PRISMATIC Was Probably a LAST MINUTE Addition. Here's how they did it. | Destiny 2 Design Analysis

  • Bungie just revealed the brand new Prismatic Subclass coming to Destiny 2 with the release of The Final Shape. I have a theory that Prismatic may have been a last minute addition to correspond with the delayed release date. With only a handful of months to create this game breaking subclass, how is it possible to have done it? From my experience working as a gameplay programmer in the game development industry, here's how I think it happened.

    I think Prismatic was planned, but not intended to ship with the Final Shape originally. Potentially, they had planned to roll it out along with Episode 1 or 2, then moved up the timeline after delaying the game. Either way, I think the delay was KEY in bringing it to game at the launch of Final Shape.

      A new subclass will never launch with a episode/ season
      They save the best stuff for the dlc as thats when they make the most money lol.
      At best it was meant for the next dlc / d3

    I think it was planned. Look at the pre order fusion rifle, it fits the theme perfectly

      I think it was something being played with but was scrapped for “what’s next” but then pulled it back out when they did the delay. I bet that’s what happened with the enemy type too. They were probably already working on an entire enemy class and then felt like they only had enough time for one, so they dropped them. Then pulled it back out with the delay

      Eh i mean the art style was there from lightfall. Not like the neon purples and pinks weren’t already being established.

      I see your point, but game mechanics aren't entirely the same as concept design / artistic design

    Remember the leaks from the emote, look at them again. It shows the icons and stuff and as it looks this is a red subclass

      There was probably was / Is a red subclass in the works but won't be here for another few years

    I “feel” like they were thinking about Prismatic subclass, & maybe working on it for D3 or new episodes BUT after those low LOW preorder numbers things changed.

    While I appreciate your insight I’m of the belief this has been in the works for much longer then the delay. The delay was probably more tied towards the pending layoffs than anything. Sure it gave them time to polish things up but they obviously couldn’t launch knowing a major restructuring was on the horizon

      It's definitely possible! Since we're not inside Bungie we'll never know for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if it has been in the works longer than I think

      @@RazekiYTi think they wanted to keep it as a surprise especially for the enemies. We have complained about there not being anything to catch us off guard with these new expansions.

    It definitely was planned, but I'm guessing it was meant to be more of a subclass 4.0 for a later release. When moving it up the timeline to final shape after the initial backlash, they had to tweak it to be more of a standalone kit rather than an upgrade to the system we currently have.

    It was pre-planned for sure. There was plenty of little hints. But the pre-order fusion rifle is one of the biggest signs. Even the red subclass leak was probably prismatic when you look at the icons. I think they just needed more time to get it ready before showing it off.

    I feel like what they showed us in the deep dive article of curated prismatic abilities is meant to ease us into what they intended to do later for how strong it’ll be as they add more subclass aspects, abilities or prismatic specific fragments. Not even to factor in the exotic that will Combo exotic perks to juice prismatic more.
    Like PVE strand out the gate ranged from OK to Average depending on what class you played. Some time goes by and Banner of war bursted through the door making strand a serious contender on the PVE side.

    I believe that Bungie has two whole classes planned and that isn’t wasn’t going to ship with FS but I feel like with the sentiment they had gotten. The ideas and some the work was already done and so therefore they had to bite the bullet and ship it with FS.

    I don't think you're necessarily wrong, but also, it's very likely Bungie staffers knew about the delayed months before they announced. In other words, it's also safe to assume a longer time line than 3 months; if senior staff were pulled off Episode 2/3/4 to assist, an extra 4-5 months makes everything you're saying here quite plausible. However, there's also the Dread to consider. In the original reveal, one of the devs said "The Revenant is the new enemy you'll be facing in the Traveler" meaning at some point I think most of the Dread got cut out of the game in a half developed state, then delay hit and they got the opportunity to finish their work. None of the Dread appeared before now, except the Revenant.

    I really like this analysis! To add to some of this, bungie as of recent has been releasing things that are maybe a little underpowered and tuning them to get up to par with everything else, that way there aren't as many gamebreaking things that get nerfed to the ground later on. I think they have taken a similar approach with prismatic. They are going to start it off with these limited options, but I would not be surprised if they introduced more throughout the coming episodes. Of course this isn't confirmed, but it isn't unlike bungie in any way to add more to things, especially recently.

    I feel like after the original Final Shape reveal flopped, they started working on a lot of the changes that we saw then, and just needed an extra few months for fixes and polish

    Prismatic could be baked in the beginning. D1 reveal gameplay had a subclass build similar to prismatic. Definitely needed a full scan through still

    It was 100% planned, maybe not to the point that it was when we just now saw it, im sure theres been vigorous play testing to make sure everything flows properly, maybe they used the 3 months to polish it, idk, but it was definitely planned

    Actually very wrong, they had prismatic planned the whole time. In the "Destiny 2: The Final Shape | Reveal Trailer" in the end when all the guardians line up the hunter has the prismatic glow around them we just didn't notice it. They were probably just letting things cook before revealing them in full, Bungie did not slap together shit in last minuet.

    When it comes game development how important is a actual degree in getting a job?

      Honestly it's probably not as important as you'd think. Having a degree from a good college will definitely help to get your resume noticed, but what is more important are you actual skills, and any projects you've worked on. Plenty of programmers with CS degrees apply for game programming jobs, but don't have much experience specifically in making games. So they might be a fantastic programmer, but having the specialization is much more important!
      In short, a degree is not required but helps in landing a job, and the best way to stand out is actually by projects and relevant experience!

      @@RazekiYT in your experience how valuable do you think a fornite creative map is for a resume ? I'm currently learning verse as its beginner easy and wanted to know if my project would mean anything

      @@Boushado custom fortnite maps are a great way to start learning level/map design! Pretty much any experience you have will help. I would recommend starting in the fortnite editor, then moving over to UE5 or Unity once you learn the basics, since those are the engines you are most likely to find companies using

    They also have the Sony team that probably helped out in a pinch...Sony didnt spend that billion for Bungie for no reason. They have to get a return on their investment.

      Icarus is key part of solar warlock identity and prismatic seems like a master of none type (which actually has me worried it will end up rly weak tho that’s probably y there’s extra perks with that translucent mode) plus they’ve just made new aspects which everyone will want to try it be bad design to not have it on the new subclass forcing ppl to play old ones to use em.

    I just want Icarus fragment. Can’t be overly complicated as it’s a copy paste nothing ties to it, just movement oriented. Thinking of blinking then Icarus around a corner blinking again while still in air into a phoenix dive 🤩 that’s what I need 😂

      Bungie already stated that they want the Hunters Prismatic aspects/abilities to be focused on agility.

      Funny how warlock is at the bottom of usage rate and they decide to give all the movement to the other classes 😔 this isn’t balanced it’s a warlock massacre

    I don't mean to offend, but Destiny is a much more complex and high-quality game than any free-to-play MOBA currently in development. Just because you're a game developer doesn't necessarily mean you understand the time commitment required for developing content for a game like Destiny.
