My favourite sequencer is on the JD-Xi, sure its massively limited, but it is so immediate and simple. I've never written so many bits of music so quickly. Obviously it is more for sketching out ideas, but its honestly brought back the fun into music creation and removes so many of the distractions that made software sequencing with hardware gear such a pain just to set up before you can even think about actually writing anything.
I gotta call shenanigans on only showing an MPC2000 as an example of "early MIDI sequencers". Especially since it's from 1997. Machines like the Alesis MMT8, Yamaha QX-series, Linn 9000, Roland MSQ-series & MC-series or even the MPC60 should have at least been mentioned since they came earlier (some by a whole decade).
I dont have an XL. 2000 Classic has all the features of an XL. MPC 2000 Classic is a superior MIDI sequencer to every "machine" that you mentioned. Including MPC 60. MPC 60 cant handle 1/2 the midi notes that a 2000 Classic can
Whenever I hear justin delay for reverb I still smile, if I were the boss I would have hired him on his name alone from the resume over looking every other candidate no matter how qualified they are... this is why I'm not the business guy
Some sequencers allow you to transpose the sequence in exactly the way you specified- by changing the starting note of the sequence based on the key you play on the keyboard. Definitely read the specs/manual if that is a feature you are looking for.
@@justindelay Thx for responding. I have a Keystep (and a DAW). I though all hardwars sequencers had this feature. It seemed an important one to me for beginners.

@@fritsvanzanten3573 Unfortunately no. Korg synths have a great analog sound, but their sequencers are very basic, except for the motion sequence maybe. I use Arturia sequencers (keystep and beatstep pro) to control Korg synths (not only volcas, but also Minilogue). I wish Korg learn from Arturia, because 16 step sequencers is a very limited option at these days.
This video wasn't sponsored, we were just looking to showcase the new Squid through the lens of Sequencers from past years to show how they've evolved, thanks for watching!
Squarp Pyramid seems good! OXI one seems like another good one, 4 sequences in one, each sequencer having 8 tracks, so 32 tracks. Forget the squid, no song mode!
Korg does a not know how to count past 16... all of their sequencers are 16 steps or less... in 2019!!! 🙄 A Keystep is great, but two synced Keysteps are even better for sequencing. 😎
Novation circuits/monostation are good cheaper sequencers too...the monostation does alot of the tricks the squid does (I wanted squid but realised you wouldnt really use its tricks for chords?)
@@kidssnyder9680 Nope, I am still using Circuits, plus the MC-101, and the Korg SQ-64 for the modular. I am ok with having multiple sequencers, although the SL is still cool.
@@byniasofficial2567 Yeah, kind of blatant on second viewing. I guess the squid is alright. It would be nice if they had included traditional piano roll sequences of arbitrary length in there somewhere, but I guess a hard limit of 64 steps is good enough for techno or something.

Thank you for this video. What about the little Korg SQ1 ? What about using built in sequencer from Behringer DeepMind or Novation Bass Station to sequence other external hardware synths ? And can you synch them with a drum machine like Alesis SR18 ?
I have a Korg Prologue and would like to get a really simple step sequencer that you can programme the steps by pressing the keys on the Prologue - just like how they did on the monologue. Can anyone reccomend a simple one? I tried the Korg SQ1 but you can't programme the steps by pressing the keys. Thank you.
Would like to hear your thoughts about the mpc one. So far im not totaly convinced by most sequencers. I'm not a DJ...i only want to hook up a prophet rev2 and a yamaha mox8...
So with a sequencer like the squid...is there a lot you can do on this that you can do elsewhere? Im new and just curious where the distinction or similarities of these different instruments exists. Seems like this does so much that it would take the place of many other pieces
Great you're hyped about the Squid I guess? but you named only the MPC from the 90's claimed it was one of the first commercially available sequencers, which it wasn't, and then never mentioned the modern MPCs... Yamaha, Oberheim, Sequential, all had sequencers before the AKAI...
Is there any hardware synth that can handle 8 separate 32 step sequences and stitch them together? For reference I mean the Final Fantasy Prelude. I’m looking for a sequencer that can allow me to punch in all those notes , stitch them together and play in the correct order, so I can then play the pads over them. Would absolutely appreciate any insight on this!
Roland MC 50 does triplets. I used in on my track. Looks like it has micro step edits too, but I have never used this feature. Check out their online manual. You can buy used on ebay or Reverb.
The note you hear is the voice. Yet it may be simple (one oscillator) or complex (multiple oscillators, filter, envelope, VCA, LFO) in how it is made. Hence our complex voice will be richer in harmonics and more varied in timbre. But at this point it is still monophonic. If we want polyphony (a note under each finger simultaneously) then we need to provide a voice per finger (read more $$ or Prophet12). Then there is paraphony where there are multiple voices but they share the same filter etc. See the Arturia Microfreak. Then there is multi-timbrality - see the Sequential SixTrak. Two articles here may help - en.audiofanzine.com/sound-synthesis/editorial/articles/a-mono-poly-game.html Whatever you do don't discuss this terminology online or at synth meetings as it can turn violent :-)
The squid has no song mode .. so it's pretty useless as a studio piece. Pioneer needs to clean up the toraiz projects. I was very disapointed with it's lack of "sequencer". It's pretty but expensive, and more of a toy than a serious center of a rig.
What happened? Reverb sucks now. I actually thought the Etsy merger made sense, but it seems like nobody uses anymore. Guess I have to return to eBay...

I love how DeLay is introducing reverbs
I missed one element. Once your sequence is recorded you can start it from different keys, so it varies in pitch, you can play it higher and lower.

Pioneer ? You should have used a squarp pyramid that is the future
Depends on work flow...squarp is less live...it takes a few more screens to do what squid does...however under the hood it squarp is very powerful
The only issue I had with the Squarp was that it soon ran out of internal memory and didn’t deal with importing multi track midi files well
Two words: Synthstrom Deluge
Expensive, Screen too small, not often available used, not very intuitive, only available new from Synthstrom New Zealand!
sure you can 'overdub' with midi but only if you're using a poly, lol
