- Fela Kuti interview subtitled. I made this edit for my high school students in Los Angeles. I subtitled the video so that they would clearly understand what he is saying. I first heard Fela as a young teenager and learned a lot from his songs. In this song Fela is being Sarcastic of the Democracy (new Christianity) which Europeans (U.S.A) use to justify their continued colonialism just as they are doing in Iraq and Afghanistan. I also changed the word F--- and narrowed the image as to not show the cigarette so that I can show it in school. Thank you for all you comments
no matter how hard they try to make me feel ashamed of my skin, people like Fela make me proud to be African!
hahaha...same here, where are you from?
Be Proud Stand Firm!! You are the queens of the earth
+Mossogbe Camara The shame lies with the white man! That's coming from a white man. I now have to carry the burden of the atrocities my ancestros created then and now. We are lost in a slimey greasy pit of money and greed :-( Enjoy your pride for we have lost ours. Viva Fela Kuti est ces chansons!
to expand the list- people like Mandela, Bob Marley, Lucky Dube and the likes those were the real freedom fighters. I hope to make the list
People like Fela make non Africans feel proud of Africans
It's amazing how he could mask that righteous anger with such a pleasant demeanour.
I agree, I wish I had his composure. Very intelligent African man I admire him.
Libra at it's best ☺
Well said and sooo true
He had a bigger message than Anger, he composed himself so he was able to become the pied piper, prophet for Africa
I know right?
Yet, rather ironically, he's elsewhere charged that Africans don't have to smile all the time--through all the sh*ttiness they perennially contend with!
For me, this man is amazingly intelligent
Thank goodness for an English education
I did the subtitles origivally for U.S. highschool age students. Many have a hard time understanding the dialect and that is the reason why they are not literal and the reason that I changed the word f--k to freak. One has to sometimes follow the rules in order to break them.
Please do you have the complete video or where did u get the video from
Yoruba, Pidgin etc are languages. Dialect is the term used by the coloniser as our language is inferior to them. We are a nation and when they invaded without an invitation they claimed that they discovered us as if we never existed before. Fela was definitely ahead of his time.
you did great work - this will probably be illegal in some states soon, as the post Trump GOP wages war against imagined critical race theory, and starts trying to recolonise the minds of the young
You mean "accent" not "dialect."
So happy to see that there are teachers out there who lecture their students on Kuti. Thanks for the upload.
Saturday night live tupac shakur
I will teach my children such a wise man
As a songwriter, listening to this great Prophet break down his song writing process is just completely mind blowing!! Wow!
Pretty talented most beautiful one... Where have u been, your fans miss ur fire. Much love
Great documentary. If any of you are in London please visit the British library they have an exhibition on west Africa. There is an exhibit on Fela. Real interesting.
Really I wish to get it I'm not in uk
People are so dumb, he explained 1 of his many songs that uses a teacher-student as a metaphor comparing the colonizers from Europe and the colonized in Africa. Of course he knows that black people have a big part to play in their demise. Most of his songs criticized the Nigerian government for wasting/stealing millions. Also he said that it was sad that in Nigeria it was blacks oppressing blacks even though they and every other country strongly opposed the white on black injustice of the Aparth
Yes!
Fela baba, you dey tell dem about dis babylon system that we need to bring down, Your music will forever continue to inspire Afrikan people forever.
#ForeverAfrobeats
Rest in peace legend, your soul live still in Africa 😓🙏🏻
RIP Fela Kuti. African Pride!!!
fuckin genius!!!!! democracy

demo-crazy
crazy-demo
crazy-demonstration.
rest in power Anikulapo'.
Wow really nice edit from the documentary. Thanks so much for posting, I saw this decades ago. It's really applicable to entire colonial countries, like the caribbean the colonial was unquestionable, my father like Fela only woke up to the Double Consciousness when he came to London.
Nice engagement of thought....thought provoking....thoughtful!
There's no need for English subtitles; he IS speaking perfect English, is he not??
I agree
For those who english is not the maternal language (like me)! Sometimes we need!
Leandro boeira like me
Are you saying the deaf don't use UA-cam?
ThIs FaLsE iMaGe MaNiPuLaTeS yOu why are you angry for no reason 😂😂.
Wow you cant help but appreciate his level of articulation, you can sense the wisdom in every cadance he utters, really blown.
His musical talent is profound as well as his ability to articulate his point of view through voice of captivation. ! ! Thanks for posting this explanation . Demo of Crazy
This is the sober and thoughtful Fela, serious but also naturally witty. RIP my brother!
Why changing "fuck the mind of the colionalists" to "freak the minds" in the subs? Let Fela say it in his own words! =)
I could understand Fela pretty well without the subtitles. He's very fluent in it, no doubt to his forced "English schooling." Sure, his accent's thick, but I think that's because he's used to speaking in Nigerian pidgin whenever he was with Afrika 70/Egypt 80/flavor of the week.
Shut up
@@MrSqilzSFU☹️☹️🙃
well, i don't speak english as my native language, and i'm glad he's got subtitles , that helps me a lot!. I would like to see how he continues his argumentation about democrazy !
As time progress things go worse in Africa and Nigeria
True words, Abami Eda, True words
I just want to say thanks about your subtitles, because my english is really poor, and the subtitles really help!
Watched your analysis of the word.... Democracy multiple times. It's my best part.
Only those who meditate will value that.
Fela's words taught so much...
This man was a God - Thanks a lot for everything you did, hope we'll see in Paradise.
African Grooves god
@@ucy7839 African Grooves God
Fela was/is a renaissance man of the ages.
the man speaks humble and wise words
Indeed it is demostration of craziness
Nope
They cut the film when he was about to say" If the teacher makes mistakes, shouldn't the student correct him?" Teacher, don't teach nonsense!
he kind if sounds like Kanayo O Kanayo when he talks
Thank u feal for a reasonable english lesson God bless!
I
Hello, where did this interview came from? I'm working in a documentary about Fela and I would like to find the original material for our film. Is it in a public archive? Thank you very much.
Isabel Castro are you done your documentary? I would love to watch it & share :)
Hey, thank you for uploading this. I am making a video on Fela Kuti's Zombie and primary sources are a godsend! :)
I love fela😍😍.... He's the greatest ..
hard to crack up at the breakdown of democracy. it is indeed a demonstration of craziness, very clear today
He’s right. “Respect” was just another word of Subjugation and Submission.
Teacher!Don't teach me nonesense!Well said Fela!
This is the calmest I have seen Fela
baba fela still dey memory
Very deep and instructive.
Great man!
@ebeledi : Shit, well I'm so glad you were hear to enlighten us all on the evils of colonialism.
You are a legend.
I grew up as An " English Subject" in Ireland in Belfast although I am irish...you couldn't make it up..my friend was imprisoned because he spoke gaeilge...they said we were witholding information ...not just a black person thing ..it was imperialism.
I heard Fela on the stereo about 10 years ago and I was truly amazed by this unique person. Can you tell me alfredmadain where you got this interview?
Lovely...legends had brains . our current leaders cant even make a quarter of it
We need more leaders like FELA
ebeledi and double20, I totally agree with both ur views. Fela is the man, a true legend
Amen Fela, amen.
Very powerful message
When the student makes a mistake there’s teacher will correct him and this saying is applicable in this time.Africa is doing something wrong and the people that brought the democracy are not correcting us ❗️
Proud to be African
Legend ❤❤❤❤
Legend.
noticce how this person subtitled Fela's "to fuck the minds" into "to freak the minds..."
4:26
Preach!!
And to think the English whites embraced his songs which had in-depth meaning of his Nigerian culture 🤔🤔 luv Fela
Fela live forever
I have to admit, I can see why he's so influencial
@cattouf wen the English were in Nigeria thats when the area became "shit". They handed power to one group of people and thats one of the reasons nigeria is in the situation it is in. This same situation is what caused the Hutsi and Tutsi war, there was nothing good about imperalism. before the english was in the place called nigeria it was never "shit".
Does anyone know when this interview was recorded and who interviewed him?
Thanks.
fela is very intelligent its so sad he had to die when i was a year old
Y'all come to fela shrine in Nigeria. You'd love it
The subtitle is uncalled for
For those who can hear (Deaf Viewers)
Could you please remove the advertising? Very disrespectful to the piece. I'm sure you understand what he's talking about, don't you? I was going to post this video and tweet it, but having to watch a macy's commercial is ridiculous. You should be ashamed of yourself for monetizing this video. Believe that money will come to you by the most honorable channels.
from 2:20 or something like this camera is moved a little bit to a right side becouse Fela was smoking a joint and they didnt want to shoot that part.
Fela was an intellectually sound
@Rafielita Well its very good you can understand. However some people may be deaf and may not be able to lip-read, so they need subtitles.
@alfredmadain, this is a wonderful interview regardless of imperialism and hegemony ignorants who love the forced culture more their own. Hopefully, one day they will get their identity and be authentic. By the way, please how possible is it to have the full detail of this interview. When, where and with who? Thanks.
Mr Black President.
Demo-crazy is fuckin-a right!
Fela had his finger on the pulse of it and it's a beautiful thing.
Interesting to note that he was treated just as Jesus was said to have been, and even murdered by them with "AIDS."
The good guys get some good shots off to be sure, but the bad guys always seem yo win, unfortunately, even in my private life, not just on the world stage.
Now, twenty years later, though, we have a bunch of nameless political criminals stuck back in the past and Fela's timeless music left.
Remember, not only in American, but in Africa we were kept from our history and mentally enslaved. Nigeria was an English colony at the time of Fela's birth, so you have to view things from that perspective. But i understand your arguement.
At 60, Nigeria should not be groping in the dark. There have been numerous wasted opportunities, no doubt, but it takes just a right turn at any second for a vehicle in the middle of nowhere to find its bearing.
The term/ideology of modern Western democracy first appeared in ancient Greece. It stems from the word δῆμος; dêmos, “ordinary citizens, common people from a district, in a city-state”) and kratos; “power, strength”.
That does not mean Fela was totally wrong, democracy in ancient Greece (Athena) really was nothing more then a small group having certain political rights such as voting and govern (around 13%)
Also, a lot of democracies nowadays do look more like a crazy demonstration 😂 the real ‘power to the people’ meaning does rarely truly apply.
Fela!!
Truths and facts
Why the subtitles? I can totally understands his english and spanish is my first language....
Great snippet. I love that breakdown on Demo-cre-sy!
I learned something new.
Where can I find this complete interview
All is said still happening
If the teacher teach student and the student makes mistake, the teacher must tell the student that they're making mistakes but the people who thought us demo-cracy are not saying anything even when the mistakes are clear
Demonstration of crase
Real Talk
Legend
Where is the rest of this video!?!
Legend Fela
happy independence day Nigeria!
Tir gan teanga, tir gan anam.
Fela Kuti = BLACK MAN
Long live Baba!!
Fela was a legend

agreed
@youtube why is this video restricted?
Baba ooooooooo❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😂😂😂😂🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤❤😂😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
Hi, Alfred Madain. Would please tell me which film is this?
correction :"Everybody that went to England for studies was a Master"
To study and become a Master . He’s trying to say when you studied abroad and come back home , people will respect you
which interview is this clipped from
This may shock you but Fela Kuti's first language wasn't English my friend. George Bush first language is English, does he speak it well? And he was a president for 8 years.
You just answered your own question.... Money!
Sadly, the colonial mentality continues to exist today. Ask yourself where do middle/upper middle class non-white foreigners send their children for college? They send them to either Europe (especially Western Europe) or to North America. When these children receive their diplomas from these schools they are seen as closer to white and therefore superior. Hair straightener and skin bleaching products are at their all-time high worldwide (Asia, Africa, South America, etc).
The only psycho man that I loved.
I be fella I be black man power
