Congratulations for the Oscar however after watching this documentary I have dubious feelings. Mostly young people should know that A. Honnold is not an average person and his lack of feeling fear has its root in dysfunction of his amygdala. Therefore A Honnold is able to perform solo climbing at the normal level of stress which 98% of climbers in the world would find impossible. Let's be honest - A. Honnold needs this emotions to feel that he's alive. There's a part in the movie when he says "below me endless ocean of hater towards myself" - it means he's the same problem like other people with personality disorders - frequent depressions, hater towards itself. All in all what's missing: a warning notice - DO NOT DO IT, THINK 2ce BEFORE YOU START TO CLIMB SOLO. Not everyone has the same predispositions like the main character of this documentary.

There are many adrenaline junkies...adrenaline addicts, in this world and then there are the rest of us who do not even understand why anyone would want to do this. Some parts of the U.S., do charge people more money I think to rescue them when they choose to do incredibly risky things for their enjoyment but end up needing Search & Rescue.
You know what's crazy? Everybody watching this knows that he makes it. He's fine. It's a success. The worry is over. Yet it's still impossible to watch and not be terrified.

I have no idea why I get so emotional watching this documentary, especially his climb. It brings tears to my eyes and a great sense of awe whenever I watch it. In my humble opinion, I believe this is one of the best documentaries in existence.
Indeed, but spoiled by horrific skies. You can not love that beauty and not be aware of the chemtrails. Time is almost up. Don't watch FREE SOLO being a spectator without watching and embracing THE DIMMING.
Just saw this tonight in a packed theatre in Toronto and it blew my mind. Seriously one of the most exciting documentaries I've ever witnessed. Utterly thrilling and the story is brilliantly well told. The filmmakers and Alex did an incredible job. Just blown away. Really glad I saw it on a big screen as the scenery is utterly gorgeous. The entire theatre was so on edge and you could hear everyone holding their breath during the best bits. So good!!

Nadim Melkonian discovered most the routes up this rock......climbed it solo and free all the time.His ashes were even spread there.Look him up,he has records for EL Capitan.
this is potentially the limit of human existence. this is the strongest, bravest, most daring thing i think a human could ever accomplish, and that limit is both comforting and terrifying.

I saw this last night. Thought it was fantastic. It was super interesting to see a portrait of Alex Honnold and his psyche, and the climbing scenes were so frightening and severe they were emotional and difficult to watch even knowing he made it. Wow. Congratulations to Alex and everyone involved with the film. And Alex, please don't try to top this. You've done it. You're the best. This really IS good enough.
I don't climb but this was one of the absolute best documentaries I've seen in years. Heart stopping and shows the limit of the human mind and body. Incredible!
I saw this twice in the theaters and only after my second time could I put words to the feelings I had from watching it. The first time I was shaking, tears streaming down my face during the entire climb. After getting back to my car I sat in silence with my brother for a good 10 minutes. There are no superlatives that describe what we just witnessed. It goes so far beyond words..... The second time I saw it, watching the climb it came to me why I couldn't find words to put to what I felt. There are none. What you witness (bear with me here, it's about to go existential, so if that's not your thing keep scrolling, lol) is a glimpse at Alex's soul. It's not him your watching climb, but everything he is. It's an act of such purity, beauty, and joy that it transcends the physical and mental. It's ineffable and one of the most moving things I've ever experienced. Some of you might dismiss me as a weirdo, or whatever, lol, and that's fine. To those of you who felt what I did, and do, you'll understand completely.
Some game developer should totally make a VR free solo game with all climbs like El Cap laser scanned. Let us mere mortals get a taste of what Alex experiences!
I was a Ranger, I climbed Nanga Parbat. I have been in a firefight that lasted almost three days. What Alex did is absolutely unparalleled. You couldn’t pay me a billion dollars and give me 10 years prep to even try.
I watched today and I am GLAD. His efforts, his physical and mental focus just blow my mind. I learn from this documentary don't give up do your performance with 100% of focus. I just love this documentary.
I saw this doc yesterday. A monumental, unparalleled achievement unlike anything you will ever see. It's nearly beyond comprehension. With his uncanny climbing abilities, Honnold almost becomes a part of El Capitan during his ascent. This film demands to be seen on as big a screen as possible. You will not be disappointed.
Christopher Profit in the Alpes in 1982, over 3800 meters. Some others did achieve stuff like that before. But impressive indeed. THE DIMMING : do not forget that. The skies are spoiled and horrific.

Can't wait for this. This is indeed probably the greatest athletic achievement in history. If you tried to win Wimbledon starting today you would have a better chance than successfully completing this climb. It is astonishing and beautiful.
It's completely different types of climbing. Ondra fell tons of times when trying to do Silence but he only had to get it right once. With free soloing you can prepare all you want but you only have one shot without the ropes and you have to do it perfect.
Just had the privilege of watching this last night, and I think it is probably the best movie, documentary or otherwise, that I have ever seen. I left the theater completely floored and speechless.
nah, not really. running a 4 minute mile is much more impressive. this climb is "only" 5.12d which is way way below the limit that people regularly onsight these days. well this is no onsight, it was rehearsed many times. all this is is someone risking their life on camera for some kind of payday and fame. really it is just irresponsibility. if he did it without the fanfare and the camera it would be marginally more impressive, but hardly as a sporting accomplishment per se....more as just a curiousity.
Reinhold Messner’s solo of Everest is pretty on par with this I think..for reals though! it took 3 days to go up and 2 going down in August winter and not one other soul on the mountain.. no support other than his own mental and physical badassery hardcoreness ⛰ maybe a few wandering spirits but such amazing feats in this amazing world now just need the new Tool album and I’m good forever

You want your kids to follow in his footsteps? i mean, of course i believe in freedom and such but i have a feeling that if one of your kids tells you over breakfast tomorrow that he is going to freesolo something like this you are going to change your tune in a hurry...maybe i'm wrong but it would take quite a person to say "ok, son, very cool. have fun. i'm glad you are doing what you love and i will sing a merry tune whilst digging your grave after scraping your remains off the rocks with a putty knife while fighting off the buzzards." there is nothing remotely "safe" about what he is doing, particularly the slab sections. you ever climb a 5.11 slab before?
Shrike12 it’s an obvious danger, no climber takes gravity for granted ... that said, free solo can be intensely rewarding ... I’ve done it tho not up to the standards of AH. It was a tremendous feeling of accomplishment, a very personal one, and reminds me of a time in my life when I managed to master just a little bit of the dance.
aeropilot what i meant to say was "friction slabs"...not steep thin edging...people boulder (basically solo) steep thin edging out at the Buttermilks up to at least V12, sometimes 50 feet high...but you still are holding onto something..edges, even 3 or 4mm ones, are still positive, as you know. part of Freerider is pure friction (so I understand) and most long granite routes anywhere will have moves trusting only friction of rubber on rock, that can be highly temperature and humidity dependent as well as requiring incredible precision...i've been on routes like that where a gust of wind caused me to come off...that is where I believe you are truly rolling the dice..not on positive holds or solid jams or even chimneys....of course for someone like Honnold mid-5.12-level cracks and even 5.10+ OWs and chimneys are like a strolls in the park (as long as it doesn't start raining, sleeting, hailing, or snowing, or you don't disturb a nesting bird maybe) i fully agree that freesoloing is very rewarding, but i also think it should be done quietly....setting "role models for children" is highly questionable...kinda like those rappers with their guns, misogyny, bad language, stupid attitudes aren't very good role models.......... bottom line: what i'm essentially saying is that i believe in freedom of all kinds but publicizing and glamorizing this behavior for money and fame is wrong...on many levels. and it will lead to more high-profile deaths which ultimately are bad for climbers like us that just want to do our thing~ i get mad when climbers litter too, and cut down trees, and leave bright pink rap slings, etc. don't you?????
I watched this last night. It's way more then about climbing. I feel kind of bad for Alex. He seems very emotionally detached from people . Being told he could always do more and losing his father very young. I think he has a very good heart and just wants to climb and be left alone. He looks at death with a callous thought. I hope you find peace Alex, keep doing what makes you happy. In the film he also said he never knew how to hug and love. Climb on brother and stay safe !!!
This achievement makes Honnold one of the greatest athletes of all time.The physical skills required are exceptional, but it is the mental calm and focus required to climb a 3000 ft vertical wall with no ropes that make it so unique and exceptional.I dont think this will ever be repeated.

I've been waiting for this film for ages and I really thought I had it, but my legs were shaking watching it this past weekend. I don't think I've ever felt more fully present or engaged watching a film. It's magnificent. Now please be done Alex. It's enough.

It really is amazing how he prepped and practiced what he was about to do. From each climb to everything he was going to do, to the wind conditions, to the how he climbed it.
This was one of the best movies I have ever seen. Was so hyped and it didn't disappoint at all. Alex is one of the most inspirational humans I have ever seen in my existence and this achievement was literally incredible.
I'd need to train that long just to watch footage of Alex without my palms sweating. The guy achieved something so utterly terrifying that it should be beyond human achievement, but he did it anyway. Absolutely blown away, scared, excited, glad for him and I hope he never does anything like it ever again. I want this guy to live till a ripe old age so he can look back and think, yep, I did that. He deserves that moment, that pride, that sense of accomplishment that makes a long-life fulfilled.

Saw this movie yesterday. I'm not a rock climber, but in recent years I've been intrigued by the men and women who do this. I don't think I would/could ever do this, but I'm so glad there are people like Alex Honnald out there pushing the boundaries of human potential. I'm also glad there are wonderful filmmakers like Jimmy Chin and E. Chai Vasarhelyi to capture it. I genuinely believe it's a cinematic masterpiece. Even if you don't know a thing about rock climbing, you will be riveted by this film. I knew the outcome and was still entranced. Thanks all for your involvement in this project.
Just watched "Free Solo" on DVD. This stunning Academy Award winning documentary about Alex Honnold's free solo climb 3000 feet up El Capitan is absolutely amazing, gripping and awe-inspiring. His unflinching determination, grit and courage to overcome all fear is amazing and inspirational! No fear.

I saw this movie today at the arc light in Hollywood and was lucky enough to meet Alex and shake his hand after the Q&A after the movie. Amazing film, even though I knew he was going to make it I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. More suspenseful than any "suspense thriller" movie.
There are still many free solo climbers alive and well that climbed when I did, when it was still a ghost sport. Extremely thrilled by the amazing new talent and success that this generation is pursuing - I'm just dumb-struck, oh heck, I wish I could still climb - its never left me. I was married to climbing - best times of my life! Yes, climbing IS life!

I've seen countless interviews of him talking post-climb. I've seen him climb El Cap and make it to the top, yet, every time I watch, I'm sitting there holding my breath... This is the greatest mental/physical achievement of mankind.
got around to watching this a couple days ago on hulu plus. it is one of the most amazing things i have ever seen. my palms were sweating the entire film. This guy is insane.
1:38 Now THAT's how to highlight how rope free Honnold is on that wall. Show a cameraman on the same wall, beside him, fully roped up. Great shot. I'm working at getting the courage up to go see this film and stay right through to the end. I'm not keen on hearing all the audience snickers if I have to get up and leave in the middle.
saw FS 3x. I went in cold the first time, and did not know whether AH survived or fell. My central nervous system just about went critical on me. No movie compares.
I saw the movie yesterday. It was beautiful and awe inspiring. It was also terrifying to watch even though I knew the ending. I don’t know how the camera men, hanging from the mountain at the most treacherous spots of the climb, were able to hold their cameras steady not knowing how it would end. It is a fantastic movie, and you will be glad that you saw it.

I tried free solo as well. I slipped off. Fortunately, I was only 4 feet up the wall. Went back to climbing with safety ropes.

I saw this last night. Thought it was fantastic. It was super interesting to see a portrait of Alex Honnold and his psyche, and the climbing scenes were so frightening and severe they were emotional and difficult to watch even knowing he made it. Wow. Congratulations to Alex and everyone involved with the film. And Alex, please don't try to top this. You've done it. You're the best. This really IS good enough.

I don't climb but this was one of the absolute best documentaries I've seen in years. Heart stopping and shows the limit of the human mind and body. Incredible!
I saw this twice in the theaters and only after my second time could I put words to the feelings I had from watching it. The first time I was shaking, tears streaming down my face during the entire climb. After getting back to my car I sat in silence with my brother for a good 10 minutes. There are no superlatives that describe what we just witnessed. It goes so far beyond words.....
The second time I saw it, watching the climb it came to me why I couldn't find words to put to what I felt. There are none. What you witness (bear with me here, it's about to go existential, so if that's not your thing keep scrolling, lol) is a glimpse at Alex's soul. It's not him your watching climb, but everything he is. It's an act of such purity, beauty, and joy that it transcends the physical and mental. It's ineffable and one of the most moving things I've ever experienced. Some of you might dismiss me as a weirdo, or whatever, lol, and that's fine. To those of you who felt what I did, and do, you'll understand completely.
Some game developer should totally make a VR free solo game with all climbs like El Cap laser scanned. Let us mere mortals get a taste of what Alex experiences!

I was a Ranger, I climbed Nanga Parbat. I have been in a firefight that lasted almost three days. What Alex did is absolutely unparalleled. You couldn’t pay me a billion dollars and give me 10 years prep to even try.

I watched today and I am GLAD. His efforts, his physical and mental focus just blow my mind. I learn from this documentary don't give up do your performance with 100% of focus. I just love this documentary.

I saw this doc yesterday. A monumental, unparalleled achievement unlike anything you will ever see. It's nearly beyond comprehension. With his uncanny climbing abilities, Honnold almost becomes a part of El Capitan during his ascent. This film demands to be seen on as big a screen as possible. You will not be disappointed.
Christopher Profit in the Alpes in 1982, over 3800 meters. Some others did achieve stuff like that before. But impressive indeed. THE DIMMING : do not forget that. The skies are spoiled and horrific.

Can't wait for this. This is indeed probably the greatest athletic achievement in history. If you tried to win Wimbledon starting today you would have a better chance than successfully completing this climb. It is astonishing and beautiful.
It's completely different types of climbing. Ondra fell tons of times when trying to do Silence but he only had to get it right once. With free soloing you can prepare all you want but you only have one shot without the ropes and you have to do it perfect.
Adam Ondra actually said what Alex did was much harder than anything he has ever done.
Ok maybe, but it's not physically harder, just mentally harder.
If you think about it, the line between physical and mental exertion is pretty blurred.
You can't compare what Alex does and what Adam does, they are completely different but both absolutely insane

Just had the privilege of watching this last night, and I think it is probably the best movie, documentary or otherwise, that I have ever seen. I left the theater completely floored and speechless.

nah, not really. running a 4 minute mile is much more impressive. this climb is "only" 5.12d which is way way below the limit that people regularly onsight these days. well this is no onsight, it was rehearsed many times. all this is is someone risking their life on camera for some kind of payday and fame. really it is just irresponsibility. if he did it without the fanfare and the camera it would be marginally more impressive, but hardly as a sporting accomplishment per se....more as just a curiousity.
What people are impressed by is how he could mentally achieve the climb, more so than the pure physicality. But of course you know this already.
Reinhold Messner’s solo of Everest is pretty on par with this I think..for reals though! it took 3 days to go up and 2 going down in August winter and not one other soul on the mountain.. no support other than his own mental and physical badassery hardcoreness ⛰ maybe a few wandering spirits but such amazing feats in this amazing world now just need the new Tool album and I’m good forever

You want your kids to follow in his footsteps? i mean, of course i believe in freedom and such but i have a feeling that if one of your kids tells you over breakfast tomorrow that he is going to freesolo something like this you are going to change your tune in a hurry...maybe i'm wrong but it would take quite a person to say "ok, son, very cool. have fun. i'm glad you are doing what you love and i will sing a merry tune whilst digging your grave after scraping your remains off the rocks with a putty knife while fighting off the buzzards." there is nothing remotely "safe" about what he is doing, particularly the slab sections. you ever climb a 5.11 slab before?
Shrike12 it’s an obvious danger, no climber takes gravity for granted ... that said, free solo can be intensely rewarding ... I’ve done it tho not up to the standards of AH. It was a tremendous feeling of accomplishment, a very personal one, and reminds me of a time in my life when I managed to master just a little bit of the dance.
B. Alvn I’ve soloed 10d slabs and, yes, it focuses the mind. I think the “be safe” comment was more in the context of “know your limits.”
aeropilot what i meant to say was "friction slabs"...not steep thin edging...people boulder (basically solo) steep thin edging out at the Buttermilks up to at least V12, sometimes 50 feet high...but you still are holding onto something..edges, even 3 or 4mm ones, are still positive, as you know.
part of Freerider is pure friction (so I understand) and most long granite routes anywhere will have moves trusting only friction of rubber on rock, that can be highly temperature and humidity dependent as well as requiring incredible precision...i've been on routes like that where a gust of wind caused me to come off...that is where I believe you are truly rolling the dice..not on positive holds or solid jams or even chimneys....of course for someone like Honnold mid-5.12-level cracks and even 5.10+ OWs and chimneys are like a strolls in the park (as long as it doesn't start raining, sleeting, hailing, or snowing, or you don't disturb a nesting bird maybe)
i fully agree that freesoloing is very rewarding, but i also think it should be done quietly....setting "role models for children" is highly questionable...kinda like those rappers with their guns, misogyny, bad language, stupid attitudes aren't very good role models..........
bottom line: what i'm essentially saying is that i believe in freedom of all kinds but publicizing and glamorizing this behavior for money and fame is wrong...on many levels. and it will lead to more high-profile deaths which ultimately are bad for climbers like us that just want to do our thing~ i get mad when climbers litter too, and cut down trees, and leave bright pink rap slings, etc. don't you?????
I watched this last night. It's way more then about climbing. I feel kind of bad for Alex. He seems very emotionally detached from people . Being told he could always do more and losing his father very young. I think he has a very good heart and just wants to climb and be left alone. He looks at death with a callous thought. I hope you find peace Alex, keep doing what makes you happy. In the film he also said he never knew how to hug and love. Climb on brother and stay safe !!!

This achievement makes Honnold one of the greatest athletes of all time.The physical skills required are exceptional, but it is the mental calm and focus required to climb a 3000 ft vertical wall with no ropes that make it so unique and exceptional.I dont think this will ever be repeated.

I've been waiting for this film for ages and I really thought I had it, but my legs were shaking watching it this past weekend. I don't think I've ever felt more fully present or engaged watching a film. It's magnificent. Now please be done Alex. It's enough.

It really is amazing how he prepped and practiced what he was about to do. From each climb to everything he was going to do, to the wind conditions, to the how he climbed it.

This was one of the best movies I have ever seen. Was so hyped and it didn't disappoint at all. Alex is one of the most inspirational humans I have ever seen in my existence and this achievement was literally incredible.

I'd need to train that long just to watch footage of Alex without my palms sweating. The guy achieved something so utterly terrifying that it should be beyond human achievement, but he did it anyway. Absolutely blown away, scared, excited, glad for him and I hope he never does anything like it ever again.
I want this guy to live till a ripe old age so he can look back and think, yep, I did that. He deserves that moment, that pride, that sense of accomplishment that makes a long-life fulfilled.

This is absolutely incredible. I am amazed by what Alex accomplished and also his good heart. He will inspire so many, I was laughing, crying and could not believe what I am watching. I think this is one of the best documentaries ever made and also the greatest achievement in history of sports. Thank you. It was mindblowing.

Saw this movie yesterday. I'm not a rock climber, but in recent years I've been intrigued by the men and women who do this. I don't think I would/could ever do this, but I'm so glad there are people like Alex Honnald out there pushing the boundaries of human potential. I'm also glad there are wonderful filmmakers like Jimmy Chin and E. Chai Vasarhelyi to capture it. I genuinely believe it's a cinematic masterpiece. Even if you don't know a thing about rock climbing, you will be riveted by this film. I knew the outcome and was still entranced. Thanks all for your involvement in this project.

Just watched "Free Solo" on DVD. This stunning Academy Award winning documentary about Alex Honnold's free solo climb 3000 feet up El Capitan is absolutely amazing, gripping and awe-inspiring. His unflinching determination, grit and courage to overcome all fear is amazing and inspirational! No fear.
Just saw this and it’s amazing, so gripping, and also anxiety inducing, some of the shots from above him just show the sheer scale and the music is so well done, one of the best docs I’ve seen a long time

I saw this movie today at the arc light in Hollywood and was lucky enough to meet Alex and shake his hand after the Q&A after the movie. Amazing film, even though I knew he was going to make it I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. More suspenseful than any "suspense thriller" movie.
There are still many free solo climbers alive and well that climbed when I did, when it was still a ghost sport.
Extremely thrilled by the amazing new talent and success that this generation is pursuing - I'm just dumb-struck, oh heck, I wish I could still climb - its never left me. I was married to climbing - best times of my life! Yes, climbing IS life!

I've seen countless interviews of him talking post-climb. I've seen him climb El Cap and make it to the top, yet, every time I watch, I'm sitting there holding my breath... This is the greatest mental/physical achievement of mankind.

Watching this got me into indoor climbing
I saw the movie yesterday. It was beautiful and awe inspiring. It was also terrifying to watch even though I knew the ending. I don’t know how the camera men, hanging from the mountain at the most treacherous spots of the climb, were able to hold their cameras steady not knowing how it would end. It is a fantastic movie, and you will be glad that you saw it.
I once had the privilege of shaking Alex's hand. He kept my hand.
