We've played I saw the sign, GeoDetective and Capital Cities and we've enjoyed many a grippingly juicy detective round. Does this relatively new map compete with those classics? or will it leave me feeling like a frustrated Colombo..
PLAY ALONG: Play your round, put your marker down, then switch tabs back to UA-cam to watch my attempt and the result. This way you don't ruin the game or the video!
Play this map: www.geoguessr.com/challenge/r...
As always let me know how you got on today. Any perfect scores?
Next videos will be the (less choppy) road to 10,000 part 2, followed by the epic trailer for How not to travel America...
I got an astonishing 0 points 😎
Got a perfect score the 1st round knew the place haha
God bless
I only got three 5,000 pointers.
Your spirit name shall be "Compass". Superpower: Duh, find out where the F U R. ❤

Always makes me laugh when tom puts music from the country he's searching when doing a time lapse
Correction on Kazakhstan, it’s capital city hasn’t changed, the name of the city has. Astana has also been known as Akmolinsk, Tselinograd, Akmola, and Nur-Sultan. I believe this is the second time that it has been named Astana.
That's all true, but it also changed somewhat recently, it was Almaty until like 15-20 years ago
secondary correction: the capital has changed one time, in 1997 it was moved from Almaty to (what's now called) Astana.
you're probably right that he was thinking about the name changes though, cause he said it changed multiple times.
@@jotha885 it changed back to Astana last month actually
I felt so happy when I thought I knew something he didn’t with Nursultan as the capital, but NO!
Why the city changed names so often? Aside from the post-Soviet changes?
6:43 Genuinely looks like he's stumbled into a Sim City game. All those different and unique buildings full of colors and the way zoning is mixed and how such a dense city just stops into barren country, which looks awesome btw.
I thought it really looked like the buildings in cities skylines!
@@TeamGamingSWE Oh your totally right!. It's so Cities Skylines.
With these ex soviet capitals it's often like this; they are totally planned out cities that also served to show the regimes wealth and power
The capitals look breathtaking
It got me immediately thinking about the old Red Alert games where you had to put the troops into those bigger buildings for better defence. With all due respect, it does really look like a game layout.
lmao yes and especially 8:05 felt like SimCity buildings
Honestly the geodetective series was my favourite where you were trying to pinpoint the location of your fans
I’m really keen to make many more of these. They’re so fun, just take a while to film and edit. I’m gonna try and get one out next week. Thanks for the feedback 😊
@@GeoWizard they are the best!!!
@@GeoWizard Is the submission still open? I'm not from Europe / North America like most of your Geodetective series submissions so far. And I've been to a few locations which might throw even some seasoned geoguessers off. They can be precisely located but a bit of local knowlegde may be required.
@@GeoWizard geo, I think pretty much every genre you put out has a genuine audience, so I just hope you continue to feel freedom to explore all the corners of output you've done so far as freely and flexibly as you have so far. We're here for it!
@@prundonmcavoy7155 this is an excellent point 👌🏻
I like when he speeds it up and plays local music for like 4 seconds
This was always a really brilliant touch in my mind, for the brief amount of time (~1 yr.) I've watched his videos.
And the kazakstan song too, loved it
Yeah I always like that too.
Anyone know what the kazhakstan one is?
@@C.Abbenfield i tried to Shazam it, but no luck. I left a comment, hopefully Tom would reply
@@ariseyhun2085 yeah me too, didnt work. I found it by searching for kazhakstan folk song on youtube 😄 probarbly what Tom did aswell..

*These videos are the ones people fell in love with your channel mate. Don't change it.*
yes!!!
A bold statement. :|
100%
These are great, but really a lot of people came from the straight line videos
Literally bro like fr
“That is some bloke from Taiwan” excellent detective skills there Tom 😂
For anyone curious, the bloke's name is right there on the building. That's Sun Yat-sen, the first leader of the Kuomintang, the nationalist party that fought the communist party in the Chinese Civil War under his much more infamous and brutal successor, Chiang Kai-shek. The KMT was defeated on the mainland in 1949 and were exiled to Taiwan, where the modern day "Republic of China" was established. The KMT still exists to this day and is a major political party in Taiwan.
He was also not from Taiwan. He was born in Xiangshan county, which is on the southern coast of mainland China, and died in Beijing before the outbreak of the civil war. But he is considered a national "father figure" in Taiwan. Hence why they got a building dedicated to him with his portrait up top Mao style. There is also a Kuomintang sun symbol (which is also on the Taiwanese flag) visible on the top left of the facade.
@@TheZauer I love intelligent people. Thanks for teaching me something new today. I will now spread this info to the world in the name of communism
@@TheZauer He's revered in Mainland China too. His mausoleum in Nanjing still features a big KMT flag on the ceiling (although I heard it was removed for a time before being restored).
@@TheZauer For anyone reading this that doesn't know; the KMT was a ruthless fascist party that ruled China with an iron fist.
I feel like a lot of people largely because of Rainbolt (I love him and watch his weekly tournaments so not saying it’s bad) have put more focus on metas, speed, and country/region guessing but I fell in love with this game for detective games like this and really taking the time to try and place yourself as exact as you can.
I remember when I first started watching Tom, I thought he was the best player in, potentially, the entire world. That's obviously not true anymore, but he's still really, really good, and by FAR the most entertaining GeoGuessr creator out there. Honestly the only GeoGuessr content creator I truly watch.
Agreed. I really like working off "vibes" and experience to make these guesses. Fits the adventuring spirit more
Tom is SOVL, others are soulless
"The compass is never wrong" says the map maker and then queue round 3 with the compass inverted lmao
I was looking for the sun and was like "no shot this is southern hemisphere". Only round I didn't get the 5k because on top of that I managed to miss both the cyrillic and the flag :D
@@tomhoffs8209 same lol i ended up putting mine in rwanda 😂
*cue
@@doublel2364 I'm sorry but you're not going to find buildings like that anywhere in Africa.
@@maxkho00 Johannesburg: Am I joke to you?
That round 3 in astana with the wrong compass took several years off my life
God it was so annoying. Worked out it was wrong pretty quick tho when the sun was in the north lmao!
@@TheBest14184 Took me 10 seconds to figure out. The sun is always the first thing I look at and language. Found both with ease and concluded the compass was wrong.
@@dyseskytten1 I saw the flag, remembered borats speech about potassium and went and checked the 3 big citys for a river :D
Yes a play along, these are still my favorite videos
On the second round, when you turn away from the turning torso building there's a yellow and red road sign on which you can very faintly read "Malmo." I wouldn't have gotten it if it wasn't for that!
same for me haha, first I was looking in Stockholm but then I saw that road sign
i was in exactly the same boat
What about the series where you work out where your fans are based on their photos? That was my favourite 👍
That was a great series
Yeah, mine too, it was awesome detective work.
I’m gonna try my best to record and upload one next week
@@GeoWizard yesss!!! I love these
@@GeoWizard Get in!!!
When Tom gets dropped in my city (SF) and he zooms over my house, it's like a celebrity calling you out by name :')
omg i feel exactly the same with turning torso one! that pic was old but otherwise he would almost be seeing me in a window HAHA
Spent way too much time trusting the Compass on Round 3 before I realized the sun was the wrong way.
Because of this video, I learned of the Manx language spoken on the Isle of Man. Always an educational (and entertaining) time with Tom.
There's also a domestic cat breed called the Manx cat from there, I didn't know it was a language too tbh.
It's a Celtic language, closely related to both Irish and Scots Gaelic, with the odd bit of Norse thrown in here and there.
@@Tish418 i dont get what youre saying. the cats there speak ? lol waht
The new thumbnails are clean man. I’ll never get tired of your classic geoguessr content
You're right. The thumbnail quality is updated for sure
This video was real good fun for me, because Tom spent time on talking about the images, the countries and cities and his thought processes much more than usual.
Detective map: so let's have one with American flags, a Taiwan flag, and the name of the city, just in case.
Tbf it also had Sacramento to throw a bit of confusion in there
Hello from Almaty 🇰🇿 Glad you've got Astana, it is indeed a very beautiful and unique city. I've recognized it immediately) Also, the capital hasn't changed since 1997 when it was moved from Almaty to Akmola. But the capital has changed its name several times: From Akmola to Astana in 1998, then to Nur-Sultan in 2019 and then back to Astana last month.
But do you guys have any good potassium there?
The motorcycle sign on the Isle of Man round was a big clue for me.
Came here to say this
For me it was Castletown.
For a while I felt like every other day there was an Isle of Man round in the daily challenge, so Castletown is just an immediate giveaway at this point
It gave me a raging clue.
@@dampsquid2494 I think my clue is pointing over here now
Hey Tom, i just recently discovered your "Straight line" series and have been absolutely loving it, can't wait for your next series.
make sure to watch "How not to travel Europe" before "How not to travel USA" in the coming month. It's also really cool. If you need an extra dose of Tom, join Patreon and watch his XXL-Recap of his Bicycle-Trip London-Budapest which he teased during the Belguim round
This is unrelated to GeoWizard and your comment, but your name and Zappa caught my eye so I checked out your page. I'm stoked to tuck into some of those moe. shows! I've been a big fan of theirs since the mid-90s. I haven't seen them tons of times, but at least a half-dozen, I'd say.
Serbia, eh? There are quite a few folks from near there where I live. (Salt Lake City)
11:35 I figured the compass was wrong immediately when the sun was to the north
I had Astana directly because of the giant tent. It's the biggest tent in the world
Second biggest. I got the biggest right here
Khan Shatyr. It's a mall, has an aquapark at the top floor
Dude, you just missed roasting the socks + flip flops combo guy at 26:46
As a promotional tie-in for your upcoming tour of America video, please consider doing a round of Geoguessr in America, perhaps the state streaks map. Would be fun to see how well you recognize each state. As an American I think that would be really entertaining! ✌🏼
Agreed!
I feel bad that Tom puts out this awesome video but so many people keep asking about the fan hunt videos. Thank you for this video, Tom. I love the detective work you do on these maps. This was a lot of fun and I learned quite a bit.
never stop making these videos man, love the interactive challenges
I used to commute through SF Chinatown on my way from Embarcadero Bart Station to my work near Stockton and Green in North Beach. Gave me a lot of nostalgia remembering that daily commute from 13 years ago.
Got the first one spot on because Oostende is my home town. Never thought I'd see the day!
By the way, the "Oo" is pronounced like the letter O in English, like in 'over' or 'home'
23:22 "St. Marks is straight up there" Literally looking at a sign pointing to where St. Marks is and you get it totally wrong lol. Don't worry, I still love you.
Turkmenistan tip: Ashgabat is largely made of gold - there are many statues, fountains and buildings of Soviet architecture (constructivism, empire style), parks, and at the same time there are few people. People live in poor houses, similar to communal apartments, dormitories of the times of the Soviet Union. All because of the dictatorship. By the way, if you need advice on how to set a point relatively accurately in Russia, I can give a couple of tips (one message cannot fit everything). Like your videos very much!
Love your videos mate. Keep up the good work! Greetings from Belgium.
The monent when Tom commented the blonde guy's haircut reminded me how much I enjoyed the Twitch streams and especially Street View Bingo. It is even a bit nostalgic. This was really one of my favourite things to do during the quarantine. Thank you, Tom!
I love how almost Every car is a Volkswagen, doesnt matter if it's a Opel or BMW, all Volkswagen 😆 Enjoying the video as always 👌
My favorite combo is a mix between the fast paced challenges and the detective maps this way I can cheer for you and also learn more about geography as a map fan
You can tell that the third one was a soviet country by the giant building next to it. Stalin commissioned 7 giant buildings in Moscow called the seven sisters and they all look like that. Following this, other Eastern Bloc cities then ended up with similar buildings. Warsaw has one, for example.
well yes, but actually no in case of Астана, because this building was built in around 2006 and only mimics сталинские высотки
That's what I figured. Looks very Soviet inspired, reminded me about the one in Warszawa because I've been there and seen it in person.
love how much you’ve been posting lately!!🙌🏼🥳
Loved the vid, these play along geogussr vids are the best, just mixing up the maps you've already done, and then some new ones too, love it
Took a break from studying to watch this, ty for the relaxing and amazing game Tom!
Study hard mate!
I love the themed time lapse footage, always makes me laugh
Love your GeoGuesser content...I would also love to see more interesting photospheres and tracking down your patreons pictures. I swear if you gave me 4 hours of content a day I'd watch it all. There is something very theraputic and relaxing in listening to you narrate your thought processes. Cheers from across the pond!
Knew the map was wrong when I saw the Kazakh flag and the sun in the north
When someone gets to 1.15m subs and doesn't have insta you know the content is top top tier. Doing it right. Good lick with taking the channel further
Great video as usual! Would really like to see more of this map!
Glad you're doing more Geoguesser, keep them coming Tom!
The third city looks like something you would build on Sim City!
always love your detective and perfect map exploration video, it's educational and i feel like traveling with you and everyone.
maybe twice a month for this content it would be great.
my take on compass, if you are at certain height, the compass will be inverted. idk tho
That Astana round was so frustrating, as I relied on the compass being correct and couldn't match the streets to anything so I just clicked somewhere, ended up being 10 points off of a perfect score because of that
Other than that, a really cool map and a great video as always Tom
the detective maps look really fun
would love to see more of them
Love your videos Tom, keep them up
I pretty much only play geoguessr to do your play alongs these days. Thanks for making them!
I finally got a perfect score. This was easier than I expected. Hopefully you do more of these :D
These are my favorite videos. This is how I discovered your channel
I live on the Isle of Man and love your content, it makes me happy beyond relief that you finally got a round based here! Great job on the guesses! I did indeed know exactly where you were straight from the getgo.
Im curious, what were clues that someone not from the UK couldve picked up on? Or was the challenge just having to search for extraordinarily long?
@@cornercarton road markings identify it as the UK, the motorcycle sign thing is what tips you off to the Isle of Man. Then use town names to find the right junction as in the video.
my fave type of video, amazing detective work Mr. Magic Man
18:35 Acktually 🤓, that's a Renault Megane Coupe, I think a pre facelift with rear lexus lights too.
you literally bring happiness into my sad life. lots of love for you Tom 🖤
Here's something to cheer you up. ;)

❤
I can bring you happiness too baby
jk
Pretty happy with myself. I'm absolute shit at geoguesser, but I grew up near San Francisco and guessed that it was San Fran china town in about half a second. I've not been there often, but it's nice to know that I'm pretty familiar with where I grew up.
Loving these frequent geoguessr videos!
17:25 memorial hall right on top of the cursor
"Can't see the memorial hall"
Oh, never change Tom
Tom we love your content please never stop
Loving all the Geoguesser content of the last couple of weeks.
Great to see you do more and more Geoguessr stuff again.
Haha, in Kazalhstan it's not the capital they've changed a few times, but the name of the capital ;)
Another great video Tom, really enjoyed that map. I recognised Astana straight away because I've seen the tent building thing in Spaghetti Road's Kazakhstan video and presumably the Isle of Man location is there because it is a famous part or the Isle of Man TT, you can see on the map that the stretch of road where it was is labelled as 'Ballamoda strait'.
Old school wholesome GeoWizard content. Very comfy.
I just completed my first play along! I usually can't wait and I just end up watching you before I get a chance to play. I gotta say, I did way better than I expected LOL I am looking forward to watching you play and learning more tips :)
Post watch update: the ones I got right you found easy. And the one I completely missed, you found hard. I will take that as a win
Lol
I love your perfect score videos, I feel like slowly working out the location is fun to watch as people can guess at the same time as you. I think most meta players focus on getting super fast guesses so it gives us some different content to watch
I love how you embrace the difficulties - like we all should, in GG, but in general as well!
That Astana guess was SICK. Nicely done, Tom.
Love these dude. Thanks
In Astana the giveaway with the compass is Sun in the north.
This was great! I've been really enjoying rainbolt's stuff recently but it's no substitution for this style of play that pinpoints where you based on knowledge gained through a genuine interest in the world as opposed to an interest in the meta (these aren't necessarily mutually exclusive, just to be clear!). It's one thing to know you're in Luxembourg because the car is lower down, you're in New Zealand because of its distinctive bollards or you're in Sweden because the small white dashes on the edges of the road, but it's another thing entirely to know you're in Belgium because you cycled through that very town or in Malmo because you recognise a specific interesting building you have some criticisms of. It's good that both styles exist and are appreciated by the community
My attempt was woeful as usual but I knew that I'd heard of Castletown and couldn't remember where. First I thought of Castleton in the Peak District and then only twigged when you mentioned the Isle of Man. Great video!
Got 25k! The second one was the most difficult for me, it's good that I found a hint at the very end. The rest were simple, with very clear clues. Well, maybe except for the last one.
These videos are always the best.
I'd love a return of the Geo Detective series. Those were always loads of fun to watch!
6:55 “what are they” was so funny to me 😂 idk why
Absolutely love this videos, you make my day suuuuuiii
amazing as always
When the lakes were to the west, and river to the east, and the photosphere showed the exact opposite, I figured it wasn’t a coincidence. Unfortunate Tom spent so much time looking.
When I saw Cyrillic, and the sun in the north, I figured the compass was trash. Which is frustrating on a "perfect" map that specifically calls out the compass as being accurate
Funnily enough, when Tom said that he was going to consider the possibility of the compass being wrong, I thought to myself "Oh, Tom... did you forget that the author said the compass would always be right?".
Tom: hovers his mouse cursor over Memorial Hall
also Tom: Can't see the Memorial hall.
immortal classic.
First play along Ive done! Got all but Kazakhstan - so mad because I hovered over the city too but didnt recognize it
That tunnel in San Francisco has a building with an interesting story at the south entrance. Before there was a tunnel, Stockton Street just went over the hill. To build the tunnel entrance they had to lower the street for the block between Bush and Sutter. There were already buildings standing there and they were left with their old front doors opening into thin air and their basements suddenly at street level.
You can still see one of these today, west side of the street, building that today houses the Palihotel. Obvious old front door (now a window) on the left side of the facade one story up from the street.
your geo guessr videos i find very relaxing and soothing and help cope with my anxiety so thank you
hey Tom, great video as always and good job on the 25k! :D usually i'm not good / too impatient on those detective rounds but i got 25k on that one. the rounds were quite doable. btw (though i'm fairly sure you probably are aware and got the same comment already) the compass is always correct when it says Google at the bottom right but if the footage is taken by someone else it can be all over the place and in my experience you shouldn't rely on it. even if the map says "compass always correct" or smtg like that
love the videos tom keep it goinnn
4 out of 5 were doable (you need pretty good eyes to pick up Malmö as it is written on a sign rather small and it is rather blurry). However, for the Isle of Man location I simply wasn't bothered to look around for on the map, haha. Pretty good Map nonetheless !
Love these vids
The wrong compass on round 3 really confused me a for a few minutes, despite knowing that it must be Astana.
18,068 points for me! It's one of my best scores. Your videos have helped me more than I realised. :)
Kazakhstan dropped my score significantly. I saw the blue and yellow flag and reddish buildings so I guessed Sweden.
7:50 they do look very icelandic!
I had pretty much the exact same experience with the Kazakhstan and Isle of Man rounds. I missed Malmo and ended up with 23,528 points. Great video, Tom.
Good job, liked this map!
7:45 - You´d better take that back!! NOBODY in Norway has a blue roof!!! No green either! Red or black are the only options here. Those wide roads also point towards eastern Europe or some kind of -stan-country. You finally got around to it, but never ever suggest that Norwegians have blue roofs! ;) Nice job getting it all together in the end though - I guess this is why we worship you!!!
those buildings in astana looked insane damn. also, this was a fun map! i wouldnt be opposed to seeing more from it
Loved this map. Do more!
My favorite part of old geoguessr videos was Tom picking out people on the map and going off track for a bit...
Let's be honest, we all want to see you doing more duels! Love whatever you do!
