- James Sawyer, estate agent at Whatley Lane Bury St. Edmunds office, proved himself to be the host with the most, winning Channel 4’s ‘Come Dine With Me’. James produced a fine dining menu with wine pairing for each course.
James is featured in the first episode of the new series, in and around Bury St. Edmunds, pitched against a West Indian cuisine and an American ‘Hoetany’ themed evenings.
Paula's act got old quick..

Well that was fun! James was a nice chap but I was surprised to find myself warming to Julie (the American) as, despite being condemned as 'loud', she seemed very together and fun! Gosh what is the world coming to?

Not typical American!! I'm American...from South Louisiana...I have an allergy to loud people...and I have never had or made any American food that looks like that! If I ever go to Oklahoma...I will bring bag lunches...wont be eating from that state! Julie though, seems super nice and like tons of fun!!! Paula though...lawwwd!!!!😓
Of course they aren't going to pick typical Americans. Besides the low number of American ex-pats that apply for a British cooking show, the show only wants interesting or different people. No one would watch a show where all the contestants were boring plain Joes and Janes. Do you really think all women from Trinidad are as thirsty as Paula? Or all DJs are such goofy Dads? Don't forget the posh eyecandy. It's a TV show not an average representation of any demographic.
Jeaux ~ you "gotta" know that Julie is NOT typical of us all. I found her to be a sweet gal for the most part. And, take it from one who visits Oklahoma often & has lived in Louisiana (Shreveport), there is no difference in the mix of folks one finds in either area. Also, same thing for food, so don't brown bag it! LOL

Julie did not sound like she was from Oklahoma. She sounded more mid western to me. There were a few times she seemed to lay on a thicker accent, but it seemed more of an act. Her food seemed more mid western as well. At the end of the day this is just a reality tv show and people can choose to be whatever they want or however over the top or underwhelming they want to be 😂
Not everyone from the US gives into their colloquial accent. It's possible to keep it to the neutral American accent. Think of a National US newscaster.
Oklahoma's like every other state in the Union: they've got city people and country people. Folks in the country have rural accents, people in the city don't.

Lovely to see an episode where the contestants are not at each other's throats. Take note 'producers'! We don't always want to see people at each other's throats. A week of convivial conversation and company is also very rewarding to us viewers!

I really wish all Brits wouldn't immediately think ALL Americans are loud. I'm so quiet you have to ask to me speak up, I can't stand loud people and Julie would drive me crazy. There is nothing worse than a loud woman, men can get away with it much better but I prefer quieter people.

These contestants were all told to play up certain parts of their personalities. Julie was obviously told to play up being the boisterous American, Paula played up with seductress, James played up the British gentleman and Phil played up the everyday bloke to make the episode more interesting.
ALL Americans AREN'T LOUD, but this woman is just awful.

I'm an American...I'm not loud...I've never eaten or heard of funeral potatoes....I dislike sweet sauces on savory foods...Given the vastness of the United States you will find many different regional cuisines....Julie is from the Midwest so perhaps those foods are what she grew up eating....I recall many over the top,loud and impolite hosts and guests that were natives.....

As an American, I gotta say, Julie was definitely advised to be as cartoonish as possible. And James was definitely enjoying the attention. Everyone's complaining about Paula, but James was definitely encouraging the behavior... I'm an American and I am not an America fan lol.
