If Nintendo wanted to eliminate third-party docks they should just charge $40 like all the knock-offs do. The only reason why knockoffs are made is because Nintendo sells theirs for $80.
ReedSolomon The 1st party dock is fairly portable. Many of the 3rd pary docks are of a similar size to the original. The main difference being quality and price.
Or why not charge fucking rediculous amounts ;D like a bunch of wankers, for an item that is worth 20$, then make every other switch dock ruin your system so they can control the market :P? Good Job nintendo, Good Job. All for a fucking useless update which added jack fuck all for the community, and did nothing other than cover their ass from hackers yet was given the title 5.0. Now I'm stuck with an overpriced shitty piece of plastic, which isn't portable and scratches your 300$ tablet.
Switches have been bricked when using third party docks since way before the 5.0.0 update. There are fairly regular reports of this happening on the Switch subreddit. However, here's Spawn Wave with his recently damaged Switch (which happened after the 5.0.0 update): ua-cam.com/video/elOqMKln_WI/v-deo.html&t=11 It also highlights the fact that Switch owners NEED to be able to backup their save games - either to a micro SD card or to the Cloud. Come on Nintendo, get with the program!
Thanks, hope you have a good one. In my mind I thought it would be a 10 minute vid but when I finished filming I had over 40mins to cut down hence all the fast forwarding :-)
Hi again, I just tested it and recorded it in case it did brick my Switch but it didn't. This is what I did.... Using FastSnail dock I displayed it on the TV and used sleep mode, it worked and came back on again when livened up. I then fully shut down the Switch while docked by holding down the power button. Again it came back on again while docked. I did exactly the same on the SFANS dock and it didn't come back on automatically after I powered down fully but all I had to do was pull out and re insert the USB-C plug and then it displayed on the TV. Maybe if you did this test 50-100 times it may cause a problem but from this little test it didn't behave any differently than before the 5.0.0 update :-)
No problem, a big thanks for letting me know and thanks for viewing. Hopefully over the next week or so someone will work out if there really is an issue/link or not from all the reports :-)
My Mate VINCE , are you using the Nintendo branded AC adapter? I wasn't and I bricked my Switch last night using the same FastSnail adapter, the more I research I feel that might have contributed to it, but I'm not sure.
1st time using my 3rd party dock since 5.0.0 update this morning (last dock you tried in UK) Straight to Argos to buy another Nintendo Switch and arranging a repair of my bricked system My advice is use the official dock.. nintendo know exactly what they're doing... my device is 2 weeks out of warranty... as we say on Rocket League.. Calculated!
Thanks for posting, if you have time to post can you remember if it happened as soon as you plugged it or did it take a while after playing and did you use a 3rd party power supply or the Nintendo AC adapter. Cheers Vince
This was using the official charger. I completely powered off the Nintendo Switch before connecting the 3rd Party dock. The Switch flashed up 'Nintendo' then moments later just the joycon icon was showing on screen. It doesn't do anything but this now. Even the power off and power on holding both volume buttons doesnt do anything. What's weird is if i plug this bricked switch into my official dock... the green light on the dock keeps flashing and i have to remove power to the dock to correct the state of the dock. I.e even removing the bricked Nintendo Switch leaves the official dock unusable without disconnecting the power.
No it was the UK version of the last dock in this video. Can't think what the device is called and I've actually thrown it away now understandably. I'm sending the bricked Nintendo Switch back to Nintendo next week and it will be interesting to see how much they want to charge me for the repair. The bricked system has completely drained of power now and it seems that the battery can't be charged. I'd like to think Nintendo would just offer the repair for free as a good will gesture but it will more than likely cost a 3rd of the cost of the product i'm sure. The worst part about this isn't the hardware failure.. it's Nintendo's terrible account management system. I've had a new device since about 1:30 saturday and although i've linked my Nintendo Accounts i cant re-download any past purchases because i need to unregister the live Nintendo Switch console.... can only do this yourself if you have login access to the old device. Customer Support is not open until Monday! No Rocket Leaugue for me this weekend on Switch :-(
I just wanted to add that I've been using the Insignia dock from Best Buy on a regular basis and it still hasn't bricked my switch. Thanks for the test video on the other docks I don't own!
JesseEXE Is your Switch still working fine? I have the insignia dock but haven't been using it due to fear of my Switch getting bricked. Now I want to use it because it has a built in fan and would hopefully prevent the bending and cracking I've been hearing about.
You brave brave man. And it isn't bricking the Switch that is the issue, with Nintendo being slow af with their online system, it's the save games that people are more worried about.
What I love about your videos is that they're so genuine unlike these other youtubers that try so hard with these fancy edits and pimped out "studios". And you STILL have more subscribers than them. Good for you!
Maybe it's coincidence, but when you consider that the dock is doing a significant number of things such as power management, tv output, essentially overclocking the switch and more.... it's easy to think that these "smaller" and "cheaper" third party docks aren't properly configured and reengineered for the exact functions of the Switch. Coupled with the fact 3rd party docks have been having incompatibility issues and bricking switches for some time, I can see how an update focused HEAVILY on anti-hacking can have major issues with a foreign dock that isn't talking properly to it (and there has to be talking between devices for the switch to, for example, tell the difference between being plugged in to charge only or to be docked). Consider the threats and boastings of hardware mods by certain hackers which cannot be patched and Nintendo has alot of reason to have the switch be wary of unofficial hardware.
The docks aren't doing any of that. They're ONLY passing through a video signal to a TV and supplying a bit more power so the switch (not the dock) can run a bit faster. Everything else is being done on the switch itself.
Mikey C They aren't ONLY passing the video though. For the Switch to increase the power output of its hardware like it does when docked, there has to be some form of communication between the dock and the switch which tells the switch that, yes you can draw X amps and I will supply Y voltage so you can increase the output of your hardware. The switch alters between different voltage and amperage inputs and if the false dock fails to deliver that, there is a high possibility of frying the port and or battery, which is what we have been seeing. There is the infinite boot brick etc but as I said, the fact that there is clear miscommunication between the two devices, this could lend support to the idea that 5.0.0 which focuses heavily on stopping hackers, among whom a hardware mod was recently threatened, by implementing measures against suspicious hardware.
Mikey C A quick search would show that the Adapter alone can supply more power to the switch than the dock with the adapter rated around 15V/2.6A or 39W while the dock usb c is rated at 15V/1.2A or 18W. The dock is more than a tv output and power step up for the switch.
I hope whatever Nintendo doing to prevent hacking works or it's going to be a Denuvo situation where people who actually bought the game got slowdowns instead of people who pirated it.
My Switch was bricked *immediately* when I connected it to the Nyko dock. It was playing fine on an official dock in one room, I went to move to the other room where I had the Nyko dock, and as soon as I plugged it in, an error appeared on the screen telling me to restart the system. I hit the power button, and it never got past the boot screen again. I tried numerous reboots, leaving it sit there for minutes or hours at a time with no progress. Can't access Recovery/Maintenance mode, and disconnecting the battery did nothing to help, either. I've used the Nyko dock without issues before the 5.0 update, and this was the first time I tried using it after. It's clearly not affecting everyone, and I'm glad that you didn't have any problems, but it seems clear that there's something about the latest update that's causing a sudden upsurge in random brickings. Time will tell what exactly is going on, but in the meantime I can't play the new Kirby game and I'm out 300+ hours of progress in Fire Emblem Warriors even if I do get the hardware replaced. I don't know whether to blame Nintendo or Nyko, but somebody out there clearly screwed up and I feel like they owe me a new Switch and then some for the data I can't ever get back.
I heard a lot of people had issues with bricking when they put the switch to sleep. I was hoping you’d try that. But honestly that might be irrelevant. Thank you for doing this tho. Haven’t finished the video yet, hopefully everything works out.
Thanks so much for the reply! I hadn't even thought that the change in design could mean a difference between bricking and non-bricking the Switch. I suppose I could always get another official dock and DIY with the parts in that to get the Sfans dock to work properly. I'm pretty sure the insides are identical. I just really don't like the traditional dock design.
Educated speculation from my POV. I've worked with electronics quite a bit, but nothing as complex as a Switch. If I were to try to pinpoint any common device that would potentially brick a Switch, it wouldn't be the dock, but the 3rd party power brick that may come with it. That's not to say that docks can't cause issues, or that Nintendo power supplies can't also fail, but I am very certain that they have much tighter tolerances for quality control. A 3rd party PSU, especially over the complex USB-C just seems to have the most potential to cause problems, IMO.
I use the Fast Snail dock at work so I can play on the tv in between calls, had to leave it recently (yes the switch has 5.0) and came back an hour and a half later and I was still good!
Switch: Oh yeah these 3rd party docks feel so much smoother on my front. No wounds no more Nintendo: omae wa mou shindeiru Switch: Nan-nintendo (bricked screen)
Good video Vince! Although for me personally I think it's likely that what's bricking the systems is the fact that people are using third party cables, whereas you used pro controller cables for your dock and the official one for your potable docks as well. But whatever I don't care because I'm never using a portable dock. Instead I think it's billions times better to go with buying a smaller shell for your official dock and making it yourself
Hiya buddy new to your channel awesome stuff by the way showed my kids you switch XL they loved it ha ha ....just wanted to ask the third party connector USBC to hdmi is just a generic one isn't it
Thanks mate :-) The two 3rd party docks are made by SFANs who I think copied another company and the other one was FastSnail. I presume a lot of them are generic and come out of the same factory with just a different brand name on eBay and Amazon :-)
Hiya pal having a bit of trouble with my third party switch connectors are there any setting I have to fiddle with on the switch I have had two as the first one didn't give any power through I have tried my phone and it works fine but the switch won't go into TV mode ...please help
From what I've heard, the console normally gets bricked during game play of games like BOTW because the console is drawing the most power while playing those games. There is something about the console overdrawing power that goes on.
terryforever84 Sorry, but i am in vacation (and i still don't have tried the dock already). I didn't bring with me the dock because the tv in my room is an old crt tv. But i will try the dock when i come back home. If you send me another message around august 5 i will answer. Bye.
This also could've just been coincidence, but i had my switch in use for a week or two and my third party dock worked fine. As soon as i updated though, when i reconnected the same third party dock, it showed a "accessory not supported" type notification and after that, my switch never took a charge again
Mine was also immediate(not a nyko btw) the only reason i suspect the 5.0 update is that it worked fine for weeks of use before the update, and then it actually notified me that the dock wasnt supported, then after that is when it was fucked up
Thanks for the info, the majority of comments here link to the Nyko dock. Can you remember if you were using the Nintendo AC power supply of or the Nyko one :-) Thanks Vince
Mine bricked as well and I was using the Nintendo A/C power cord not the one Nyko provided. It was put in sleep mode and then flashed an error code. It never went past the Nintendo logo afterwards. I also sent mine in to Nintendo to get fixed. Still waiting on a reply if they are fixing for free or not.
My guess on this broken switch thing has to do with the type of dock and using the power brick that came with the 3rd party docks. In this video you left out a strong detail of the third party power brick. You used DC batteries which are better about the keeping good power sine waves, and the 1st party Nintendo power supply. It is possible that the 3rd party power supplies are not keeping the power going into the switch "clean" Which is leading to popping the power fuse in the system. (I believe this is covered in some other video somewhere but I still believe that this is the most likely scenario.)
I think you are right. Although some people have commented on here that they were using the Nintendo power supply when it bricked it seems that the majority were using the Nyko docks with the Nyko power supply.
Hey Vince I used the FastSnail dock the day I updated it yesterday. My switch no longer can charge and it gets stuck on the logo screen. I don’t what is the real issue, but something 3rd party is the only thing I can think of. I am using a FastSnail adapter, AmazonBasic HDMI cable and the stock AC adapter. Here are my steps that caused it to be a brick: - Connect the system load up a game. - While the game is loaded go to system settings and change the language - changing the language will cause the system to restart and reboot - let it do so and leave the switch connect to the dock I don’t know what could of caused it. The only nonstandard thing I have is the FastSnail dock that I have had no problems using for the last 6 months. My AC adapter is fine as it can charge my other devices. Just trying to figure out what is the root cause of the perpetual loading logo screen and battery unable to charge issue.
Thanks so much for sharing this as if more people comment then a link may be found. After another viewer comments I tested both docks while in sleep mode and fully powering down while 'docked' (connected) and my Switch is still working. I wish I had done this in the video but I didn't think of it. I have recorded it just in case it bricked my Switch. You have probably already done this so apologies if you already know this....Try recovery mode where you hold down the power buttons while booting up after a full shut down. Also there is a weird combination of buttons you can do to bring up a strange USB debugging screen ( I showed it in my 10 things you might not know about the Switch) which may do something. Lastly what I would try is leaving my Switch on until it completely drains of power and then charge it up fully and see if that resets anything. I hope someone may work out a solution for you to get it working again :-)
Below is everything I have done to try to fix my Switch after scouring the internet to no avail :( The battery no longer charges anymore since the issue happened. 1) Hard reset the switch (hold the power button down 13-15 sec) - Stays stuck on the Switch logo screen after the system turns on 2) Hard reset the switch into maintenance mode (hold the volume buttons down and turn on the switch) - Stays stuck on the Switch logo screen after the system turns on Maintenance mode only happens after the boot cycle (which it never gets past) 3) Drain the battery (leave it on the logo screen) - I left the switch on over night to drain the battery. It no longer goes to the "nintendo logo screen" and goes to a "battery depleted screen" - I left the switch plugged in for a day with the factory AC adapter and it no longer charges. There is no charging indicator the battery just does not charge any more. - Yes, my factory AC adapter works, it can charge all my other USB-C devices as well. 4) "Leave it for a week and try again" I really doubt this will work. That solution is not a fix.
Thanks for the list, these are all the things I would have tried. Sorry to hear none of them worked. The only other thing I would try is the boot screen thing, I copied and pasted this from the internet but I showed it in one of my previous videos:power completely off hold the volume down button while still holding volume down, hold power let go of volume down, but not power while still holding power, hold volume up let go of power, but not volume up A second after the Nintendo logo appears, let go of volume up
The battery charge controller could have fried and if that happens the power will not go to battery and battery will not charge (charge controller is requirement to charge because it keeps the voltage and amperage at a usable level [not too high and not too low]) there are actually more charge controller than one i don't know exactly how they work but others have said that the USB C on switch is not a standard micro USB C and can make issue with 3rd party accessory because the 3rd party does not know how to make it work (i don't want to buy a switch now i will wait until a legit emu is made or make my own buy the games i want to play then download them because i only download ROM for game i own).
Sadly, this probably wont happen. As the wii u uses PowerPC architecture while the switch uses ARM. I dont believe its for hacking reasons, as its already been exploited, running homebrew etc. Wii u is back compat with wii because its similar enough architecture to support it. HOWEVER, xbox did it, so I believe it COULD be possible with the switch.
Galactic / Matt yeah, with proper hardware components and a dedicated app, it could happen. However, due to all the components, it will make the special edition dock cost as much as the Switch.
My nyko dock broke my usb C port before the 5.0 update, but it BRICKED it immediately after. Nyko confirmed to me that it was an issue with the dock most likely. Mine (and many of what I read) bricked after being put into sleep mode. You should do a follow up video we’re you boot up a game with online, then put the switch in sleep mode a couple times for 10-15 mins each and see what happens.
You might know by now, but the bricking issues are caused because the Switch is not fully compliant with USB-C standards and it behaves strangely when docked. Systems are being bricked as a result of a power control chip failing, which requires component level repair to replace it
Thank you so much for this Vince. Unfortunately I'm still in a state of uncertainty since my new dock is Best Buy's store brand. It had the best reviews and best price but the internet is telling me I'm an idiot for not buying the 90 dollar Nintendo brand dock. Real asshole, that internet.
In this day and age we've gotten to the point where the majority of docks aren't actually going to brick your switch. They're probably some really cheap terrible ones that will but the majority out there now are not going to. That doesn't mean you shouldn't buy the better quality docks, the ones like the Genki, Jumpgate, Gullkit, and in your case the Best buy branded dock are pretty good and should last a while and almost certainly will not damage your system (note that can't actually be guaranteed for any dock even the official one since any power supply can fail at any time it's just a fact of life). Because third party dock bricking is essentially a trope now (thanks Bob wulff /s) the best way to deal with it is to confidently tell those people off and then use the block and report buttons accordingly when they don't.
My third party dock worked fine like you showed in the video, it was bricked when the console was restarted while in the dock. If you're trying to see if they work or not you need to restart the console while still in the dock.
I think those 3rd party items mainly only damage the switch after being left plugged in or used on a day to day basis from what I've been hearing you won't generally figure out if it breaks it within the first 15 min, I may be wrong though so idk, love your vids by the way very helpfull
The best way to know whether or not they're good is to actually measure the voltage and current on an oscilloscope and see how closely it matches up to the original dock, that'll tell you immediately with absolute certainty just how bad any of these docks actually are. Of course most people don't have oscilloscopes (me included) so that isn't really going to work for most people so the better option is to only buy the good well-known brands, the three that I know of are Genki, Skull & Co. , and Gullkit.
I also have the fast snail dock. The switch bricks instantly , but once I do the reboot where you hold down the power button and volume key for like 30 seconds it comes back on
I think the reason some people brick their systems with 3rd party docks is way they hook up it's natural to lay the Switch flat, but it gets no ventilation that way and its ports are blocked, while running in performance mode. So if they leave it like that and play a graphics intensive game for an extended period, I could see that causing damage.
SAgreatn Spawn wave did a good video trying to overheat the switch. The only way he could get it to overheat was to disconnect the fan. It shuts itself down so you don't have to worry about causing immediate damage although operating it at high temperatures regularly may reduce the lifespan of the switch.
If people are using those Docs and are having issues they are probably leaving the switch lay flat with the screen up which would cause overheating issues because the switch would be laying on it's air intake vents.
any chance you'll be doing this again with the 5.0.1 update? I still keep hearing stuff about people with 3rd party docks running on 5.0 getting their switch bricked on 5.0.1
Do any of these wireless adapter/converters work with multiple controllers at the same time (for multi player)? That's a bizarre limitation of my mayflash adapter.
Nintendo has said that the bricking problem is due to usb cables without 56k ohm resistors. If you use a 3rd party dock, you should also use either the Nintendo brand ac adapter or a usb c cable with 56k ohm resistor.
I have a Kacosata dock which looks like the fast snail dock but I haven't used it much as it crashed my switch a few times when connecting it and I had to hard reboot so I got worried about permanent damage. With all the worries about the 5.0 update there is no way im going to plug it in now as my warranty is expired and i cant afford a new switch. No problems with usb battery packs or my 8bitdo controller.
Jason Kay USB battery packs should be fine. I can't see why they would be a problem (except if they're made faulty. But that's a general problem with any accessory.)
I think I have managed to do that too "craching the Switch". I put my Switch in to the official dock, which was not plugged in to the TV for some reason. When I come back and pull it out of the dock the screen (on the Switch) refuses to turn on. So I tried plugging it directly to the official power cable that comes with the dock and charge indication appeared in one of the top corners of the screen and then went away. The screen still refused to turn on, so hold the power button, until the power off/ restart menu appeared, I selected to power off the system and turned it back on again, it worked like nothing had happened. ------------------------------------------------------ I suggest that you only use the original switch dock, even though I think it sucks that you should be afraid of bricking your switch by using a non official one. I bought a SH350 (a fast snail) dock just before the 5.0 update and now I'm scared of using it.
I have gotten mine to work with a generic USB C hdmi hub (it looks quite a lot like the fast snail one, except it's white). For some reason display output only seems to work at 720p, but it's still better than the huge dock for traveling. I will be using it in the next month, so by the end I will post a video on if it worked for the extended period of time or not.
Is the any case of bricked Switch for using USB 3.1 type C to USB 3.0 adapter? I just want to use my Hori arcade stick directly to my Switch inside an arcade cabinet. Thank You for the video.
Could you try power cycling your Switch while attached to the 3rd party dock please? I'm starting to believe the Switch is most prone to brick while booting.
Hi, I didn't show it in the video because I didn't think to do that. BUT... I got a message after putting it on UA-cam so I tried each dock in sleep mode and also fully powering down by holding the power button down etc. while each portable dock was connected and displaying on the TV and it didn't brick the Switch. I didn't do it numerous times though so maybe if it was done many times over 48 hours then the problem might occur :-)
Great, thanks. Got a TUTUO dock myself, which looks pretty similar to the Fastsnail (also works with alternate power adaptors). Never planned to use this as a complete replacement for the original dock, though. Travel only.
What about rebooting the system with a third party dock installed while battery charge is one of '100%/50%/5%'?What about the possibility of overcharging the battery?
The battery has a protection board that stops it from charging once it's full, it also stops it from over discharging if it's empty. This is an absolute requirement on lithium ion batteries this things can get very dangerous if they are overcharged or over discharged (look at what happened to the Samsung note 7).
I honestly think that maybe there is certain revisions of the Switch or there is certain TV's and monitors that may effect this. There also could be a defect in the chips of those docks or an issue with the memory chip. Spawn Wave said that some people are having Switch's brick when they were first released when he took it apart for the first time and said that's most likely the memory chip failing or got fried. So I think that as well could be a factor in this. But I can't prove these points, but hopefully someone figures this situation out.
I was actually looking for a video where it states if thrid-party AC adapters have now been made compatible to work with the original Nintendo Switch dock set. Becausse when I tried to plug in a 3rd party AC adapter that I bought on ebay into my dock set, it gave me an error message saying that it wants you to use the Nintendo brand AC adapter instead. Has this issue been addressed so that at least some 3rd party AC adapters for the Switch now works with its original dock set?
Coincidence - Well stuff happens, and usually connecting and disconnecting stuff, or switching something on and off does have the tendency to sometimes kill an electric system. As proven, when I replaced the Batteries on one of or Wall-Clocks: Since the LCD-display went nearly unreadable, I decided to switch out the Batteries, taking the old ones out, and placing the new ones inside, following the same alignments as the previous Batteries. But unfortunately, the Watch didn't activate upon entering the new Batteries, so I tested them, and they both hat the 1,5 Volts (AA). Well, sometimes stuff breaks, even when you handle it with care.
Judging by how the one dock makes the screen flash when you connect it, I think sometimes there are just compatibility issues due to design problems with the peripheral and/or Switch. People are quick to sensationalize and say Nintendo is doing it on purpose when Nintendo would not have gone for a standard connector if that were actually the case. All these repairs from bricked systems are costing them money.
Also another thing that people forget is that even if Nintendo wanted to prevent third-party docks in totality they are liable for damages if they intentionally destroy systems. If they wanted to they probably would have gone for something more along the lines of a proprietary video output format or just having the dock firmware be signed in such a way that it can't be replicated on a third party dock and if rejected it would likely either do nothing, just charge the system, or function perfectly while simply not outputting any video (essentially turning it into a fancy charging hub with a non-functional HDMI port).
If Nintendo wanted to eliminate third-party docks they should just charge $40 like all the knock-offs do. The only reason why knockoffs are made is because Nintendo sells theirs for $80.
thats not true, I bought a third party dock because its portable, the switch dock is not.
ReedSolomon
The 1st party dock is fairly portable. Many of the 3rd pary docks are of a similar size to the original. The main difference being quality and price.
They should just make a dock that doesn't absolutely suck. The price isn't relevant.
Do the switch dock mod
Switches have been bricked when using third party docks since way before the 5.0.0 update. There are fairly regular reports of this happening on the Switch subreddit.
However, here's Spawn Wave with his recently damaged Switch (which happened after the 5.0.0 update):
ua-cam.com/video/elOqMKln_WI/v-deo.html&t=11
It also highlights the fact that Switch owners NEED to be able to backup their save games - either to a micro SD card or to the Cloud. Come on Nintendo, get with the program!
Yup :) he said it just might be a coincidence right in the beginning of the video mentioned already cases of bricking
Spawn Wave did take apart his switch which voided his warranty with Nintendo and tried his hardest to overheat and brick it for some reason.
It bricked my Switch after the update. Yes they bricked before but the update made it happen to a lot more people
You're not wrong. But it seems like the 5.0 update made it a lot more likely cause a huge number of people have had it happen in the past few days
M Jons I
I just love that you sacrifice your things for us
True Moon Well, he makes back the money or even moreso
So it is really a sacrifice?
Miya there is no Cloud save on the switch yet so any data on the switch you had will be lost if if your switch is broken and it's beyond repair
J wasn’t before 😛

Thx bro helps a up
"If it brakes I'll make money from you so is ok" 😂😂😂
Lmao
Hello
😆
Kinda true though
I love how real he is lmfao had me rolling!
AWESOME video, Vince! Thank you so much for the info on the update, pretty thorough imo. Happy st Patrick's day to you, too. 👍
Thanks, hope you have a good one. In my mind I thought it would be a 10 minute vid but when I finished filming I had over 40mins to cut down hence all the fast forwarding :-)
"I'll just make the money back off the views of this video."
I have never heard a UA-camr more sure of ad-revenue than this.
Vince the most common comment about bricking 3rd party docks comes from the console being powered off and back on while on the docks.
Interesting. I will test that now and get back to you.
Glad to hear mate! Thanks for risking your hardware for the community!
I don't get why people don't trust you, Vince. You're so genuine
Thank you :-)
I just don't trust 3rd party docks
Exactly the result nintendo was trying to generate by altering the voltage settings in 5.0.0.
Mikey C, is this what you think has happened (altering the voltage) or did you read this somewhere?
Thanks :-)
As some one that just payed 100$ to have my switch replace because i use a third party charge no i dont trust any non switch chargers
Risky Vince is at it again lol.
People say curiosity killed the cat

I love extended videos like this! Thanks My Mate Vince
The 8bitdo adapter works just fine. Also it has motion support for the dualshock 4
Mayflash also supports it
I love this guy he does the most insanely awesome things to his consoles lol.
You are such a daredevil when it comes to electronics.
1st time using my 3rd party dock since 5.0.0 update this morning (last dock you tried in UK)
Straight to Argos to buy another Nintendo Switch and arranging a repair of my bricked system
My advice is use the official dock.. nintendo know exactly what they're doing... my device is 2 weeks out of warranty... as we say on Rocket League..
Thanks for giving all the information, that is very helpful.
Nyko dock ?
No Rocket Leaugue for me this weekend on Switch :-(
Really appreciate all the stuff you try out in these vids
Dang, about time there are vids of this topic. Thank you for the vid, interesting proofs and references we can refer too
Oh thank god I thought Vince’s switch would completely shut off and Vince would just start freaking out I was scared that would happen
Dont worry cause he makes like 300+ from the vids
Hey Vince I love your channel even as "rough" as the videos are. You always give good info and helps a lot of people.
It really helps out a lot that you provide these infos asap. Thanks for doing so!
My Mate Vince...
Youse A Brave Man...Good Luck, Steady On...
Thanks for the informative comments :-)
I hope whatever Nintendo doing to prevent hacking works or it's going to be a Denuvo situation where people who actually bought the game got slowdowns instead of people who pirated it.
you always come in with the clutch, this is why i subbed lmao
Oh my god, this happened to me yesterday. 😢
Thank you for risking your Switch. God bless you.
Thanks for sharing the information :-)
Did you send it back to Nintendo?
I thought with the bricked systems it was happening whilst it was docked and updated automatically .
Nice to see that your testing possibilitys.
I heard a lot of people had issues with bricking when they put the switch to sleep. I was hoping you’d try that. But honestly that might be irrelevant. Thank you for doing this tho. Haven’t finished the video yet, hopefully everything works out.
Thanks for this Vince! I've got the Sfans dock, but I've been reluctant to use it since the update. At least I know now that it should be okay.
A 3rd party PSU, especially over the complex USB-C just seems to have the most potential to cause problems, IMO.
great video i don't have a switch I'm getting one next month i love ur videos
I use the Fast Snail dock at work so I can play on the tv in between calls, had to leave it recently (yes the switch has 5.0) and came back an hour and a half later and I was still good!
I saw DOOM in your Games library. Pretty crazy that Nintendo is allowing those ratings now. It's awesome.
Novisor novisor you will be one of us
Switch: Oh yeah these 3rd party docks feel so much smoother on my front. No wounds no more
Nintendo: omae wa mou shindeiru
Switch: Nan-nintendo (bricked screen)

All I've ever wanted was a reply from the legend himself vince😆
Legend...I wish!!!! Here is your reply. Hello Alex, thanks for watching :-)
Hi past Alex, you got your reply 😅
@@Mymatevince Thanks for the reply, I still watch and love your content to this day. 3 years later this still means a lot.
I bought the Switch dock extender cable and it works fine for me.
I have the same third party mini dock (not the Niko one) and now i am sure that i could use it.
THANKS !!
Till today, your switch still ok?
i also got a 3rd party dock, Coov SH350, but i not dare to use....
terryforever84
Sorry, but i am in vacation (and i still don't have tried the dock already).
RIP my swith 😢
Mine was also immediate(not a nyko btw) the only reason i suspect the 5.0 update is that it worked fine for weeks of use before the update, and then it actually notified me that the dock wasnt supported, then after that is when it was fucked up
Thanks for the info. Were you using the Nintendo AC power supply or a 3rd party one?
My Mate VINCE i was using a third party power adapter, but that also didnt give me any problems before this incident
Exactly what happened with mine!
I just today had to send in my Nintendo Switch after it bricked. Nintendo is repairing it for free. I was using the Nyko dock.
Thanks for the info, the majority of comments here link to the Nyko dock. Can you remember if you were using the Nintendo AC power supply of or the Nyko one :-)
Thanks Vince
My Mate VINCE I was using the nyko one
Thanks for the reply :-) Glad you are getting it done for free.
JoJo San yeah mine happened exactly the same way
You're the man Vince!
Best bet, just use official 1st party products
Great vid! What do you use to edit your videos?
Man i really love you,really
I prefer you than my actual mates
Great video, very helpful. Am I right in thinking that a Wavebird controller would still work please?
Hey Vince I used the FastSnail dock the day I updated it yesterday. My switch no longer can charge and it gets stuck on the logo screen. I don’t what is the real issue, but something 3rd party is the only thing I can think of.
I am using a FastSnail adapter, AmazonBasic HDMI cable and the stock AC adapter.
Here are my steps that caused it to be a brick:
- Connect the system load up a game.
- While the game is loaded go to system settings and change the language
- changing the language will cause the system to restart and reboot
- let it do so and leave the switch connect to the dock
I don’t know what could of caused it. The only nonstandard thing I have is the FastSnail dock that I have had no problems using for the last 6 months. My AC adapter is fine as it can charge my other devices.
Just trying to figure out what is the root cause of the perpetual loading logo screen and battery unable to charge issue.
It might be happenstance or unique cases. Will never know since I can’t test at scale.
1) Hard reset the switch (hold the power button down 13-15 sec)
- Stays stuck on the Switch logo screen after the system turns on
2) Hard reset the switch into maintenance mode (hold the volume buttons down and turn on the switch)
- Stays stuck on the Switch logo screen after the system turns on
Maintenance mode only happens after the boot cycle (which it never gets past)
3) Drain the battery (leave it on the logo screen)
- I left the switch on over night to drain the battery. It no longer goes to the "nintendo logo screen" and goes to a "battery depleted screen"
- I left the switch plugged in for a day with the factory AC adapter and it no longer charges. There is no charging indicator the battery just does not charge any more.
- Yes, my factory AC adapter works, it can charge all my other USB-C devices as well.
4) "Leave it for a week and try again"
I really doubt this will work. That solution is not a fix.
Thanks for the list, these are all the things I would have tried. Sorry to hear none of them worked. The only other thing I would try is the boot screen thing, I copied and pasted this from the internet but I showed it in one of my previous videos:power completely off
hold the volume down button
while still holding volume down, hold power
let go of volume down, but not power
while still holding power, hold volume up
let go of power, but not volume up
A second after the Nintendo logo appears, let go of volume up
The battery charge controller could have fried and if that happens the power will not go to battery and battery will not charge (charge controller is requirement to charge because it keeps the voltage and amperage at a usable level [not too high and not too low]) there are actually more charge controller than one i don't know exactly how they work but others have said that the USB C on switch is not a standard micro USB C and can make issue with 3rd party accessory because the 3rd party does not know how to make it work (i don't want to buy a switch now i will wait until a legit emu is made or make my own buy the games i want to play then download them because i only download ROM for game i own).
I wish Nintendo made a dock that supports back compact. I still stuck in TTYD.
That's actually a good idea, you put the discs in the dock and it goes to the Switch.
basically an external disk drive/game reader basically, infact thats not even ridiculous either
NonsensicalVids that would be nice, but Nintendo doesn't want any hacking, so it will never happen.
Systems are being bricked as a result of a power control chip failing, which requires component level repair to replace it
I think it's the third party power supply that is killing the switches
Isaac Millan spawnwave used the Nintendo power supply and still got his Switch bricked
Maybe hold back for a few weeks just to see the outcome. You should know by then what is happening :-)
Because third party dock bricking is essentially a trope now (thanks Bob wulff /s) the best way to deal with it is to confidently tell those people off and then use the block and report buttons accordingly when they don't.
very nice, keep testing please, test with 7.0
im pretty sure spawn wave used the power adapter that came with the nyko dock. Many people have said this is what causes the bricking issue.
I've been using the Fast Snail for months now. No problems so far.
Roscoe Jones , careful, mine brick my switch last night.
Joe Weaver I don't really like it because it ls not as seamless as the official dock
My third party dock worked fine like you showed in the video, it was bricked when the console was restarted while in the dock. If you're trying to see if they work or not you need to restart the console while still in the dock.
Your the best Vince
The switch bricks instantly , but once I do the reboot where you hold down the power button and volume key for like 30 seconds it comes back on
nice video as always
Thank you so much for this. 🙏🙏
You do realize that the ventilation is beside the audio port.... the back are speaker holes...
SAgreatn
Spawn wave did a good video trying to overheat the switch. The only way he could get it to overheat was to disconnect the fan. It shuts itself down so you don't have to worry about causing immediate damage although operating it at high temperatures regularly may reduce the lifespan of the switch.
Watched this when it first came up... Have you continued to use the Portable Docks without issue?
Nintendo Should Make Their Own Portable Dock
If people are using those Docs and are having issues they are probably leaving the switch lay flat with the screen up which would cause overheating issues because the switch would be laying on it's air intake vents.
A lot of people have been mentioning that when they have a 3rd party dock in the switch and then go to the 5.0.0 update it bricks.
Hello Vince! What about the male to female usb? I bought one yesterday and now I'm scared to use it
Also subbed😁
You are my literal hero
any chance you'll be doing this again with the 5.0.1 update? I still keep hearing stuff about people with 3rd party docks running on 5.0 getting their switch bricked on 5.0.1
i hope you get more views on this.
great vid, got my sub
Thanks :-)
5:02 my dude needs to get some furniture XD
Mayflash works again?!?! Yay
Great vid, but personally i dont want to use any dodgy 3rd party adaptors, still great video
Pretty sure a lot of people that bricked their switch were using the official adaptor, doesn't at all gaurantee your safety.
i just hope nintendo releases a more compact/portable version of the dock instead of having to rely on third party products
Or maybe one of the portable docks could get licensed by Nintendo officially.
The SFANS adapter.. The design looks nice but when I receive it, it's becomes a small dock and a disappointed.

Exactly what I was thinking

I have a Kacosata dock which looks like the fast snail dock but I haven't used it much as it crashed my switch a few times when connecting it and I had to hard reboot so I got worried about permanent damage. With all the worries about the 5.0 update there is no way im going to plug it in now as my warranty is expired and i cant afford a new switch. No problems with usb battery packs or my 8bitdo controller.
Thanks for the info :-)
Jason Kay kacosata is only a rebrander
Jason Kay USB battery packs should be fine. I can't see why they would be a problem (except if they're made faulty. But that's a general problem with any accessory.)
Well I have kacosata dock and I was sure that it will be friendly with my switch and yup, that works fine with 5.0.1 :)
------------------------------------------------------
I suggest that you only use the original switch dock, even though I think it sucks that you should be afraid of bricking your switch by using a non official one.
Trt the Nyko dock. That's the infamous culprit. x:
Thanks Mate!
What about if you use a power bank to power the portable dock?
Does that work and how long have you run that for?
What about rebooting the system with a third party dock installed while battery charge is one of '100%/50%/5%'?What about the possibility of overcharging the battery?
The battery has a protection board that stops it from charging once it's full, it also stops it from over discharging if it's empty. This is an absolute requirement on lithium ion batteries this things can get very dangerous if they are overcharged or over discharged (look at what happened to the Samsung note 7).
Well, My Mayflash Still Works So I'm Happy :D
ThePhoenix124 I'm scared it'll brick my switch
TrashBoi Boi lol #pray
As proven, when I replaced the Batteries on one of or Wall-Clocks:
Since the LCD-display went nearly unreadable, I decided to switch out the Batteries, taking the old ones out, and placing the new ones inside, following the same alignments as the previous Batteries.
Do you know anything about the charjenpro dock? I got one a few months ago but now im scared to use it
