Underrated? Not even in the slightest. You guys throw that word around like it's candy. It has amazing ratings and has an immense cult following and it is mentioned by hollywoods directors as the best comic book adaptation. It just came out at a time when superhero movies werent that popular yet. If it came out like 5 years ago, it had triple it's success.
I dont and I wont. Sorry if thats a hot take, but I dont watch bad movies because of an actor. A good actor makes a bad movie acceptable, a bad movie starring gerard butler is simply just a bad movie. There are other action stars that do better.
The movie has flaws but the intro alone is worthy of an Oscar. I say it time and time again. Almost no movie that has Bob Dylan or The Rolling Stones in the soundtrack is really bad. It's usually a good movie.
A huge part of what keeps the audience loving Gerard Butler is not just his charisma, it's also the fact that he's a normal dude doing his best. I believe that since he never truly made it big, he still has maintained that level of "the everyday man". Sure, not all of us will be able to land Hollywood roles like him but he still feels like someone who is like the rest of us and lives in reality.
He's a very effective actor. The scene in "Last Scene Alive" where he's in the grocery store car park get ever more panicked that his wife is gone is played pitch perfectly. He's great !
Agreed, he's somehow managed to always remain doing theatrical releases which is pretty impressive but it helps that he works with some amazing directors including John Madden, Richard Donner, Antoine Fuqua, Curtis Hanson, Joe Carnahan, Guy Ritchie, F. Gary Gray, Joel Schumacher, Jean-François Richet and Marc Forster.
Love Butler! Not many actors can be in so many bombs and still to this day have his movies released in the theatres. Most others's fate would be direct to-dvd or streaming. I guess there just is something special about our favorite british Butler! Keep making videos like this Hollywood Lore people love it you are gonna get big. Just remember to never miss anything while researching and writing your videos, people are super sensitive to stuff like that. Keep up the good work!
King Leonidas has maintained the ability very few Hollywood actors have - STAR POWER. Tom Cruise has it, Will Smith HAD it, and while Gerard Butler has never reached the top of the hollywood mountain, his ability to carry a film is unmatched and the ticket sales do not lie. The Olympus series flops with a different lead. The fans LOVE Butler.
I love Troy and Gladiator as one of my favorite sword-and-sandals movies but I can always watch 300 because of Butler alone despite the movie is more simple and/or objectively inferior than the two.
Agreed! 300 does very few things, but does them all at the highest level which results in a masterpiece. Beautiful auteur visuals, but even more impressive, are the performances from the perfect casting. Prime Lena Headey, David Wenham as the narrator, Vincent Regan, Fassbender, Dominic West and of course, Butler himself. I remember 2006 and how everyone couldn't stop saying "THIS IS- SPARTA!!!" That's all Gerard Butler's performance. You can't manufacture that.
Coriolanus 2011 - Ralph Fiennes directorial debut, Shakespeare in modern dress. Gerry plays Tullus Aufidius to Fiennes' Caius Marius Coriolanus. Gerry did the Bard proud IMHO, carried the role nicely.
What i'm hearing here is that if you've got a good actor that the audience likes, it really doesn't matter if the movie flops, noone but the critics are blaming that actor. Everyone still loves him (except critics), he's fine. Plus, some of those 'flops' were actually decent films. I absolutely loved him in Reign of Fire for instance and i own it on DVD. Noone dropped the ball on that, it just didn't light the box office on fire. Dragons just didn't really, for some ironic reason, at the time. Rock n Roller also doesn't deserve to be considered 'bad' imo. It does what it says on the tin and with that, i'm off to have a conference in the khazi.
My first memory of him on screen was a Two part movie where he played ‘Atilla the Hun’ pretty sure after that was Reign of Fire, Timeline & by then he was fast becoming the, “hey mum! There’s that guy from that movie!” Guy. By the time of 300, he was a well poured, well set, hardened concrete slab of an actor that you were just happy to see 👌
Personally, I really enjoyed Rock n Rolla. At the time, the main actors were less known by the general audience. Imagine if they do a sequel, and bring back Idris Elba, Tom Hardy and Gerard Butler 🎉 with a good script, that would be awesome 👍
Gerard Butler is a good actor - his facial expressions attest to that. the trouble is, in a world of play it safe movies he hasn't had anything really unique apart from 300. he reminds me very much of Clive Owen in that respect.
I remember seeing 300 opening weekend and only seeing a couple other people in the theater. I Loved that movie!!!! I went back the next weekend and had the room to myself and felt like a Damn King!
Okay, Gerard Butler often complains about how people pronounce his name. He's Scottish, I'm Irish, we pronounce Gerard, Bernard and Maurice the same way. It's not Ge-Rard, it's Gerred, no emphasis. It's not Ber-NaRd, it's Bernerd, no emphasis. It's not Mau-Reece, it's Morris. Ger-Rard, Ber-NaRd and Mau-Reece are on a tour of the wine country. Gerred, Bernerd and Morris are down the local pub enjoying a nice glass of stout while wearing their flat caps. We Scottish and Irish don't do fancy pronounciations. We either do commen sense, or Cthulu pronounciations. Like Niamh for Neve, or Mabb for Maeve. Thank you for attending my Ted Talk.
I like him a great deal... Regardless if he's in dramas, action and romantic comedies. He looked incredible in 300, as a ♀️ 👠 I agreely appreciate the physique. I also still appreciate the fact that he shows not the work as hard for that body afterwards.
300 is his best movie, too bad he didn’t do the second one! I don’t understand why Gerard Butler got so poorly cast? He is such a good actor especially with 300, Law Abiding Citizen, RocknRolla, Watchmen an other favorite! Loved the Train your Dragon!
Could you make a video about Aaron Eckhart? He's also experienced the career highs and lows of Karl Urban, but he's one of my favourite actors of all time. Severely underrated.
Hes like paul walker. Just coincidental they did a shit movie together lol but he just seems like such a nice guy, who doesnt run his mouth about politics, and shit, no huge ego, etc, so the audience will forever grant him a pass.
You guys should make a reasearch outside of usa and uk. Trust me. You will be surprised how many films are well recived and loved by the global fans. Ex - incredible Hulk by Edward norton. And almost most movies by butler and liam nesson.
Those first films didn’t hurt his career because he wasn’t the lead. Instead he was a good supporting character and his performances lead to more opportunities.
I mean...its obvious he loves making movies. No one can guarantee every movie is going to be a hit ,so why waste time waiting for a big offer, when you can take every offer. Those movies do not require a lot of filming, preparation, production etc...more time for him to spend with his family and actually enjoy money he's making. And lets be hones, movies he's been making are not that bad compared to some . He is a movie star, not like Tom Cruise , but a movie star nonetheless and people go to see him , doing his thing.
hindsight, Butler should have took 007 in my opinion. Fixed role for life is better than risk of no role for life. Now a days he got fixed into mostly action roles anyway.
00:58 It’s ironic because I think Butler auditioned for Wolverine for the first X men film back in the day- before Jackman and Dougray Scott! He was also up for Sabretooth in the wolverine Origins film before Liev Schreiber I think! And hey, don’t knock mediocre action films! It’s kept Butler working fine. I mean he has a net worth of 80 million. Sometimes it’s fine being a middle of the road guy when it more than pays the bills! 😂
Gerry is the best thing in his bombed movies. God's of Egypt for example, I like Nikolaj Coster-Waldau but Gerry steals the scenes he's in and I wished they gave him more to do instead of fill the movie with CGI.
Either he’ll do side characters, some drastic geezer shift if he has the chops, or direct to streaming movies like Bruce Willis (whose always with Chad Micheal Murray in them for some reason )
Wanna know why he goes by Gerry? Because noone can pronounce his name. Trust me... it's pronounced "Jerd". People in the US say Jer-Ard, but he's Scottish. And if you find the video of him saying how to pronounce it, it just adds to the confusion. He says it's "Jerrod" but that's because Scottish people roll their R's so "Jerd" becomes "Jerrod". It's also why some pronounce Edinburgh as "Edinburro". That charm that makes him seem like your mate that you go on a bender (full night of hard drinking) with is just a typical Scottish thing.
The only film I have with Gerard Butler, is Hunter Killer, there are many plotholes in it, and it would seem they had time perfecting the script, however, I assume they were too involved making pot shots at the film Crimson Tide, that derailed Hunter Killer. Still though, that feature is a must to watch. Take care, and all the best.
I always hated the overly red look of Mad Max. Thanks for letting me know where it came from. It had that digital look to it. Unlike Matrix it didn't look very natural to me. People often think that digital is just another way of dealing with the light but light filters and also manipulating a film chemically to get a tint look VERY different. Yes the old Top Gun also had an orange and teal look but looks way better. Not only is every actor SUPER ORANGE in the face like in the sequel the original also shows way more skin texture. All modern movies suffer from two cancer tumors: Orange and Teal color grading and filters. Argylle is the worst offender. The actors look like wax puppets. Even the environment looks completely animated even if they are on a real set.
All I learned from this is that I am clearly Butler's biggest fan, because I'm not the biggest movie person, but I've watched everything mentioned here, and last night my husband and I finally watched Airplane 😂. I went to Google after watching the video, and it seems all I've missed overall is God's of Egypt, which I refuse to watch coz of the whitewashing
Butler's like every guy's favourite mate who's made it big. It doesn't matter if a project's a flop, we just keep rooting for him.
He became my favorite after Olympus has Fallen now yeah, just wanna see him continue to rise.
Everyone who has seen Law Abiding Citizen knows Gerard Butler is the protagonist.
I love that Gerald Butler is fine with making action films in his later career. Hes good at it.
I know a lot of people don't share this for you but I think Watchmen is the best comic book adaptation so far. Criminally underrated.
Gerry is like Jeremy Irons. He is always the most interesting person in the movie, so even if the movie is a mess, it’s fun to watch him.
The movies are bad but held together by his Charisma. We keep watching because of him and we will continue to do so.
I dont and I wont. Sorry if thats a hot take, but I dont watch bad movies because of an actor. A good actor makes a bad movie acceptable, a bad movie starring gerard butler is simply just a bad movie. There are other action stars that do better.

Damn good movie

3:34 I actually really like Timeline
I like his arc there. Would totally go back in time to hook up with an older human. lol
Somehow my brain had blocked out the fact that Gerard Butler was in the Phantom of the Opera.
I remember when he played as Beowulf in a really B grade movie. He was good.
Butler is just solid, hard working and does his best in whatever he's in and he's consistent at the box office.
Rock ‘N’ Rolla has to be Butler’s best film to date. 😊
It's him. He is a charismatic good actor. Plus he always appears humble and is classically good looking.

Reign of Fire was a good watch, though. I really liked it.
300 is a unicorn of a movie. If they released nowadays, it have flopped.
Watchmen movie is low key one of my favoriter superhero movie. After nolan movies and endgame
You know what? People like butler and liam nesson makes simple entertaining movies. Movies that you can watch when you are bored or having a dull day.
Dracula 2000 is Epic and I never knew that was Butler omg
