5 tips for the dArK SoUlS oF pErSoNa gAmEs! To all my fellow megaten vets, feel free to drop a comment letting newcomers know what they should do to have a fluid and easy experience with Nocturne! Thank you all for watching!
Nocturne was what I started with... after that I played Persona 4 and promptly became a mainline elitist. Persona is way to light hearted for me, so it's a series that I now refuse to touch
Going even further than what@@blastshards said, don't horde items like you do in other RPGs. Use items to target weaknesses, counter debuffs, and so on. And status effects are actually useful!
-Kajas buffs the party by 25% and -kundas debuffs the enemies by 12.5%, always priorize buffs, even in earlier game a lot bosses can remove debuffs so buffs>debuffs
1) If Magatama are shaking really fast they're ganna teach you a skill next time you level, so equip it before your next level up. If it's not, you're a while off learning a new skill. If for whatever reason you don't wanna learn a skill, change to a non-shaking/mastered one before leveling. 2) REMEMBER TO REGISTER YOUR DEMONS. If you regret a fusion, having the demon you liked registed before using it as fodder matters. So many players, even old school ones, forget to register. 3) Despite what I just said, demons aren't pets you're trying to take to the end game. The more they level the slower their leveling gets, so dump those old demons and make way for new ones no matter how cute or cool you think they look. 4) You can't change your mind once you start replacing skills, so be sure you have at least a rough idea what kind of build your MC will have. Once you decide on that build, your demons should cover whatever you're lacking.
#3 is up for debate, if there are demon that had better resistance and special skill than other you might want to keep them just in case, daisoujou comes to mind for this on mid to endgame even if you had trumpeter or other stronger fiends, daisoujou is always my primary support and i always make them inherit either ultra debuff like fog breath or ultra buffer while having at least cover 1 hit dyne spell
@@impalacrush2439 The Fiends are kind of a special case, as they're always OP for when they can be fused (but I believe they all have lower HP than average in SMT3). In general though, the slower and slower EXP build for demons is a deliberate attempt to make players change them. You'll sometimes see first time players trying to hang on to their first demons (or Personas) as if they're Pokemon they've projected personalities onto. :p
Just wanted to say thanks for doing this. It's not often you see someone openly help newer smt fans. You are actively making the smt fan base larger and more approachable. Keep up the great content.
David: Tip 4. Go to Amala Labirynth Noob: OK Random Encounter: Dis appeared, first attack and cast Agilao ... The comfort of death will come, for men and demons alike ...
1) I'm not sure if this would be considered a guide, but using a fusion calculator online will definitely be useful. But if you want to get a handle on the fusion system by yourself, go ahead. 2) Make sure you talk to demons you already have. It will get you out of an encounter if you're about to die, and it's great for getting random items or money. 3) never release demons unless you absolutely have to make room. It's always better to fuse them into something else once they stop being useful. 4) Lastly, half way through the game, it's better to use your money to buy demons from the compendium. If you already have, for example, an Angel, and you registered it, you don't have to get another one, you can just buy it off the compendium. Edit: lol, I guess if you played P5 you already know this.
1. Don't forget to exploit the free healing in the first dungeon 2. Dark Might(if it still has the same name) is good for 100% crit in New Kagutsuchi. Useful for boss and eliminating other enemies when you wanna recruit a demon. 3. Negotiation skills are mostly rubbish, except a few. Make sure you choose the right demon to inherit the negotiation skill. E.g. Letting Scout be inherited by childish personality demon like Jirae is bad, and not gonna work. Give it to adult male demon instead. Seduce for my good looking female demon is my favorite. It helps me recruit most male demons easily. 4. Spending exactly 1000 macca in a single visit in the Junk Shop helps in getting a Lucky Ticket, especially in early game.
Definitely a “only played P5 and P5S” Altus fan, but really looking forward to diving into deep into Nocturne and hopefully getting into the SMT games.
A tip I have for newbies is when you get to a new area stay near the entrance / healing spot and recruit some of the local demons. Talking to an enemy that's the same demon as one in your stock ends the battle immediately. This can save you if you get ambushed, help you conserve resources, or you can use it to avoid having to fight some enemies that may be difficult for your party. I think if you've killed some enemies before doing this you still get the XP and money you would have earned.
Persona fan talking: I played a couple hours of vanilla Nocturne a little while back to see if I'd like it (loved it, looking forward to the port) and here's one thing I found out the hard way: All the buffs and debuffs (or at least most of them) are multi-target. That means Rakukaja buffs your ENTIRE team, not just a single character (there's no Marakukaja), so don't hold off on using the early-game buffs to wait for better versions (like you would in a Persona game).
Im really excited to play this game, bought SMT IV a few months ago and it was one of the most fun games I've played this year! It's not hard whatsoever for me, even when it was my first mainline SMT, the challenge is there but nothing I can't handle, so I think Nocturne will be more if the same in that regard
To add to the combat tips: I recommend you make sure that your demons have the passive "Bright Might" on them for boss battles. This skill will allow them to always get critical hits with their basic attacks during a full Kagutsuchi, which will allow you to earn more press turn icons. This makes boss fights a lot easier.
Great video David. The tips are what I would expect. I would also add Don't play Merciful (apparently that mode is too easy) and play the game twice (once in Japanese and again in English)
I played p5 and p5 royal and loved it, but even though they where my first jrpgs, I went through them comically easy, so I'm looking forward to having a challenge
The only tip i can give is to not fear the game over as long to save in every occasion Learn from every defeat and adapt to the situation, you may end up forced to change tatics and demons aganist some bosses, but it's gonna be worth Don't feel ashamed to ask or to check the wikia
Ironically for the take your time tip, Its really common for me to finish rpgs alot later then most people because of how long I take just talking to all the NPC's and just enjoying each area for as long as I can before I have to move on.
Same. I even finish even later because I have college as well. Sometimes my sessions end with me having just done a few battles and talked to a couple of NPC's
I’m so fucking hype, I am a newby to the SMT series and I just cant wait to play it!, I love the few games that I played from Atlus (P5, P5R, P4G and Catherine FB)
Another tip which sort of plays into tip #2 (exploit weaknesses) imo is "team composition is the name of the game here." A popular early example is Matador. He uses a lot of wind (force) based attacks, so instead of level grinding, replacing your party with enemies that resist, void or absorb force attacks will get you better results. This isn't Pokemon, don't get attached to the demons because you'll be replacing them later with stronger demons.
*This game does not have alignment endings* you just have to watch what you say in the ending and do certain things in the game for the ending you want Hopefully this is the right way cause it's been a while
Number 1 tip: for the first playtrough build a physical damage character. This is all because (kind of a spoiler) the true ending boss only takes 25% of the damage that you usually deal, except if you hit him with a spell that has pierce (that pierces through resistances), which there's only one and it's physical. I didn't know that and I had to load a previous save before that and farm again (yeeeee). You can try to do it with magical but it will probably take a lot of time and items and I don't know if I had enough. For the rest of the game though, I had a blast (literally) with my fire build! Edit: oh yeah another thing: don't fuse the Pixie, trust me.

Just started playing two days ago. I’ve died sooo many times already but it’s fun! Finally beat Matador. That’s when I learned to take advantage of the magatamas and demon’s resistances. Otherwise two shots and I was done.
Yeah I’m gonna need this because I made my mom pick between 1 or 2 she picked 2 which was for me to play on hard I have played SMT before played DDS to the 3rd place but my PS3 IHS plate needs some replacement so I can’t play rn my laptop also can’t run ps2 emu my uncles laptop can but I’m not gonna hog his stuff but I also started SMT 1 already
with some bosses, it might be a good idea to do research on the boss so you can figure things out if you're having trouble with some them **cough** Matador **cough**
Matador was a complete nightmare, i always had ptsd whenever i entered that hallway, he just pops out of nowhere, but dekaja and wind resistance are a must
Im glad your not being pretentious about new fans. I know alot of people who played persona 4/5 are picking this game up for the first time because we had no idea SMT even existed. I don't think games need to be dumbed down but there is a learning curve and i'm glad youtubers who play JRPGS like you are open to new fans.
I played 4, but I bought 3 the other day, fun so far. Thanks for clearing up the level up question I had, I just wanted to know if each of those spirits gave mutually exclusive spells meaning you can't have them all.
Watch the enemies behavior towards buffs and debuffs. Some bosses can use dekunda or dekaja and remove your buff progress. If they can remove debuffs, prioritize buffs, if they remove buffs, prioritize debuffs. Often times it’s a good idea to continue using debuffs if the enemy has a high priority to remove debuffs because this allows you to stall a turn, and that is less turns the enemy is using to kick your a$$.
So far i haven't played one of the SMT games. I wanted to play SMT4, would you do a video like this for 4 aswell? Some tipps for Beginners like me. I only heard that the beginning is just more difficult than the rest of the game for some reason. But it would be great to have some tipps. And thanks for this one. Cause i planned on buying nocturne soon. :)
I played Last Bible 3 for SuperNES my Mother has (forgot if it's apart of Shin Megami Tensei series) , Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey , Persona 3 Portable, Persona 2 Innocent Sin and Persona 4 Golden. Are the only ones i played so far. I might get this.
For me, doing kalpa IS true ending 😅. First of all you must defeat someone special there ) and it IS one of endings option after all. On my opinion it is the best ending option ( cool 😎 one, if you want )
You gotta finish the Amala Labyrinth BEFORE and I can't stress this enough *BEFORE* you get in the final dungeon of the game, try to keep it in mind, I messed up my first True Ending playthrough because of this
Loving the list, all the points are great and I'll definitely check out the Amala Network properly after giving up on Nocturne on PS2 back in the day. One thing I need to get off my chest is point 5. Now, I can't speak for Nocturne and this rule could COMPLETELY apply here, but if anyone's reading these comments and are thinking of playing Final Fantasy 6 I gotta say, get the guide out! It's not that it's a confusing game and easy to get lost in what you're doing, it's more the game has so much depth - in both story and gameplay - that you'll always miss things along the way. Normally, I'd say that was part of the course, however, this game was the first FF game I ever played, and it became what I consider the best game I have ever played. (I like to say SMT 4 & Apocalypse are my favorite games I've ever played, objectively FFVI is just too much of a masterpiece). Anyways, I've rambled enough and I'd never be able to express every reason why I feel so strongly about this, I just believe that for a game as good as FFVI, you need to experience it in full, get every last secret you can get because every single detail is perfect. P.S. No game is perfect, and that's why the evasion stat is screwed on purpose ;) P.P.S. Play on SNES for that crispy, unmissable soundtrack.
Thank you for the tips! I have already seen Nyarly's no buffs/debuffs run videos on nocturne so I am not sure how much the go in blind aspect would work but it should be an interesting experience nonetheless.
@DavidCast has the fact that Sega/Atlus have announced SMT 3 and Lost Judgment for this year with concrete release dates made you more confident that SMT 5 will be out this year as well? I was getting very unsure about getting 5 this year, but I think it could actually happen now.
So basically to simplify what was said in the video: 1. Magatamas, use them! 2. The battle system, learn it! 3. Buffs/Debuffs, USE THEM! 4. The Labyrinth of Amala, finish it! 5. Guides, don’t use them! (Unless you’re stuck in a particular location in which case, please use them.) Here’s some more from me: The Pixie you get at the beginning of the game, keep it until you get to the bottom of the Amala labyrinth. The demonic compendium, use it! Register your demons before fusing them away. Buy every magatama in the game. Feel free to use the SMT Fusion Calculator if you need help with fusing certain demons.
A couple days ago I started playing through IV and I’ve been loving it so far, and I’ve heard that minotaur and Medusa are the hardest parts of iv and for me they weren’t toooo hard. How does that compare up to say matador or something? No matter what, can’t wait to play nocturne for the first time soon :)
@Grandassassin97 ive heard that King kenji is a nightmare too, but so far after medusa the game has been disappointingly easy (but still really fun), hopefully it gets harder
The tip every SMT3 noob REALLY needs: get yourself an Inugami as early as possible, evolve it to Makami and keep fog breath. Get some other demon with sukukaja. Fail to do that and you might drop the game pretty fast
If Nocturne on normal is a 10 what does P5 and other persona games on their hardest levels rank by comparison on a scale of 0-10??? Just wanna have an idea on what to expect.
Excited for Nocturne HD. I will make sure I have this video to help me in my playthrough. My copy had been pre ordered from GameStop. It will be arriving Either from May 27-29. I have an idea of what ending I might aim for, What DLC do you recommend for a newcomer like myself. As always Hee-ho David
I recommend none of the DLCs tbh, thr only dlc thats kind of cool is thr BGM packs for long time SMT fans. Your good with just the base game imo! Oh and I suggest going in blind, dont aim for any of the endings, just go with your feeling when doing choices in thr game! Thanks for watching Heather!
I had to use a guide for Wild arms 3 for a single part and felt stupid for my first 3 times playing it for one password puzzle spent 5 hours each time, now i have the password memorized and didnt need help in my 4th play
Recommending going through the Amala labyrinth...? Not sure about that, myself. I got into the nice situation of going farther than I should've gone, then hit a newly unlocked fight right outside a save point that I was in no way equipped to deal with. My last save was at that save point. I used that one single save slot. Soft-locked... F in the chat for not rotating through save files?
Im blind af in the beginning still tryin to aquire devils and figure it out 1 thing i like is the world map its a cool version of it the game feels hella fresh i finished p5r. Smt is similiar to persona but nothing like it i love it
@@hiro6164 if you play Nocturne first you should have a good enough understanding of the core mechanics to be fine. The main difference is that Strange Journey doesn't use press turn, instead demons of the same alignment as you will add to your damage when you hit weaknesses. If you can get past the learning curve for that, Strange Journey will be manageable
@@hiro6164 I have 177 hours in Strange journey and I can say that usually the common strategie of buffs/debuffs healing and one or two demons to attack can do de work, but in Strange Journey (at least in vanilla) you have a hard time with the heritage of skills, meaning a more specific set of skills can be a pain to obtain if you don't have macca, a source or a good password to summon a demon close to what you want.
i like this game a lot XD can be friend with demon build team but just i have a bit worry about direction i have a terrible sense of direction X....X it is ok ?on this game
I beat the ps2 original on normal and hard, 100% compendium, and true demon ending. Uh, the game IS hard, what are you talking about?? Random battles every 2 seconds. Attacks from behind that kill you. Random crits on MC that wipe you. Once you have 50 hrs in, did most of Amala, memorize enemy weaknesses, and grinded your party....then it is tedious but not hard. You can still get 1shot until youre >lvl 80s. I love this game, but have some damn perspective. Even at level 99 with good party final true demon boss takes over an hour. Maybe your definition of “easy” is different than the English meaning.
I'd say just one of those is more than enough already. Like you can either get the easy difficulty or just the paid cheats but both of them it's kind of overkill

Just started playing two days ago. I’ve died sooo many times already but it’s fun! Finally beat Matador. That’s when I learned to take advantage of the magatamas and demon’s resistances. Otherwise two shots and I was done.
This is my first actual SMT game that isn’t Persona
Nice have fun
Same
Just got the game and this is super helpful, thank you 🙏
Great video dude! Excited to start this game when it finishes downloading ☺️
Thank you! 😁
Your mom rocks 🙌
@@DavidCastJRPGs 1st: thank you 2nd: 😭
in the beginning: farm some low level pixies for the inventar. they can use dia (healing) in the menu. so you can heal you after every battle
when I can go to labyrinth ?
with some bosses, it might be a good idea to do research on the boss so you can figure things out if you're having trouble with some them **cough** Matador **cough**
Matador was a complete nightmare, i always had ptsd whenever i entered that hallway, he just pops out of nowhere, but dekaja and wind resistance are a must
I pressed like in the first 5 seconds, and never been to the channel. you're just so likeable immediately!
Aye thank you so much mate! 🙏
Video starts at 1:51
I'm excited for Nocturne!
1:43 into the video I noticed that the desk has a shelf attached to it and immediately stopped to go "Oh FUCK"
How much of the Amala Labirynth can I do without locking myself into the ending related to it.
as much as you want, as long as you don't go to the elevator at the very end of the labyrinth.
Just dont go down the final elevator
@@The_Pikaboi Ok so I can do the rest of the content down there without worry thats good to know :)
Can’t wait. Pretty excited
thanks for the tips, Pre ordered the game for my switch recently so I'm hella excited lol
Thanks for the tips! This game kicked my ass when I was a young teen and I haven't played it since... until today lol I'm ready to finally beat it
I played 4, but I bought 3 the other day, fun so far.
Thanks for clearing up the level up question I had, I just wanted to know if each of those spirits gave mutually exclusive spells meaning you can't have them all.
Thanks for the tips 😁
Interesting line up!
For me, doing kalpa IS true ending 😅. First of all you must defeat someone special there ) and it IS one of endings option after all. On my opinion it is the best ending option ( cool 😎 one, if you want )
New player here i just want to know how to get the true ending. like do i have to talk to some one or take a specific path ?
Finish the Amala labyrinth for the true ending
You gotta finish the Amala Labyrinth BEFORE and I can't stress this enough *BEFORE* you get in the final dungeon of the game, try to keep it in mind, I messed up my first True Ending playthrough because of this
You might want to use a guide for only this section if you're going blind.
Trust me, the dungeon is a pain to get through, especially the final level.
There is no true ending. Every ending is equally valid.
@@Skallva no the beating lucofer and becoming a new demon to challenge heaven is the cannon ending. Aka the true ending.
P.S. No game is perfect, and that's why the evasion stat is screwed on purpose ;)
P.P.S. Play on SNES for that crispy, unmissable soundtrack.
These are good tips man keep up the good work your a legend 🙂
Thanks for your support man!
@@DavidCastJRPGs no probelm man
Is a Demi Fiend magic build viable? I'm thinking of doing that
Yep you can do that!
@@DavidCastJRPGs any suggestions besides elemental coverage and man's boost?
Thank you for the tips! I have already seen Nyarly's no buffs/debuffs run videos on nocturne so I am not sure how much the go in blind aspect would work but it should be an interesting experience nonetheless.
Thank you! I hope I get to buy the game when it comes out
Great tips!
I am gonna take my time with this game anyway, its big and games like this i love to explore every nook and cranny :)
in 5:34, you said "-kunda" spells raise your stats
however it should be "-kaja" spells
@DavidCast has the fact that Sega/Atlus have announced SMT 3 and Lost Judgment for this year with concrete release dates made you more confident that SMT 5 will be out this year as well? I was getting very unsure about getting 5 this year, but I think it could actually happen now.
I see where you are coming from, but ive always been pretty confident about SMT V making it this year. I think E3 is where its at!
So basically to simplify what was said in the video:
1. Magatamas, use them!
2. The battle system, learn it!
3. Buffs/Debuffs, USE THEM!
4. The Labyrinth of Amala, finish it!
5. Guides, don’t use them! (Unless you’re stuck in a particular location in which case, please use them.)
Here’s some more from me:
The Pixie you get at the beginning of the game, keep it until you get to the bottom of the Amala labyrinth.
The demonic compendium, use it!
Register your demons before fusing them away.
Buy every magatama in the game.
Feel free to use the SMT Fusion Calculator if you need help with fusing certain demons.
I know someone probably told newer players this but keep the pixie you get at the beginning of the game she's important for a later dungeon
Definitely going to grind in the Amala labyrinth
another tip i think newcomers should do is keep fusion demons constantly
Good point!
I May check a guide to know where the point of no return for the endings are besides that only if I get stuck
Thank you for this video It’s my 2nd SNT game ( my first was SNT 4) and I need all the help I could get Lol
Awesome! Thank you for watching! 😁
Matador is similar to Medusa! Easy if you know what you are doing!
@@DavidCastJRPGs Thank you! Thats really good to know
Imo matador is way easier than 4s bs early bosses
@Grandassassin97 that Mfs worse doesn't mean minotaur and Medusa Don't suck as well
@Grandassassin97 ive heard that King kenji is a nightmare too, but so far after medusa the game has been disappointingly easy (but still really fun), hopefully it gets harder
The tip every SMT3 noob REALLY needs: get yourself an Inugami as early as possible, evolve it to Makami and keep fog breath. Get some other demon with sukukaja. Fail to do that and you might drop the game pretty fast
Nocturne on normal > Persona 5 on merciless
Can someone pls make a SMT for dummies because tbh I have no idea what I’m doing. 😅
Your avatar resembles the HD model of Hijiri with short hair.
Smt master race.
F in the chat for not rotating through save files?
im new to persona not smt i played apocalypse on the 3ds and enjoyed it so im buying this for sure
5 Tips for Beginners:
1- Get
2- Good

Yes, Nocturne Press Turn is the best JRPG battle system
Im blind af in the beginning still tryin to aquire devils and figure it out 1 thing i like is the world map its a cool version of it the game feels hella fresh i finished p5r. Smt is similiar to persona but nothing like it i love it
It's stupid how you can't get to lucifer in the normal game without paying for the chronicle dlc
SMT Nocturne A.K.A Tatto Boy simulator
*Beast Eye*
is strange journey as challenging as nocturne?
Strange Journey can be pretty difficult in places, but as long as you prepare properly it's manageable
@@salsamonkey65 but you need experience to be prepared right? i want to play it blind after beating nocturne
@@hiro6164 I have 177 hours in Strange journey and I can say that usually the common strategie of buffs/debuffs healing and one or two demons to attack can do de work, but in Strange Journey (at least in vanilla) you have a hard time with the heritage of skills, meaning a more specific set of skills can be a pain to obtain if you don't have macca, a source or a good password to summon a demon close to what you want.
ic thanks for your answers.
Only tip is level grind like hell, this game in unforgivingly hard. Expect to see the game over screen at least 3 to 4 times per hour
Spam lunge to demons its worth it
i like this game a lot XD can be friend with demon build team but
just i have a bit worry about direction
i have a terrible sense of direction X....X it is ok ?on this game
i disagree about going in blind my experience was misery almost dropped the game best tip i can give is save every chance you get
Save often should be one.
just max luck has fast has posible and you enter easy mode
If you're playing with the Dante DLC, pick heads.
Almost a week to go!!!
Pick up smt 3 . Part 1 start crying
i will play shin megami tensei 3 nocturne hd remaster on merrciful and whith dlc maps.
Thats all good if thats how you went to exprience the game!
I mean sure if you want the experience absolutely ruined
I'd say just one of those is more than enough already. Like you can either get the easy difficulty or just the paid cheats but both of them it's kind of overkill
