions
Lembra bastante meu começo kkkkk
Size po ng bearing?
Do you have diy tool for the pedal?
No. The one special tool can be gotten relatively cheap on ebay.

shyflirt1 Can I use the Finish Line teflon grease?
Yes, I think that will work, though I have never used it.

Crankpuller 1 I bought the Finish Line Teflon, seems very good. I will try also the Shimano one.

+Living Life Probably.
