Before they changed the car from that Suzuki Liana, he was beaten by Ellen Mcarthur, she had (probably still holds) the world record for the fastest solo circumnavigation in a yacht. Edit: She did that in 2005, was beaten in 2008. But she's still only one of four people who managed a world tour without stopover or assistance. She did it in 71 days. (Some quick Wikipedia-ing.)

I’m glad you put that on here. I remember being a little bit fed up of hearing about the “oh-so-bloody-wonderful” Ellen McArthur at the time. Then she was on Top Gear, I watched the interview and I was instantly hit by all the things that everyone must’ve noticed before me. Charismatic, humble, funny, just a joy to watch. I’m gonna try and find that clip, might be worth recommending to KB.

lawsuits for injuries wouldn't even be a thing if you had universal healthcare. The fact that there is a monopoly making people billionaires on people getting sick or dying from injuries, means that people wouldn't be bothered to sue if they were able to get treated without being made bankrupt

It was a feature each week that they would get a celeb to do a lap. They purposely chose mediocre "averagely priced" cars so anyone can participate and change the car every 3-5 years. They even do a separate board for F1 and rally drivers, who seem to take it more seriously than their actually championships because they've kept the same car for them for the entire shows life, so they get to compete against all the most famous drivers like Schumacher.
After Jonothan Ross got his BBC chat show cancelled there was a sudden re-booking and Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz went on Top Gear instead, Tom Cruise was like a 5 year old let loose in a candy store he was so excited xD
Simon Cowell takes it really seriously and came back later on to try and take the lead back.

Had to check and it turns out that Jimmy Carr was beaten by Ellen MacArthur by 0.2 seconds (total time 1:46.7) before that car was retired.
The interesting fact about the Suzuki Liana from this clip is that it was also driven on the same track by multiple F1 drivers. Kimi Räikkönen did 1:46.1 on very wet track and Lewis Hamilton (won F1 championship 7 times) did it in 1:42.9 and the best time ever was 1:42.2 by Daniel Ricciardo.
So even though Jimmy Carr was driving as fast as possible, the best F1 drivers did it 4.5 seconds faster over the same lap in the same car!

I did an exercise with your troops near Louisiana and drove to Dallas for my RNR down one of those long straight roads in what can only be described as a monster of a hired vehicle. I stopped off at a small shop in the middle of nowhere and was questioned where I was from. Amazingly because I had a northern British accent the shop owner refused to believe I was from England until I did a Hugh Grant impression.

Signposting for villages in the in the UK is determined by local rivalries.. If the town north of another town.. They will not fully signpost a direct route.
I lived in a market town that has a famous cattle market. And the town 10 miles south of it has the word Market in its name. The local council refuses to send business to that town. Thus they don't sign post it. This is common around the UK.

There is a flip side to the US's notoriously litigious culture. Its justice system is also very efficient - or used to be anyway.
I was too little to remember this, but my late father told me about a time when we were living in Denver in the late 70s, and he - being British and bit naïve about US traffic laws (they are not optional like they seem to be in the UK), he failed to stop at a stop sign and, to his surprise, was immediately pulled over by some kind of stealth cop and ticketed. Ten dollars! Now, ten bucks was a lot of money back then, so my mother leapt into action. She had spotted that the line at the intersection was faded. She had her Kodak Instamatic with her and took a picture of the line (she's still got it!). Then, she told the cop that they'd like to contest the ticket in court, which amused him quite a lot, apparently (crazy Brits and all that).
But, sure enough, they went to the local court a few days later and told the judge about the faded line and showed him the photograph. He was so impressed that he told them that while their defence was somewhat flimsy, he would cut the fine by five dollars as a reward for a good effort.
So that was my folks' one and only experience of the US justice system in three years living there, and they were mightily impressed with it. Much better than the UK's, that's for sure - or so they told me - where some barely trained local magistrate probably would have had them arrested because they had the wrong case in front of them. That can happen!

It went on for a few years but the leader board got full and the car got old so they switched to a second competition; which Jimmy finished bottom of. His aggressive driving combined with a bit of rain and he span out constantly. If memory serves, he stayed at the top until they got a different car, which he was then slowest in (or very near the bottom).

Jimmy has had a lot of work done in recent years, and it is a constant source of jokes on Cats does countdown etc. A bit of surgery on the face, teeth done and hair transplant as well.
