8BitDo is easily, imo, the best third party controller you can purchase. Build quality is always awesome.

I like their products, generally, but they are NOT known for their build quality. The number of people who’ve had their 8Bitdo controllers simply break after a year is quite high. At AliExpress prices with coupons, they’re nice values, but not at everyday Amazon prices.

They are some of the best controllers out there, but I always get issues within a year, such as face buttons sticking, or D-Pad inputs that I'm not actually pressing. Not sure why.

Too bad they stop support for their older products, the OG sn30/ sf30 (the ones that were clones of an snes/ super famicom controllers) no longer work with switch, not even using their 8bitdo controller adapter (wifh claims to work with all 8bitdo controllers)
Meaning that at one point the controllers 8bitdo no longer update will stop working with switch.

I can't really justify buying another SN30 Pro (I already have three), but I like the look of the Jade Green one. And it's a small detail, but I think the gold text works well with that green. I think that combination might increase its appeal for Zelda fans even though it's not technically a Zelda-themed controller.
For anyone who may not have used one of these controllers, I can say that it's surprisingly comfortable for first-person and third-person shooters. The sides of the controllers rest nicely on the joint at the base of each index finger as you use the analog sticks and trigger buttons. And that SNES-style d-pad obviously makes the SN30 Pro a great choice for side-scrollers. The only game I don't like this controller for is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Holding the A button while trying to use the right trigger for drifting is uncomfortable for me on the SN30 Pro.

I love my 8bitdo Ultimate for stuff like that. For example, SD Gundam Battle Assault, The "Boost/Dash/Dodge" button is A and your attack buttons are the other three, so trying to combo correctly and dodge accurately and simultaneously is near impossible, but remap one of the back bumper triggers, and you can use it as your dash button and never have to slide to "A" to do any of the fancy stuff. It almost made the game too easy after that. Another thing with those back buttons, Stuff like Metroid Dread. You want to spam your fire button sometimes, and others you want to hold and charge. The times rapid fire is more useful are WAY more prevalent, so using the ultimate software to set rapid fire on the shoot button for that back trigger, you can again still jump and dodge ect while not wearing your thumb out rapid smashing the button.

I got the Jade Green 7 days ago now. Instantly underwhelmed by the Dpad. Coming from the 2DSXL, which has the best possible Dpad ever, the 8BitDo Dpad is just meh. It's great for JRPGs, which I bought it for. But fighting games and platformers, I wouldn't recommend at all
Squishy, stiff, whole dpad can be pushed in a little in the center, left/right inputs an up or down almost erry time when sliding side-to-side. The texture isn't smooth, either, making it a bit too grippy. Might just be me since I'm used to the glossy, smooth, clicky Dpad of the 2DSXL

Should have cleared it up that D-input mode is for old games on PC. So if you play any games before the 360 days, they're bound to support D input. The first 3D GTA games come to mind and also I know they're not very popular but if you have played the original releases of the Devil May Cry series upto 3 SE or Resident Evil 4 (I say not popular because most people just emulate the console versions or play the re-releases), they only accept D-input and connecting an XBOX controller or other X-input device will not work.

It used to be, you went over to your friends house and you got to use the BS "rock candy" or "MADKATZ" off brand third party controller and whined because YOU knew damn well it wasnt as good as the actual Sony/Nintendo 64 one. Now days that trend has swapped... Now the third party 8bitdo and Gulikit are VASTLY better then the first party sony ones. My how times have changed...

Bought one of these back in 2018 to better play dark souls on my switch. It's been a great extra controller in plenty of situations though.
Since I have a 3d printer, I was able to print an extended grip that makes it feel more like the sn30plus. I was also able to print a snap on cover that protects the buttons and sticks. It makes it way better to toss in a bag without worrying about damaging it.

If you're using this for Steam, connecting this controller via X input will make Steam recognize it as an Xbox controller
To avoid that, just connect it to your PC via Switch input. It'll be recognized as "Pro Controller" on Windows. X input is pointless, unless you want to pretend it's an Xbox con? Or if the games don't support Nintendo controllers and you can't somehow bypass that with Steam or something
I also don't rly recommend this controller for fighting games or platformers. The dpad isn't that good or reliable. Luckily, I bought it exclusively for my JRPGs, so I'm not gonna be too worried about random diagonal inputs or be bothered by being able to push the whole Dpad in at once a little bit. I come from the 2DSXL, which has the best possible Dpad and unfortunately, it's still the only good Dpad I've used
If you want a controller for your modern games, like Spoodermon or something, just go with a normal controller. The thumbsticks are awkward and your thumbs will be hitting each other. This controller is designed for use of Dpad

Love 8BitDo (currently have a Pro+ and 2 SN30 Pros) but it feels like they intentionally cripple their controllers with the SN30 Pro lacking analogue triggers. If they had proper triggers then they'd be the ultimate in small + versatile + fully featured controllers for travel (and also not needing any dongles/adapters too is always a bonus)
It feels crippled since they have the Xbox SN30 Pro with analogue triggers but it won't work with x-input on PC.

They look great, but I don't get why they didn't add the features of the Xbox branded SN 30 Pro (PC Software for customization, analog triggers, correct button placement and a home button in the middle).

    • @virtualspace4882
      @virtualspace4882 11 місяців тому

what do you mean the 'correct button placement'? That is the 'CORRECT' one. The SN30 pro stands for Super Nintendo. It's a recreation/homage of the SNES and FamiCom controller. And as for the reasons for the other ones you mentioned, Money of course.
Why would they put all of that when they already provide that features in their other product?
You want all the bells and whistle? Grab the 8bitDo Ultimate Controller.
You want a smaller/mobile with a bit cheaper price? Grab this one.

@@virtualspace4882 loop up the Xbox branded version, you'll understand after seeing it, almost every device that isn't made by Nintendo recognises the button inputs like it would be an Xbox controller, so printing the Nintendo layout on it is just wrong.
Depending on how you use the controller analogue triggers can be more useful than rumble, so I'd rather have those instead.
PC software support should be a thing, I mean sure the OG SN30 pro didn't have it, but since they launched the app it shouldn't be a problem for newer ones to be compatible, the Xbox branded version is too.

Very hesitant to pick up any of 8bitdo's SNES line of controllers due to a very shitty D-pad on the SN30 I got a few years back. It would keep throwing out diagonal inputs, which made games with crouching or tetris style movement, shooters, very hard to play. It was only good for games where you only move and left and right and cannot crouch.
8bitdo's M30 6 button genesis style controller is one of my main controllers for older games, but do not trust the quality of this one. No turbo feature is also very shitty, as it should be easy to include. Retrobit's 6 button genesis controller felt great too, until I played games where the diagonal inputs being thrown out constantly was a big issue. It seems companies are struggling to get this right. The M30 is one of the only retro style USB controllers that got it right for me so far.

I got one to try and use it with everything, but the idea fell flat on its face because it won't work with most sony stuff. Still a great controller for pc, but since I got two dualsenses now, I'm glad I sold my pro+ to a friend that had issues with his. Now he has a working one and extra compatible pieces.

So the big version (with the grips, like a regular controller) has 2 buttons on the back, but this one doesn't. WHY??? I prefer this controller layout, but I really want buttons on the back. Honestly, back buttons should be the norm, I don't know how people can live without them (unless they're playing games with minimal input, I guess).

Man, I just want the Super Famicom style colors back. But they're legally not allowed to sell those anymore since Nintendo bitched at them for it. I had a Super Famicom style 8Bitdo but it stopped working and broke, so now I can't replace it.

How does the comfort / feel of this controller compare to the 8BitDo Pro 2? I've noticed that using the left analog stick for side scrolling 2d games (which don't support using the dpad!) is rather uncomfortable. I'd much rather switch to the switch pro controller in that situation.

I really love SNES style controllers but I find the 8BitDo SN30 Pro extremely fatiguing when using the Analogue sticks. These are nice color options but I can't see myself or a lot of people buying too many more of these. They might be beating a dead horse here.

I bought both the atomic purple and black one in the Pro 2, too opaque and not transparent enough. Though, I do like the gold on purple/green touch.
Edit: Doesn't mean I'm not buying them, totally am. After the NES whatever I think I own most if not all 8Bitdo products in all colors save for the Zero 1, I only have the Famicom version.
    Edit 2: I miss the NESPro fn30
