Hilarious how Alex makes it seem like almost anyone could this with the right mind and training. I don’t think the audience fully comprehends the absolute insanity of what he did.
Have to admit watching the documentary and Alex's attitude sort of lulled me into this mindset. I was thinking this seems possible. He seems to know what he's doing. He's so chill about it, it can't be as bad as it looks. When in fact it's as close to impossible as you can get and he did it all with the huge weight of his immediate death hanging over him for 4 hours. The is not a normal man or a normal achievement. This is beyond comprehension for most people. I literally can't fathom the sort of mindset one would need to accomplish something like this.
anyone can do it. And by anyone someone whos rock climbed practically there entire life and then sets a goal to do it and prepares for a few years. Its just the fact of that group of people is so small most dont have the drive or want to do it.
@Heidi actually it is mindset. You can’t overcome something scary without focus and discipline and that requires a good mindset. Alex devoted himself to practice and repetition. He practiced so much that he was able to overcome the fear and nervousness. It’s like driving a car. Give someone who has driven a car over a hundred times and I guarantee the part of their brain that shows fear will not light up. Then do a brain scan of someone who has never driven a car and put them in a car. You’ll see that part of that brain light up. Alex talked a lot about overcoming fear in his TedX talk.
what struck me the most in this interview is Alex never watch at the audience or the camera, unlike most of the guests. He s not here to put a show, or look smart, or funny, he s not waiting for the audience to laugh at scripted joke like they all do in those ego shows. Just straight, natural answers and behaviour, while what he does is 1000 times bigger than any actor or celebrity will ever do.
What a rad comment. I feel like Alex gets it, I mean truly gets it. It’s his life and he’s living it the best he can in the way he wants to. He doesn’t do it for North Face, he doesn’t do it for attention and he doesn’t even do it to check off the box. The man does it because he believes in himself to do it, and he knows he can die every time. He’s amazing and Free Solo has been one of the coolest movies I have ever seen. Please see it if you haven’t. The world could use more of Alex because he’s a straight shot.
His responses to Jimmy's ridiculous questions are great. "No, that seems overly dramatic" and "Not many mountain lions climb quite that well" especially.
Yea Alex has some pretty good/clever "deadpan", or "dry" humor. I hope you realize that Jimmy's questions are DELIBERATELY ridiculous though... Jimmy is far smarter than some may think, and there's a very mathematical intent behind each of the questions he asks his guests.

jack moore "climber" really? don't tell me thats autocorrect. Americans have placed on pedestal feats more inconsequential than this and labeled those who've done it heroes. If you're trying to downplay this mans achievement just to underly the person you've replied to, because of his statement of admiration towards Alex, you seriously have a problem. Now, it maybe a simple case of jealousy, envy, perhaps insecurity, nonetheless you sound pretty pathetic with your attempt.
Aldos Medina Jr. Mr. Medina, thank you so much for this great insight; very solid psychoanalysis; do you offer therapy sessions, I may be interested in your services. ps. Thanks for the grammar correction; I have learned so much from you, you’re amazing :)
Jack Moore - seems you don't understand the difficulty and sheer insanity of Alex's accomplishment. For example, the first man to climb Everest is revered and remembered, even "respected." It's Sir Edmund Hillary, by the way. Without question, climbing El Cap without ropes is FAR more difficult. Hillary is "respected" for his "achievement" and rightly so. Hundreds have climbed Everest since Hillary completed the feat. I doubt anyone in our lifetimes will duplicate Alex's feat. Think about that. Alex's "achievement" is so rare that he is the ONLY one to have done it, and is probably will still be the only one 50 years from now. Perhaps someone hundreds of years ago did it alone and without fanfare, but that is highly unlikely. Respect? Yes, that is the right word, because as humans we should respect an activity that is singular, almost superhuman, and one that requires endless preparation -- a lifetime of preparation. Do you respect the first man on the moon? The first to climb Everest? The first person to surf a massive wave? The first to explain a difficult mathematical concept? If you fail to recognize Alex's "achievement" it says a lot about you, and everything it says about you is not favorable. Call it psychoanalysis if you want, but that does not make it less true.
Elmo Blatch the moon landing and mathematical concepts have societal and scientific benefits. What exactly does climbing a big rock do for society at large ? Sure it’s an achievement and should be praised for what it is. Respected or treated with respect ? Seems a little over the top
Saw the documentary, loved it. He is one of the most disciplined athletes I've ever witnessed. To paraphrase a friend and trainer in the film, free soloing, is like an Olympic event where, you either win the gold medal or you fall to your death. After conquering El Capitan, he's now the world's best free soloist ever. Here's hoping he has the wisdom to quit before he dies at the bottom of a cliff someday, like free solo climbers all too often do.
First of all, Alex Honnold has quite simply set a new high bar for badass! I just loved how he kept shutting down the insipid jokes from the host, cutting off the laughter.
A message to the un-initiated who may stumble upon this video: Free soloing El Cap is perhaps the single most incredible feat of skill, strength, mental toughness and endurance ever accomplished by a human being... in the history of human beings. If you want to get a very, very tiny sense of the fear, just climb without ropes or harness 20 feet up an 'easy' climb -- say a climbing wall at the gym -- stop and look down. If that's not hard enough, try 20 ft up a crack on a granite wall, say the outside of a building ... then, climb back down before you hurt yourself. Now, multiply that by *150 TIMES*... 3,000 vertical feet, no stopping, no turning around, no giving up, and never, ever letting go. This man is a living God!
"Living God" to you maybe, "monumentally stupid" to the rest of us. I can't imagine any risk/benefit analysis that would conclude it was a good idea. Four hours where any tiny lack of concentration means your death, with the benefit of getting to say you got to the top? Stupid, stupid, stupid.
So few things: 1. Closing line is moronic. (To someone who faces death every climb/Lost close friends the same way) 2. Heart Attack Joke: His dad died of a heart attack. Did Jimmy even watch the documentary? 3. Shouldn’t treat Alex like you do all your dumb celebrity guests - the man made history. Your viewers wanted a real interview.
One thing to note is that the interview was done well before the documentary came out. I think it was done in 2017, when the movie only came out in the fall of 2018 or later.
I watched Free Solo and I didn't think Alex was above doing dumb jokes and making fun of himself, don't know why this comment section thinks he needs to be treated like a god
seepsrunbee Not like a god. But jimmy did kind of make a mockery of him and Alex handled it very well. He referred to memorizing hundreds of different moves as turning left in nascar. He also asked if alex ever saw mountain lions and Alex had a subtle but witty reply. It takes a certain kind of human to keep composure while scaling a 3,000 foot wall and have an interview this stupid for his profession.
Actually, the closing line was a pretty solid joke. Honnold said that essentially there was nothing else for him to do so no reason for him to be back on any of these shows, hence "you will be missed" lol. Stop looking for ways to be offended. His viewers didn't want a "real" interview, they wanted the same interview they always get. You are just here because you watched the documentary and looked for interviews, not a Kimmel viewer by any stretch of the imagination. You probably didn't even watched this interview before the documentary was out proving how much you actually care for this "history maker". _Poser._
I believe jimmy just meant this man has made history; all of us will die it is just this guy did something epic, so he will have a greater amount of people who miss him.
@@leemcmullan pointless to you, not for me. For me his name will go down in history next to the ones who created medical equipments to save lives, found cures for diseases, physicists who created technology, biologists and chemists, scientists of all spheres, gurus, spiritual leaders, astronauts, artists, etc. When I speak of someone who created cure for cancer I will make sure Alex's name is next to his. But then again, who cares about my opinion. Thanks
Alex: I spent a whole year preparing myself for this climb. Memorizing each movement I make. Jimmy: WhY DoNt YoU JuST Use A ROPe???? DiD YoU MEet anY MoUntain LionS??? AHURHURHURHUR!
This one was for sure you could hear right away that he was 0 % prepared(1min preparation is too much to ask when you get couple of millions in pay for your show?) and also that he wasn't interested at all. I saw at least one good interview.
@Cyrus Slapatich well trump is bashable. He's a comedian's dream. Dubya gave some great material as well like Clinton before him. The presidents who never gave us good comedy were the likes of Carter, Obama and most of the guys pre Eisenhower. Honorable mentions go to Nixon and Kennedy.
Elmo Blatch for me it’s the second greatest. Ueli Steck’s south Annapurna climb is the number one! I recommend you read about it sometime! Cheers brother and Alex Is amazing!!
@toon army Incorrect. It is far more physically demanding to climb without the ropes, mostly because you can't rest using the ropes. In free climbing (with ropes) as opposed to "free solo" climbing, you can always take a breather regardless of the terrain thanks to the ropes.
Why? Sure, this was hard, but so is running 100 meters in under 10 seconds. So is doing a quadruple jump on ice skates. So is any world record accomplishment. What makes this better than those?
Regardless of the poor interviewing, Alex is still fascinating to listen too and he has a great and sometimes dry sense of humor as well. Just love this guy! Hope he’s around for a long time to come..
Nice to see a guest on late night TV who seems genuinely humble, amazingly accomplished, and, even more cool and rare for me...a centered physical person with good posture.
I know next to nothing about climbing but watching free solo was awe inspiring. Seriously that was one of if not the greatest athletic performance ever. The amount of preparation, mental and physical fortitude, and just all around difficulty is almost unfathomable.
This was painful to watch. I have always enjoyed Jimmy Kimmel but this interview was abysmal. He is being a condescending idiot with a very unique guest. He should re-invite him and make up for it.
Alex Honnold is one of the most nicest, down to earth, not a show off, super athlete. He knows what he is doing and he works really hard to make it happen. Last Jimmy´s comment is so rude and a bad choice for a comedian. Would he talk about concussions to NFL players and making that last comment? To car racers? To bull fighters?
AGH331 but that is my point. For sure I think Alex knows the risk, I have seen him talking about it quite a lot. But Jimmy's joke is really poor, even if it's not out on line....I still find it rude.
I would assume that Kimmel's comment is based on the fact that Honnold has achieved his lifelong dream and that there isn't any future projects. As in, you will be missed because you can't top that with anything. I think it was pretty obvious
I’m glad everyone thought this interview was trash too. Kimmel sounded so condescending I felt bad for Alex because he was trying to explain things to a person clearly more interested in himself and appearing funny. I definitely liked his other interviews and Ted talk better and he explained the same things unrestricted
"You will be missed." What the hell?! Seriously. What a terrible "joke" to say. Huge respect to Alex. It's insane the amount of preparation that is behind this kind of climbs.
Alex has probably heard it all before, and Jimmy probably knew it. Lots of people laugh at things that are inappropriate in the _wrong_ context; it seemed harmless.
Jimmy Kimmel annoyed the hell out of me while interviewing Alex...He clearly knew nothing about climbing, and clearly didn't bother to know anything about it prior to the show.
I agree. For me, though, it's on a similar level to the guy who high-wired the twin towers, twice. Both of these events are do-or-die. Those are the only options. Very few adventurers can truly understand what that means and proceed with literally a death-defying feat.
His uneducated questions prevent Alex taking about what he loves with passion, alex is a pleasure to listen to no questions are needed just let him talk
I don't think you understand that this probably the toughest type of interview for a talk show host, being with someone that is not used to being in the spotlight on television in this way. Clearly Alex was nervous at the start and jimmy had to do what Comedy hosts do and loosen things up a bit with some humor. Eventually Alex got comfortable and opened up more. Also it's Jimmy's job to ask those "tedious questions", in which by the way he already knows the answer, he's just playing the ignorant "every man".
Instead of commenting on the cringe of this interview. I recommend turning it off immediately and searching up Alex's TedTalk about the climb. It's far more superior and much more engaging and mentally stimulating.
I just watched it, Alex is an amazing dude. Its cringy to see him having to sit through interviews with morons that haven't spent 1% of the time Alex has training to accomplish such an amazing goal.
You could also just say it's way better... I mean it's a TEDtalk vs a fuckin late night talk show interview, obviously the former is going to be much better in almost every conceivable way
This entire interview felt so condescending. Imagine him having Usain Bolt on the show and just being like "you know you could just walk right? like we have cars, theres actually no point in being so fast"
I like the comparison but I think it’s a little off. I wouldn’t call Alex the best climber, but he’s certainly the best in his niche - and that by a long shot.
I can sense Jimmy is kind of jealous of what Alex got through daring, preparation and faith.... exhilaration, glory, popularity, peace, joy, and fulfillment. There is not much fulfilment to be had in Hollywood, only temporal pleasure.
There is only a handful of people in the world who could climb that wall WITH safety gear and ropes , and he does it WITHOUT the ropes is absolutely mind-blowing ... RESPECT ....🙏🙏🙏
This dude is a pure awesome, composed, chill climbing legend.. This is beyond professionalism this guy loves climbing so much it's the soul of who he is.. If people cannot get a positive vibe or feeling from this fella that truly appreciates and is devotely passionate about his climbing then you are looking at this wrong... You don't need to be a climber to understand drive in a person and a love for what they do to get an energy or sense from them...
Jeff Dinkin It was truly beyond horrible. It made me feel sick to my stomach. That on top of the whole terrible interview during which time Jimmy Kimmel tried to make jokes at the expense of one of the most incredible athletes to have ever lived.
Guys guys relax. I had the same reaction at first but as others have explained, he meant "you will be missed" like when an athlete is hanging it up/done/retiring...because the comment came right after Alex said El Capitan was the pinnacle for him and didn't have anything else planned. As terrible as the interview was, I feel slightly better having watched that part again and realizing Jimmy wasn't referring to death, but the fact Alex might be done with any serious climbing.
Wow, what an awful interviewer :( At that level, you'd expect he could interview someone like this. He tried some really awful wisecracks. It was like a child interviewing their teacher.
Saw this movie last night at TIFF and it was incredibly compelling. My hands were sweating as I watched the final scenes. Jimmy Chin and his crew do such a good job of taking the viewer along for a great ride. This camera crew took painstaking measures to get the close shots, where you can hear the breathing, feet rubbing on granite and see the climber's finger tips prodding the tiny crevices. It was so intense, one camera man couldn't even watch as his camera shot from the safety of the ground. Actually want to see it again...
So stoked for Free Solo winning the Oscar. In my opinion Honnold is THE most impressive person of his generation. He's got something very few of the "look at me" celebs his age have. Humility and respect.
Damn that last question was down-right insulting, Jimmy clearly isn't a climber but it just seems like he didn't prepare for this interview in the slightest. Just a string of stupid, borderline rude questions
I understand Jimmy is a comedian, but this interview was pretty lacking. Yeah as comments have said Jimmy plays fun of Alex's life but it's the respect I feel is lacking the most. Alex's climb of El Cap is one of the greatest human achievements ever! Not simply in the sport category but overall, it's right up there with the moon landing! Can't wait to see what Jimmy Chin shot, he's amazing as well. I do hope Alex turns more to harder sport climbs and backs off the epic freesolo. I believe he will likely free forever, and as a climber myself I understand his art. But keep it under 5..10 Alex, we want you around for a good long time! Much Respect to Alex👍🏽
Alex is in my opinion one of the best rock climbers of all times, if not the best. But, I disagree that climbing el Cap is "one of the greatest human achievements ever" comparable to landing on the moon. That is an exaggeration. Furthermore, all his climbing life has been full of achievements (for example Fitz Roy traverse with Tommy or solo climbing Half Dome) and climbing solo el Cap does not make me think that he is suddently a much better climber than before doing it. He was great before and after doing it. To end, for me the most amazing thing of Alex is not what he does, but how he does it. His attitude and philosophy are for me much more valuable than his great technical skills as rock climber. Simply because, many people may not be able to climb so high, but they can learn from his way of seeing life, trying to live doing what he likes, instead of doing whatever the audience wants them to do to earn money quickly as many young people do nowadays (like jackass). Alex is a reference.
Nicholas Rees haha. i really hope you're joking. moon landing? rly? how come the world wasn't watching when he climbed it? why weren't school children shown it during class? why wasn't the president talking about it. that's right, not that important. what he did was nuts, for sure, totally crazy and unbelievable, but moon landing?
I think he's correct in the sense that its one of the most incredible feats a human being has achieved. Being less important to the human race takes nothing away from the sheer accomplishment.
(@Jeremy Smith) He was very secretive about his preparation and the final date of the ascent, it was not broadcasted live. He wanted to avoid there being a huge crowd and swarms of the media coverage on the day of the climb. If there had been months of advertising and build up, the world may very well have tuned in to a live stream.
I like Jimmy Kimmel, but the comments here are spot on with the one. I need to wonder if he even saw the film. What Alex does, and did here, is just top tier unbelievable.
In all of these interviews you can just tell Alex is thinking in his head......"Goddamn, I would rather be climbing than talking to this guy." lol I love his oscars interview. He's like,,,I could care less about an oscar.
Kudos to Alex Honnold. When he completed his peerless climb, he said "So delighted!" Such perfection always delights... "Perfection in worldly things is a joy to the body of a man..." ~ Baha'i Faith
Alex did really well. Conveying climbing in seven minutes to an audience that doesn't know the first thing about it has got to be really tough, and I think Alex did a great job.
This is so frustrating to watch, whenever I find an Alex Honnold interview I love hearing how passionate he is about his profession and how knowledgeable and Jimmy just seemed to be waiting for every opportunity to get a cheap joke in. I know it’s an entertainment show but seriously dude, show a little respect.
"you will be missed" comment at the end was super uncalled for. In my opinion Jimmey Kimmel has never said one funny thing. A little more respect towards Alex would have been nice. Congrats Alex on such an amazing accomplishment!
I remember watching him on a climbing documentary a few years ago and thinking, this guy is on a whole nother level! It's interesting to know how choreographed his climbs are, I always thought it was a bit play it by ear climbing. But he seems like such a clever guy, which makes more sense. Climbing is like walking to him. There is always risk, but for him it doesn't actually seem that risky.. Truly extraordinary, stay safe Alex.
Hilarious how Alex makes it seem like almost anyone could this with the right mind and training. I don’t think the audience fully comprehends the absolute insanity of what he did.
They definitely do not, they seem to be more interested in laughing at Kimmels ridiculous attempt at gags more...
How could they? Most of the audiences most impressive life achievement would be sucking Pringle’s of their shirts on the sofa without needing a vacuum

Elmo Blatch the moon landing and mathematical concepts have societal and scientific benefits. What exactly does climbing a big rock do for society at large ? Sure it’s an achievement and should be praised for what it is. Respected or treated with respect ? Seems a little over the top
The Undisputed Greatest Athletic Feat of All Time. Alex Honnold is a Living Legend
A message to the un-initiated who may stumble upon this video:
Free soloing El Cap is perhaps the single most incredible feat of skill, strength, mental toughness and endurance ever accomplished by a human being... in the history of human beings.
Well said...but don't try telling the haters that. Their idea of bravery is challenging an old woman over a parking spot at McDonalds....
and, as a former semi-pro athlete, i honestly think you STILL understated what he actually did
The only way off the wall is up.
Honnold himself said there is no difference between 50 feet and 3000 feet as you will die on either.
I really like Alex Honnold. In every interview I've seen, he's seems relaxed but obviously driven. I enjoy watching him be successful in his pursuits.
@@q1pit1If the jokes were funny and you would still feel like he is interested in the person it would be ok.
_Poser._
Painful to watch. A humble genius being interviewed by a TV clown

I don't think Kimmel knows what to do when he's in the presence of genuine greatness.

@@MazianConrad Steck was insaneeee - read all about him about visiting Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland

Alex Honnold is one of the most nicest, down to earth, not a show off, super athlete. He knows what he is doing and he works really hard to make it happen. Last Jimmy´s comment is so rude and a bad choice for a comedian. Would he talk about concussions to NFL players and making that last comment? To car racers? To bull fighters?
It's not rude, it's part of it. Honnold knows the risks involved perfectly well, and everyone knows he's not afraid of dying.
I think it was pretty obvious
ag it wasn't that bad
*Alex Honnold is a **-Scumbag-** Dirtbag that lives out of his Van and he doesn't shower*
I’m glad everyone thought this interview was trash too. Kimmel sounded so condescending I felt bad for Alex because he was trying to explain things to a person clearly more interested in himself and appearing funny. I definitely liked his other interviews and Ted talk better and he explained the same things unrestricted
Aw, I love this guy. He's always so humble and what he does is mind boggling. Can't wait to see the documentary soon.
"You will be missed." What the hell?! Seriously. What a terrible "joke" to say. Huge respect to Alex. It's insane the amount of preparation that is behind this kind of climbs.
that was the best joke of the whole clip. very old school.
Alex has probably heard it all before, and Jimmy probably knew it. Lots of people laugh at things that are inappropriate in the _wrong_ context; it seemed harmless.
if you can't take a joke, then the joke is on you. It was humorous
Oh no! A comedian telling a joke! Call the authorities!!!
That joke was for Honnald. He's 100% had the same macabre thoughts himself. If he took jokes that seriously he wouldn't free solo.
So amazing. He deserves more credit for that astonishing feat.
Jimmy Kimmel annoyed the hell out of me while interviewing Alex...He clearly knew nothing about climbing, and clearly didn't bother to know anything about it prior to the show.

Wow, what an awful interviewer :(
At that level, you'd expect he could interview someone like this.
Big difference is, when an actor gives a bad performance they don't die.
alex turned those generic questions into something so much more real and heartfelt and exciting
Under 5.10? Do you want him to die of boredom? He's stated elsewhere he'll be redirect his focus to harder sport climbs.
Jimmy is out of his league here. He's guilty of not doing his homework on Alex's feat. Too bad.
In all of these interviews you can just tell Alex is thinking in his head......"Goddamn, I would rather be climbing than talking to this guy." lol I love his oscars interview. He's like,,,I could care less about an oscar.
"You will be missed" seems to be a very inappropriate thing for Jimmy to joke about, given the probability of Alex actually dying.
