    Growing up in the prairies. Bush parties. Football games. Road trips in sketchy cars with my friends. Race to get home after finishing work on Fridays. Just about all the memories of my early adulthood. The Tragically Hip was a living part of my life's soundtrack. They transcend music for me, the Tragically Hip is part of my Canadian DNA.

    They are uniquely Canadian because Gord Downie sings Canadian stories in a language only Canadians can truly understand. Bill Barilko means little in the US and other countries, but in Canada he will always be the player who scored the goal that won the Leafs the cup... only to become immortal on a fishing trip.
    The Hip understood such Canadiana and mythologized it like no other band before them. They are the ultimate Canadian rock band, and their music will live on from coast to coast for as long as there are Canadians around to sing along.
    Rest assured, Gord, that your musical legacy is now immortal. It will never die! :-)

    You may rank them 1 then 2, or 2 then 1, but Rush and Hip are the two greatest bands from Canada ever. Im glad, even though Im from the states, I lived close enough that my favorite radio station growing up was from Montreal and I got to hear some of the greatness that many Americans miss out on. These two, and others like Blue Rodeo, BNL, 54-40 and The Northern Pikes.

    I'm a canadian who like every other canadian, is exposed to a lot of american artists who mention american cities and landmarks (bob dylan, Johnny Cash, bruce spingsteen) in a very romanticized and poetic way. Really good American songs can emphasize importance into pockets of America even if they really aren't. I'm so glad the Hip were able to create a lyrical mystique around places like Bobcaygeon or the "Paris of the Prairies" like so many american greats did.

    Canadian bands like The Hip are kind of like Canada’s secret sauce. They are not well known elsewhere and Canadians like to hoard them. Rush, The Guess Who, BTO and Triumph are a few of the best known bands (I’m loathe to include Nickelback) outside of Canada (most recently perhaps Arcade Fire) but there’ve been so many others like Chilliwack, April Wine, The Stampeders who deserve mention but never really made it big. The 70s and 80s saw quite a few Canadian groups come on the scene like Loverboy, Honeymoon Suite, Trooper, Glass Tiger, Harlequin, Prism, Platinum Blonde, Streetheart, Toronto plus a host of other quasi one hit wonders.

Well traveled enough to be secure enough in BEING canadian that he doesn't feel the need to flaunt and announce it to everyone within earshot. Never feeling the need to be a "flag waver".

    hope all my fellow Rush colleagues will let me diverge a bit here.
    anyone see The Tragically Hip's final Kingston gig on the wkend?
    Before then, while I had listened to their live cd (but was not played much)
    and knew some of their tunes, it was only both during and after the concert
    that i decided to explore their music more fully...and **** me, is so much of it soooo good.
    I can't get '50 mission cap' or 'courage' or 'ahead by a century' out of my flippin head.
    i've been playing it constantly on Tidal (along with other tunes from the new album).
    the Hip's music affects me differently from Rush's...I am still trying to decipher it).
    But the Hip hits me more viscerally...maybe it's because of what the lead singer Downie is going
    thru, I don't know...I mean did anyone see his meltdown during 'Grace, too'? ...that just gutted me :cry:, seeing his raw vulnerability like that come out: his pain, anger, sadness, his scream against the mean hand dealt to him. Such emotional honesty and courage.
    Gord Downie wipes tears from his eyes in the middle of the Tragically Hip's Grace, Too »
    and that they ended it with an extended version of 'ahead by a century' so Downie could have fun with the crowd and say goodbye, allowing some fab wailing by the lead guitar, made it all that more poignant.
    before I would have arrogantly said that Rush smokes the Hip...not anymore...they both affect me differently...I now endearingly hold the Hip with as much respect as my beloved Rush, just in a different way.
    Peace to The Tragically Hip and all those close to them...may they all (and esp Downie) have much TLC in the trying days ahead.

I'm a Detroiter so got a lot of Canadian influence from Canada radio. The Hip blows Rush out of the game with the feeling I get from listening to so many many of their songs. An awkward spot to put Lee in. Some people feel that the Hip are the best band Canada has ever produced. I'd say they're the best band of "this" generation (the 90s?) while Rush was the best band of the previous generation, and the Guess Who/BTO of the previous decade or generation. They are all amazing - and of course there are lots of other fantastic Canadian bands not being mentioned - but all excel at the type of music they produce. I wouldn't want to say that one is better than the other. But I will say that Canada produces some of the best rock in the world and has clearly been doing so for decades!

    As far as singing about things Canadian, sure, put the Hip top spot. Greatest Canadian band? Not by a long shot in my opinion. Rush, April Wine, Skinny Puppy, Voivod, The Guess Who, Blue Rodeo, Anvil, Annihilator, Strapping Young Lad/Devin Townsend. I may even put Honeymoon Suite above them.

  • @CarlHH777

    Gord is The Hip. Take his voice and fantastic lyrics out and there's not much left. Musically, they don't really bring much to the table, they don't have a "unique" or "original" sound. I always thought Gord was held back by an average band.
    That may be one of the reasons, they never "made" it outside of Canada.
    I'm probably gonna get a ton of hate for saying this.

    • @leafsfan1728
      @leafsfan1728 6 років тому +2

      CarlHH777 While I completely agree with what you said about Gord...I completely disagree with your thoughts on the band. The sign of a great band is one that perfectly compliments the lead singer(One who has great stage presence) and can also perform as a tight unit in a live setting(They succeed at both). Sure...none of them are particularly flashy performers but they each do their job extremely well, which is all you need when you have a Gord Downie at the forefront! Listen to Gord's solo stuff...completely different set of musicians playing behind him, not the same magic!!

    • @leafsfan1728
      @leafsfan1728 6 років тому +2

      CarlHH777 I also disagree with your reasoning behind them not making it outside of Canada. I think the main reason they didn't appeal anywhere else is because of Gord's lyrics. His lyrics are uniquely Canadian which prevents a lot of other countries from truly "getting it".
      Take R.E.M for example. They are almost like the U.S counterpart to the Hip. Eccentric lead singer with interesting lyrics and stage presence with a solid serviceable band behind him. None of the musicians in that band get much recognition...yet they were massively popular worldwide!!

      Sorry you feel that way. IT took me a few years to finally pay attention to them but when I started digging through their catalog I kept finding great songs that moved me. That is what good music should do. During their last tour, they played two shows in Vancouver. Rather than just play the same setlist for many of the same fans, they changed it up completely. I only got tix for the 2nd show. I had tears running down my cheeks while they did Fiddler's Green, partly because I never expected to hear that song played live. Unfortunately the obscure songs played were at the expense of some of their bigger hits and we never got to rock out to Locked In the Trunk of A Car at that show, but I will always remember how emotional I felt listening to Fiddler's Green! Truly a special band who will always be part of my life's soundtrack!

      Depends on what you look at,,, Rush is definitely the most skilled band in the world with their instruments but The Hip is much better lyrically.

    • @lbboardingb3356
      @lbboardingb3356 6 років тому +7

      Lyricism also depends on how you look at it; Rush is more complex and intellectual whereas the Hip are more poetic and folksy. Either way I don't see a need to compare the two, they're both two of the most legendary Canadian bands ever and rightfully so. RIP gordie

    • @FrankonKX96

      He's applauding the Hip here without gushing over them like a hardcore fan. Saying that they don't necessarily have to be Canadian and can be from anywhere and still be a great band is a major compliment. Geddy is usually stoic in his interviews. He acted the same way in the movie "I love you man". To say he's jealous here is inaccurate.

    • @lbboardingb3356
      @lbboardingb3356 6 років тому

      Okay Gordie is a complete legend, but keep in mind we are talking about rock god Geddy Lee here. In comparison to Gord there really isn't anything for Geddy to be jealous of. Whether or not he likes him, well I don't have a clue on whether or not he actually liked Gord.

    I think they were considered a "Canadian" band because so many of their songs were about Canada, its peoples and places. No band from another Country would write a song about David Milgaard's story or about a town called Bobcaygeon. Those songs and others touched our souls because we understood the stories and could relate to them more than most other music. Also they were typically humble Canadians themselves. They weren't about flash and celebrity, they were about the music.
