Playing the world map until I beat my 2016 perfect score speed run

  • It was the video that really got the ball rolling on the "GeoguessrWizard" channel as it was then known. At the time it was a massive achievement and something that I toiled over for weeks, racking up hundreds of attempts in the process. 7 years later and with so much more experience under my belt, how many attempts will it take me to better the impressive time of 30:05 for a perfect score on the gruelling world map? Is the world map even gruelling any more? All will be revealed in this relaxed, nostalgic video.
PS: How not to travel America news: Episode 6 will be released next Sunday (12th Feb) at 8pm GMT (a day earlier for patreons)
I am currently filming a mission (one that was fairly out of the blue - all will be explained soon)

I don't know if there's something wrong with me but I lose track of where I am on the map SO FAST... and there's no way I would be able to find a place on the map, teleport back to start, and be somehow able to figure out that location on the map as quickly as Tom does. It would take me like 10 minutes of going back and forth and trying to remember where I went and which road is which.

    Some fun Italy tidbits:
    "Puzzola" means "someone/thing that farts/stinks"!
At the regional park sign, if you looked in the top left it says Emilia-Romagna, although it is blurry. That is one of the 20 regions of Italy, and could have immediately limited your search to a much smaller area, although you found it fast enough anyway!
What slightly confused me was the clover on the top right, as that is Lombardia's symbol, although I'm guessing this one is slightly different and is specific to some small town I've never heard of.

Just adding to this from the dictionary definition: The adjective oriental, which carries strong associations with colonialism and with language that others and exoticizes, is usually considered offensive when used by non-Asian people to describe people of various Asian identities. Its use to describe elements of Asian culture sometimes has a dated feel, but is not usually regarded as offensive.
I think adapting your language to be more inclusive and less offensive can feel a bit hostile coming from the demands in comments of a YT video, but I hope Tom can realize that it's not just appeasing the social justice warriors. It's also just a great way to help people feel comfortable and safe. And I do hope that Tom can make further strides to do that for the audience. I gotta say, pointing out a sign and saying "see it's not racist" is a bit of a knee jerk reaction to the people trying to get a rise out of him. He's responding to them and not the people that it will actually impact!

Always interesting when you recognize something like a gas station you've frequented and know exactly where you are; got that Ossining one immediately. If you ever get back to NY for a How Not to Travel, definitely recommend venturing up or down the Hudson Valley. You can use every method of transport you can think of: bike, car, bus, train, boat, ferry, kayak, jetski, plane, or hike. Lots to do and see along the way!

On the very first cross road, even before you checked your compass, there's a 'paddestoel' (Dutch for mushroom) on your left, which shows you the direction and (biking) distance to the nearest towns and cities. There's a lot of those in The Netherlands, especially around biking paths and in rural areas. No road numbers, though. I don't know if the resolution of Google Maps is good enough to read what they say, but if it is, they might help you in other Netherlands rounds.

hey Tom, at 19:38, you could've already known it was Canada based on the speed sign, as Canada uses "Maximum" while the US uses "Speed limit". additionally, at 22:32, the bollards on the right are specific to Alberta. in hindsight, this is useless information but helpful for the future :)

I've got one request tho, I don't know how others feel about this, but I find that the big Timer on the screen is a bit irritating and I don't wanna say "annoying".. but you know what I mean. If you could just size that one a bit down I think it would just be more pleasing to the Eye. Keep up the great work! I love playing along with you. Greetings from Austria!
